Using it on a smaller room, so I never get to crank it all the way up, but at about 30%, it's incredibly loud for its size and the Atmos is very convincing, bass is also deep and clean, unless you're a bass nut like me and look for the deepest notes, this should be plenty of bass for movies.
The only reason for not being a 5 Star is that I wish they had gone with a bigger bass, like how the JBL bars do. However, bass is much more accurate and refined on this Samsung.
It paired up very well with my LG C9 and I never experienced any of the "crackling" sound I was reading before purchasing it. Sound is extremely clean.
*TIP*: make sure to turn the "Side" speakers volume higher than the rest to even out the soundstage and have a more convincing Surround.

Using it over a Samsung QN55Q80TAFXZA in a smaller room. We sit about 6 ft away from the TV so we get an immersive visual experience with this smaller display and now we have an immersive aural one as well.
Setup was mostly easy. I love how you just plug the surrounds and subwoofer into the wall and they talk wirelessly to the soundbar. But we needed to use the Samsung App on the phone to update the firmware and it took several tries but it now is at the latest 1008.0 firmware.
The Xbox needs to be plugged into a soundbar HDMI input and it is important that the TV be plugged into it's special TV HDMI out port on the soundbar and thence into the ARC HDMI 4 port on the TV. You keep the TV input set to HDMI 4.
We do get ATMOS from the XBOX (which is really cool) but I'm still not sure if the TV can sent ATMOS back to the sound bar through the ARC. We seem to have lost the XBOX auto GAME mode select on the TV so we keep the soundbar HDMI 4 video source set to game mode ON and just use the TV itself for Netflix / Amazon / etc. as most movies are just 5.1...
If we want to use just the TV, it's a bit cumbersome. Although the TV will turn the soundbar off, it doesn't seem to wake up the soundbar automatically when we power the TV on. We need to wait for the TV to complain that there is no source on HDMI4 and then select the power on button in the TV screen to send the power up command to the soundbar (we have put the soundbar remote away as it looks just like the TV remote and becomes a source of confusion in low light...). Once the soundbar is on, we can then select the local app to run on the TV. We check the TV sound routing by adjusting the TV volume and looking to see what the volume is talking to (soundbar over HDMI). Maybe I've just got it set up wrong and would be glad to hear from people who have conquered these Game mode and power on problems.
It's a bit disappointing that you can't configure the soundbar from a menu it displays on the TV screen: you have to do it manually with the remote control and the tiny display on the soundbar or the Samsung App which is not so great either....
Bottom line is this can produce GREAT sound, but it's just not quite yet seamlessly integrated into the TV.

After researching many options for replacing my traditional receiver and 6 speakers surround sound system, at the recommendation of an electronics specialist, I decided to try a Sonos Playbar paired with a Sonos subwoofer. Although setup was easy with Sonos, the sound was less than the quality I was hoping for. In my opinion, tinny, weak, and difficult to adjust to anything I considered decent. I then decided to try the Samsung HW-Q90R Soundbar based on all the positive reviews and the cost being close to the Sonos system. Having Harman-Kardon involved with the Samsung product design was also a big plus. I must say, I'm so glad I did try the Samsung soundbar. Although setup was a little more time consuming with the HW-Q90R, the sound quality actually equaled or surpassed my traditional surround system. The wireless rear speakers and sub were easy to pair with the main soundbar, and updating the firmware was easy using a USB drive. I recommend you read online and watch YouTube videos before setting the system up. I haven't paired the soundbar with Alexa or any music services yet using the Smart-Things app, as the soundbar was purchased to mainly use with TV viewing, but eventually I will. I would not hesitate to recommend the Samsung HW-Q90R.

I wanted to get a good atmos soundbar as I had to downsize and sell my dedicated home theater setup. Have gone through a lot of comparisons and finally decided to get this soundbar.
This is a decent looking soundbar, nicely constructed and overall looks are good.
Now the first and foremost problem with this soundbar is your Wi-Fi router signal interfere with Soundbar's wireless connectivity. Whenever there is lot of data transfer (like watching a 4k content), this soundbar keeps on losing the subwoofer and surround connectivity. The surround speaker produces crackling sound and the sub woofer produces sounds as if the woofer is broken.
@Samsung, please don't comment saying to upgrade the three units (soundbar, surrounds and subwoofer) to latest firmware. I have verified multiple times that all three units are on the latest firmware by verifying the numbers that gets displayed on the soundbar. And the issue happens mostly when streaming content. I have placed the Wi-Fi router at different places within home and sometimes it helps but not always.
When everything works it sounds great, however that is just temporary and you loose the connectivity to surrounds and subwoofer. I could also see the blue light behind the surrounds and subwoofer blinking (which indicates the connectivity is not stable).
I always believed I could fix this by tweaking the router position and now got tired of it. I have gone past the return window that BestBuy provided and I am now stuck with this.
@BestBuy/@Samsung - Is there a way I can return this? I am tired of using this soundbar and will never get back to Samsung unless they fix the issue or provide me a refund.

For Black Friday i bought a Bose 700 soundbar and the 700 bass module for my living room. I love it. A few weeks ago i was buying a new bedroom tv and got a great deal on this Q90r. Holy crap! It blows the Bose out of the water! Maybe because it’s in my bedroom but the bass fills the entire room, the sound is very subversive and i can’t believe it’s all coming from just this unit. My reason for not giving it 5 stars is that Samsung keeps dragging their feet on the E arc update that was promised months ago!

I experienced disconnect issues initially due to rears and sub going into sleep mode. Once the firmware was updated I have had no issues with the unit. Sound is great and well balanced.
The only thing I did not like was the fact best Buy does not offer Geek Squad protection on this system, despite being a Magnolia product.

My new Samsung Harmon Kardon (q 90) sound bar is excellent once it is set up properly. There were a couple of issues. Voice and picture were not synced and the Geek Squad told me to set the TV audio output to STEREO. This solved the sync problem but then I was not sure I was getting true surround sound from the system. A call directly to Samsung solved this problem. They told me to set the source on the sound bar to D.IN. This worked and I was able to set the TV audio output to 5.1.
One other precaution, and this is likely a no brainer for technically minded folks, but after doing the above at first I was still not getting the proper sound from the system. I even tried resetting the speakers as directed by Samsung. The resolution? My TV audio was somehow set to STANDARD. I needed to set it to SURROUND. Now I have excellent surround sound with voices that are deep and rich. Music sounds excellent on this system also.
In the Oxford Valley store Rob was especially helpful in helping me to select this system. He displayed great knowledge and patience with me. Ed and Marcial were both especially helpful at other times.

I wanted something simple yet great sounding, but I'm very impressed by this soundbar. I was coming from a 7.2 channel Yamaha receiver and Klipsch Reference setup and I'm so glad I switched over. It takes up less power, and definitely less space, yet sounds much bigger than I expected. When my lights are off, I would never guess it's coming from a soundbar. It's not the cheapest, but it's much cheaper than my previous setup and so convenient. If you are hesitant about getting a soundbar, especially one this expensive, don't be. It's worth every penny, and actually more. I am completely happy with it and I don't think I'll ever go back to a traditional setup again. I have it hooked up to my LG 65" B9 OLED, my OPPO blu-ray player, my Roku, and my Nintendo switch. It even comes with a remote. the subwoofer and rear speakers are wireless so it's totally flexible. You'll have zero regrets if you buy this soundbar. It's one of the best purchases I've ever made.

This is an amazing sounding soundbar, but Samsung released or before it was ready. The Samsung support is so bad and unresponsive to do many complaints from people globally. But in the end they updated the firmware to fix the major problems in the US, but other parts of the world are still waiting. Even still there are issues with the firmware design, in my opinion, especially how it all requires the use of their SmartThings app, which is horrible piece of junk app.

I have been searching for something to upgrade my televisions sound recently. Due to owning a Samsung 4K television, I wanted to move from an older 2.1 channel Samsung Soundbar to something with a bit more power and Dolby Atmos integration. I was lucky in that my search turned up the Samsung Q90R on clearance, with additional savings as an open box item at Best Buy! For the price, I cannot think of a better deal. The system is wireless, simple to set up, and if you stream content that is Atmos supported (Disney+, etc.), than this is a no-brainer. I like the HDMI pass through feature, which allows two devices to run through the soundbar. The four preset sound modes work well, and it allows you to further tweak the sound and subwoofer should you desire. All around, this system has made me fall in love with some of my favorite films again. There really is nothing like watching a movie with good, quality immersive sound!

Replaced an old, wired, surround set of Legacy speakers with this. While it does not compare well to he Legacy's, which previously were in a home theater and moved to a smaller space, it performs well in the smaller space. The Legacy's were too much power for the smaller space. It is possible that there is some setting that can raise the volume on the rear speakers, but haven't found it yet. Currently connected to Samsung 9500 series 65" TV. Setup problems required call to Samsung support, which was very good.

I've had this soundbar for about 6 weeks as of this review, and I must say I absolutely love it. It have it paired with a 2018 LG OLED, and has had no problems as far as compatibility, including HDMI ARC support. Setup was painless, except for disposing of the massive box it came in. Post setup, I did experience issues with the rear speakers dropping out. I checked the firmware and found it was still on 1006, so I updated it to 1008 and the problem went away. Make sure you upgrade the firmware before calling tech support or returning the product! This was a massive upgrade from the system I was using prior, and I highly recommend it to anybody out there looking for the best possible soundbar experience.

Don’t listen to the bad reviews on Samsung’s website. I originally had the Q80, returned because I wanted the rear speakers. A little scared about all the disconnection issues I read about, but I haven’t had a single problem with that at all! Just plug in the way the manual says, connect to SmartThings and update the firmware. Then be amazed!! I love the rear speakers and the sound that comes out. The only flaw this has, is that the input changes doesn’t sync all the time to my Q80r tv. So, to change your sources from one device to another, you have to use the soundbar remote to do that sometimes. Small inconvenience for an amazing soundbar. As far as I’m concerned that should be the only problem you may get until a firmware update to fix. Otherwise you probably have a defective device if anything else is wrong. Buy this you won’t regret it. If you don’t care for the rear speakers the Q80 sounded pretty awesome as well.

I purchased the q80 at first and was really impressed with the sound. I figured if the q80 sounded this good without the rear speakers what would it sound like with them. Well q90 with the rear speakers is amazing. They add another level of sounds that you didnt know were there. Just to make one thing clear the rear speakers are for ambient sounds you will not hear dialogue out of them. Unless the movie sends a voice from the back. Example is haunting of hill house episode 6 when the bent neck lady appears in the side room the voice only comes out of the left rear channel. Talk about a jump scare. Dolby atmos at its finest. The subwoofer is much better then last years model seems to be much tighter and will rumble your walls when you turn this baby up. If you have a small room you will be listening to this on 10-15 volume and it is loud this thing goes to 100. Ok time for a negative it has a problem switching audio from the bars hdmi ports back to the TV. So my DVD player and my xbox are plugged into the soundbar when I switch back to the TV it wont play sound I have to shut the bar off then back on. This seems to be a issue for awhile with Samsung you pay alot of money for this set and it was a issue on last years set come on Samsung. Also the bar sits a little high why is tx.9
here no ir blaster with this system. Ok back to the good stuff if you like playing music this bar sounds good Harmon did their job on this thing. Well in closing I do recommend this to anyone that wants a home theater quality without a million speakers and wires everywhere.

It’s a fantastic sounding soundbar but I’m thinking of returning it for something else. I have it paired through hdmi arc with my Samsung q70. When working it sounds fantastic. First problem I encountered was during setup it wouldn’t pair with the SmartThings app with the firmware installed out of the box. Support had no solution other than we’ll submit a ticket with the developers. Then I saw on a YouTube video how to install the latest firmware with a usb drive connected to the port underneath the soundbar. Firmware updated perfectly and then it was able to pair with SmartThings app. However now since this latest firmware update the subwoofer and rear speaker won’t connect when the soundbar is powered on. I have to power cycle the sub and rears every time I turn the soundbar on which is extremely disappointing. Debating on returning for the cheaper Vizio Dolby Atmos soundbar.

Thank you for your review of this Samsung HW-Q90R Soundbar. I am very sorry to hear that you are having issues with the subwoofer and rear speakers disconnecting.
To connect the subwoofer and rear speakers to main Soundbar: 1. Turn on the Soundbar. 2. Press and hold ID SET button located on the rear of the subwoofer and surround speakers for about 6 seconds. • The LINK indicators at the rear of each speaker will flash blue. 3. Press and hold the Up button on the remote control for about 6 seconds. • An ID SET message appears on the display of the Soundbar for a moment, and then disappears. • The Soundbar will automatically power on. • The LINK indicators will light solid blue when the connection is made.
To improve the wireless speaker connection, update the Soundbar to the latest version (1008.0 or later). Be sure to perform Step 2) in the Upgrade Guide. Follow the link here: https://www.samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/2019-harmon-kardon-soundbar-w-dolby-atmos-hw-q90r

I love the sound but I had to hook everything up through the HDMI pots because if I used the ARC port to my TV the sound was not in sync. I know that can be adjusted but it is impossible to get right.
Unfortunately one of the HDMI ports doesn't work properly so I had to run an HDMI splitter to make everything work. So all in all it was an annoying set up and I am not thrilled the one HDMI port doesn't work but the sound quality is great so I am happy.

If you're debating between this, Sonos, or Bose, I'll give my opinion. Sonos, slightly more expensive and has slightly stronger base. Sonos does not have atmos. I've owned Bose for years, owned multiple different models. You pay for the name, but all around great quality. The high end expensive Bose systems give you what you pay for. The cheaper ones, you pay for the marketing. This Samsung system hits hard if you want it to and can tone it down if you dont. Crisp, clean, all around great system. Only caveat- make sure and update the system software before using it. Get the system firing on all cylinders and you wont be disappointed.

I was looking for best sound bar that was compatible with my new Q9 Samsung TV. My Bose system wasn’t compatible I learned over a short period of time. The sales rep told me about this Samsung and demonstrated it in the store. It sounded great then and in my home it sounds like I’m in a movie theater. Well worth the money and I love cranking up the volume to watch a great action movie. I didn’t realize the sounds I was missing on my other sound bar compared to the Samsung. Easy to install. I pugged it in and the TV instantly recognized it and I didn’t have to make any adjustments. I did purchase the rear speakers as well and I’m so glad I did. This sound bar and rear speakers system is awesome!
