I’ve had the chance to use the iExpand for a good portion of the day. First off I’d like to say it worked flawlessly. I got the app from the App Store and plugged the iExpand in. I then plugged in the lightning cable from my iPad, and just like that it was backing up my photos. Speed for me is important and this was fast. I had 1432 photos and videos on my iPad and it took a total of 69 minutes to back up the photos and the 800 contacts. I like the fact that it charges as well, while your device is backing up. It appears to charge just as quickly as if you had it plugged into the Apple charger. There really isn’t too much that it does, but it does what it is designed to do very well, and I’m totally happy with it. For me I’m just going to plug this in at night before bed and let it do it’s thing. The only suggestion I’d make, is to delete the photos you don’t want to keep before backing up. I found that there were over 300 pictures that I did not want to keep that would have otherwise taken up space. I have one question, that is, can you just buy a larger card and swap it out with the SD card it comes with? If so, that is another big plus for this device.

I have thousands of photos saved from trips taken over the years. I have kept them on my windows desktop until recently when I moved exclusively to Apple. I don’t want to pay for iCloud storage and it takes way too much time to upload all this data on my home network. This device is perfect for my needs. There were very minimal instructions included, so I just plugged in the little device to my power strip and connected my iPad via my lightening cord. My iPad began charging and a message popped up telling me I needed “the app.” I clicked the link and downloaded the app. That was it. It began scanning my contacts, then my photos. The first time took awhile and now each time I put the iPad to charge, the San Disk IExpand immediately checks for new contacts and photos. Easy, peasy. I also used it for my iPhone so now I feel comfortable that my treasured photos are protected by a backup. I like having my items backed up locally.

I personally use paid version of iCloud account to have back-up of my Apple devices. However, SanDisk - iXpand Base is a handy device to take local backup and also charge your phone at the same time. The sturdy design and soft rubber top keeps your phone secure while the wrap around groove keeps your cable tidy and your nightstand or countertop clutter-free. The iXpand Base app makes it easy to restore your backed up files to your iPhone at any time. Whether you restore to your current phone or a new one, simply plug in and tap restore to get your files back. With 15W of power, your iPhone/iPad charges fast — so you can back up and charge and be on your way in a flash. Only downside I can think about is taking back up is not fast as if you take back up on a Mac/PC using iTunes.

The SanDisk iXpand Base for iPhone (the 64 Gigabyte version) is a great way to backup your iDevice photos using removable SD cards. The unit should work well on a boat or other conveyance due to its rubberized and grippy top surface for holding your iDevice. So recharge and backup locally at night while you sleep - simple! It is a great way to back up when you have no cell or wifi service. Nice style, compact and fully functional with a nice iPhone app.

This does exactly what it says that it will. It's a charger and when you connect your phone, it's backs up your photos and contacts. Setup was nearly non-existent. Plug it in, plug in a lightning cable, download the app and then plug your phone in. My initial backup was 1,000 pictures and 720 contacts and it took about 10-12 minutes. Charging is just as fast as an Apple charger. The rubber base to lay your phone on is great, too. No more phone sliding off my nightstand. I would recommend this to everyone with an iPhone.

As a stand alone product this is a handy and easy device to use. Plug it into the wall plug your phone in and it will inform you that you need to download the app. It takes you to the app store directly to the app. Once it downloads and you start the app. You will go through the normal EULA requirement then it will ask for access to your photos and contacts. You can let it do its thing and it starts to backup you photos and contacts. Over 2000 photos and contacts and it took just a few minutes and it was completely hands off.

If you like to have a physical backup of your photos, videos, contacts, and nothing else, then this is a convenient way to accomplish that. If you're looking for something more, you'll have to look elsewhere. This is not a wireless charging base, nor will it make a backup of your phone or your apps. It will copy all of your photos and videos to an SD card, even ones that have been moved to the cloud to save local storage space. It also requires no intervention past the original setup, which itself is not much more than installing an app and making a few selections. It is very set-and-forget; you simply plug your phone into the charger, and the backup occurs in the background. I would like it more if it held the phone in more of an upright position, as the slight angle is not the greatest for viewing the screen while charging. You also have to supply your own lightning cable to connect the base to your phone. The power supply plugs directly into the wall, even though it's a microUSB port in the back of the base. That means you either have to transfer the SD card to a separate reader to pull your media off, or supply your own USB cable to connect the base to a computer. A few different design choices could have made this a much better product.

Sleek well thought out and manufactured photo and contacts backup for your iPhone with a built in 3 amp charger. Plug the bases power supply into the wall with the included power supply and plug your iPhone into the base, download the free IXPAND app and your ready to go. The only thing you must provide is the iPhone of course and a lightning cable to attach the phone to the base. It used SD cards for storage of the photos and contacts and it includes (1) 64gb Sandisk Ultra SD card to which I backed up 1187 photos and 247 contacts in less than 5 minutes and only used 3.16gb on the card. Its easy to pop the card out and put it in your computer to transfer the pics if you wish to do so as a redundant backup or to manage the card in a bigger format than doing it on the phone. You will find the photos organized by years and then months within the year when looking with the PC at the card. A separate folder for videos and another for contacts. When you hook up to charge it will backup any new files that you have on the phone.

Simple, Solid, Helpful Solution for Specific Need

The SanDisk - iXpand Base 64GB iPhone Charger and Backup is a unique product that simply does what it claims: Charges your iPhone while automatically making a back-up of your contacts and/or photos. Although it looks a lot like a wireless charging station, it isn't. But it has a neat feature that allows you to wrap your charging cable so that any excess is out of sight. There is a useful app that works well with it and there are multiple options for restoring the information to your iPhone should the need arise. Although you can, of course, accomplish the same back-up goals via iCloud, it's always nice to have added protection. In my case, my less tech-savvy wife has lost her contacts and photos more than once after swimming with her phone - even though I thought I had her iCloud back-up working (I'll skip the background story on that). So, for us, it is a welcome solution which will give her added peace. Simple, Solid, and Helpful Solution for a Specific Need. Just remember, it only works with iPhones.

This device definitely gives you piece of mind knowing that if you forget to back up to the cloud that you won’t lose your pics/videos or contacts if something happens to your phone. I know some people don’t trust the cloud and this device gives you piece of mind knowing that you won’t lose some of your valuable info. If you have a lot of photos or videos, the first time you do it I would sync it over night as it will take a while. The memory card writes at 80 mb/s that comes with it. The device is well made and has a nice heft to it, I think for the price it would be nice if it included a charging cable. Once you download the app, it’s pretty straightforward what you need to do. It would have definitely been nice if it included wireless charging, that’s my one knock against it. Since the new iPhones have it and surely the next iPad will have it, that would have been a real plus. The fact that you can just swap out SD cards for larger ones, gives you the ability to expand your storage as needed.

Great concept & Design... Missing Key Capabilities

I primarily got the SanDisk iXpand to charge and backup contacts, documents, and pictures on my work iPhone 5S and iPad Air II. The iPhone charges from 1% to 100% in a little over two hours which is acceptable, but was hoping for something a little faster from 15W. It charged my iPad in about the same amount of time (from 50% to 100% in just over an hour). It automatically backs up everything it’s designed for when plugged in, without having to tell it to; however, it only backs up contacts, pictures, and videos. This was unacceptable as I need to back up work documents as well. I especially use Notes for quick bits of info not otherwise applicable to store elsewhere. I still need to plug into iTunes to backup this data so why would I bother with the iXpand? It is good to note that the iXpand can backup and restore multiple devices. Though, you’ll likely need to upgrade the memory card if you take a lot of photos. The setup was quick and easy as it only required installing the iXpand app from the Apple Store and selecting what you’d like to backup. The app is basic and relatively easy to use, but it would be great (read: useful) if I could store my documents as well. Another downfall is the lack of wireless charging. While I don’t have a device that can take advantage of it, in this technological age, it should be standard on anything charging device. Apple has a huge percentage of the cellular device market and even though they’re behind the curve, their new devices are now wireless. So, why does SanDisk put out a new product that doesn’t support it? As a charger, this works as designed and advertised despite it needing to do more. The devices I use do not support wireless charging, but most people do or will in the near future. The biggest ‘pro’ is the ability to backup without using the cloud that many still distrust. However, I feel it only deserves three stars is due to the limitations on keeping up with technology. I give it three stars because it does what it’s advertised to do, but doesn’t do what the consumer masses (myself included) are likely wanting.

First of all this should have wireless charging, But in today's technological state, this is behind the 8 Ball. While due to the way iOS actually works, the iXpand Base can only store photos, videos, and contacts, but it’s certainly a useful option for those who prefer local storage or are out of iCloud backup space. Nice for backup storage. The iXpand Base works over a Lighting to USB cable (not included), which you can conveniently coil inside the iXpand Base, and then plugs into a wall outlet to provide 15W of power. You can also transfer files directly from the iXpand Base to a computer using an SD card or a Micro USB cable, or access them on your phone through a new SanDisk iXpand Base iOS app

The device is large with no wireless charging of your device, I am holding out hope they will provide an Android app to allow you to use your android phone and devices. I do not have iPhone but several IOS tablets. The 64GB is great but you can use larger SD cards, I used both a 128GB and 256GB. Again wireless charging would be a 5+stars but from my perspective it is a great device to backup or offload files that are taking up space on your device. You will be surprised when you free up space how much faster your device and apps respond. Great to backup without going to your PC, MAC or laptops and just store the SD cards for later retrieval onto your devices or even a large external HD. The software app is pretty powerful and adept at keeping track of where it left off in the backup process. I think I rated mainly a five star because it addresses the cloud safety issues especially give the recent hack of a major credit reporting database. I feel much better to store away from any online services because none can be guaranteed against hacking.

Finally, a product that allows you to back up your files offline. It comes with a 64gb SD card which you can swap out so that you can fill as many as possible. While you're charging, it automatically backs up all your files after you download the free app. The product is small and portable and works for iPhone and iPads. Easy and convenient.

It looks good, it works well, and it addresses a niche in connectedness - needing to have a great phone but not feeling comfortable with relying on the cloud. I like to have local backups of everything and this iXpand does just that. 64GB is fine for me for just the iphone but I wish it came with the lightning cable.

Easy to use, just instal the app and plug in and connect. I had 4 gigs of videos and photos and dread connecting to iTunes just to back them up. This was easy. It uses a SSD card that you can then transfer to computer. If your looking for an easy way to backup your photos and videos then this is for you.

It was easy to set up and use, the 64GB card is already inserted and ready to go. It doesn't seem to charge the phone much faster than just plugging the cord in the wall or to the computer. The memory back up is a decent feature, but we already made a habit of backing up every few days (photos and such) so I'm not sure what I was expecting. It does have a nice feature of allowing you to hide the cord away, but then you still have the cord from the base to the wall, so... I wouldn't recommend this unless you have a habit of not backing up your data and think the base would look cool on your desk/table.

I like that this will charge my iphone and back it up except the app has already made duplicates of some of my photo’s and wish it did a full backup to really replace icloud or Itunes. It just gets your pics, video’s and contacts but these days there are so many other factors. Also I own the 128gb phone so wonder as our phones hold more what will I do when I run out of room.

For those looking for an offline backup of pictures and contacts from your iPone this device sounds like a perfect solution. The 64 GB SD card is removable and therefore you can theoretically upgrade to larger capacity if necessary. The device is easy to set up. Unfortunately the app kept giving the error message "Base not recognized." when connected to my iPhone 8 Plus. Without the app this device is an expensive plug in charger. The construction is solid and the top has a rubberized grip so that you phone doesn't go slipping around. As far as the charging goes, the box claims that it is a "Fast charge" device. It took 50 minutes for my phone to charge up from 15% to 100%. When plugged into the wall it takes about half that time. I did contact SanDisk support about the issue. They replied the following day asking for information which I supplied. Four days later and I still have not heard back from them. Don't waste your money.
