Nice TV with a few shortcomings

Review of UN49MU8000: Nice TV although I would never have paid the full $1,200 or so list price. I got it at Best Buy for $499 on Prime Day.
It is a nice TV with good picture quality (great contrast). Much brighter, clearer, and sharper than my non-4K, mid-range Samsung it replaced. But, I guess that goes without saying.
The few shortcomings: 1. Local dimming is not really complete local dimming. White areas (type, for example) on a black background show glow above and below the type to the edges (because it's an edge-lit TV).
2. The one remote is annoying and requires many more steps than a normal remote to complete various settings and even change the channel. Yes, you can use the remote's voice control which is supposedly more direct, but you have to sign away your privacy rights to do so. I didn't so I can't comment on its effectiveness. I discovered that my old Samsung Smart TV remote worked without limit on this set so I ordered a spare and will use it instead.
3. Not as many apps available as my old TV and not all that were available on it are available on the new TV.
4. Sound is no better than my old Samsung. Not that it's bad for TV watching, but I still will use my home theater receiver for movies and some TV shows.
5. Fine-tuning of settings not as specification-deep as the old set. Not as "fine-tune-able" in every category (picture, sound, broadcast, network, etc.).
In general I would recommend this set but only at a good sale price. It'll do until OLEDs come way down in price. Still miss my Panasonic plasma that died. Nothing came close.

Samsung Awesome!

Samsung has truly built themselves up with a reputation for quality. Still bested in the video realm by their rival Sony, yet manage to manufacture a truly great product that's exciting to watch. The color and resolution of this model is awesome! The color black is incredible. Only thing is I'm not very happy with the TV speakers. At times the audio is scratchy and distorted. I tried to adjust the audio on the TV And my source units but the range of sound quality from this TVs speakers are limited. I believe you cant really expect too much from TV speakers which is why it's always good to invest in a high quality sound bar or a surround sound system. Nevertheless, because I feel they could have and should have done better with their onboard speakers, in giving a 4 star instead of 5. But as I said, the picture quality is very superb and you should be amazed. Truly Wow!

Great tv with small drawbacks

I bought this tv when it was on sale for Black Friday for $700. Really like the tv in general but there are a few small things that irk me, such as the speakers, ads on menu bar, advanced picture mode options, refresh rate for gaming, and the tv being too smart for its own good.
The speakers on this tv are garbage because if you turn it louder than level 20 or 25, after a month of use it seems like the speakers sound crackly and vibrate because it's too much to handle. If you buy this tv after this honest review, I recommend buying a soundbar/subwoofer set.
There is ALWAYS a single ad on the bottom of the main menu. It's not the end of the world for me but it's a little annoying that you can't make it go away.
There aren't a lot of options when it comes to advanced picture mode settings. I don't recommend using the energy saver ones unless you like your tv being dim almost all the time. I didn't buy a 4k tv so I could watch a pitch black movie be even darker. There are decent picture/ sound options to choose from but the menu can be a little confusing and if you don't know what some of the settings even do, you might as well leave them alone. I settled for an advanced "Natural" mode to go with because the "Vivid" for sports and video game options just make everything look neon almost.
I'm not entirely sure if its the refresh rate or input lag but I game a lot and I would not recommend this tv for gaming. I play Fortnite and Destiny 2 heavily, along with streaming 4k Netflix and am not overly pleased with the experience. Netflix looks good I guess, but Destiny has so many great visuals and sounds and it's just not maximized with this tv. Seems like my radar flashes and lags because this tv can't really handle gaming, which isn't great for a tv that is an entry-level "Magnolia" home theater product.
This is a smart tv and sometimes it will annoy me because upon setup and plugging in a cable box, gaming console, or streaming stick etc, the tv automatically recognizes it and asks to help you set up the input for quick access. The remote provided can do so much with so few buttons and apart from it being very bottom heavy, it is pretty sweet. The downside is that sometimes the remote randomly decides that you talking to someone is a command even though you didn't touch the push to speak button, which results in the tv speaking back to you saying something like "unavailable" and scaring you! Also, if you push the power button on the remote accidentally, it thinks you would like to shut the PS4 Pro or cable box off automatically, which really can screw something up. It's perfect for turning on though, because it will automatically power on whatever input is being hovered over, but sometimes you have to hurry and switch to prevent unwanted powerups. This feature is cool to use when you turn your desired box on and the tv auto turns on for you and switches to that input with ease.
Overall, this tv isn't bad. It does have good 4k picture quality but like most tv's the "HDR" isn't always true HDR and in this case it leaves a little more to be desired. I personally hate the "Soap Opera effect" that most advanced tv's have but you have to get used to it if you want to game with amazing graphics.
Aesthetically speaking, this tv is beautiful in terms of it's silvery finish and stand design. Very thin and not super heavy with a VERY small border with exception to the bottom nameplate bezel, which is much thicker but still looks decent.
For the price you pay you can get a much better overall 4k tv experience from another brand. If money isn't a problem for you and you enjoy large tvs I would recommend the Samsung mu9000 series (step above this model) or the QLED models that Samsung offers.

I bought this as an upgrade to replace 7 year old 1080p hd t.v. You can definetly notice the difference in picture quality. Its has brighter, more vibrant colors, and decent dimming and can produce black colors decent. I like the movie mode at night. Video games look great. I don’t know everything about 4k and hdr so I hope I am getting this right. One connect is convienent. I feel like the remote could use more shortcut buttons. Especially for pic. adjustments. Easy to access apps this t.v has. Also has plenty of hdmi ports.

I love this tv so far. Bought it for a room we only watch tv in a hour or so a day. But I'm thinking of moving it to a room we watch tv more so even though it's a slightly smaller screen. The picture is simply amazing, even when watching 720 HD input. Everything is so much brighter and crisper.

Really Nice TV, Quirky Remote
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
This is a really nice tv. Great picture, good sound (I know others have commented the sound is not that great, but it's fine to me - no sound bar or additional speakers), and nice design.
The picture quality and clarity is really amazing - super sharp. Took me a while to figure out some of the Eco/Energy Saving Settings - I almost returned it until I realized there was a setting telling it to turn off based on a sensor.
I use Apple TV for streaming, so I don't use that many of the Smart Features. I did try HBO Now and Netflix - I just get a better picture with the Apple TV.
The Smart Remote is quirky, though. It will randomly turn off my cable box or will change the input source. I know it's the remote because when I put the tv remote away and just use the cable box remote, there aren't any issues. The voice command feature of the tv's Smart Remote works, well, though.
Overall I'm very happy with the purchase.

Television has a great picture but sound and images do not
synchronize so movement of images does not match the sound.
Also the remote control sold with this TV does not control connected equipment as advertised. Geek Squad installer said to just put in away and forget about it and then set up my TV with the Dish
remote.

Our only complaint is the quick setup guide which basically applies to taking the product out of the box and attaching legs and the User Manual which is 22 pages of extremely basic information. I suggest you look at some YouTube videos regarding unboxing and setup. I received a PDF E-manual after I registered the product. I needed to contact Samsung technical support and I did not have to wait in hold and the person I spoke with was knowledgeable and friendly. We have 2 other Samsung televisions, one of which is larger than this one and both included an anchoring device which goes from the back of the television to a hook or screw to the back of the tv stand. I think for the price Samsung should include an anchoring device as not everyone wall mounts their tv in addition to a paper user manual. Not everyone has the same level of computer literacy and needs the paper product.

We've had this TV for a little over a month now and just love the picture quality. The setup was super easy. The TV's sound is just OK so we added the Samsung HW-M550/ZA sound bar. We love the sound bar and it too was easy to setup.

Go with the 2018 Q6 or NU series

It’s not a bad TV at all. I had the 65 inch and after a day or so of playing around with the settings I would say I was relatively happy with it. It’s not as bright as my old LG but the color performance was excellent.
The only thing that sucked was during certain scenes on my unit certain colors would appear grainy. It didn’t happen often but when it did this issue was very distracting. The one sure cool thing about the 65 was that it comes with the oneconnext box. This lets you connect all of your components to a separate box than the tv for a cleaner setup. The remote was also excellent. A little small but very straight forward.
The software is a bit of a let down. It’s not nearly as bad as the Vizio UI but it can be slow especially in the “App Store”.
This year Samsung released the NU and the 2018 Q6FN series. I’d go with one of those as they are an improvement in every way.

Purchased this TV yesterday. Setup was easy. The picture and colors are outstanding. Wife and I were amazed at the brilliance of the picture quality and the UHD made people look like they are live in your room.
I have an Xbox hooked up to it and game play was a vast improvement over the TV that died the day before. The difference between the TVs is fantastic.
