Another great home theater product from Samsung hits the shelves. Every year the products get better and better by adding the latest technology to the new models. Samsung has teamed up with Harman Kardon to crank out a top notch soundbar with a wireless subwoofer. This unit supports 4K and HDR and has all the latest sound goodness of Dolby Atmos. Setup was super easy, especially if you have a TV that supports an HDMI ARC connection. HDMI ARC, High Definition Multimedia Interface Audio Return Channel, allows back and forth signals between your TV and the soundbar. It allows you to use one remote to control both devices. If you don’t have a TV that supports ARC you can connect an optical cable or just use a HDMI output. There are two HDMI input ports and one HDMI output (ARC enabled). The wireless 8” subwoofer was easy to pair with the soundbar right out of the box but there are steps in the instructions if you aren’t so lucky. Based upon my experience you most likely won’t need to go through any added steps. Connectivity is a big deal as it not only can be hardwired with cables but also supports WIFI and Bluetooth connections. Home assistants are becoming the big rage whether it be Siri, Alexa, Cortana, Bixby or Google. Being Alexa and Samsung’s own Bixby enabled allows you hands free control of your soundbar. I’m not big on home assistants but it’s good to know the feature is there if I want or need it. The sound is amazing whether watching a movie, console gaming or streaming music from my Android phone (Samsung Note 9 by the way). The bar has 13 speakers, 2 aiming up and 2 aiming to the sides, which totally immerses you with sound. I do think I am going to pick up the optional wireless speakers to pair with the soundbar so I can take advantage of the 5.1 surround sound. I haven’t tried this yet but through the WIFI they advertise that you can network additional speakers to give you control of music throughout your house, like another major brand. That will be the first thing I try once I pick up the optional wireless speakers. It is BIG. I have a 55" HDTV on a TV stand sized for the TV and the soundbar sticks over about 4" on each side... looks like I need to go wall mount or get a bigger TV stand! The system does seem pricey to me but I guess for the features it offers it’s worth the money. Toss in the optional speakers (about $180 more) you are looking at upwards of $1250 for a system but the soundbar and subwoofer are more than a capable pairing with your TV. If you are on a tight budget there are other options available but if you have the funds to spare you can't go wrong with this setup.

This is the second Samsung soundbar I have, this one is almost double the size of the other one. It's 4 feet wide, 5 1/2 inches deep and 3 inches tall. Make sure you have room for it in your entertainment center, or you can mount it on the wall (it comes with the hardware for that). Setup was easy and it came with one HDMI cable. One of the main things I like is it has 2 HDMI inputs, as well as an optical port and Bluetooth connectivity. I usually have my DVR hooked up to one HDMI port and a streaming box hooked up to the other. My old soundbar only has one HDMI port, so I have to switch them out when I want to use the other device. I'm surprised so few soundbars have more than one HDMI port. The sound is amazing, even at low volumes. The subwoofer kicks in when there's sound or music in it's range. One thing I don't like is the remote. It's mostly okay, but the volume control is a single button which rocks forward and backward to adjust the volume. Or you can push down on it to mute the soundbar. Several times when trying to adjust the volume, I muted it accidentally. Luckily the remote for my other Samsung soundbar also works for this one and I like it better.

This soundbar is an impressive feat, but, as with previous surround sound bars I’ve tried, doesn’t quite hit the mark for me. There’s a lot here to like. Whether through HDMI or Bluetooth, connection and setup is a breeze. Getting the wireless subwoofer to talk to the soundbar is simply a matter of powering them up in the correct sequence. You can use this not just for your home theater system, but also to play music from your phone or tablet. The design is sleek and contemporary, and will fit unobtrusively into your room. The sound with Dolby Atmos video sources is fantastic – clear and smooth, with excellent front channel sound delineation. The unit is designed for a large TV, meaning the unit is about 4’ across. This means plenty of sound separation by virtue of physical space, without the need for electronic wizardry. There’s more than enough volume for large rooms. The automatic dialog enhancement works extremely well, allowing characters to be heard over the soundtrack and sound effects. But, there are a couple of downsides. When playing pure music sources, it appears the same dialogue enhancement may be kicking in; instrumental music is very clear, but vocals frequently sound too loud, and sound that way inconsistently across the range of the human voice. Some tweaking of settings mitigated this, but then the movie dialogue didn’t stick out as much. The ability set the soundbar for different channels may be appreciated here. For me, the biggest drawback is the surround sound psychoacoustic trick. For me, it simply doesn’t work. Comparing it to my 7.2 Denon/Mirage system, the difference was quite stark. Bottom line; if you watch a lot of video content but aren’t counting on this for music, it sounds great. If the electronic surround sound tricks work for you, then you will certainly be happy. If you are primarily a music fan or your brain isn’t fooled, there's simply no substitute for separate speaker enclosures.

    Excellent sound/Easy Setup

I would rate this product excellent but interface was not perfect with Sony x9000f TV. Sounds amazing and compared to Sony 9000f 2.1 soundbar the sound is much richer and complete with its 13 speakers. The interface with Sony TV is not perfect, the volume and setting do not show on TV all settings must be viewed from soundbar. This is not to bad because once you set soundbar there's no need to play around with the setting anymore. Hooking up with hdmi arc allows you to use your Sony TV remote for volume and soundbar turns off when you turn off TV. I payed $999.00 at Bestbuy for the Samsung HW-Q80 soundbar and for the sound....I believe it was worth the money. Bought Dec 22, 2019.

for a sound bar I was quite happy with it

Don't know why some people have given this system a bad rap. It was easy to hook up, paired with my new tv with out any problem. It has a descent sound....no it is not a surround system and gamers would probably want something else. I gave up a bose surround sound because it would not play nice with the new tv. I was very disappointed with bose customer service and no answers why it wouldn't work. My wife didn't like the surround type experience so I gave in with her since I came out better with a new 75 in TV.

I am really happy with this purchase. My soundbar is paired with the Q80. I would have a hard time picking between the TV and the soundbar for what I like best about my new set up. I have added the rear wireless speakers. The soundbar looks and sounds great. It’s also visually appealing. Both the soundbar and the subwoofer are very solid, well made construction. The whole set up makes watching movies and sports a a lot of fun.

    HDMI/ARC connection not recognized

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Bought this with Samsung Q90T QLED, was installed after 2 weeks. We noticed this problem after the day it was installed/connected. Called back the technician and came back after 10 days. It seemed that he fixed it. And again after 5 days, the ARC/HDMI connection is not being recognized by the TV. We called Geek Squad for system check and came after more than a week. Presently it is working but I'm not sure for how long(but noticed I have to go to settings after turning it on; goes to TV speaker as sound source). The second technician said he saw/heard few of this issue with this sound bar. He would like to try the optimum cable next time. But as we have read on BB web site that ARC/HDMI output sound is the best. Undecided what to do next in case we lose the signal again. Would like to hear from BB and Samsung

    No Dolby vision pass through

It’s as though Samsung is intentionally misleading. They DO NOT give you Dolby vision pass through in this unit. I paid more than what I think these speakers are worth and I can’t even use my amazon fire 4K with this without sacrificing Dolby vision. JOKE.
