Great 5.1 Sound When Paired With Rear Speakers

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was looking for a soundbar for a Christmas present for my mom. She is elderly and does enjoy watching movies. The sound from the Samsung TV was adequate; nothing to write home about. I purchased this 3.1 unit along with the rear speakers for a 5.1 unit. Connected the 3.1 unit and channel surfed for a few minutes. I was unimpressed to say the least. I then decided to play Hacksaw Ridge from Amazon. There was a difference. Then there came a point in the movie where they Navy was requested to 'soften' the ridge with their big guns. The sound of the big guns and the ensuing battle was dramatic. My mom, nor me, could not believe how much better it sounded. It was great. It took a scene such as this to show the difference. The next day I hooked up the rear speakers for the 5.1 system. It took awhile to get the rear speakers to work. The instructions are wrong. Got the system working in 5.1 and the sound is amazing. Center, left, right, front, and back with a subwoofer for the added rumble. It is better than going to a movie theater. The rear speakers only add accent. At times there is very little coming from them. I'm of the opinion that a center channel is not optional; its a must. The center channel will produce its share of voice and leave the right and left channels to produce the stereo effect.

We bought this soundbar and subwoofer on clearance from our local Best Buy. It was a killer deal so we were a little nervous we were going to have problems or it wouldn’t work well. We were so wrong! It is awesome. The sound is great, the woofer is deep and clear. We love it-it’s perfect for our living room. We gave it one less star because we can’t connect it to our remote, which is a little bit of a pain. Overall, though, we are extremely happy with it

Looking for more volume and bass

So I bought this to replace my hw-f450 that can't support rear speakers. I bought the 8500 series rear speakers with this and they sound awesome once you get them linked. The problem is that during a movie I have to have the volume max to enjoy it and even then I'm wanting more volume and more bass with the bass set at +6 it's not efficient. My old system outperforms this one in volume for sure. Clarity is better with this with the center speakers. My old sub is on par with the new one. If you have an older model Samsung soundbar I would not waste your money on this. I may try the jbl 3.1 with the detachable rear speakers that are true wireless. That has a total system output of 510w with 300w being the sub. This sub is 160w.

      Samuel,

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung HW-M550 and the SWA-8500S Wireless Rear Loud Speakers. I am sorry to hear that you did not experience the full potential of the surround sound system.

There are a few settings you can change to adjust the surround effect to your preference:

      1. Make sure that the source (e.g. TV output) is sending surround channels to the Soundbar. If the source is not surround, then set the Surround mode to OFF on the Soundbar by pressing the Surround button on the remote.
      2. If the source has surround channels, select the desired Sound Mode from the Soundbar remote. Choices are STANDARD, MUSIC, CLEAR VOICE, SPORTS, or MOVIE.
      3. Turn off Dynamic Range Control. This is done by pressing and holing the Sound Mode button while the Soundbar is in standby mode.
      4. Increase the volume level of the surround speakers using the Sound Control button on the Soundbar remote control.

I hope these tips help to make your audio experience better. For further assistance, please contact our Customer Support at 1-800-SAMSUNG and a representative will gladly help you.

Bought this to go with Samsung 55" (MU8000) and the sound is phenomenal. Synced right up when we powered it on. We are using the digital output cord to connect it with our TV, but the bluetooth feature works great with my Apple Music through my Iphone. Sound fills the house with sound set to 50, and it goes to 100! Great buy as we got this item on sale! If you're on the fence, go ahead and buy this!

Bought this sound bar at best buy this thanksgiving and also bought rear speaker set to make it 5.1 channel. So far I like the soundbar. Dialogues are clear, Bass is good (not too overpowering). Settings need to be changed. Bass is 0 by default. Set it to 6. Sub woofer is set to 0. Change it to 6. Turn off surround (I don't like it. It ruins 5.1 channel sound by sending left channel sound to surround left and vice versa.). I tested 5.1 using youtube 5.1 dolby digital test video and it worked fine. Sound came out of their respective speaker. So 5.1 works fine. Watched few clips from fast and furious movies. The sound was amazing coming from all directions. It was really cinematic experience. Volume depends on the input. When I play music using my phone (bluetooth connection), 20-30 fills up the room (16 X 20) and it can go till 100. Volume with TV (connected HDMI TV ARC) is good but not too high. I have to set volume to at least 50. Sometimes even 60-70. Volume when using you tube is good.

I originally bought it 10/26 and really liked it. Yesterday, 11/18, it already failed and luckily I was able to swap it out since it was less than 30 days old. I turned on my pc that its linked to and noticed the sound quality was alot worse than normal. Also, it only worked on the sound modes "sport" and "movie". Any of the others made a very, and I mean VERY odd muffled noise. Surround on and off were also the same way. On worked but it had poor quality, off made that VERY odd muffled noise. I really like it overally, its sleek and gets the job done and I would give it a 5/5 but that failure dropped it a star. It overall has great reviews so I think i just got unlucky. Also, I never turn it up very loud since im using it as my pc speakers so I sit right in front of it (so its not like i blew the speakers).

I bought this to pair with a Sony 900E television using the digital optical audio out from the tv. While the sound quality is acceptable, the volume is not. A loud conversation could easily drown out the speakers. While this might be a great sound bar when used with Samsung's televisions, I would think twice about pairing with other manufacture's televisions based on my experience. You might want to check out the ratings on Samsung's own website. I depended on Best Buy's ratings and this definitely did not live up to my expectations.

      VOLUME NOT LOUD ENOUGH – SOUND+ & M SERIES
Thank you for purchasing this Samsung HW-M550 Soundbar System.
I am sorry to hear that you were not completely satisfied with its low volume.

Please check the connection between the Soundbar and other source devices, and try the following tips that may help improve the volume level.
      1. If the Soundbar is connected to a TV thru HDMI, make sure to use the HDMI-ARC jack on the TV and select “External speakers” as the TV sound output.
      2. Check the audio output format sent to the Soundbar. Typical options are PCM, Dolby Digital, and Bitstream. Select the option that optimizes the sound from your source.
      3. Change the SOUND MODE on the Soundbar using the Soundbar’s remote. Choices are STANDARD, MUSIC, CLEAR VOICE, SPORTS, or MOVIE. Select the appropriate mode for the individual room acoustics.
      4. Turn on Dynamic Range Control. This is done by pressing and holding the SOUND MODE button on the remote control while the Soundbar is in standby mode.

We also recommend users update the software to the latest version, so that the unit would keep up with improvements and compatibility enhancements. The software updates can be performed via the Multiroom App on your mobile device, or via manual download from Samsung.com/support
Here is a link to download the latest software update:
      https://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/2017-curved-soundplus-soundbar-hw-ms6500

    Good sound, volume low

Overall after a few weeks with the units with the rear speakers, I find that the sound itself is a great quality. I have no issues with the sub as others have commented. The mix is a great mix, and it produces nice lows. The one issue I have is overall volume. I do understand it is only a $450 set up cost, but 340 watts rated should produce significantly higher volume in a 15x20 room. I have tried to change through each of the input options, and made sure that each of the source outputs were maxed out, and each of the settings on the system were maxed out. While it does get to a reasonable volume at max, it's not as high as anticipated, and I find that I typically need to max out the volume on the bar for some lower output sources like Uverse, and come close on higher output sources. Typically I would expect that, for a 340W system, there would be some headroom above where the listening volume is. I haven't quite found that yet. I haven't decided whether to return it yet, as I really do like the overall tonal mix, I will continue to tinker with it a bit more before deciding.

I bought this to replace an older Samsung sound bar which has poor bass and is not expandable for full surround with additional rear speakers. The sound from this sound bar is good, but as others mentioned, the bass is lacking. Even with the Bass maxed out at +6, it lacks any real thump for music or movies. Additionally, it seems as though our old soundbar was louder than this one. If you are looking for a basic upgrade from TV speakers, then I would recommend it. If you are looking for a theater type experience, save your money. I will be returning this for a refund and reinstalling my old soundbar.

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung Soundbar. I am sorry to hear that you were not happy with its sound quality.

A possible cause may be that the Soundbar is not placed with the SAMSUNG logo facing up towards the ceiling. If you position the soundbar with the logo facing up, you will see the display/status panel and the speakers will be facing outward. (Refer to product photos on BestBuy.com and zoom in on the photos) If you have incorrectly placed the soundbar with the display side down and the SAMSUNG logo perpendicular to the floor, you will experience muffled or low quality sound because the unit will be resting on the speakers.

I hope this helps to solve the sound issue. Should you need further assistance, please contact Samsung Customer Support toll-free at 1-800-SAMSUNG and a representative will gladly help you.

I purchased this system a month ago to go with my Samsung 65 Curved - 2160p 4K Ultra TV with HDR. The sound bar is great with clear sound but the subwoofer is awful. There is barely any bass even when set to +6. Even when I had it installed by Best Buy, I told them this wasn't working as expected because there were no real bass sound coming out especially while listening to music or watching a movie. I thought I had an out of box failure and was able to return the system last night. Once I connected the new Soundbar system, I realized that the subwoofer won't provide the desired sound and that the subwoofer is poor for a deep base sound. I also purchased 2 LG 2.1 Hi-Res Soundbar systems within the last month. I have to admit for a system that cost much less than the Samsung (HW-M550) system, the LG subwoofer is outstanding!

Disappointed to say the least. Purchased this soundbar on salesman recommendation to go with 65" Samsung curved TV i just purchased. Salesman showed me the soundbar display in store and it sounded so good (in store) that I was going to replace my older Bose home theater system with this Samsung Soundbar. Couple days later TV"s delivered i hook up soundbar & base and couldn't believe how WEAK this was compared to the one in the store base is almost non-existent. (And yes Samsung i had logo on the soundbar facing up) returned it to store checked display again to make sure it was the same one which it was & it sounded great. I would say don't always trust the displays in the store because it's not always like that when you get it home.

I bought this at the Hartsdale location last night. When the sales associate showed me what this sound bar and subwoofer could do I was impressed and bought it. Even bought the rear speakers too! Once I got home I was eager to connect everything. Having the same issue as others with the soundbar not connecting to subwoofer. I called SAMSUNG and the person on the other end would ask redundant question like - "is the device powered ON?", "is it plugged into the outlet?", "you must press firmly on the ID button". Eventually I ended up hanging up on her because her questions were getting me more frustrated. Tried searching on YouTube and nothing. Can anyone shed some light on what I'm doing wrong?

After unpacking and connecting to a Samsung TV I went to mount this Soundbar using the provided equipment. I could not find the wall count guide (template); Holder-Screws; or Screws. Samsung Support told me these three items are NOT included in the package and I need to call a third-party accessory company to purchase these minor, but required, parts. They would also not give me the specification sizes so I could purchase locally. Why buy a high end system only to find out Samsung decided to save a few cents by not providing necessary parts? A complete failure in customer support and complete product delivery. Purchase only if you are willing to go through the extra trouble and delay necessary to get a complete package. Certainly a new experience (and a bad one at that).

My bedroom has about $20k in Top end Electronics. I wanted a sound bar and sub so I don't have to turn on Main amp etc. My 55" Samsung 3D TV doesn't get loud enough. I did a lot or research online first. Many years ago I heard a Yamaha Sound bar at a High end shop.. When I went to BestBuy, that's what I wanted to Buy. To find out I can only get Online. I bought this and am Very Satisfied.
