I recommend starting with this kit and get use to using Smartthings and then start to add on as needed.

The Hub works great as does the App.

The only problem i have experienced is with the provided Motion and water sensors. They keep loosing connection and say "Unavailable" and have to be reinstalled. I do not experience this problem with other brands of compatible devices.
