great sound, but.......
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is my review of the Samsung, HW Q90R, a very, very good sounding soundbar!. This review is a little tough for me. The particular unit I received has had an issue that Samsung is working on rectifying, but because of this issue, I am having a really hard time putting my thoughts into how i want to describe this soundbar, but here it goes. When my unit is functioning properly, the Q90R sounds as good as any soundbar I have ever had the opportunity to listen too. When set up properly, the unit delivers more than ample bass and has a wide expansive, room filling sound that I really enjoy. The Q90R is a true 7.1.4 that supports DTSx and dolby Atmos. These types of soundtracks really show what this soundbar can do. I have had the opportunity to own some very nice soundbars the past 4 years and this one is the best I have had. I really appreciate the sound when watching Netflix or streaming from Pandora or Amazon music, the sound really fills my room. This soundbar operates in the Alexa ecosystem. I have always been a Google guy, but the Q90R does not support chromecast or google. Because this soundbar only supports Alexa, I brought home a couple of Amazon dots to play with at my house. I have to admit, the Alexa thing isn't too bad. There are 3 HDMI inputs, one of which is eARC and 1 optical input. You can connect via wi fi or bluetooth as well. Here is the problem I am having that is making it hard to write this review. I am sure it is just a problem with my unit, but since day one, in order to hear sound from my sub or my surround speakers, that by the way, are included with the Q90R, I have to go through the entire setup process again after I turn off the system for a couple of hours (or minutes sometimes). Samsung has sent my unit back for repair and paid the shipping cost, but this afternoon I received my system and the problem is exactly as it was when I sent it off a week ago. I really have not had a chance to sit back and just enjoy the sound from this extraordinary system, I am constantly re-associating the bluetooth speakers to the bar in order to get everything to play. In fact, as soon as I finish this review, I will be boxing the entire system back up to send to the Samsung repair center again. Hopefully, they will spend a little more time examining what is going on with this unit. Samsung has been helpful in getting the product returned at no cost to me, except the 30 mile round trip to the UPS store, but it is sad to have such a nice piece of equipment right here in front of me and not be able to enjoy what it can do. I will still recommend this product, because it is a great soundbar and comes with most of the bells and whistles you would want, including great sound and good looks (and nice surround speakers). I am certain that my example is an exception, and anything man-made is destined to suffer a failure at some point. Samsung has been nice so far dealing with the issue, I just wish they would take this one back and send a replacement so I can sit back and enjoy the sound.

Defective out of the box.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Soundbar Right Up-firing speaker sound was distorted; hissing/buzzing. Also, with Rear Surround speakers volume set at max +6 Dolby Atmos rear signals were barely audible. Installed latest firmware from Samsung and problems remained unchanged. One known problem is voice/video syncing. Bottom line: Samsung HW-Q90 Soundbar is too expensive.

Thank you for purchasing the HW-Q90R Soundbar. By design, the surround speakers are supposed to simulate sounds happening behind the viewer. Therefore, most of the time the surround channels are only used for ambient sounds, which are naturally lower in volume.
However, there are a few settings you can change to adjust the surround effect to your preference:
1) Make sure that the source (e.g. TV output) is sending surround channels to the Soundbar. If the source is not capable of surround, then set the Surround mode to OFF on the Soundbar by pressing the Surround button on the remote.
2) If the source has surround channels, select the desired Sound Mode from the Soundbar remote.
3) Turn off Dynamic Range Control. This is done by pressing and holing the Sound Mode button while the Soundbar is in standby mode. Depending on your soundbar model, you may or may not have DRC.
4) Increase the volume level of the surround speakers using the Sound Control button on your Soundbar's remote control (looks like a gear), then select REAR LEVEL and use the Up/Down buttons to adjust the volume within a -6 to +6 range.

Negative review for Best Buy Clearwater, FL
||Posted . Owned for less than 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This negative review is for best buy clearwater, fl. They sold me a defective product, which they probably knew it was. You guys really wasted my time because i had to take time off from work to return this thing. NB: If you plan on buying an open box soundbar, which was probably on display, whose speakers are probably already blown out or messed up Bluetooth - have them at least test it. Would they have included, "Maybe defective" in their open box bullets, i sure would not have bought it. I just assumed best buy test their products before reselling, lesson learned, never trust anyone.

Good With Room For Improvement
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Generally speaking, I don't care for soundbars. While the sound is better than what comes out of the TV speakers, it isn't the same as what you'd get out of a typical home theater system. Throughout the years, my system has changed numerous times. Stereo, 2.1, 3.1, 5.1...different speakers, different receivers, but this is my first experience owning a soundbar. Samsung and Harmon Kardon partnered to create the Q90 sound bar. The Q90 is a true 7.1.4 system that provides 7 surround channels, 1 subwoofer channel and 4 Dolby ATMOS channels to fill your room with sound. One of the issues with a typical 7.1 system is finding a space to place all the speakers without sacrificing livability. The beauty of what Samsung has done is putting 7 channels (two front, center, two surround - plus 2 upfiring for ATMOS) in the soundbar. The remaining 2 surround channels and ATMOS channels are in the wireless rear speakers. This limits the floor and walls space that'd normally be required for a 7.1.4 system. However, this makes for a very larger and heavy soundbar. Sound quality is fantastic. Out of the box, I felt the subwoofer volume was a little low, but channels can all be adjusted using the remote. If you download the Samsung SmartThings app, you can also tweak frequencies using the 7-band equalizer. This is much nicer than the typical high/low adjustments when using the remote. I did have issues with the subwoofer and rear speakers disconnecting and reading other reviews, it sounds as though others have had the same problem. Hopefully Samsung will release a firmware update to address this as it's an issue for a high-end system. Once this issue is addressed, I'll change my "would recommend to a friend" vote from a no to a yes. One recommendation for the next version would be a setup/calibration mic like what's used with home theater receivers. Or would it be possible to use the mic on a smartphone? This will have the system auto-calibrate the system based on room acoustics as well as set speaker delay. It isn't a huge deal as the system sounds great, but not being able to set the delay based on my listening position seems like a miss for an ATMOS system.

Thank you for your review of this Samsung HW-Q90 Soundbar. I am very sorry to hear that you are having issues with the subwoofer and rear speakers disconnecting.
• Receiving antennas are built into the wireless subwoofer and surround speakers. For optimal performance, make sure that the areas around the wireless subwoofer and surround speaker locations are clear of any obstructions.
• If you use a device near the Soundbar that uses the same frequency (5.8GHz) as the Soundbar, interference may cause some sound interruption.
• The maximum transmission distance of the main unit’s wireless signal is about 32 ft., but may vary depending on your environment. Note that the system may not operate if there is a steel-concrete, or metallic wall between the main unit and wireless subwoofer and surround speakers.
I hope these tips help to solve your issue.

Overall, I Like It
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a good soundbar system. My first one did not work, so I had to send it back for a replacement. My replacement came (probably a refurbished) and at first it seemed like I had to keep re-linking the rear speakers and sub but that behavior stopped and it is working as it should. I should start out by saying the box for this is huge! You need team lift for this, or a dolly, or you can drag it. It comes with the main soundbar, a subwoofer, 2 rear speakers, the things to drill into the wall so you can attach the soundbar to the wall, remote + batteries, 4 U.S. power cords (my defective unit also came with 4 Euro power cords; the replacement did not) and manual. Important: the soundbar is huge and suuuuuuper heavy! Keep this in mind if your goal is to put this on your wall. The subwoofer is as heavy as expected. The rear speakers have some weight on them, but they are not heavy. The unit is black. The emblem that says "Samsung harmon kardon" is silver and on each piece of the system. So I connected this to my KS8000 series Samsung tv. I connected by HDMI Arc. According to the manual, all you have to do is plug everything in and then it should connect. The manual forgot to mention to plug everything in and then TURN ON THE SOUNDBAR, and then everything should connect. With that said, connection was simple and quick. You can also connect manually if needed. My previous soundbar was a Samsung 2.1 and I liked it. It did my small living room justice. I was unsure about this soundbar system at first but then I realized 4k movies made a difference; and certain 4k movies made an even bigger difference. You really need to throw a 4k movie at it to truly hear what it can do. I watched a bunch of 4k movies and was pleased with some of them, but I think that is dependent on the movie. Of all the movies I watched, Transformers: Dark of the Moon (the 3rd one) had the best sound (front speakers, rear speakers, base... it all came to life). This soundbar system is better than my previous 2.1 when it comes to 4k movies. I don't know if I necessarily heard much of a difference when watching blu rays and when watching regular tv. Overall, I don't hear too much from the rear speakers (except with Transformers 3), but they are in fact on and working. Maybe I have to keep playing with the sound settings. Also, I would like more thunder rumbling bass. But I must say, deep voice characters (such as Optimus Prime and Megatron) sound GREAT coming through the subwoofer. Also the soundbar has 12 or so speakers in it << that is worth mentioning. I also tested the Bluetooth feature. It paired right away with my iPod touch and I was able to play music. The music came through all the speakers and sounded good. On a side note, I bought a pair of speaker stands for the rear speakers because I didn't trust my wall and didn't feel like even trying with the wall. They were simple to assemble and work well for the speakers. I almost forgot to mention that there is a Samsung app that you can use to connect with the soundbar and then use your phone to control it. I have it but I don't use it. The soundbar remote is like all the other Samsung remotes - small formed with a curve on the bottom and not too many buttons. One annoyance is that if the soundbar is on but not being used it will timeout and turn off. Sometimes, I pause my movies for some time and then when I press play again the soundbar is off. Yes, all I have to do is turn it on; but how about just stay on. I don't need my soundbar to turn off; that's dumb. Just turn on when I turn on the tv, which it does. To conclude with a positive, I do think the overall sound comes together well and sounds as one. I would recommend this. I like it. It does come with a high price tag though.

It was nice with some frustrations
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The sound quality was good. As a surround setup, it's nice. But as atmos, the chances that you'll bounce sound from the ceiling and land in dead your head and notice it, is a hit or miss. When i had this unit, there weren't enough atmos content to justify it's purchase anyways. I could also sometimes hear a hiss from the rear speakers. It had enough juice to get nice and loud, exept for some netflix movies that were mixed so anoyingly low that max volume was still quiet. I'd say it's a netflix problem. The stereo separation distance is good enough for smaller tvs, but for bigger tvs, it's a bit narrow, understandibly so, being a soundbar. Other than that, it sounded nice.
