fantastic tv, but takes a little work to get there

I consider myself a fairly obsessive shopper, especially on my "geek tech". I research products exhaustively, at times past the point of what one might consider healthy comparison shopping. That being said, I agonized over this purchase. A $2300+ purchase needs to be substantiated, right? There are so many options out there, each one claiming to be the next best latest and greatest blah blah. Once I (read: my wife) settled on a budget, I was able to start narrowing down my options. Knowing that I wanted something in the 70" range really narrowed down the field. I could either get a 1080p set in my price range, or get a much smaller 4K. This is when I discovered the new Q+ Sharp models...massive TVs for the price. I scoured over the forums and reviews of these sets and discovered 2 main themes: 1. "this TV looks really flat out of the box; I'm returning it back to the store." and 2. "this TV looks really flat out of the box, but after I calibrated it I couldn't believe the difference. It now looks awesome!" I obviously fall into the latter camp. I was somewhat disheartened when I first powered it on. The images looked flat. The colors were muddy and under saturated. The motion had that dreaded "soap opera effect". How can they charge this much for this TV, and why were all the forum gurus saying how much they loved it? Then I remembered one point they made in the forums. "This TV is not calibrated well out of the box. Make sure you baseline it with someone's settings here before you judge it." So I grabbed a few sets of calibration settings and went to work. After a few minutes of entering color temp-this and saturation-that, the TV came to life! Colors popped, blacks deepened, the SOE was gone. This set really sings when it is displaying 1080p content, I would venture to say indistinguishable from low to mid tier 4K sets from proper viewing distances (for significantly less cash, remember.) Even watching the compressed 1080i signal of shown on DirecTV looks great, though you can certainly see the difference between that and 1080p. I understand that 4K content will look even better, but as of yet have not been able to test any of it. I figure, if all my content looks this good now, the ability to play 4K content on this set will just be gravy on top. To make a long story short (or long, as it were...) this is a great set, but you must set it up properly to see its full potential. As previous reviewers have noted, it does look a bit less than impressive oob, but don't let that fool you. Find an AV forum. Get some calibration settings that other's have noted. Take a few minutes to set them up. You will be as impressed as I am. If you aren't willing to do these things, then this may not be the TV for you. For me, they were a small price to pay to maximize size, performance, and picture quality, while minimizing price. We must all march to our own drummer. P.S. I don't trust reviews that slam these TVs for their speakers. They are massive, and as such, are designed to be in a home theater setting. If they removed the speakers entirely from this TV, it would still be a fantastic set. Just my 2 cents. TL;DR -unimpressive oob -looks and performs like a completely different TV after calibration -if you are willing to spend a few minutes looking up calibration settings and entering them, you will be more than happy with this purchase. -hook this bad boy up to a receiver and some decent speakers for a better-than-cinema home viewing experience. -holy macaroni! did you catch GoT? what an episode...ridiculous on this 70" beast :-)

Very good tv for money. I rather pay 2500 and thats with a warranty, for a tv that can play 4k then 8000 for a tv that can play 4k get it. The only thing 3D glasses should have came in the box with tv. One more thing Playstation 4 looks amazing.

    Giant TV

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

This TV is absolutely amazing. The screen is huge and takes up less space than expected because the bezel is almost not existent which means it's pretty much all screen and no extra fluff. The picture is clear and with a little time it looks great. It is a little expensive. I got a really good deal on it and I couldn't pass it up. I haven't had a chance to try any 4k content but the PS4 and XB1 both upscale on it and look better than my previous 1080p tv so the Q+ really does make a difference. I wasn't quite sold on 4k and this sort of in between tv that will play the content made the decision to get a new tv of such a high price a little easier to swallow because its able to upscale to 4k if it does take off over the next few years. Speakers are ok especially considering the thinness of the tv. It's only a couple inches thick so there isn't much room for the speakers. Overall its a great tv with excellent picture quality and a giant screen that is capable to play the stuff in the near future. You can't go wrong if you can find it on sale like I did.

If you want to buy a LED tv today but don't have the budget for a real 4k unit and worrie about a regluar LED won't be able to play 4k content when it's more widely available in the next few years, this is the TV to buy. It offers great picture quality and ablity to up convert and plays 4k content. I'm really happy with this TV after a couple of month using it. The only issue I have is with the wifi, it just won't connect and find signals, don't know if theres a problem with the wifi antenna.

Sharp really hit it on the head with making a 1080p panel with the ability to process 4K content. The picture is insanely gorgeous on either content. I am a plasma TV fan, but I fell in love with this TV after viewing a demo of the Avengers. Fast processor at 240Hz, and multiple picture settings. I am happy with this purchase.

Good TV but... Wireless Connection is Horrible

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Got this TV about 3 months ago.. Setup was fairly straight forward, very happy with the overall build, picture quality etc but the wireless connection is the worst I have ever seen. At least once a week the TV looses it's wireless connectivity (all other devices in the house work just fine). If it was as simple as re-connecting that would be an annoyance but one that I could live with but in this case it is much worse. Each time this happens the TV is unable find the router unless I do a full reset which involves re-programing/setting up the entire TV... forcing me to spend approximately 20 minutes each time. Right now there is a good chance I will be returning the TV to the store.

    Bad tv for the price

Don't know where to start it seems like they packed an off brand tv in a 70 inch sharp. Big disappointment from the start when I plugged it in and waited for a nice bright color. Tried for 1 1/2 to get a better picture with no luck. Tried watching super man on directv with nothing but dark dead colors and poor motion brake up. Colors had no life. My wife and daughter walked in and said it was no match to our old Sony XBR. Tried watching local news to get a better picture with no success. I finally decided to throw on a blu ray and got a better picture but it was still dark compared to my old tv. Sound was terrible my daughters insignia 40 inch kicks this tv butt. Believe me I'm not putting Sharp Q Plus down I'm just giving it a minus 4 because I can't give it a 0. Maybe there high end Q Plus with 12000 contrast and 240 hz with aqua flow 960 for $3299 .98 will do the trick from all the bad dark dead colors and motion brake up in fast scenes for you but at that price just get a real 4k. Try at your own risk if you've been a owner of top of the line Tvs you'll take my word for it.

Great with Bluray not so good with everything else

I was very excited to get this higher definition TV. Out of the box the colors were off. After adjusting the regular and advanced settings movies like Avatar would look great, with impressive resolution, however colors such as skin tones were still off, looking fake or washed out, depending on the wettings. After contacting Sharp and after a number of email exchanges, I thought it was enough. Today I just got the Sony KDL65W850A, and can only tell that the colors, resolution and picture are what I was expecting from the Sharp TV. Even the black levels are comparable to plasma with the whites and clarity of LCDs. Sony's resolution may not be on par with Sharp, but when watching TV from 6-10 it will be hardly noticeable, whereas the picture on the Sharp TV did really disappoint me. I believe this had the potential to be a top rated best seller for this year, while 4K is still a work in progress. The other fatal issue for me was the grainy or bad resolution when watching regular HD TV channels, whit perhaps not the best resolution. If you only use this TV for gaming, Bluray or good quality materials and don't care so much about color accuracy, then go for it.

after weeks of research and was convinced with the specs and other reviews I went to Bestbuy to make the purchase. the delivery was on time, the setup was quick and easy, now here are the issues; took 21 seconds to start up, colors and pictures wasn't worth the many (geek tech gave up) white lights bleeds through the edges which is very annoying when watching movie, sound-speaker have to be the worst I have ever heard from any tv, there is also a delay to my surround receiver (geek tech gave up) there are to many other to mention here. be careful with what the Manufacturer spec and other reviews, find out for yourself this is an expensive tv to have all these problems. I'm going to try the Samsung and keep my fingers crossed.

Ok If Viewing from In Front Of Tv

My main problem is with sharp support. I called for them to help me get TV setup my TV is mounted in an entertainment center so I cant unplug it. So they told me I could not be helped. I have went to forums where I have a decent picture not the picture I read about. I paid cash and it is past the 30 days Guess I am stuck. I really dont like you have to sit directly in front for a good picture.
