The TV only worked for about 2 hours after installation. After the geek squad techs left, the TV was working fine. I turned it off to go have some dinner, and when I tried to turn it back on afterwards, it wouldn't turn on at all. I called the geek squad help number, and tried all the things that were recommended to me over the phone, and none of them worked. Geek squad said that I would need a tech to come out to the house to diagnosis the problem. I told him I didn't want someone to look into a problem for a TV that only worked for 2 hours, and that I wanted to return it. He made the appointment for the return, and I went to the store and bought a Sony instead. Samsung used to be a decent brand, but not any longer. I should have did some more research on this particular model, as it seems to have some numerous problems.

Bought this set 16 months ago for approx $3,000 now its dead and repair estimate is $1200. No abuse just straight up died. I searched the web and it seems that getting intermittent black screens (which I did) and a dead system are pretty common for this model. I will likely need to replace this set as the parts for repair are at least 2 months out. Not really wanting to spend 2 months of potentially stay at home quarantine time without a tv to watch. I really have reservation about purchasing Samsung again given this experience.

Horrible software. Directtvnow cant be deleted, and doesn't work. The channnel button forces every app to the built in piece of junk called pluto. Nothing but political ads and unwatchable tv. If my function button takes me to unlimited political ads, you should be regulated. The short is, pretty, but dont trust a single built in app. Absolutly the worst tech i have purchased.

As the new television are out, time to pickup a display model. I have been reviewing the 2018 Samsung Q9F flagship. While here, they had one for sale, good price but more importantly it was the only one. I did as anyone would, a very close inspection for damage and all parts needed, having seen none I purchased it. Now the terrible experience of a company that has too many employees handling high end electronics. We set up the installation all knowing how it works and piece of mind allowing Best Buy to handle it. The geek squad arrived, buy the way they are very professional and proceeded with the installation. They realize that a major component was missing, which was there upon my inspection, so they put back my old TV and apologized and took it back. I received a call an hour latter, they were coming back with all the parts needed. Another removal of the TV and new location of my mount, the geek squad mounted the Qled only to find out the screen was cracked and it appeared to have been dropped. Sorry for the 4 men x 5 and a half hours only to go back to the Store with the TV in tow. Best Buy needs more mangers that pay attention to their bottom line, for time is money and reputation is everything. My original judgement of An Open Box came to what I thought, buy New and have piece of mind. So glad my business doesn’t run this way, I’d be out of business. A new Qled will find its way on the wall SOON. Thanks BEST BUY for what I was sure would happen, I’ll have a better chance of hitting the lottery. LOL.

I bought this TV in Oct last year and I have to battle with this TV since then. This TV will shut down by itself and we need to spend at least 10 mins to an hour to disconnect and connect the optical cable and power cable hundred times to turn the TV back on. I have called the customer support almost every month when I have no way to turn on the TV for couple days to more than one week to ask for help. They promised to send me a new optical cable. After two months, I didn’t receive anything. I called them again and they said the cable was shipped and I asked the customer rep why it took two months to ship the parts and he didn’t answer my question. Now, one month later, still not receive the cable and I am starting to wonder if it is Samsung’s strategy to drag time until the one year is expired so they don’t have to take care of my issue anymore. I will never buy any TV at this price. I think a basic TV worth $500 should better than this crap. Of course, no need to mention Best Buy, it was not their issue and no help can be offered.

When it works it's great. But after 7 months the remote stopped working. Samsung sent me a new remote to replace the bad one. Then a couple of weeks later the tv shut off by it self and would not come back on with remote or manually. Then when I waled buy it the next day it came on by it self for a little while and then shut off again. Best buy came and took it apart and replaced the main board in back of the tv and it came on for a little while and then shut off again. Now I have to wait another week for a new One Connect Box and cable. I've been with out a working tv now for 3 weeks. I'm very disappointed in the quality off this expensive tv. By it at your on risk.

After 8 weeks, the top 1/3 of the television screen had a dark shadow. It was like watching people in witness protection. Samsung customer service replaced it after one phone call. They seem aware they have a problem. The delivery men who exchanged it said they had exchanged 8 on the previous day.

Let me start by saying, if you had your reservations about QLED, fear no more, this TV is a thing of beauty. The picture is phenomenal, the black levels are definitely on par with OLED and the color is awesome. I highly, highly recommend this TV. Samsung listened to their customers and went above and beyond with this tv. I used to be a huge OLED fan, and had my reservations about this TV, but once set up in my living room, WOW. If you are looking for the best TV in the market, let this be an option. With this TV you get the brightest picture, great motion, great TV OS, and unlike OLED, ZERO burn-in/image retention.

Things to consider before you buy

My review for the Samsung QN65Q9FNAF I spent weeks researching the best TV and I decided to purchase the top of the line: Samsung QLED -QN65Q9FNAF. I have been around electronics all my life; I was a supervisor at a University’s audio visual department for 24 years; after having this TV for 2 weeks I can only give it a 3 star rating based on the following: PICTURE: The 65” picture is very, very good however it did not blow me away like I thought a Qled top of the line TV would. SETUP AND OPERATION: Setting up this TV is very confusing and basic operation is confusing; the TV does not come with a user manual so you must go on line to download it, I printed all 171 pages just to find out that it does not 7fully explain what you are doing when you follow the instructions. It shows you where certain settings are but that’s it, if you have several choices it does not tell you what each one does and trying to add other devices such as a DVD player and to make it recognize the device so confusing I had to call Samsung Technical Support to take control of the TV so they could set the TV to recognize the device. REMOTE CONTROL: The remote control is touted by Samsung as the only “ONE” remote that you will ever need for everything, well this is simply not true; the remote is small with about 10 function buttons on it, which is supposed to control your cable box and all devices connected to the TV, in order for it to control the cable box you must press a series of buttons on the remote and then select from the on screen menu, wow about ten steps , whereas on the cable box remote you have to only press one button! Needless to say I rather use the cable box remote control. In addition the Samsung remote cannot select certain functions for your Cable box, DVD player and I can’t find anywhere to control the Amazon Fire TV. I have a Harmony One remote that will not completely work with the Samsung QN65Q9FNAF. So now I am using 4 remote controls whereas I use to use only the Harmony One with my old TV. AUDIO: The built in speakers on this TV are absolutely TERRIBLE! Even when you find out how to make certain sound settings, it does not improve the audio. For a $4,000.00 television I expect quality audio from the TV speakers, not something tinny that sounds like a cheap speaker on an old transistor radio. I decided to hookup my old auxiliary amplifier receiver, which would not work; after talking with the amp’s manufacture (Sony) and Samsung Support (talked between the two support teams for 5 hours, it was then determine that the audio amp receiver system was incompatible with the Samsung TV. I decided to purchase a Yamaha sound bar, I could not get the new sound bar to work with the TV so I called Yamaha support, the tech. was very knowledgeable and even downloaded a copy of the Samsung QN65Q9FNAF manual to help with trying to get the sound bar to work with the TV he spent an hour on the phone with me trying to figure out how to make the TV recognized the sound bar, after trying various settings the TV still would not recognized the sound bar, he finally gave up and said I would have to call Samsung; the Samsung technical support took remote control of the TV and change a setting which made the TV recognize the sound bar, the settings he performed appears nowhere in the Samsung QN65Q9FNAF manual or online. Samsung Support: Samsung support for me was excellent, and I have spoken to a dozen or more support people, I like the fact that they can remotely take over the TV to find and resolve the problem. I hope this review will help people with their decision on what TV to purchase.

I have had my new Q9 for 15 days. I am satisfied with every aspect of this TV. I really didn’t understand what having truly black blacks meant before now. When the screen goes black it disappears. The cable that goes to the TV from the One Connect box is much smaller than a speaker wire and carries both data and power, simply amazing. I have always had a computer connected to my TV since XP days, believe it or not. This TV is vying to replace my Alienware HTPC with the built-in Prime Video, Prime Music, YouTube, and many other apps like Netflix etc. The browser I have not played with much but seems a little less powerful/intuitive/flexible than Chrome or Firefox but passable. I was again amazed with the ability to add my Gyration mouse and keyboard via the USB port, the TV never skipped a beat. The ambient mode perhaps needs some additional work, maybe in subsequent software releases. I would like the ability to load several of my photos to be cycled automatically, as well as delete the preloaded photos. Samsung needs to explain the sizing in pixels for personal photos. I made my photos fit their “frame” by making them 8000x3700 pixels, not sure if that is the correct way, but it worked. Hopefully later releases will allow changing the photo “matte” within the frame beyond what is loaded, even though some modification is allowd. Bottom line, I can’t believe I’m as happy as I am, and for this much money I’m glad I am!

Does NOT support DTS/Dolby passthrough from HDMI

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The TV image quality is phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. The chassis design is the same. Excellent large wall mount choice. However as a TV geared towards gamers with the support of freesync it is absurd that not only does the TV not support DTS audio in any way shape or form, but it doesn't even support passing Dolby 5.1 from an incoming HDMI signal (even on the ARC port). I have confirmed this with Samsung support. Buried in Samsung's support site is an article detailing this but it only specifies a different model, no mention of the problem on 2018 QLED series. The articles states the following: _______ The Digital Audio Out allows you to select the audio format that you would like to output the sound from your TV, PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, and DTS Neo 2.5. However, there are restrictions on when digital (Dolby & DTS) signals are allowed to be selected. The Digital Audio format is only available to be selected when the TV is decoding the Digital signal and not an outside source. This means that there will only be three instances when you will be able to select Digital options as your output audio format. When the TV is receiving an ATSC or QAM channel that is carrying the Digital audio track. When the TV is using a streaming service, such as Amazon VOD, Vudu, Hulu, etc. that has a Digital track. When using the TVs Allshare functions (USB or Network) and the file includes a supported digital track. Because the TV does not decode the signal (it is decoded at the sources and then sent to the TV) from an HDMI source the digital options will not be available from any HDMI sources. _______ Since this line of TVs is the first on the market with freesync and VRR support the above issue forces gamers to choose between using freesync or having surround sound. This is due to the fact that the only way to get surround sound from an HDMI source (with the 2018 samsung QLED tvs) is to use an external AV receiver, which is usually a great idea, however there are no AV receivers on the market that can pass through freesync. And honestly I doubt there ever will be as that would introduce latency to a technology literally designed to combat latency. Therefore the only option for surround on these QLED TVs while maintaining freesync is to run optical audio directly from your HDMI sources, and either send it to an optical switcher or an AV receiver, then pass that optical audio out to a soundbar. In my own case replacing my much less expensive and 6 year old vizio (which has proper dolby/dts hdmi to optical bitstream passthrough) with this new Samsung Q9FN will require me to buy at minimum a $30 optical audio switcher, a 50ft optical audio cable (requiring re-running with the HDMI cable), 2 more 2 meter optical audio cables, and about $60 sound card to encode the surround sound, and dealing with the annoyance of another remote control to switch between optical inputs. And the irony of all that complaining? I'm still keeping the TV. It's that great of a picture. I even managed to find 1 stuck pixel in the very top-right corner which in the past would have had me return a TV in an instant. However on this 4K display I can only see it when im closer than 1 meter from the TV (it's 65 inches so that never happens), and due to the local dimming it's completely invisible in dark scenes (whereas on the cheaper Q6FN/Q7FN it may be visible due to edge-lit... but still hard to see from distance). Overall pleased I suppose. Except for the crazy high price. Samsung support was pretty decent too when engaging them about the audio passthrough but they were powerless to do anything but apologize after verifying the issue. That said, as of writing this review the Q6FN 65" is only $1299 while the 65 Q9FN is $2999. That's a huge difference for the jump from edge to high end full array local dimming and the slimmer model using one connect box.

    The Definition of Innovation

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Samsung Q9FN is the most impressive Television I've ever owned. It defines Samsung as a company who likes to be innovative and do their own thing no matter what everyone else is doing. Samsung could have copied everyone else and Went with OLED but they wanted better than OLED and designed QLED. Then instead of Android they went with Tizen for the Operating System. Which I truly love over Android TV OS as they have a few kinks to work out still. Out of the box the Q9FN is easy to set up. It is a little heavier and thicker than a lot of TVs but it also has Backlit lighting system which of course give it more weight and thickness but allows for a better picture than the edge lit lighting they went with last year which an amazing improvement. Once you have the tv stand installed you just connect the one connect box with a single ultra thin cable and then plug all of your devices into the one connect box, which allows for easy cable management, and allows you to show off the tv without worrying about all the wires. It also allows you to take a picture of your wall if you have it wall mounted and have the TV blend in with your wall for a fully hidden TV. The controller for the TV is the best controller I have ever used. It is solid and does everything you need while staying simplified and easy to use. Once you turn on the TV it will guide you through the setup process and it is easily connected to your samsung account and allows you to set up everything very easily as it walks you through. The display is absolutely beautiful and stunning. Watching any 4k HDR content is simply a dream come true merging you with whatever you are watching and making it feel like you are right there. The coloring and contrast is unrivaled and is stunning. The motion smoothing is very fluid and is one of the best on a TV I have ever seen. I am not a huge fan myself of this but if you are you will be very happy. There is no lagging or stutter with the motion and it is buttery smooth even during intense action sequences. The gaming mode with my PS4 Pro is probably my absolute favorite thing. It has the lowest input lag(delay between pressing a button and seeing the game react) of any television I have ever used. It is almost as good as my gaming monitor and it makes it great to play Call of Duty as I am able to react that much quicker without my controller taking longer to respond. Video Games with HDR mode added look bright and colorful and ultra realistic. Every detail is seen clearly and without any pixilation. The TV supports Dolby Digital, plus and HDR10+ which pairs extremely well with my surround sound bringing me more into any movie or game and adds so much more immersion and pushes you into it. A theater experience at home. Dolby Vision support isn't included but considering that dolby charges for that and HDR10+ is extremely close its better than charging more for an unnecessary feature that may or may not make a difference. Overall the Samsung Q9F is closest thing to perfection that a TV can be for now. If you are a lover of media at all then you will fall in love with thiS TV. *I received this product as part of the Insiders program.
