The new QLED technology is pretty neat, was a little worried I usually wait to buy things that don't have a lot of reviews so i'm taking a gamble. so far so good, only had it for a couple weeks.

Wow! This will be long... bear with me! First of all, a ginormous thank-you to our in-home advisor- Jhason, and the Geek Squad- Chris, Brad, and another young man whose name escapes us at the moment. You've made our transition to 4KUHD 65" QLED 7 series easier than we thought possible. Your expertise- from delivery, unpacking, set-up, and then educating us as to how to use everything was so very much appreciated. We went into this whole process sort of knowing what we wanted- to cut our cable and update our TV/music/ home entertainment lifestyle. We were torn between the Bose sound system or Sonos- we chose Sonos. More on that later. We also knew we wanted at least a 55" or 65" Samsung- not sure about size- and were leaning toward the 4KUHDM9000 series. When Jhason came to meet us in mid Oct., we talked about wants and needs, and we settled on the 65" QLED 7 series, Sonos Playbar, a new modem, and Roku premier. Everything was delivered Friday, Nov.10th. Delivery, installation/ set-up were fantastic. Our modem ended up not working, so Brad came back the following Monday with a new modem. The Geek squad were so helpful with many tips, shortcuts, and advice re: the cord cutting process, navigating the remotes and our "Smart" TV's menu. FYI, our TV that we were replacing and wanted to move into the family room was purchased in 2005. Back then, the Sharp Aquos 36LCDD40U was top of the line. It still works beautifully- no problems, and, has a fantastic picture. We asked if the Geek Squad would relocate it for us, and they removed it from our living room and installed it in our family room. Now, it's the kids TV- bigger than the 32" they had previously. FYI: they did charge us for installation. The Q7 picture quality is amazing. Colors just pop, clarity is amazing. Our home has lots of glass, high beams and tons of sunlight, and there is no glare or blind spots. We're constantly exclaiming how everything we watch seems to put us in the middle of the action. We're still figuring it all out. When our kids returned from college over the Thanksgiving holiday, they too were blown away- and couldn't believe the visual quality of all shows they/we were watching. Of course, they were/are much more adept and fearless with exploring everything the TV functionality has to offer. Streaming is still new for us- we're learning more every day, and it's getting a bit easier to maneuver. Again, our college kids and their friends are most helpful with upping our learning curve. The Sonos soundbar is fantastic- but we knew how much we loved it's sound. Again- the kids love it too- they have so much music (i-tunes, Spotify, etc.) and Sonos supports everything they could want and more. And, because it's wi-fi, not Bluetooth the sound clarity is much better by far. We also love that the Sonos system has add on speakers- just what we want- in the not-too-distant future. Modem is great- we needed a high speed for business. And... we cut the cord re: cable TV. Woo-hoo! So- a few things we didn't know about the Q7 Samsung: - it doesn't support Sling (yet?), so we purchased the Roku premier. Maybe when the system updates? - we were told the Sonos soundbar was going to be mounted on the TV- but the Sonos is not able to be Q7 mounted. So, Q7 is mounted on our wall, Sonos is on mounted on the beam beneath the TV. - Sonos soundbar is not compatible with the Q7 remote, so you will need a separate remote control for your volume adjustments. Or, you can download the Sonos app on your phone /tablet and control TV volume thru the app. Other than that, everything is perfect. FYI: we also purchased Geek Squad protection for 2 years. What might be helpful for future customers and all BB employees? Our In-home advisor, the Geek Squad, Best Buy store employees and BestBuy.com all had a different answer re: a question we posed. Even though everyones experiences and purchases/contracts vary, it might be helpful if all -both customers and employees- are on the same page. We're happy so far! We will update with any/all changes. Thank-you, Best Buy!!!!

For those unfamiliar with QLED's, they are Samsung's flagship sets for 2017. Samsung is the only one of the big three TV manufactures that did not release an OLED for 2017, so to remain competitive, Samsung released their QLED. Once again, note that the QLED is still a LED and not an OLED so a comparison cannot be made with an OLED since they are different technologies. This review will focus on the Q7 and compare it to similar LED televisions. The design aspect of the Q7 is both gorgeous and deceptively costly. The borders of the TV are very small, and the screen comes near the very edge. The set is also very thin and can be mounted very close to the wall. The Q line can be augmented to increase its design with Samsung's no gap wall mount, gravity and easel stands. While optional, these accessories cost extra in addition to the TV (for instance the no gap mount is $150 while the gravity stand will be much more), but are strictly optional. What is not optional, is the One Connect Box. While the MU series uses the smaller One Connect Mini we're all use too, the Q series uses a massive box that oddly enough, requires a separate power cord. This is a nuisance if you did not plan for it. You may be out of electrical outlets on your wall/surge protector, or not have any viable place to hold the large One Connect Box. This is not a deal breaker by any means, just something to be aware of. The picture quality of the Q7 is the most important aspect of the TV. The set uses Quantum Dots to get its color. The Quantum Dot technology is nothing new, in fact it was a big selling point to KS series of last year and has been used by other manufactures. The Q series uses a more robust version of Quantum Dots and does improve its color over last year's KS sets. Unfortunate, there is very little to no improvement is most other aspect of picture quality. This is a shame considering the starting price point of the Q7. Furthermore, the Q7 is an edge lit television. This means that the black levels on the Q7 are nearly the same as that on the MU9000. The lack of full array is, in my opinion, the single biggest missed opportunity on the Q7, as that would have increased its contrast ratio and black levels. The viewing angels are also similar to the MU, with the Q7 losing some color and black levels at an off angle. It is clear that Samsung placed an emphasis on design with the Q series. The Q7 is a great looking TV that can mounted or stood with Samsung's extra accessories. It is a shame however, that Samsung did not do more to improve the overall picture quality of the Q7. Picture wise, it is best described as a direct descendant to the KS9000, with improved color, brightness and a smoother, more connected OS. But the price of the Q7 is not appropriate for the technology packed in the set. In fact, I would say, you are paying more for the design and the QLED name, more than the picture quality. To sum up my thoughts on the Q7, I would rate the television 4.4 out of 5 for quality, but a 3.5 out of 5 for value. The Q7 is not a bad television by any measure. Its design is wonderful and the set is an improvement in color and contrast over last year’s Samsung’s. But that improvement is minimal, which makes the asking price for the Q7 somewhat unjustified. If and when the Q7’s price is a few hundred more than the MU9000, I would recommend taking a look at the Q7 for an even better television. As is stands at the moment of writing however, the 65MU9000 is a better set for the price. And the Sony 65X930E is a better LED set overall, while being less than the Q7. This currently makes the Q7 hard to recommend, but those who do purchase it will still get an excellent Samsung television that is better than both the KS and MU series.
