Customers are saying

Customers have good things to say about the 860 EVO 250GB Internal SATA 2.5" Solid State Drive's performance, ease of use, and fast boot times. Many appreciate its reasonable price and straightforward installation. While some mention the drive's capacity as relatively small, the positive feedback on speed and ease of use outweighs this concern. The overall experience is overwhelmingly positive, with users highlighting the improved performance compared to traditional hard drives.

SSD made it four months before failing. BB Geek Squad replaced it at no cost. Had to reload software. BB good, Samsung SSD not so good.

My MacBook didn’t recognize this hard drive, my 2.5 enclosure didn’t either, I couldn’t even format it, maybe was defective! I returned and got the crucial mx500 500gb for $70

I guess this is a good hard drive. I am not tech savvy so I can only say that it works, it’s quiet and I don’t get the upgrade notification any longer.

    UDMA CRC errors, random freezes

As soon as I began using this drive, I got random freezes while doing anything. The SMART data shows "UDMA CRC" errors occurring whenever I experience the freeze. I replaced my SATA cable, moved it to a different SATA port, different power plug, etc. Nothing made any difference. I attempted to contact Samsung tech support, but they were completely useless. After much frustration and searching, I finally found out that this drive has a firmware bug that prevents it from working with an AMD SB950 SATA controller. I returned it for a refund. Never buying Samsung SSDs again, which is a shame, because their past products have all been excellent. Kudos to Best Buy for accepting my return without any hassle.

      computerman:

Thank you for purchasing the Samsung 860 EVO SATA III SSD and for your review. I am sorry to hear that you are not completely happy with performance speeds. Your 250GB drive was engineered to deliver speeds of up to 550MB/s Seq. Read and 520MB/s Seq. Write.

If you haven't done so already, you may want to use Samsung Magician to run Performance Optimization, ensure that your motherboard supports SATA III interface, check that all performance related settings are set correctly (cached enabled, AHCI enabled), and be sure you have the latest version of the driver.

As there are various factors that could affect speed, I would encourage you to call Samsung Customer Support if you need further assistance to troubleshoot your issue.

Upgraded my Dell XPS 8920 which had a traditional 1TB HDD to this 860 EVO. Benchmarked at 521 MBps read, 401 MBps write, Random 4k average 49.7 MBps, and Deep Queue 4k average at 232 MBps (according to UserBenchmark). Practically speaking, it is miles ahead of any old HDD and I noticed immediately upon rebooting. Everything from booting, Chrome, and every other application starts considerably faster. Highly recommended.

Perfect for the old 2006 iMac...

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I installed this Samsung 860 Evo 250GB SSD in a late 2006 20" iMac, I had to use the Fenlink SSD Mounting Bracket Converter for Samsung SSD to make it work, bought on Amazon, BB does not carry such an adapter that I could find. The Samsung SSD brought our old iMac back to life. If you have one of these older Macs, you will need a copy of the OS on a DVD to make all of this work, unless you are cloning the old HDD that came out of the machine. I wanted to do a clean install, so a copy of Snow Leopard was purchased from Apple, this is required to do a clean install on these older Macs. The new Samsung 860 Evo works as advertised, booted right up with no issues. I have one in my 2017 21" iMac and it works like a champ. Highly recommend.
