Summary at bottom for those who don’t like to read novels......
I would not consider myself an audiophile but when it comes to video games, the audio in certain games is just as important, if not more important, than the visual experience. I play a lot of FPS, I also love survival horror games.
I’ve been gaming on PC for a year now, transitioning over from console life. When it came to audio, Ive had a surround sound system in my living room to heighten my experience the past few years. I owned a few headsets before I bought all that equipment however (Astros, Turtle Beach). But now gaming on a PC in my bedroom Ive been searching for the nearly identical experience of surround sound television gaming. My first pair of headsets were a wired set of Logitech G633s. Wasnt a terrible set, and I found it on sale and it was......alright. I wouldn’t recommend buying them but that’s just me
My girlfriend saw me tweeting about SteelSeries Arctic 7s and decided to surprise me with a pair about a month after buying the Logitechs. It is a great set of headphones, and it gave me wireless freedom as an added bonus. I was happy with them. They were my everyday headset for nearly a year. They sound like a wired set.
Then one day on youtube, i stumbled into the world of “pc audio headsets, gaming dacs, amps” etc etc. It got me thinking about how I do love my SteelSeries, but it is missing something sound wise I was craving for. I ended up seeing the Sennheiser GSX 1000 and it got my interest. I decided to go ahead and dive into it to see if I would like the upgrade.
It was hard to choose between the GSP 500 or 600 because Ive never owned a pair of open back headphones. But after researching the differences between open back and closed back, I felt the open back would be close enough to the spacious, open airy, surround sound I was looking for in a headset that would close enough resemble my surround sound system in the living room.
To be frank, Im glad i went with the combo. The gsx 1000 and gsp 500 are a match made in heaven. The 7.1 simulated surround sound is AMAZING, and the headphones sound is so beautiful. The highs, the mids, the lows. I don’t know the exact wordage used amongst audiophiles to describe each one but, highs and mids sound.....so natural, so crisp, nice oomph to them. The bass sounds tight, not boomy, and perfect for what i bought them for which is gaming. I honestly forget sometimes Im wearing a pair of headphones while gaming because the sounds so natural and spacey (i believe thats the word Im looking for here)
The microphone......I am typically a “I leave my mic on mute when I game online unless playing with friends” type of person, so I havent used it often. Most reviews online pin this microphone as exceptional quality, I cannot really review the microphone because to be honest, I don’t care about the microphone, but it swivels up and down only. Push it up to mute, pull it down to activate it. People hear me crystal clear and that is all that matters to me.
I also have not tried the headset alone without the gsx 1000 and i don’t intend to. Id honestly tell you if you’re going to be gaming on a PC and have the cash to do so, Id buy these headphones and the gsx 1000 to compliment these. Its the perfect combination.
Are these headphones perfect? No, the fitting is not the most comfortable, and honestly, even with the external Sennheiser gsx 1000 amp/dac being used, I wish it was just a touch louder (most games are fine, some are not as loud as Id want them to be)
Also being open back headphones, make sure you have a quiet gaming area to use these in. Sounds from outside the headset can creep into your gaming experience if you are in a noisy room. Also the sound leaks out of these, so you may disturb ppl around you while gaming. Minor things, nothing deal breaking, but keep it in mind if you have a s/o who might complain about the noise.
Tl:dr
Buy these but Id highly suggest buying the GSX 1000 to go along with these. I am highly satisfied with my purchase.

Purchased these for my oldest son, and after trying them on I have to say that they are possibly the most comfortable headset ive tried, plenty of space for your ear inside the ear cup and a comfortable seal around your ear without touching it. Oh and the sound quality is as to be expected from Sennheiser.

This is my very first set of Sennheiser headphones and I can honestly say I'll be buying from this brand again. Superb audio quality for the price and the mic is above average quality. Highly reccomend.

This headset is perfect if you’re wanting to hear everything around you. In game and in the room allows for a very wide open soundscape. I use these for Xbox and have no issues.

Wow, really blown away by the quality of the headset. Sennheiser doesn't make a bad product. I use them for gaming but I can't vouch for the mic quality as I use a blue yeti instead. The mic is cut off when you slide it all the way up and you never notice it if this is your situation as well.. definitely recommend.

I don't think you can do much better than Sennheiser. This model is no frills. You don't need software installed on your computer. They just work.

Amazing Clarity and Overall Experience

I bought these headphones after trying the Astro A50, Steelseries Pro Wireless, Turtle Beach 800 (those were trash), and the Game Ones; and boy are these the best of all. Now, these are a wired pair of headphones but to have the level of clarity that these give and the amazing soundstage. I will never go back, to wireless headphones or to another brand. I can hear noises that none of the other headphones made; making me feel like I am cheating on my hearing with these headphones. I also enjoy music while I edit my photos, and BOY LEMME TELL YA. These are great for that as well. Plus the mic is soo good, I could do podcasts with it.
Now there are some things that I need to address. The volume is great on the PC and okay on PS4; in my case, I would love to have an amp for both. But I haven't yet and that's fine. Also, the earcups are terrible but for the low-cost of $20 + tax, you can get the GSA-601 earcups. (the leather and memory foam cups used on the GSP 600) These cups kept me from returning these headphones. They do seal, which is not the best for Open Back headphones; but it does add a punchier bass and that's great for me. Plus it takes the pressure off my neck under my ears.
All in all, these headphones are near perfect but with the GSA 600 cups, make a headphone that is great for hours of gaming or just chilling and listening to music.

I thought I would try these instead of Astros but after hearing both the Astros were far superior. These headphones lacked in depth of sound and surround sound in comparison to the Astro a50s/40s. The lack of being able to control chat volume was also a major downfall. These headphones are meant to be used with the amp which is sold separate for almost the same cost of the headphones. Stick with Astro!
