At first I didn't like the sound these produced as much as my previous cans, but with the addition of a good amp to balance the range these things are my go to everyday headphones.

The HD660S is Sennheiser's follow-up to the HD650, which I own the special edition of (the HD6xx). Let's be honest: These aren't headphones for people who want pulsing bass beats or a silent retreat. Open-back headphones let in all outside noise, so if you're looking for headphones for work, look elsewhere. If you're looking for rich, warm sound, these are a great balanced set of headphones that are exceedingly comfortable. The HD600 series is known for being a bit tight, but I found that (a) they loosen up as the earpads break in, and (b) you can CAREFULLY bend the metal parts of the frame to resize it for a larger head (like mine).
Don't be put off by the price--you're paying the same price for Beats but getting much better headphones for what you pay because the low end isn't artificially inflated and they're not celebrity endorsed. Best sound quality for the price I'm willing to pay.
Pros: High-end sound, even sound signature (though I'm biased against high frequencies because of hearing damage).
Cons: High impedance--expect to crank your phone volume and not get much output. Better for home use. Not for use with low-bitrate MP3s (don't touch lower than a Premium streaming service or 320 kbps rips).

An Updated HD600

It's been 14 years since the HD 650 was released, so this line was due for an update. Surely, any successor to the legendary 600/650 was bound to be met with much scrutiny, and I was skeptical given my reference headphones were the HD600 for years. In my opinion, the 660 S is a worthy successor to the 600 in particular.
Most reviews have stated that it was supposed to be an updated 650, but here's why it is not:
1) It has much more treble energy and sparkle than the 650.
2) It is leaner in the bass, but much quicker and more nimble
3) Midrange is not as laid back, very transparent, also not as forward as the 600
The result of all of these is that its sound more resembles the neutral 600. However, the 660 S does not have the same laid back and relaxed character used to describe the 600/650. Some complained about a veil on the older models which is not present here. The result of using drivers derived from the HD 700 is a more resolving and lively headphone with much improved transient response, while maintaining the tonality of the HD6x0 headphones.
Build is basically the same as the older models. They say the pads are slightly different but I haven't noticed a difference.
I'd recommend this headphone to anyone who loves the tonality of Sennheiser's HD6x0 line but would like a quicker and more lively presentation to their music. If you prefer smoothness and richness, I'd suggest sticking with either the 600 or 650, with the added benefit of them being much less expensive.

My favorite pair of headphones to date. At this price point, I expect a lot out of them, and they certainly deliver.

Sennheiser has a fine reputation. Unfortunately, these headphones artificially boost the low end so your Dance Music sounds fine until you listen anywhere else. They sound no better than $150 headphones. Save your money. - I am an experienced music, audio post production and forensic audio engineer. My hearing was tested one month ago and is still solid. You've been warned.
