The new Samsung Galaxy Watch is the replacement for the Gear S3, introduced in late 2016. It comes in two models based on screen size: 46mm or 42mm for smaller wrists. The 46mm watch is available in a silver trim with a black onyx band, while the 42mm version is available in midnight black or rose gold. The 46mm screen size is 1.3” while the 42mm watch has a 1.2” screen. This watch adds some new extras that you may want to consider for upgrading. Samsung has pioneered the rotating bezel with previous models as well as the Galaxy Watch. This bezel makes changing to other settings and functions a real pleasure. No more going to many submenus to find what you want to do. One of the best features is its larger battery that provides a longer time period between charges. Samsung advertises that the battery will last up to 4 days before charging. From my experience, it was closer to 2-3 days. Of course, that will vary according to personal choices such as whether you leave the display on or go to ambient mode. Keep in mind that the 42mm watch has a smaller battery, so you cannot necessarily count on up to 4 days. Samsung has added several apps you may want to add to this watch. Google Maps and YouTube are two of the apps that can be added. But there needs to be more to make this watch more functional. You also have the option of making and answering calls on this watch as long as your phone is nearby. The “Dick Tracy” function of making calls on your watch is now a reality! If fitness is your thing, the Galaxy Watch offers monitoring of your calories, heart rate, steps taken and more. It even monitors your sleep patterns to measure REM sleep. This watch can monitor close to 40 activities no matter your choice of sport. This watch runs on Tizen 4.0 and offers many watchfaces to choose from. In fact, Tizen has more watchfaces than even Android Wear. Whether you want a standard clock face or a digital one, you are likely to find one that pleases you. The Galaxy Watch is compatible with both Android and iOS devices. Be advised that I only used it with an Android phone and it worked perfectly. Setup was very easy as long as you download the Galaxy Wearable app. From this app on your phone, you can select watchfaces and use Bluetooth to connect to your watch. One of the best features of this watch is that it is easy to replace watch bands. The 46mm watch uses a standard 22m band, while the 42mm watch uses 20mm ones. Check online and you will find leather, stainless steel, nylon, rubber or silicon bands to perfectly match the Galaxy Watch. These watches use a quick-release tab that makes it easy to swap bands. For $350 I would have preferred this watch with a metal stainless band. But for $30 or less I can have the band that Samsung failed to include. Unfortunately, the Galaxy Watch is not perfect and does have some drawbacks. The primary complaint is with Bixby, Samsung’s voice-activated assistant. In needs further updates to make it as flexible as Siri or Alexa! One of Samsung’s selling points is the sleep monitoring function noted above. But be advised that if you leave the watch on the charger overnight, you can’t track your sleep patterns. The last complaint is that Samsung needs to add even more apps to make this watch more functional. The Galaxy Watch offers many new features that makes this watch attractive. However, if you own a Gear S3 this watch is an enhancement to the Samsung line—not a dramatic game-changer! But if you are new to smartwatches, the Samsung Galaxy Watch is one to seriously consider.

    Good Smartwatch with Some Shortcomings

Overall I’ve been very happy with the Galaxy Watch. It’s solidly built and has a great interface. It also has excellent fitness tracking built-in. Although it’s compatible with most Android phones, it feels like you need a Galaxy phone to really take full advantage of it. I’m a big fan of the design of this watch. It’s got a classic look that doesn’t scream smartwatch or fitness tracker. The 42mm model isn’t terribly bulky and fits my wrist well - I’m a taller guy and was worried the smaller model might look strange on my wrist. I’ve had a few minor brushes and knocks wearing this on my wrist and so far the watch has held up very well. The screen sits below the bezel, which helps to keep it from scratching, and the rotating ring and the buttons are both very solid and clicky. I wasn’t that happy with the silicone wristband that comes with the watch; I could never quite get the right fit and it always seemed like it was either too tight or too loose. Fortunately, any 20mm watch band will work with the Galaxy Watch and I was able to find another one that I’m very happy with. There was a small learning curve for me to navigate the interface of the watch, but once I got it everything felt very natural. The entire outside bezel acts as a scroll wheel and it makes it really easy to navigate the smaller screen. The screen is also bright and sharp and I’ve seen no noticeable stutters in performance while using the watch. The battery life is excellent; I’ve got through the end of each day with 50+% battery left. The onboard apps are all very solid, especially Samsung Health. All the basics are there including phone, calendar, alarms, music, etc. How much you want to interact with those things on such a small screen is up to you, but Samsung does a good job of laying them out. One thing that I found while using this with my Pixel 2 was that I could get alerts and respond to text messages from the watch, but there was no dedicated messages app available to me on the watch. It seems like this is probably due to the fact that I’m not using Samsung’s text message app, but it’s odd because the phone and calendar app do a fine job of accessing my contacts and appointments, so I’m not sure why the onboard messages app can’t access my texts. It’s good that the basics are there because app support is limited; outside of some fitness oriented stuff I didn’t see a lot of true 3rd party apps in the app store. Samsung Pay is also onboard and that works well, though without a fingerprint reader or face scanner to authenticate you’re left to plug in a pin number on the watch before it’s activated. It works well, but it doesn’t feel as natural to use as just pulling my phone out of my pocket and holding it up to the reader. My biggest problem with the Galaxy Watch is Bixby, the built-in assistant. It’s just trash and is vastly inferior to anything from Google, Apple, or Microsoft. It misunderstands me about 50% of the time, often the wake command does not work, and the voice is very robotic. I know Samsung has a lot invested in Bixby, which give me hope that it might get better over time, but it’s got a long way to go. Overall I’m happy with everything this watch has to offer and it’s the one I wear every day now. I think it’s a great choice for anyone with an Android phone, Galaxy or not. If you have an iPhone this is a no-go; it’s technically compatible, but it’s severely limited by iOS restrictions.

The watch is very cute but after the 1st day it wouldn’t charge, after researching a little it’s a common problem and the work around is plugging the usb to the charger to a laptop. Samusung had no response but return it and get a new one or once the store warranty was up to pay to ship it to them for repairs with a 11 business day timeframe to be without my watch. I was kinda disappointed because I love my gear s3 && haven’t had any problems with it i just wish it was gold

I’ve been using the Samsung Galaxy 42mm smartwatch for a few weeks now. I’m really enjoying it a lot for many reasons. There are many customizations you can add for watch faces and notification alerts. The watch pairs perfectly with my Samsung S9 Android phone. My phone normally lives in my front trouser pocket at all times, which means I need to pull out the phone many times throughout the day to see who is pinging me. But now I can simply flick my left wrist to see what my phone is making a fuss about and either choose to investigate further by pulling out my phone or ignoring the alert. So in effect, this is saving me from carpal tunnel syndrome of constantly pulling out the phone out of my pocket every time it buzzes me. Alternately, I can simply respond to say a text message through the watch by replying back with a simple smiley face emoji or a pre-set saved message such as “can’t talk now, will call you later” or whatever. Also cool is the ability to speak a voice message reply through my watch and send it by text as an audio file…very convenient! Again, this saves me from having to pull out my phone out of my trouser pocket yet again another time lol. I can also view my email messages too through my watch, plus see who is calling me and choose to answer the call via the watch if I want to. Total Dick Tracy action! Granted, my particular Galaxy watch cannot make calls (only receive calls) because I don’t want to pay a monthly subscription for the LTE version, it’s still a cool feature to be able to answer calls via the watch. Besides getting instant alerts via the watch, the other major reason for getting a smartwatch is to have customized watch faces with LARGE font sizes so I can easily read the time, day, date and other info without putting on reading glasses. This is why I’m retiring my various collection of cool multifunction Citizen Ecodrive analog watches, because I can no longer read the small font sizes for day and date info, etc. I now have installed many dozens of free watch faces, the one I like in particular is called “Iris26” because of its large font sizes and lots of useful info on the screen such as steps walked, heart beat rate, battery life, etc. The rotating bezel is a really cool feature for navigation/scrolling in addition to the touch screen. The other week, a coworker with an Apple watch was amazed that I can watch movies via a Youtube-like app..haha! My significant other with her Fitbit Versa was utterly jealous of the many features of my Galaxy watch. Battery life is quite excellent. I leave the house at 6:30am with my watch at 100% battery life, it’s usually around 85% battery life about 1:00pm. I really like the black on black design of this watch, I much prefer all black versus the silver tone on the 46mm model. Plus the 42mm version fits my wrist better. The silicon wristband is quite comfortable on my wrist, plus I hardly feel the weight of the watch on my wrist. The screen is very readable even in direct sunlight and is very responsive by touch. I like the Samsung Health app on the watch paired to my S9 phone. I am not a die-hard athlete by any stretch, so all I really need is a casual health tracker, so this Galaxy watch suits me well. As others have pointed out, Bixby is virtually useless. I dislike Bixby on my Samsung phone and it’s equally useless on my Samsung watch. I asked Bixby on the watch how far is the earth from the moon (ala the TV commercial), and Bixby got confused and gave the usual “Please check it on device” display message. The other watch app I use often is the alarm which I have set to ring and vibrate every week day Monday through Friday at 5:30am, but off on the weekends. Very useful! The alarm function works perfectly even when I set the watch on “Goodnight” mode before going to bed. All in all, I’m very satisfied with this Galaxy watch, it now deserves a spot on my left wrist!

Still One of the Best Watches to Purchase!

This is a fantastic watch. Even 4 years later, it performs as well as some of the newer watches. I am still able to use Samsung Pay in the stores or with Omni, to get on the bus or train, and I can still use it to advance PowerPoint or Google Slides during a presentation. The S.O.S. function allows a recording of 5 seconds of sound in addition to alerting your pre-chosen recipients with a pre-written message and location/co-ordinates, and it can be connected to WiFi, in addition to Bluetooth on your mobile phone. This is useful for using the function, "Find My Phone" if you have misplaced it. Using the WiFi allows the function to go beyond the 30 ft. limit of the Bluetooth range. I left my phone on another floor at my job and was able to use the "Find My Phone" function, because it switch from Bluetooth to WiFi, once it was out of range. Unfortunately, it can only make calls if it is within close range of your phone, but that's what the newer phones are for. This one doesn't have it's own number and cannot make phone calls on it's own. I'm not worried about having that function. Of course it has alarms and health and wellness functions as well.

Pros: -Attractive Design -Big Screen -Multipurpose- If you're health conscious, there are settings for that. If you are a workaholic, there are settings for that. There are multiple settings to use making it a one watch fits all type of item. -Able to make phone calls and send text messages...most of the time. -Emails are able to be accessed as well and responded to. -Very cool watch face options. I got one that looks like the status module from the Fallout video games with Pip Boy and everything. I took a picture of it below. Cons: -It seems that the connectivity affects my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 5. Not the newest phone on the shelf but high functioning. Connecting to the watch has managed to slow down the wireless connection on my phone. In fact, I have to turn my wifi off in order to download 1 page documents or a webpage. This really doesn't affect me that much since I haven't been using my phone a whole lot lately but I know that things will pick up and I will be in trouble. I would like to try it on a newer phone to see how well it functions then. I'm not totally discouraged by this but I think this is a pretty big con. -If you are not used to wearing a watch, this will take some getting used to. I am a female that used to wear sports watches growing up. It is bigger than what I was used to but not too unreasonable. If I had the option, I'd probably get the smaller size for comfort. Because my wrist is so small, I had my boyfriend try it on to see how it would fit a larger wrist. It fit much better and seemed more comfortable so I can see how under normal circumstances it would probably be just fine. -I cannot accept phone calls outside of a certain range from my phone with the watch. I'm not talking leaving the phone at home, out for a walk kind of range. I mean that if I left my phone in my living room and walked to the bedroom, the call is dropped. Could just be a glitch but it was a little frustrating. Also could have to do with the phone I'm using, maybe with a brand new phone it would not do that. All in all, I think the watch is cool. It has definitely turned some heads when I've used Samsung Pay at the grocery store or taken a call with it. I think if you have a new phone and are into new technology, this could be right up your alley.

This is my second smartwatch, my other is a Gear S3 Frontier. I like them both a lot, but prefer the smaller size (42mm) of the rose gold Galaxy Watch. I'm a guy, and I feel the rose gold watch looks great on men or women, although I did replace the supplied beige band with some darker ones. The Galaxy watch is a ton of fun to use. Thousands of great watch faces are available for download. It will record your steps, and track a large number of types of workouts. I use it to track my walks and bike rides, and it does a great job. It will also report your local weather, and provide a variety of notifications from your phone. You can make and receive phone calls with the watch and it works great for that.

Most importantly, the watch is well build and so is the strap. Samsung's really done a great job with the bezel design and feature. Overall, the watch is very simple to use and the battery life is way better than what I had expected. I can go for 3 days without having to recharge my battery. The fitness and health tracking features are great. I haven't actually tested or compared the accuracy of the tracker but I'll trust the technology on my wrist for the time being as I'm not all crazy about tracking every breath I take. If you're looking for a smartwatch that has a slick design and packed with lots of features, I would highly recommend this to anyone.

My old Timex died, so I needed a new watch anyway. I had been waiting for the new Samsung because I felt that the previous model looked too large on me. This one is the 42mm size and it looks and feels just right. It does everything that I wanted, including seeing texts and emails, alarms, and tracking steps and heart rate. This is an excellent watch, in appearance and functionality. I am upgrading from a s2 classic to this version and I couldn't be more pleased. I see people giving low reviews because of what they think the watch doesn't do...This watch does everything it claims, but you have to go to settings on the app on your phone and watch and do a little tweaking. This is a mini computer on your wrist. I'm sorry but if you are not computer savvy this is not the watch for you.

Been with LG watches since Wear OS came out. Bought this after the LG Watch W7 debacle. Very nice. Paired great with my Pixel 3, then decided to accessorize with a Note 9. After years of avoiding Apple and Samsung, I'm all in with the good guys. Light, handsome but nondescript, battery life amazing, easy to read, easy to navigate. Nice job Samsung, sorry I doubted you.

This is a really great looking watch. I wear it almost everyday and most days I can get all the way through until pretty much the next day with the battery life. I've only had it for about a month so we'll have to see how the battery lasts after a lot of use but so far it's been very good. The watch itself works as advertised it is able to give me all my notifications without issue and I can have phone conversations through it if I need to. All in all
