The size is amazing. It weights nothing, it's super fast, and reasonably priced. So why not 5 stars? Well, I guess I could do 5. But 5 means perfect to me, and I'd like the following: 1. A thinner cable, and very flexible, like Apple cables. The drive is so tiny, that the thick, non-flexible cable makes it impossible to set the drive nice and neat on something. There's no rubber feet or bottom, so the drive just flies around. And I'd prefer the led activity light on the end opposite the cable so I can see it. A tiny carrying case would have been nice too. But performance wise? All good. Black or grey would be nicer, but who cares on that part.

These solid state (SSD) drives are much smaller, lighter, faster and more reliable than conventional portable disk drives. Samsung is a reliable maker of SSD drives and this one is offered at a price point that's competitive with the conventional portable disk drives.

Use for quick photo transfers on the go as well as editing, this little drive is fast. With the USB-C cable, I ran a speed test and was getting around 500mb/s transfer speeds. No lag and larger file transfers are a breeze. It’s smaller than a credit card and fairly thin, so it’s great for use on the go.

I needed additional storage for backups on my Microsoft Surface Book and I wanted the security and speed that a Solid State Drive offered. This Portable Samsung SSD is the perfect solution. Lightning fast read and write speeds and 500GB of storage gives me the perfect solution for storing all my videos, movies, photos and more plus additional space for backups too. Plug it in and go!

I wanted to copy my music file about 300gb and growing flac files and some hi res files, I have them already backup to a 2.5 mech hdd, but I want a portable ssd, so I can carry it with me and play the music through different devices, I found this Samsung and for the price it does the job... very light and with a usb c connection, it is also compatible with the usb 3 so it works with my tv, receiver and blu ray player...I am very satisfied..highly recommended

500gb in such a small package in great but add the transfer speed and you have an awesome drive for photo and video editing. The T5 form factor is solid and the aluminum shell gives it a secure feel while providing good looks.
If you are looking for a super fast drive and need additional storage or a stand-alone media drive, give the T5 a shot.

Great for XBox One

TL;DR: It works great, it noticeably improves load times on XBox One
I purchased the Samsung T5 - 500GB External USB drive to improve the loading times for games AND add some additional storage to my Xbox One. The drive comes with USB 3 and USB type C cables - use the USB 3 cable for your XBox One. In my case, I already had one 1TB external hard drive (spinning disk) attached to the XBox for additional storage (NOTE: The XBox One requires 256GB or LARGER storage or it won't recognize the drive). The speed is approximately 25-30% faster to load games than from the external 1TB or internal. Most noticeable is map loading time in games like COD Black Ops 4's "Blackout" mode or Battlefield 1.
If you need more storage space for games because you're filling up the internal drive, get a large external spinning disk drive (cheaper than SSD). Add a SSD to the second USB 3 port on the back of the XBox One if you want improved loading speed.
Also note that this SSD drive is very small - 2.3" x 3" and 0.4" thick.

I purchased this drive to give a performance boost to my MacMini from 2012 and it was well worth the investment. After some research on Youtube on how to format an external SSD as a primary boot-up drive for a Mac, I connected this drive via one of the USB ports in the rear of the MacMini and great things began to happen. I set the MacMini to boot up to the SSD instead of the old hard drive, and I've never looked back. Everything runs faster on an SSD, and this Samsung SSD is fast on boot-up. Highly recommend if you want to give an old Mac a performance boost without cracking into the hardware itself. Just use the original hard drive as a back-up drive.

I recently purchased a great gaming laptop, but it unfortunately has a limited sized internal SSD. Messing with the internals is a pain and the T5 ended up being an equally good alternative. The benchmarks people have posted are accurate. While it’s super fast, it can get a bit warm when under heavy load which is expected. It’s far lighter and smaller than I anticipated as well. Highly recommend this drive.

Has a very small physical footprint, close to 500Gb usable capacity, can be formatted to Mac (EXT3) or Windows (NTFS) same as any other standard drive, and is fast under USB 3.x.
I did not use any included software, best recommendation is to avoid it, particularly if you are on OSX.
For those wishing to use it as external storage for a Raspberry Pi, it works on my Pi 3 without any additional power required other than that provided by the Pi's USB port itself.

I was on the fence about going to SSD, mostly due to cost but I have to tell you, after using one of these for a while I don't ever want to go back to a mechanical drive. Fast, reliable and much more portable. I know mechanical drives have gotten small but this one goes right in my pocket sometimes and it makes getting work done on the go very easy when you need to have a lot of files on you. Get one, you won't regret it!

This external SSD drive is fast, small, and very handy for mobile storage. I use it for transferring files between home and office computers. Like the metallic feel. Just one week after I purchased from Best Buy at $129, the price had dropped to $99. I don't know if I can get a refund of the difference though. Anyway, it worth the investment, and I don't have to worry about crash as there is no spinning part.

Fast is an understatement!

As the title states, fast is an understatement, ridiculously fast! I have a Macbook Pro (w/Retina Display, right before the new model came out) with a 250gb ssd. I plugged this into the usb 3.0 port and wanted to test how fast it would transfer so I moved a 1gb movie file. At first, I thought it didn't move the file because all I heard was the click of the file transfer. When I checked, lo and behold, it moved that file instantaneously! It was actually drag and drop fast, way faster than transferring it to my Sandisk 3.0 usb flash drive! I also have an old Windows 7 laptop with less than stellar specs and while it wasn't anywhere near the transfer speed as the Mac, it was still quicker than my 7200rpm Seagate hdd.
One interesting thing to note is that, on my mac, it actually showed a 500gb storage space when I first hooked it up. On Windows however, it showed something like 465gb. I'm guessing it has something to do with Windows based software that's included.
The size of the drive really is the size of a business card. Color's a matte metallic finish (kind of anodized feel) and the cable's about 18 inches long. It's formatted as exFat so it works with Mac and Windows out of the box. I've only used this as an external storage and not as Time Machine so I have no idea how it performs with that. And a blue led light comes on when you plug the drive in.
I got this before the price drop so it's an even better deal now. Only wish the storage size was bigger and that's the only reason why I'm giving it 4 stars. Other than that, it's been an awesome little drive!

The internal Hard Drive in my 2013 iMac was having issues. I did not want to pay the premium of paying Apple to replace it, and definetly did not want to break my iMac trying to open it. I decided to take a chance and try out this unit and run Mac OS High Sierra from it. I have to say that the iMac is running faster with this unit than from the internal Hard Drive it had. The performance is such a huge difference that I feel as if I just bought the latest iMac, without having to spend over $1000. Planning on buying a second one as a “working” drive (process video/photos).

I use this portable hard drive to transfer files between my MacBook Pro and iPad. It is lightweight and fits easily in just about any pocket in my computer bags, or in my shirt pocket. It includes a USB type c to type c connector and a USB type-c to a regular USB adapter. With normal care and use, I expect this drive to be reliable for quite some time.

Excellent SSD that has been reliable and provudes an easy encryption solution. It is very compact, small and lightweight and runs very cool (I have two 2TB T7s which seem to run warmer). I carry the T5 with me for work and it works on my desktop PC, Surface and Android phones/tablets. My only regret was not buying a larger drive to begin with.
As for the speeds, while it is not USB 3.1 Gen 2 like the T7, I found the T7 only sustains those higher speeds for smaller file transfers and will come closer to T5 speeds for larger transfers (although T7 is still faster). The T5 is still a good drive today and can be a good value if you can find it on sale for cheaper than the T7 (if the same price then it obviously doesnt make sense to get the T5). Overall, I am still very happy with it.
Note, this uses the older version of the Samsung SSD software and app so if you also have a T7, you will need two different apps to use the encryption feature and get firmware updates.

Samsung makes some of the best SSDs you can buy. These are much more reliable than other external hard drives, smaller, and built to last. It's great for saving pictures, videos, folders, music, or for doing a backup of your devices.

Got this hard drive specifically to use with the Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera 4k. It works perfectly, transfers super fast, and is very reliable. The size and storage capacity is unbeatable in this space. Highly recommend and will be personally buying some 2TB versions promptly.

This palm sized thin SSD 500gb drive is very fast and efficient backup solution to keep handy with the newer SSD laptops with limited storage. The USB Type C cable is v. fast; it also comes with traditional USB to USB 3.0 cable as well for older laptops. Highly recommend as an efficient add on to laptop
