Good System But Could Use a Design Update
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The SimpliSafe Defend Wireless Home Security System is ridiculously easy to install and seems to work consistently well. It is a little behind the times in terms of design language. The system includes a base station, which looks somewhat like a lava lamp solidified in white plastic. The base station communicates with all the individual components of the system. It comes with 4 rechargeable batteries already installed, a wall outlet power cable, and two jacks for phone lines. You do not need to use phone lines for the system to work. The base station has a speaker to provide voice directions and warnings, but it is not interactive. The wall unit looks somewhat like a toddler's toy. The buttons are small, as is the monochrome display screen. But it works fine. The system includes two motion sensors. The sensors are supposed to be mounted 5 feet above the floor and have basically a 180-degree field of view from side to side. The field extends out 30 feet and also goes down at a 45-degree slope. If you have pets that stay inside, a cheat is that you can mount the motion sensors upside down. We installed ours at roughly 3 feet above the floor upside down. They seem to work perfectly fine, and our dogs stay a bit more sane. The system also comes with one key fob that lets you arm or disarm the system. It works fine, but again, it's not an attractive unit. The box also includes a user-friendly set of instructions as well as a sign to place in your yard or window. The system includes 6 entry sensors, which are pretty easy to mount to a door or window. They are a bit more bulky than it seems they need to be, but they work very well. Overall, that's the primary theme for the system. It works well but needs a serious design refresh. Frankly, the design looks inspired more by children's toys than by any modern systems. in term of plans, for about $15/mo, you get basic monitoring, which is a great deal. Add in another $10/mo, and you get smartphone access to settings and managinng your system. I was a bit disappointed there was not an option for free monitoring via cell phone. Regardless, the plans seem like strong values when compared to other monitoring services out there. Also, there are no contracts; your service is month-to-month. You can add onto the system with cameras, other sensors, and a variety of other safety sensors (such as smoke, water, or carbon monoxide detectors). That's pretty nice, but the system doesn't play nice with smartthings or a smarthouse setup, which is a shame. The quick summary is that the system is flexible and functions well but is simply unattractive and doesn't integrate with a smarthome. Fortunately, the appearance of the system does not in any way negatively affect the ability of the system to offer a solid home security option. And that's what this is: a solid home security option. If it were reasonably attractive and had the ability to integrate with any smarthome system, I'd really love it.

Basic Home Alarm System
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Very basic alarm system, i guess i got the "Delta" Home Security Command model? It came with 5 entry (doors and windows) sensors, 2 motion sensors, 1 siren alarm, 1 key chain remote, key pad and base station. SimpliSafe has a hassle free installation with no drilling involved, it comes with tape mounting, i personally would not recommend using these in the long run especially with the entry sensors. The good thing is there are holes in the mounting plate, everything has a mounting plate so you can use tape or screws, its up to you really. I am however disappointed that it did not come with a camera, sold separately for almost 100 bucks, you'll think with camera being a common theme with these new alarm system it would be standard but its not. It did not include a "hazard boost" but the base station does include a siren option which is cool. Simplisafe states that the motion sensors do not detect pets, i haven't tried this option because all my dogs stay outside, i do have a cat but its an outdoor cat as well so i can't say much of this feature. I don't like that the keypad doesn't have illumination which makes it harder to see when the lights are off, just thought i throw it out there if you are coming home at night. The app is a cool feature, it has a log of all the activity to see who's coming and going, you can also receive notifications if the alarm is set off, and as well disarm and turn on the alarm from it which is pretty cool. If you purchase the camera you can actually see HD video and security footage from the app as well. The app itself its not very big its, 20.1 MB's. The service itself cost roughly $15 a month in order to take advantage of the SMS text alerts, cellular call function, IT WILL NOT work without being connected! The good thing is that the siren will sound, but without paying for the monitoring service the alarm will not contact you, call the police or dispatch center. The monthly fee is pretty inexpensive compared to other options so its not too bad. Overall the set up was a breeze, just need to connect the USB to a computer and everything else is pretty self explanatory, this is a good option for a functional and inexpensive alarm, especially if you've ever been a victim of a home burglary. I would recommend to buy the cameras for this product though, it's a good alarm for the price it does exactly what its suppose to do without the heavy monthly price tag that you get from the bigger alarm companies, and of course no contract, you can cancel anytime! What's not to love about that? I never been a victim of burglary but i know with this alarm system i have better control of my home when i am away. I will try the monitoring service for a few months to see how well it works, i'll keep you guys updated.

Cheaper than ADT
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.purchased to replace an old ADT panel. love the features, didnt like the price of monitoring. but its cheaper than any other service... Works well but has some issues like. leaving a door that has a sensor without it going off after.... but it works and the price was right. Add a dog and a firearm and your all set

Excellent Home Security System Package
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So many home security systems these days have either a high monthly cost or a high cost for the installation or the system itself. This security system is easy to install yourself, at a very reasonable cost for the package itself, and offers very low cost options for security monitoring services though those aren't even required, which makes this one of the best decent home security options available.

Affordable Basic Home Security
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The best thing about the SimpliSafe defend system is that it is very easy to setup and use out of the box. Can be configured and setup in like an hour or so and the customer support is great and provide easy to follow instructions on how to use it. The other great thing about SimpliSafe is that it's a completely configurable system, with five packages available. If you feel the need of a camera, you can easily add one to this system, Similarly extra sensors can also be added. The base station is capable of managing up to 41 of them. The base station that powers the SimpliSafe system is a 10.5-inch-tall large white plastic cone with a blue light at its base; it glows steadily to tell you that the alarm is on, and pulses to tell you there's an error with one of your sensors. Setup of the base station just requires placing it in a central location within 400 feet of your sensors and 100 feet of your keypad(s), and plugging in the included power cord. It doesn't connect to your Wi-Fi router, which gives you more freedom in placement. Inside, there's an 85-decibel siren, a backup battery, and a SIM card that allows cellular communication for monitoring. The keypad and sensors are powered by user-replaceable lithium batteries, which should last about five years with standard use, and the system will warn you when they need to be replaced. Installation requires no wiring or drilling. I simply pulled off the battery-activation strips, peeled the backing on the 3M Command-like strips, and adhered each component according to the instructions in the included Owner's Manual. Components are easy to move around without damaging your walls, and you can take the system with you to your next residence, which is a welcome feature. If you'd rather, you can use the provided screws to install the components in a more permanent fashion. One nit: The hardware—particularly the base station and the keypad—looks dated. The chunky white plastic coupled with the tiny, monochrome display on the keypad look seriously retro. When the alarm is armed and a sensor is triggered, the keypad will beep, and you have 30 seconds to enter your PIN. If you do not enter it, the base station siren activates and sends an alert to SimpliSafe, and the company will contact you via phone and ask you for the safe word that you designate during setup. If you don't get the call, or you don't provide the safe word, the Emergency Dispatch Center will send the police (or firefighers in the case of the smoke and carbon monoxide sensors). Bottom Line: SimpliSafe succeeds in keeping things, well, simple: Setting up the system, which includes installing the keypad, entry sensors, siren, panic button, and environmental sensors, then setting up a PIN and testing everything took me about an hour.

Simple setup, basic system
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.SimpliSafe's Defend system has enough trimmings to protect a single family home. Two motion sensors and 6 entry sensors should cover entryways, windows, and other areas in need of monitoring. The base station is the only wired piece, with the battery-powered sensors and keypad providing wire-free security. The system itself is stand-alone, so it does not rely on your home's WiFi or telephone capabilities. Setup is as simple as following the provided instructions or using the free app for guided setup. Putting up sensors requires attaching a device to a flat surface - that's it. The wire-free sensors can be positioned however the user wants it; the base station and keypad present the most difficulty, but once up and running, the system takes it from there. I had no communication issues from the base with the multiple sensors on my four house levels. This system lacks cameras and the basic security package is a lot less robust in terms of smart connectivity than the more advanced package. It doesn't look all that aesthetically pleasing either, but that doesn't deter from what appears to be a great service behind it. That being said, it is a very nice system with easy installation that does provide a trusted level of security. I would recommend this system in addition to some security camera additions for complete peace of mind. Full disclosure, I was provided this product for my unbiased, honest review.

Easy Installation and Optional Monitoring
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.SimpliSafe is one of the more affordable options in diy home security systems. Setup is incredibly easy, and monitoring is not required. I was able to set up the system in less than an hour. Having optional monitoring is a great option for some people, sensors still chime and the alarm will continue to sound. Basic monitoring is $14.99/month, which is very reasonable. There is also an interactive plan that adds text and email alerts, and an online dashboard, for $10 more per month. With the interactive plan, you can also set sensors to only alert you (no alarm triggered). There are no contracts, and you can cancel monitoring at any time. The system is easy to install and can be expanded. You can easily purchase additional sensors or keypads and install as needed. The sensors are attached with double sided tape, but you should run a bit of clear silicon around the sensors to ensure they stay in place. The sensors are a bit large, but I actually like that because they are visible from the outside, which might discourage potential intruders. There is also cellular connectivity in the tower with a battery backup. There are no wires needed (only to plug in the base station), which makes this a very flexible install. After everything is installed, you can set the system into a test mode to verify everything is working as planned. Make sure to check your local codes as some cities require registering that you have an alarm system installed.
