    Solid ANC Headphones

Bottom Line: The Skullcandy Venue performs nearly as well as more expensive active noise cancelling (ANC) headphones, but they lack some of the feel and finesse of higher priced alternatives. Pros: Impressive noise cancellation; good sound quality; fast charge; Tile integration Cons: A bit bass-heavy; non-foldable; bulky carrying case; small ear cups; buttons difficult to use when wearing Review: Active noise cancelling (ANC) headphones are invaluable if you dislike the ambient sounds of commuting/travel or a noisy work environment (I particularly dislike the engine noise in an airplane). As such, I was extremely curious how the budget friendly Skullcandy Venues hold up to more expensive options in the product category. I was pleasantly surprised how well the ANC performed against the hum of the various fans/air purifiers I have at home, and it did an overall good job blocking out other ambient noise. For most users, I do not think they would notice the difference in noise cancellation on the Skullcandy versus a more expensive pair, especially when listening to music. I found sound quality to be very good, although the bass is a bit overemphasized in the Venues. The headphones pack a solid set of features, including “monitor mode” which allows outside noise in, fast charge boating 5 hours from 10 minutes of charge, and, perhaps most interestingly, Tile integration so you can track your headphones if you misplace them. There’s nothing exceptional or distinguishing about the design with the exception of the small Skullcandy logos on each ear cup. Unfortunately the cups do not fold, which creates a fairly large travel profile when the phones are in their storage/travel case. My biggest issues are with the fit and feel of the headphones. The ear cups are a bit too small to completely cover my ears. When I’m wearing them, they fit like over-ear headphones for the top of my ears but more like on-ear headphones on my earlobes. It doesn’t impact their functionality (both passive and active noise cancellation still work really well) and it’s not uncomfortable per se, but the fit definitely feels off for me. Additionally, I find that the tension on the headband is just a tiny bit too tight for my preference. I assume this will loosen, though, through more use. Second, I find the buttons difficult to use when the headphones are on. Like most in this category, the buttons are located on the bottom of the ear cups, but the buttons are fairly flat and offer little travel. As such, there isn’t much tactile feedback, and I found myself pressing around on different spots to find the buttons. Once again, I presume that as muscle memory with the headphones improves the buttons will be easier to find, but they weren’t immediately and easily usable.
