Still a legitimately scary movie after all these years. A must-watch for horror fans. In my opinion, no other horror movie that has come out since this one has even compared in scare factor. Compelling story and atmosphere. Watch it in the dark and turned up loud!

One of the better horror movies in the genre

It's gotten quite tiresome with the mass-run of supernatural, stuck-in-a-house films over the past 15 years. (In fact, I had heard Sinister was good, but when I went to purchase, I could only think of Insidious for the first 15 minutes). In the age of Sinister, Insidious, Oculus, Conjuring, and Hauntings in... The original Sinister is quite good. It plays more on tension than actual gore (although there are a few "quick flash" scenes). It lets you form your own opinions along the way, feeding trickles of information to you on its trip to guide you to the ending, increasing your anxiousness along the way. To ensure it never gets too far out of hand, it adds one deputy who brings along some mild comedic relief- note that this comedic relief in no way detracts from the film, but rather, it's played honestly- a man using humor/ his nervousness being humorous in a very realistic manner, as a real person might do in such circumstances. While the reviews of Sinister 2 gives me little hope for the franchise, it's wonderful to see the original takes a lot of care to set itself apart from the rest of the supernatural/ house (done to death as studios attempt to limit budgets on the always risky horror genre) themed movies out there. Care was put into Sinister, not a cash-grab.

Finally - a creepy flick lives up to the hype

There are so many recent horror movies that don't come close to living up to its hype. I'm glad to say "Sinister" is not one of them. A really atmospheric, suspenseful horror movie, Sinister left me on the edge of my seat. While Ethan Hawke is a fine actor, to seem him play his character as one-dimensional was a letdown for me and the only drawback to his portrayal of a true-crime novelist trying to regain his former fame and glory. Overall though, a very good movie.

Different plot twist on a good horror movie

My girlfriend at the time and me really enjoyed this movie. I liked it enough after renting it to buy it. It is a very spooky movie. I even loved the music score throughout. You will be sucked in by an interesting plot, yet a but far fetched. I must warn you that it is VERY graphic. Without giving anything away, there are videos of murder scenes that were filmed by the killer. These scenes are very realistic and graphic. I found some hard to watch and I don't get uneasy by horror movies often. I would NOt recommend for younger viewers, though I don't remember seeing any nudity and bad language was low I believe. Enjoy!

I'm a huge Supernatural movie fan. Ghosts and biblical horror movies I really enjoy with the occasional UFO ones too. But I really look for the movies that have a good story that makes sense and not only the "jump scare" type. SINISTER was this type of movie. From the very opening scene the director sets the tone of creepiness. Honestly, it dropped my jaws and gave me the feeling that I was in for a movie that was going to tug at strings that weren't tugged at before in a horror film. I loved this movie and recommend it to those who like the mystery/horror genre. Love it love it love it

I went into this movie without large expectations, but it definitely lingered with me for a few days after watching it. It uses the dark very well and the actors are great, especially Ethan Hawke, as the true crime author at the center of this story. Though you as the viewer figure out pretty much what's going on before the protagonist does, it's still a fun ride and a disturbing finale.

I saw this in the movie theatre when it came out. I was taken in by the fact that this movie used a combination of the "Found Footage" genre & regular cinemetography for the movie. It made a good blend for this Supernatural Horror Thriller. The acting was usual par for course with a good cast including Ethan Hawke. And not to gory

The movie builds suspense really well, and I feel like it earns its scares like all good horror movies do. I found the ending a little weak though as the marketing for the movie kind of spoiled it for me. I would rank it beside Insidious or Mama and slightly below the Conjuring among recent mainstream horror films.

I'm usually not a big horror movie fan, but this movie was the creepiest, most disturbing film I have come across in a long, long time. Each of the 8 mm film clips with the innocent sounding titles contain horrific scenes that kept me up nights. The acting, plot, music and most of all photography were all top-notch. Not particularly gory or violent, but probably the scariest movie I have seen since The Silence of the Lambs.

This movie is a must-see for fans of the Conjuring, Insidious 1 or 2, or Oculus. Great scares lead up to a twist ending. The somewhat predictable plot is lightened by great acting. I'd recommend it to horror fans. Beware watchers for those sensitive of the element of children and death.

Has it's fair share of jump scares, but after the initial shock, you don't feel at all relieved. The scares stick with you and you will go back to being just as tense as you were before the scare. Ethan Hawke gives one of the best performances I've ever seen in a horror movie. Disturbing.

As a horror cinema fan I can say that this is what a true horror movie is suppose to be. It might have some flaws, but they are so minor that the over all intensity of the film as an entity overshadows each and everyone of them. This was a refreshing horror film since nowadays horror movies are basically comedy films because of how bad they are. This movie gives you hope for the future of the horror genre.

First of all love Ethan hawk in anything. Horror movies with the main character a writer is always fun too. The movie has some very scary realistic elements to it. I'd say it gets campy as it plays out but definetly worth seeing.

HORROR MOVIES ARE MY FAVORITE, AND THIS MOVIE, I HAVE TO SAY IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE SEEN IN A WHILE COMPARED TO ALL THE OTHER HORROR MOVIES THAT HAVE COME OUT RECENTLY. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO SEE PART 2! IT PULLS YOU ALONG THROUGH THE STORY NICELY, NO REAL LAG SPOTS THAT PUT YOU TO SLEEP. IT DEFINITELY HAS SOME GOOD STARTLES AND SPOOKS!

This movie is by far one of the best horror movies I've seen released lately. I couldn't wait to watch it again. Ethan Hawke is phenomenal, and the little twists in the movie really add to the tension and surprise/horror while watching.

you can not beat a bargain price blu ray. I have bought many movies from best buy and will continue to do so. I love all these kinds of genre and they are hard to rate because of one's taste, but you can't beat the bargain price.

Horror movie fans will most likely enjoy this movie. Not for the faint of heart, though. There is some disturbing content. I don't want to give anything away, but if you want more detail, check out the parents guide on IMDb.
