Vacuum Works Well, Software Not So Much

The Shark IQ series is Shark’s newest robotic vacuum which features AI Laser Vision. I have never owned a robotic vacuum with any sort of laser vision but do have experience with the other major player in this space with their highest end “ping pong” model. The AI laser mapping is supposed to provide faster mapping of your home as well as superior object avoidance. I think this is a good robotic vacuum but the software behind it is severely lacking. The first thing I noticed just getting the R201 out of the packaging was the lack of a handle. This may not be a big deal to some but carrying the unit changes from a one handed job to a two handed job just like that. If you frequently traverse stairs with this unit, this may be a nuisance. Other than that, its just the usual find a place for the charging station and robot to sit and go. Setup was honestly more of a pain than I could have imagined because the app and the software is very buggy. First, the robot was so dead I needed to let it charge for over an hour just to get the battery power to be sufficient enough to activate WIFI pairing. Once I got the WIFI pairing going, the app on my LG V40 wouldn’t complete the setup process. It would find the vacuum but errored out every single time I tried to connect. I tried this at least 20 times in addition to reinstalling the app once, nothing worked. I then tried to setup via a Pixel 3 and it worked well but still had to try twice to get it to work. Once set up, it worked with my V40 but I still have app issues which I will discuss more later. Now it was time for the exploratory run. I first attempted to leave the entire basement open. With the messy items picked up it scanned the entire 1,500 square feet within 30 minutes. The scan ended up breaking four rooms including one large open space into 14 different rooms. This obviously doesn’t work so I closed off the problem rooms (Cluttered back room and bathroom) and it went down to 6 rooms. This was still better than before so I stuck with it. The app lets you adjust, edit, and delete rooms but I left it as is. The next time I sent the robot off to clean and it worked well. It has a very methodical path of cleaning the room, rather than my other robot. Given it didn’t scan the rooms with the closed doors I am able to keep them open all the time and the robot will not bother to try to clean them which is nice you are able to choose which rooms are cleaned and which are not. It consisted of tile, thick pile carpet, and low pile rugs. It did great on all of them! The carpet has a nice freshly cleaned look and the rug didn’t pose any problems. Overall I was very impressed in the cleaning thoroughness and fashion of going back and forth rather than ping ponging. After letting is clean for a few days I came to the conclusion that its louder than my other robot vacuum but is quicker to clean the same space. The sound likely comes from the tangle free brushroll hitting the hard surfaces because on carpet it is very similar to the other unit. The speed is likely due to the mapping it is able to generate for its path. The dustbin was filled with roughly the same amount of dirt, hair, dust as the other unit generally picks up so I know they are both doing a reasonable job of cleaning. Now for my major gripes with this vacuum which have nothing to do with the vacuum itself (other than the lack of handle). The app and software behind this unit is buggy. Setting up was more of challenge than I have ever had with a WIFI connected device in the last several years. In addition, the app will throw random error all over the place. Just trying to activate the robot to clean on my second run caused an “unexpected error, please try again” prompt. After I closed out of that screen and try to start the robot again all of the sudden it just takes off. I also get a mysterious “fluid reservoir is empty” error which I assume pertains to the mopping version of this vacuum. Other than that occasional bugs and error present themselves with the app which shows how little Shark or the developer tested it before use. Hopefully those will be ironed out before long because it would feel like a solid device all around even though the hardware does great. Overall, I think the Shark R201 is a great robotic vacuum with a methodical cleaning strategy but lacks perfectly integrated software (and a carrying handle).

A great little device that does a really good job cleaning your house - all on the same level. I liked this unit which I received as a bday gift so much, I bought additional units for my other floors. Its small enough to navigate to areas difficult to hit with a standard vacuum (for example way under the bed where dustballs seem to grow!) - this unit finds its way to those areas and cleans it all up. The only concerns I have are with any obstacles or corners that it has difficulty handling. More reasonable pricing for as good - if not better - job than the much higher priced models.

The app is annoying constantly giving errors for the mop vac water reservoir, this bug seems to have been a long time complaint, the company still has no fixed. It’s also constantly saying the battery is critically low, when it’s hardly been running for 40 mins. My old Neato had a big sensor fail, so I thought I’d try this. Well my Neato prior to the failure could do the entire area in one go, on turbo clean. This one on normal or eco cleans some of it, docks for an hour to charge, and finishes. I don’t want to hear the machine off an on from 8:30-11 just trying to clean what the Neato can do in a single shot. Returning this today and already order a new Neato to replace it.

Terrible vacuum you would think it would be a good vacuum because they're stick vacs and uprights are good vacuums totally wrong The app is horrible constantly lagging constant connectivity issues the mapping on this robots super bad It looks like a little toddler drew the map battery life so so based on your size of your home vacuum is kind of loud because of the brush roll section power honestly my roborock comes back with dust and dirt and lint from the area rugs this vacuum comes back with nothing it's like are you even cleaning Dustin is a nice size but it's like one of them old-fashioned Bissell rollers so the opening to the dustbin where the dirt flows into is just wide open so don't shake the vacuum or anything that dirt will fall right back out of the vacuum it's nothing more than a sweeper with a suction power sound that is it Don't even know if this thing even has actual suction A navigation is okay in some parts but it still comes back pretty scuffed up from baseboard paint which is not good for my baseboards being this is a brand new build home The only thing that wowed me about this vacuum then any other laser based vacuum is the mapping It took about 25 minutes to map my complete home unlike other laser robots that will clean why it's mapping this one will just wander around the house and get glimpses of the rooms and then it's done so that's the only thing it wowed me about is how fast it can map other than that this vacuum is pure junk I would not recommend this even on my worst enemy oh and I also wanted to add that the feeling of this product feels very cheap like seriously it feels like dollar store plastic

Seriously had high expectations and it did not disappoint. Easy to put together and get started! Fits nicely in a corner and is extremely smart and rarely bumps into anything. I have a lab who sheds A TON and this has helped us with allergies from all the hair in the house. I end up dumping out a full tray pretty much each time it goes around the house!

Quite surprised with this bot. Does a good job cleaning up. Mapping was off at first but that may of been my fault. Once I deleted first map and let it re-learn the layout it set up mapped areas that I labeled and now goes exactly where I tell it to go. Alexa feature is great and when done goes right back to dock.

This product does a decent job of vacuuming when it hits its mark. Sometimes I notice that it rides crooked in misses spots. The mapping could use a lot of help. And asking it to do specific rooms after its mapped isn't that good either. It's also somewhat noisy but that's not a bad thing because you don't want to trip over. Also keep in mind it bumps into a lot of things in gets scratched up on the walls. So don't expect it to stay nice and shiny. It doesn't damage the walls though. But when it comes to cleaning everything at once I give it a B. I wish I had a job with shark in product development because I have a lot of ideas of how this product could be improved.

After initial set up, you run a quick mapping of the house. Very accurate floor map. From there, very easy to create rooms on the map. This vacuum will not bump in to the wall like older style robot vacuums. Very efficient, row by row and does a great job. The only draw back is the design of the dust cup is faulty. It collects hair and debris and it's hard to get out unless you physically scrap it with your finger. Which is gross and shouldn't have to happen. Based on videos of others, they have the same issue. I hope that Shark rectifies this issue in future generations/models of robot vacuums. Otherwise, I cannot complain!

I was skeptical for sure. I have three dogs. After figuring out the mapping of my house (which took two times and isn’t easy) this thing is impressive. Can’t believe all that it picks up. Very easy to schedule. App is pretty good also. It’s very intelligent and won’t fall even fall down the stairs. Very quiet as well. My one small dog hates it though!

I bought this for my son and his wife. They are busy people and their upright vacuum has been broken and operates with difficulty but they are frugal, and the price was right, so I spent the money and they lovelovelove it. They are over the top delighted and say it's the best household gift ever.

This is the best robot vacuum we have ever owned! It cleans well and better than our other robot vacuums. We really like the house mapping feature and it is easy to exclude rooms from the app if needed. We have recommended this to friends who have bought this and they love it as well. Highly recommend!

My Love Has Come Along - Shark AI Robot Vacuum

I waited a few weeks to get some "miles" on this before I reviewed it. 4-STARS, only because it goes back to the dock @ 60% battery. Lots of reviews have said the room-mapping was bad. Not in my ranch style house, which has: 6 rooms, 2 hallways, and 2 baths. After the initial exploratory run the AI had the basics. It only improves and adapts as it runs each successive Clean operation. Only thing is me having to remember every time to empty the bin, right? This is a must do, especially if you run in "MAX" mode. Others have complained, "It is So Noisy". Compared to what, a "real" vacuum? Not even too loud in MAX. Nothing to watch TV and have this thing do the housework. Supposedly it is Alexa and Google compatible. But, it has its own App anyway. The Shark Clean App (i.e. the vacuum) setup was easy, once I followed the instructions EXACTLY. But there are limitations that make the operation less than. Editing Rooms and Zones sort of corrupted the MAP and I had to start over. In the end, if you don't ask TOO much, you can really get all you need. Oddly, the RV2001 robot AI seems to see my dog and follow it around. I've really only run the Clean Full House once or twice. There is a Scheduling feature in the App that will someday get used, but for now I like the interaction and manually pick rooms to clean a couple at a time due to the battery issue. Maybe my timing is just lucky but I can walk in a room and tell it to go do the hallway, and IT DOES! It was going to anyway, but... I am fighting the urge to give it a name and ask it to dinner. If it could just scrub toilets.

I want to give this 5 stars but to empty the tank, you have to divide it in half. What a mess it makes and you get dirty every time you try to empty it because the dirt stick in one side and banging it does not get it clean. The robot rides high thus not getting the right amount of dirt off the floor. It does get dirt up but leaves so much that you still have to wear shoes in the house. This may be a return and I may go back to iRobot and get a Roomba again. It also took calling their help desk multiple times to get this set up. They acknowledged they are still working on the software and there are still glitches - yes mine is still showing only 95% charged no matter how long it's on the dock though they seemed to have fixed the switch to 5% charged from 95% without even running the machine - seems like they released this way before they were ready for it and said, let's make money and fix it later. Now once it got set up, it runs just fine just doesn't get the floor really clean and you get dirty emptying the bin.
