Wowza. When this came out in theaters I was nowhere near ready. I hadn't read the book and a friend of mine swore it was great so I actually bought a ticket to go see this but I was late getting ready so by the time I got to the theater it was practically over. Plus it was in 3D and I forgot glasses so once again I failed at properly getting ready. When it came out on 4k though I was more than ready. Well, close I should say. I hadn't saved up enough pickles to buy it when it came out so I had to slang a few more dills before I could pick it up but when a sale came along I knew I'd be ready. That sale came and I was finally ready to pick it up, which I did but then I realized I didn't have a 4k player so I was back to square one. I've looked at the box art and read the description so many times it's like I've seen it so I feel qualified to give this movie an honest review I just hope you're ready because I'm about to start. It's good.

Fanservice: The Movie

Ready Player One is perhaps one of the greatest popcorn movies of all time. There's very little to write home about in terms of its artistic accomplishments; this is not some grand magnum opus that will stand the test of time. It's cliche, unbalanced, and you've seen everything it does in countless movies before. What makes it stand out is the level of devotion to fanservice that no other movie, save perhaps Marvel's recent Avenger tent pole productions, offers. It's not enough to make it a classic, but there are few movies where you can watch the 1966 Batman drive near King Kong or The Iron Giant fighting in the same battle as Mecha Godzilla. There is plenty of joy to be had in the fanservice alone and it is the movies greatest strength.
4K should be the best format to view the movie in, however it does not offer the improvement levels that I noticed in Deadpool 2's 4K disc. A lot of the movie seemed somewhat soft to me, perhaps a budget and time issue introduced by the massive amounts of CGI required to create this movie. Colors are good and detail level hits well, but not much more than the 1080p presentation also included in the package. It may take a keener eye than mine to appreciate the benefits of the 4K disc, but whether it is a standard Blu-Ray or 4K Blu-Ray, you'll only ever notice all of the secrets by combing the dense high definition frames, which is the true joy in Ready Player One.

Awesome movie, Best Buy had it at a great price during Black Friday which is where I bought this.
If you haven't seen the movie but have read the book, my only wish is that you go into the movie with an open mind, and think of it as though it was INSPIRED by the book.... not as a book-to-film adaptation. With the right mindset and separating it from the book, this movie is fantastic in its own right. I am a big gamer and loved the gaming aspects of it. However, I am a book purist as well, so it was difficult for me to enjoy this movie until I started thinking of it as its own thing. The book itself is amazing, and the movie itself is amazing too! So this review is just a forewarning for other book purists out there, as it is NOTHING like the book besides the bare bones concept!

Seriously one of my favorite movies. Sure CGI was a little overdone, but I mean c'mon it's based on video games. As a gamer, catching all the "Easter eggs" is definitely fun and makes it worth rewatching a few times to catch new characters from your fav games in the back ground. This movie was done creatively and makes it enjoyable for people who have dabbled with a lot of games and old school movies. A lot of the negative stars come from some who just aren't aware of the characters and scenes. If you're a true gamer you'll definitely enjoy this movie and it's meaningnif you search between the lines. Definitely one of the tops in my cartidge deck.

I would have given this 4.5 stars if I could but I had to round up. I like the movie a lot and the 4K is really nice for the most part. My biggest issues are two fold. 1... The movie is dark. I wish it was a little brighter. I messed with my settings and found the hdr / Dolby vision to make the movie much darker than the Blu-Ray (no hdr) version. 2.... The 4K scenes in the Oasis are really nice due to the CGI and colors. However it has a noticable down-tick as it becomes grainy when it goes back into the real world. You get used to it but at first it's a little jarring. However overall it's a great purchase.

No, I'm not kidding. There is a ridiculous number of pop-culture references in this movie. You're going to want to pause and play "Where's Waldo" to see how many characters you can even see, much less identify, ESPECIALLY during the big group scenes.
Honestly, I don't know how they managed to work out all the legal rights to allow these different characters to appear together. It must've been like Lawyer Thunderdome or something in there...
I also was surprised by the message they put out, that sometimes you just need to Exit the Matrix and get out into the real world once in a while.

I really didn't give this movie a try at all when it came out. No theater, blu ray release, Redbox nothing. On a plane flight I was browsing movies and the guy next to me told me that this movies was really good, and I was like, Okay I'm stuck here for like 5 hours so lets try it. Man did this bring back memories and kept me watching with all the retro throw backs from "my time". To the point where I went out and bought he 4K version and have it on my mobile devices. And apparently, its good enough for the "new generation" as my 8 year old simply loves it as well and we watch it all the time.

I was very excited to see this film. I had been hoping to pick it up for a while, and then Best Buy had it on sale at a very reasonable price on 4K UHD Blu-ray, so I purchased it. The film took place in more of the game world (the Oasis) than I expected, which was somewhat of a disappointment. I felt it was difficult to connect to the characters since you're flung into that world very quickly. Plus, the concept isn't all that appealing to me on the surface. Still, it is quite a spectacle. There are so many pop culture icons in the film, so one will want to revisit the film just to see what was missed on previous viewings.
Also, this film is demo worthy for those with a Dolby Atmos system. The opening race sequence is what I used to demo my system, and it is truly amazing. So, if you have no other reason to watch or re-watch the film that may be the one reason to add it to your collection.

I read the book that the movie is based upon a few times before the movie came out and will say that the book is more engrossing than the movie but the movie is great too.
I also just finished reading "The History of the Future: Oculus, Facebook, and the Revolution That Swept Virtual Reality" which is another great read and re-watching this movie gave me a greater interest in VR. It's going to be interesting to see if the more mature VR players and the more recent (Valve) can make something equivalent of the "Oasis."

I read Ready Player One and really liked the book. All of the nods to 80's pop culture reminded me of my childhood. Now this movie makes quite a few substantial changes to the story but in the end is still entertaining. I would have liked to see a more faithful translation of the book but I can understand why they made some of the changes they did. Having characters recite every line of dialogue from a movie would have been tedious and not very exciting film making and I'm sure some of the other changes that were made had to do with licensing.
But the movie is ultimately worth watching. Since a great portion of the movie happens in The Oasis where all of the characters are computer generated the visuals on this disc are stunning. This movie is absolutely 4k home theater demo material. Spectacular picture and sound.

This movie is great, has amazing FUNNY lines, fast action, really sets a nice pace. The sound is great, can't say enough good things about the sound, it has what you expect for the money you spend on a disk of this magnitude, the money they spent was well placed. You get high quality content. The music is great, love the era and the like... The CGI is so realistic you forget its CGI and just fall into the story and lose yourself in the emotion and staging of the drama and action.

Great movie. If you're a gamer you've probably watched this already but if you haven't please do yourself the favor and watch it. It's full of stereotypes and cliché phrases but you honestly will enjoy the movie nonetheless.

This was pretty much a send out to all video game players out there. This movie has a cameo from almost every single video game character that has ever been seen including characters based on comic book and movie characters. The film also addresses things like people losing their lives to too much game play and we see a world where that’s exactly the case. The films fun and the blu Ray comes a bunch of special features and even a digital download which is fun.

So I did read the book a long time ago before the movie was even a thing. Maybe I had the benefit of time and not reading it right before the movie came out as I thought the movie was a good adaptation and a lot of fun. If you never read the book this would still be a lot fun for anyone who loves 80's pop culture. If youre a fan of movies, games, etc give this one a try as it pretty much references every other movie and game.

I had this on blu ray. But this is one of those amazing visual movies. It looks even better in 4K. Imagine a world where your only escape is online. A virtual reality that lets you be anything and anyone. Then put in a scavenger hunt that can change your world. That’s this movie. And it works. So many high notes. Iron Giant is in it!! Come on. It gives so many nods to great films. It’s a truly fun movie.

The pacing of the story is very fast , next thing I knew the movie was over not entirely sure why some characters in the trailer or cover art are on there, if they just make a small cameo I felt bamboozled. No big deal I really like it, and it does come with a digital copy, I had read some reviews that made me second think it but it did come with a digital copy if I’m not mistaken it also came with a dvd

Great story, good actors, absolute eye candy to watch! I was double dipping buying the 4K version of this film as I already owned the 3D bluray version (which is amazing) but for a $7.99 black friday purchase for the 4K UHD disc and UHD digital code it was a no brainer. It looked and sounding amazing with the 4K and Dolby Atmos soundtrack. Highly recommend it, especially if you are a retro 80's fan!

A great must see movie… Best watched in 4K I saw this movie in the theaters and while it is a very long movie did not feel like it to me. I knew I had to have this movie once it came out!!! Once it came out I had to have it in 4K so I can watch it as often as I feel like. It’s one of those movies where you find yourself talking at the screen because of what’s going on… This movie is a must see!!!

First and foremost, Ready Player One is one of my favorite books. I would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in the movie. As for Steven Spielberg’s big-screen adaptation, it certainly delivers. It proves to be a more-than-worthy adaptation without following the book word for word. And if you’re a fan of 80s nostalgia, you’ll love all of the Easter eggs and shoutouts in the film.
