Switch version sadly done dirty by the engine

I was hoping the Switch version didn't get the short end of the stick... and it did.
The game itself is good, but the Switch was left behind sadly.
The game plays as if it was made with a fluctuating 480i in mind, the render distance is really short, so things are either not shown, or flat and pixelated. (The distance I show in a screenshot attached to this review)
The game runs, but not even at a consistent 30FPS. There WILL be times where the game will chug; specifically the open world part when going fast. And there's nothing we can do about that.
The stages are ok, you'll see some graphical quality hits, but you *may* notice the frame drops in the faster/heavier sections.
You can try and turn off a few things in the options menu, (like motion blur) and get slight improvements, but it won't get you that steady 30FPS in the open world area.
Sega, you know HOW to make games. You have for decades. Switch version didn't deserve this.
If you have the other consoles or even a decent PC, grab their respective versions instead.
The Switch (and the other platforms) has been around a while, letting your dev teams learn the (respective platforms') hardware & optimizing for it isn't hard(or a bad thing), but nowadays the publisher tells everyone to pick an Engine and then proceed to shove everything onto it, and then let THAT do ALL of the work.
(That usually ends badly if something goes wrong and isn't caught by the QA team, example: results in Critical Day One patches)
The tradeoff of relying 100% on The Engine is that overall quality takes a significant hit. The Engine has limits; the hardware it's running on.
It WILL have to make sacrifices to remain stable.
While stability is not something that should be sacrificed, if the quality suffers significantly, then the game loses, as it's no longer a polished product, but a burden to itself.
I'm not going to be returning my Switch copy; I did buy the PS5 version as well because I wanted to take it on the go & have it on the big screen too.
Comparing the two versions, I feel that for THIS steep of a quality deficit, Switch version shouldn't even be priced at $60.

yet another adventure with my favorite blue blur and I always love sonic games and am happy to have it in our switch collection. In my opinion the game is really fun to me and a good kind of different and regardless of the graphics which I don’t care for unlike the majority of gamers. if it runs well I don’t see the problem. I know the frustrations when dealing with preorders especially with this site but seriously people, don’t put down the game for it, complain elseswhere

Straight to the point, focusing mainly on game play here:
This game is comprised of two playstyles
Cyberspace
Open world
Super Sonic
Open world Sonic is the best sonic has ever felt in a long time. He is responsive, fast and a joy to play. If he is too quick or the movement is overly sensitive for your play style, you can change the control sensitivity in the options menu.
Sonic also has a new combat system that is easy to learn, however, a downside is you are not encouraged to use other attacks. Allowing you to spam the same attack repeatedly on most enemies without penalty. In hindsight, Sonic has only really had a few moves throughout the series (homing attack, bounce bracelet) so it's nothing new. But It is a massive step back in terms of variety / difficulty compared to Unleashed.
Cyberspace has the worst gameplay. It's extremely stiff and at times unresponsive. I've died numerous times from Sonic randomly shooting off to the left. Once you adapt to it's shortcomings, it can become addicting.
Without spoiling the game, the boss fights are really exciting, the mini bosses are really cool. And of course the music is outstanding.
After 11 years of garbage, Sonic feels like he is finally on the right track again. My only major complaint is Cyberspace's movement, the story only feeling like an apology to the fans instead of a... well, story and the story ultimately dropping off a cliff at the end.
Overall, I enjoyed it for what it was.

The game looks really nice. I like the open zone where you explore and also the cyber stages are well designed sometimes challenging depends in the one. There are some flaws with the game like frame rate stutters in certain places. Otherwise this a fansgames and highly playing it.

This game has everything an OG sonic fan would want. Immersive open world and exploration to continue the plot. Fun stage levels that have a twist of old gamws and new elements gameplay mechanics. Fun character interactions and feels like a dreamcast and gamecube era game. They do the characters justice in this game and I would reccomend it to anyone who grew up as a sonic fan. Not to mention they’re adding free DLc which adds to the already amazing story, including additional playable characters.

Sonic frontiers is like if you take that sensation of driving a car and you remove the need for gas. I'm kinda sad about the steal case it came with though, sense I got the switch version of the game.

Game is very enjoyable especially for sonic fans. Open world concept allows you to let Sonic run around creating havoc. Boss fights are epic and story is good. If you're a Sonic fan there really is a lot to love about this game. Controls can be difficult in certain parts of the game which can leave you frustrated especially considering it will escalate the difficulty on some things that should be relatively easy and turn them into a monster of the task.
