I needed a hard drive for a new build I was completing and did not want to spend alot. I usually use another brand but the Seagate had better specs. I had read alot of horror stories about Seagate but have found them untrue. The drive was recognized and W7 os installed without a hitch. The drive is quiet and runs cool. I am glad Seagate has improved their quality. I bought a second one for a rebuild. Again no problems. I will not hesitate to use Seagate drives in the future.

I needed a replacement hard drive for a pc that's several years old. I didn't want a large capacity hard drive and at 500GB, this was just right for the price.

I purchased this hd to replace my existing 200g drive that was dying. The manual was easy to follow. Cloning the old drive and making this one the only existing drive took an hour or two at most. I was worried as some reviews stated this drive was noisy (quiet for me) and died soon after purchase. Day one and all is well. So nice not to have to re-install OS and software for a new HD. I have owned 3 or 3 seagate drives with no complaints so far. Ordered in store pick up and got it in 24 hrs.

My hard drive was failing. Picked up Seagate 500 gb. With included disk was able to clone old drive and be up and running if a few hours. Much peace of mind.

I bought this drive on Thursday, Jan 22, 2009 at our local BestBuy.
First of all, HDTune and Belarc Advisor read this drive as an ST3500*320*AS, not as ST3500*641*AS as stated on the box. Whazzup with that?
I purchased this drive after my Samsung died on me with bad sectors after only a year of use. I bought the Barracuda on the strength of Seagate's reputation. All the Seagate HDs I've owned in the past outlived the computer they were on. We're talking 5+ years of flawless service.
The Barracuda installed very easily, but from there on things went downhill. The first thing I noticed was how noisy it was compared to my Samsung, which I NEVER heard. This drive clicks and clunks away. And this is the 7200.11, supposedly the "whisper quiet" version. I can deal with it, but the sound is what made me google the model no and "clicking". Bad news, if indeed it's a ST3500320AS I have. This model has a nasty habit of failing without warning. Suddenly it won't boot and by all accounts the data it holds is rendered inaccessible by any means except expensive data recovery. Lovely.
There is -- or was -- a firmware upgrade offered by Seagate in the last week to stop this failure from happening, but apparently it's bricking as many HDs as it presumably saves. Super lovely.
So here's where I stand: I have what the box says is a ST3500641AS (according to the Seagate site this model is NOT affected), but which my HD software reads as an ST3500320AS, which IS affected, and may disappear at any moment unless I install the firmware upgrade, which may brick it anyway.
My response so far has been to write this review to warn others, and to backup my entire drive in case I turn it on one morning and am greeted with a failure to boot, drive missing message.
Honestly, the inconsistency of the model numbers is the most aggravating thing so far. Why should it be different from the box?

I like to purchase products that manufacturers stand behind and Seagate with its 5 year coverage fits the bill.

The drive is great, no noise, decent amount of space. The only trouble I had was getting windows to recognize it. Other than that it's a pretty good buy.

I had the same problem - box and order said ST3500641AS-RK but drive said ST3500320AS. Contacted seagate about the difference between the drives, and here is their answer:
"The basic difference between ST3500641AS-RK and ST3500320AS would be as follows. ST3500641AS-RK is a retail kit thus comes with SATA cable and software and ST3500320AS comes only the drive. ST3500641AS-RK has 16MB cache buffer where as ST3500320AS has 32MB cache buffer."
Looks to me like the 320 is a better drive? I'm keeping it.

Overall, I am very pleased with the drive. The price was good and the capacity gives me room for expansion. I use the drive for backup purposes. It sits atop my desk and has the important contents of 3 PC's. In the event of an emergency, I can grab it and go. The speed, being USB, is not a major concern for me because it is used primarily for backups. I would definitely recommend this drive.
