Spike Lee's Sophomore Project

After making a provocative splash with his debut feature "She's Gotta Have It," Spike Lee followed up with this strangely charming comedy musical about competition between fraternities and sororities on a black college campus. The film stars lots of familiar faces in Lee's extensive filmography (Giancarlo Esposito, Samuel L. Jackson, Bill Nunn, Ossie Davis et al) and features a star turn by Laurence Fishburne as student activist Vaughn "Dap" Dunlap at Mission College, a fictional surrogate for Morehouse. Dunlap's crusade against South African apartheid (this is still the 80's, remember, when Mandela was still a political prisoner) creates all kinds of problems on campus and off, which Lee dramatizes in ways that are both bizarre and clever. The movie has been overshadowed by Lee's next film venture "Do the Right Thing" and several others to follow, and some of the ideas don't work that well, but if you want to get a sense of where and how Lee cultivated his peculiar style as a director, begin here with Spike's sophomore film adventure.

I recently purchased School Daze on Blu Ray & I was not disappointed... I remember when this movie was actually in the movies in 1987 or so... This Blu Ray brought back alot of heartfelt memories as well as allowed me to see the pretty & sexy actresses (Tisha Campbell, Laila Ali & Jasmine Guy just to name a few) as well as E.U. performance of "Doing Da Butt" alot clearer via Blu Ray... I highly recommend School Daze to my family, friends, business associates well as those reading my review... I regret that BestBuy's "Upgrade & Save" Program is not around anymore because I would've brought quite a few copies for myself & a few family members as well as friends...

I have been a Spike lee fan since I first saw Do The Right Thing as a kid. I had never visited School Daze, i'm not sure why, but after Chiraq, it really seemed Spike was getting back to his earlier form, and then with his masterpiece, Blackkklansman I could not ignore the fact I needed to visit School Daze, and I'm glad I did. What Spike did with the budget he had was a triumph, he also has launched so many great careers and School Daze is no different.

I loved re-watching this film after so many years. What I loved most about this anniversary edition was the interviews, including a panel where the late John Singleton spoke about Spike Lee's influence over his career. There was a weird audio glitch during one of the songs, with the music not matching up with the movement of their mouths, but otherwise it was worth finally adding to my collection.

I remember watching this film when it came out back in the late 1980s. This classic film portrays multiple storylines endemic of HBCUs and tensions that can be found within culture about race. The music scenes are enjoyable and entertaining. Definitely worth watching!

I have a few of his movies, and the ones I have are the good ones. This one grew on me and the first time I heard about it was from my older brother. It is a view of the stereotypes that blacks put on each other based on their skin color and ancestry, in the setting of an all black college.

A woke film before there was such a thing. A social, musical drama that tackles the subject of racial conflict among light and dark skinned African Americans on college campus. It takes on more than it can handle but has a lot on its mind and is well worth your time.

One of the best Spike Lee film from his early career. I've been waiting for this to come to Blu-ray for a long time. Classic scenes with great premise and positive message...as usual.

School Daze is a classic in so many ways. For instance the messages of Black on Black discrimination because of skin tone. School Daze explored some unspoken Black issues.

One of the greatest films about intraracial tension ever made and a story that only Spike Lee had the right to tell in Hollywood during the era that produced it
