They appreciate the convenience of Samsung Pay, fitness tracking capabilities, and the wide range of watch faces and customization options. Is S3 The Magic Number?

While the Gear S wasn’t Samsung’s first smartwatch, it was the first to bear the ‘S’ moniker, indicating Samsung had learnt enough from their Gear/2/2 Neo/X/Live/Fit watches to launch a truly flagship line. So the third version of a line fit to bear the ‘S’ name? This should be special. The key evolution with the S3 is the divergence of style. The Frontier and Classic are two different styles, released to broaden the watch’s appeal. The rotating bezel returns is a superb control method that absolutely complements the touch screen. While the specifications don’t stray too far from the standards set with the S2, it’s unsurprising to see the RAM bumped up (512 to 768MB), as well as the battery (250 to 380 mAh). Fans will be pleased to see NFC and waterproofing return, while GPS is added as standard. For running and hiking, the Gear S3 is an asset, providing superb levels of detail with audible updates as you move. For daily use, checking texts or emails is simple, while answering your phone from your wrist is (surprisingly) useful. My only criticism is that I’ve been looking at this from the perspective of a thick-wristed male; and while the Gear S3 comes with a smaller band for those with thinner wrists, I can’t help but feel my fiance couldn’t wear this and look normal. I know boyfriend sweaters are a thing, but boyfriend watches? I’m not sure. So is the S3 the moment where the Gear S line has matured? I absolutely believe so. Samsung have released a powerful, fantastic-looking watch that looks great on your wrist whether you’re going for a 3-mile hike or a 3-course meal. It is clear Samsung have an absolute winner on their hands… or should that be wrist?

I got this after my Gear 2 Neo died (I also recommend the Geek Squad Protection Plan) and am extremely satisfied with the new watch. It looks like a real watch and with a variety of watch faces this watch can look rugged and sporty to classy and everything in between. It has good battery life and does support Samsung Pay. While the app selection is not stellar, it has the basics covered well. Most of the apps just sit in storage and are rarely used anyway. It is great for checking and responding to text messages, calls, and checking weather and health information. It automatically tracks your sleep and works seamlessly with by Galaxy S8+. S Voice doesn't work that well, but will probably be replaced by Bixby by a future update.

I purchased this watch because I liked that it looks like a real watch and not a smart watch. The watch is large and thick so it is difficult to get under my sleeve cuffs when I am wearing dress shirts. The dark metal finish is very nice and the band is made of a dense rubber that feels solid. I plan on purchasing additional bands for more dressy occasions when I want to wear the watch. I use the watch mainly to see incoming texts, phone calls, and emails without having to wear my phone on a belt holster. It is nice not having the phone on my hip all day. The watch communicates via bluetooth so the range is typical of other bluetooth devices, maybe 30 to 50 feet depending on the density of the walls. I pair the watch with a Samsung Galaxy S6. I can make or receive phone calls clearly through the watch. People talking to me say that my voice is nice and clear. I can view texts easily and respond via quick responses, typing, or voice typing. Typing is cumbersome on the small screen so I usually dictate my text messages or use quick responses that I have set up. My main complaint is that there are not many apps in the Samsung store. I use the Samsung fitness app (preloaded on watch) which tracks steps, calories burned, heart rate etc. I also downloaded the Tennis Traq app to track my shots when I play tennis. This is kind of fun but this tennis app drains the battery very rapidly. Otherwise I can get 2 to 3 days of use before I have to recharge the watch. I would estimate that the watch charges quickly back to 100% in about 2 hours on a very convenient wireless charging base. When I looked through the Samsung Gear app store, I did not see any interesting or useful apps. There are mainly hundreds of apps for changing the watch face. However, the watch looks great and serves nicely as a convenient way to keep up with my incoming calls and messages without having to obtrusively pull out my phone. If that is mainly what you need I would strongly encourage you to buy this product.

Samsung did a pretty good job with the S3. The name for starters, It is gear you wear on your wrist. It does so much more then tell time. Like they say, a ‘smart watch” It’s very durable, I have smacked it on cabinets, desks and doors still no scratches. The speaker is decent considering it’s size. The bezel control, touch screen and buttons never a problem. I changed my band over to the stainless almost immediately so can’t speak for the rubber one. The battery does not last as long if you leave the watch screen on all the time, they say that in the manual. It’s still lasts a couple of days. Usually about double that if I leave the screen off or on auto. I like it a lot, so does my son, he got one for his birthday.

Got this watch and so glad I did. Paired with the Note 8 and was easy to set up. Samsung pay rocks. Funny watching cashiers saying that don't work here. And bam. Purchases paid for. Battery last well too.

This is my 1st smartwatch. I was hesitant to get one but finally broke down and got the S3 frontier. Part of my decision to get it was because i have a samsung phone. I love it! The battery life is completely dependant on how you use it,what apps you run, and the watchface you use. The 1st few days it lasted about 24 hrs. Now that I'm not playing with it all day, I'm getting 48+ hrs and that's leaving it turned on and connected to my phone overnight. I find something new it will do every day and I've bearly scratched the surface. I love being able to see caller i.d. , text messages, weather, and step counter without picking up my phone. It's a little pricey but worth the money in my opinion.

One of the better smart watches I've had

I've had every model of the gear, since the very first Galaxy Gear, and this one is fantastic. The look of the watch is terrific. Ditching the squared look of the older designs, and sporting a classic looking bezel, this is the first smart watch that'd I'd say perfectly captures the look and essence of a real watch. It's very lightweight and durable. Houses a wide variety of built in watch faces, but also very customizable with custom watch face apps such as watchmaker, or facer. Controlling the watch via the bezel is extremely easy and the voice commands work very well. If I had to say anything negative, it's that the plastic on the bezel is very prone to scratching/scuffing so it needs to be buffed every so often. However the build quality is very strong and has already taken a beating. It'd be nice if there was a way to charge it via micro usb in addition to the magnetic dock, just in case you go out of town without your charger, but that's just being nitpicky. All in all a fabulous device that works with all Android models.

My wife got me this watch for my birthday a year ago and I have been very pleased with it. I liked that the watch looked like actual watches I had previously owned. It has worked consistently great with my Samsung phones over the past year and has been very reliable. It still lasts two days easily on a charge. I really enjoy the dial that allows you to easily and subtly check your notifications. It's everything I want in a smart watch.

I was torn over buying the standalone 4g version or Bluetooth. I finally went with Bluetooth and saved $50 plus got a $100 gift card! Normally most people have there phone with them 90% of the time, so no need to pay monthly fee to a carrier just for those one or two times that it would come in handy. Excellent quality with lots of cool features. If anyone is on the fence about purchasing this watch, it's definitely worth it. Smooth operation, long battery life, and perfect size for a man's smart watch. And to top it all off a wireless charging system takes the cake. And don't forget to use samsung pay. Great to leave the wallet behind...Thanks Samsung!!!

This is by the best smart watch I've owned by far. I have owned 6 previously, the Samsung Gear Frontier being the most recent. The watch is large but it packs lots of features and functionality. The best for me so far are HR monitor and Samsung Pay. I changed the band to a leather one, and feel while wearing the watch improved dramatically as well as the looks. I'm really happy with this watch, it charges fast, holds a charge a for a respectable time period. Navigation through the watch menus and features is a breeze. I highly recommend this watch to anyone with a Samsung phone and that is okay with large but feature rich smart watch.

Yes I was VERY hesitant to buy this watch as I'm a women! Once I went to the store and tried on the frontier I fell in love! The face size is the same as an oversize MK watch. It's actually a lot more comfortable then my MK watchas. I have a note 8 and this paired up super easily. The watch it self is clear and easy to use the speaker is great and it works very well. I ordered a white strap for it which makes it look nicer. Yes I wish Samsung had made it just a BIT smaller but it's still a great functional watch!

I purchased the Gear S3 Frontier a few months back when my 1st gen Moto 360 no longer worked. I was worried moving from Android Wear to Tizen. But since I have a Samsung phone, I figured why not give it a try. I like the design of the watch. At the time, I was new the having a watch that can turn. And after having it for a few months, I can see why many manufacturers are adopting it. It's great! The only downside is that Tizen doesn't offer as many apps as Android Wear. But if you're pretty basic and only need the core apps, then this may not be a problem for you. Also, battery life is great! Aside from this, I would still recommend this.

Well, let me start by saying I’m an Apple product fan and I still do. I bought this watch mainly for the style but I was impressed with the functionality paired with my iPhone X. It is fast as my Apple Watch 3 gps+cellular. I also paired it too with my galaxy s8 and I’m also impressed. Didn’t see much difference in speed and functionality but some of the reviews said it disconnects every now and then from their iPhone, which I didn’t experience. I hope this help people that are undecided. I’m lucky to enough to have iOS, Android and Samsung(Tizen) ecosystem and I’m happy with their competition because it only benefits us consumers.

This watch has so many options, it would be easier to read the full description. But setup and connection to my S8 was easy and flawless. Great battery life even with continued use. I charge it about every 3rd day. It's great to see your emails and texts come through without grabbing your phone. Works great with Samsung Health and helps to track your activities. Being able to change the watch face is cool and easy.

    Rugged yet Sexy

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The Gear S3 is the leading edge of innovative technology, and with the Gear S3 they did not hold back with packing a massive amount of technology into this compact device. Everything from a GPS antenna to an internal speaker with built in microphone for making phone calls and anything needing audible feedback. The screen is super bright, and being able to view the photos that are received in text messages without opening your cell phone is a super nice feature. The battery, although it does take a bit longer to charge than its predecessor, does last over 50% longer than the Gear S2. If you want a way to monitor just how well your sleep habits are, then this is the device to get. It automatically monitors your sleep time with 3 degrees of rest as shown in the attached photo. But the battery does take longer to charge, which is not an issue for most people who do not wear their watch to bed like I do. I enjoy the ability to have the built in alarm function to wake me in the mornings by vibration. With the Gear S3 addition of a built in speaker, I also have the option to turn on a speaker when the alarm rings or it is adjustable to have one or the other used. Samsung stepped it up a bit to include their MST – Magnetic Secure Transmission – alongside NFC, which others use for mobile type payments. The MST allows for a more secure form of payment to keep your Debit/Credit card isolated from others when using it. I have been able to utilize MST at most locations, with the exception of gas pumps (but I can pre-pay to keep information secure). When others see me using my watch, the first reaction I get is " We don't offer A**** Pay" and of course my response is always, " Good, because I would try it with that device", then when the transaction goes through, their eyes get big and say "Wow, how did you do that? I didn't know we had that capability here". This usually leads into a good conversation about how it works with the magnetic card reader instead of a MFC reader. Then I get the deer in headlight look, and I know I lost them. The weight of the Frontier had me concerned before I received it. I have been wearing the Gear S2 for some time and was really used to not realizing it was there. After I opened the box and seen that it was actually bigger then the predecessor, my concerns got higher, that is until I put it on. Once I did that I realized that this this is legit. It is rugged yet sexy, powerful yet simple to use, and most importantly it does not feel like wearing a toy watch. This thing is the real deal. Feels better than any watch I have worn before, and after a few days, I cannot tell the difference in it. Which is the way a watch should feel when you are wearing it. I do not think it will fall apart if I bump it up against something. Which brings me to the Corning® Gorilla® Glass SR+. Not having to worry about a scratch if you do bump it up against something is a wonderful feeling when you are wearing a quality watch. And the Frontier is built with Quality in mind. In the age of smart phones, some people do not have a need to wear a watch, when they can easily just check their phone for the time, but this is way more than just a time keeper, it is a personal computer on your wrist, that’s ready to assist you when you are ready.

I've used many different smart watches and fitness trackers. So far they never seem to be the best of both worlds. Smart watches seem to have fitness tracking added to them but don't do that very well. Fitness trackers that have smart watch functions don't seem to do that very well. The Gear S3 isn't perfect but so far seems to be the best of the smart watches with fitness functions. I don't do any running but I do a lot of weight lifting so I need a device that tracks heart rate to get a good gauge of calories burned during my workouts. The S3 does this pretty well. Unfortunately there isn't a "weightlifting" program included in the watch and if you use the default "dynamic workout" setting it doesn't measure heart rate for some reason. So I set the watch on "cycling" when I'm working out. Kind of strange but it works for me. The watch has a nice big face that makes reading texts and other notifications easy. It is heavier and larger than the S2 but for some reason doesn't bother me on the wrist like the S2 did. I can wear it all day and sleep with it to use the alarm feature without many issues. So far the battery life is much better than the S2. I could barely get a day's use out of the S2 but with the S3 a whole day's use including a workout while playing music from the watch will drain my batter about 30%. Not bad at all. I believe I could go about 2 full days on a single charge. But what I find myself doing is getting up in the morning, putting the watch on the charger and by the time I'm done getting ready for work it's back up to 100%. Samsung Pay works well also but to use that feature you have to set an unlock code for the screen and I didn't want to bother with that every time I wanted to use the watch so I just leave it off. About the only thing that annoys me about the watch is that Samsung says that it is water resistant yet they tell you not to wear it in the shower. I guess there's an issue with steam maybe? Bottom line is that the S3 looks to be the smart watch that I will stick with for a while.
