Whether you’re a Sonic fan or just looking for a movie to pass the time, def give this one a watch. Kept my interest overall, 4 stars.
What’s it about? Young Sonic was raised by Longclaw until one day when showing off his powers, the bad guys discover him, resulting in Sonic fleeing to another world (Earth) via his rings and leaving an injured Longclaw behind. Now older and living in Green Hills, he follows a couple he calls Tom “The Donut Lord” (Marsden) and Maddie “The Pretzel Lady” (Sumpter), as he longs to be part of their family. Getting upset one evening realizing that isn’t going to happen, he triggers power outages along the Pacific Northwest resulting in the government requesting help from the crazy Doctor Robotnik (Carey). While fleeing from Dr. Robotnik, he is discovered by Tom who tranqs him with one of Maddie’s veterinarian darts. During this incident, Sonic’s bag of rings falls through a ring that is open to San Francisco. Tom agrees to help Sonic get his rings back while the duo plays a cat and mouse game with Dr. Robotnik. They tackle some of Sonic’s bucket list along the way and eventually meet up with Maddie and her family. There is a happy ending and an opening for another movie (and what movie wouldn’t be complete without a couple product placements?).

Watched this as a late birthday celebration with friends.
And yeah if you know what you're getting into you're gonna have a good time; a 90s esque road trip movie with a great character and innocent human characters.
The main thing though is the jokes; weather or not you'll laugh that much, Sonic acting his usual hyperactive, over-talkative self, spouting pop culture references (which makes sense when you find out his back story...which is actually quite sweet is rushed), and Carrey acting OTT.
The thing with alot of the joke sis that charecters acknowledge how "jokeish" of a statement their comment was, that or just snarking it off or groaning; it'll make or break it for you.
But Sonic looks and sounds great and I love the little "adventure" (seriously ain't that much of an adventure) Marsden and Sonic have, and his wife has the thinnest characterization but is a sweet enough character. And once again is backstory introduction is very nice (I have no clue if it was based off the comics or some long lost game but if it was then sweet!)
Oh btw that one joke about family movie night, I feel in love with this film already, that was my favorite line! And the people who watched it know what I'm talking about...and it's my next review ;)

Sonic is a movie that surprisingly was better than many expected. Gamers are all too familiar with bad game to film adaptions. There have been few to shake the stigma. Warcraft was fun but could have stood to be longer and take it's time. Tomb Raider was a reboot modeled after the 2013 reboot of the games, and despite Alicia Vikander giving it her all; it didn't fare well at the box office.
Detective Pikachu released to general acclaim and was a fun romp and did well enough a sequel is in development.
Sonic seemed to have the odds stacked against it. An initial bad trailer led to a delay to a "fix" the character model. The effort paid off and we ended up with a film that treated the fans with respect and just provided a fun time. It's of course going to appeal to kids but if your a SEGA kid or grew up with the games? There's a lot to enjoy here too. Easter Eggs are sprinkled liberally throughout the film. And Jim Carey is just haming it up and is a surprisingly good fit for Robuttnik.
This steelbook is fantastic and comes with a little mini comic which is a fun little addition.

After the fiasco with the Sonic design in the first trailer, I didn't know what to expect with this movie. The movie itself without the horrendous Sonic design looked okay, even with Jim Carrey. Even after they went back to redesign Sonic, my feelings were still mixed. I didn't get a chance to see this movie in theaters, but I talked to those who did see it, and they told me they enjoyed it. So, I took a chance and not only bought it, but bought the steelbook.
To be honest, I was really surprise on how much this movie made me smile and laugh. And it wasn't just Jim Carrey carrying the movie, Sonic (voiced and motion captured by Ben Schwartz) made me laugh as well, though some of his pop culture references did get annoying at times. Also, the human characters were not annoying. I genuinely enjoyed James Marsden and Tika Sumpter characters. But I was really impress by the Easter eggs this movie had, some took a second watching to see them all.
The steelbook itself look cool, and with this Steelbook, it also contains a comic book of Sonic.
Overall, Sonic the Hedgehog was a fun, entertaining movie for fans and new ones. I can't wait for a sequel.

I have to admit up front, I had pretty low expectations for this movie purchase. I bought it because my six year old granddaughter insisted that it was the best movie she'd ever seen, bar none. So I bought it on sale, and I must admit, watching it with her was a lot of fun. Her enthusiasm for the title character, an alien creature on earth that can move at speeds the Flash can't even imagine and looks like a blue teddy bear with a bad hair day, was infectious; but what I enjoyed most was watching Jim Carrey, as the villainous scientist Dr. Robotnik out to capture and dissect Sonic, chew through every scene with the manic energy only Carrey can bring. He's his own animated special effect. James Marsden and Tika Sumpter as Sonic's human protectors are along for the madcap ride.

I love this movie. My son(8) loves this movie. My daughter(9) loves this movie. Even my wife loves this movie. If you have ever played and enjoyed Sonic the hedgehog games you will get a kick out of this movie. This is a fun light hearted family movie, if you want something serious don’t look here. A lot of times a video game movie like this doesn’t hit the mark but this one does. Jim Carey is so funny in this, it reminds me of his classic comedies. There are so many Easter eggs and throw backs to the Sonic games that as Sonic fans my kids and I were comparing notes on what we saw. I bought my step son(28) a copy. I bought us a copy. I bought my little cousin(18) a copy. I only heard good things, they all love it. I hope they make a sequel.

If a friend had told me that Sonic the Hedgehog would be the IP to get a decent video game to movie adaptation, I would have ridiculed them mercilessly.
If they had said that Jim Carrey would play a skinny Robotnik and there would be a whole cast of named human characters in an actually good live action/CG movie with a novel origin story for Sonic, I would have sought out professional psychiatric help for my clearly insane friend, before he fell any deeper into these absurd delusions.
Unfortunately the meds and counseling have all failed me, as I seem to be looking at the peculiar movie at this very moment. That said, madness really is far more agreeable than I had imagined.

I went into this movie with a bit of skepticism due to the rather spotty past of cartoon and video game adaptations on film, but this ended up being a pleasant surprise. They really did justice to the characters of Sonic and Dr. Robotnik, and the supporting cast was really solid. This is not a movie that breaks the mold but it manages to offer plenty of fun and excitement for all ages while being true to what the character of Sonic is. I ended up seeing it twice in theaters and I now own the rather handsome Steelbook set.
The included comic isn't anything terribly exciting since it's all done in pixel graphics but kids might like it. The steelbook itself is very nice and I am glad I picked it up.

I am a big Sonic Fan, and to see Sonic's Movie be really good is amazing! When the first traier released I thought the design and plot were a disaster... Thankfully this is not the case and I'm so happy about that, Sonic has character, the humans are actually likeable and not annoying, Him being in our world is a cliche, but I like how it ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE a video game character isn't where he's supposed to be, therefore feels lost, most movies with this setup just throws them in New York and doesn't get deep into the characterization, this film actually does, The action! Oh the action is amazing! Well paced and fun! And the final battle at the end got me squeeling like a fanboy in the theater (Luckily I was alone lol)
For the Steelbook: Amazing quality! I just hate how the discs are in, but I have the standard release along with this so I don't mind too much, I don't like how the comic doesn't have a place so it's seperate from the steelbook, but that's ok just something I wish was there
Overall, a great movie from an unexpected franchise!

Sonic the Hedgehog is currently known for being one of the highest-grossing films of 2020 as well as one of the best video game movie adaptations of all time. But does it hold either or both of those titles by comparative default? The short answer is, yeah, kinda.
It’s no secret either in fan or critical circles that the vast majority of video game movies suck the big one. The worst are childhood scarring and even the “best” of them are either laughably awful in their terribleness or so inoffensive that they’re “meh” at best. Sonic the Hedgehog is tough to place, but I would say that it falls in the latter category.
First off, I would like to address the blue hedgehog in the room with Sonic’s initial and retooled design. Of course, I was in the camp that despised his initial design with his too-human looking teeth and eyes. When the announcement was made that he would be redesigned, I was relieved, and when the more game-accurate design was revealed, I was ecstatic. Whether this was all planned from the start is irrelevant to me, as I take it as a positive move of movie studios listening to fans who know better. I will admit, whatever else, that did more positively color my opinion of this film, for better or worse.
The rest of Sonic’s character is, for the most part, fairly accurate to both what the games presented and all of the various other materials Sonic has appeared in over the years such as comics and cartoons. He’s arrogant, funny, wisecracking, full of himself, everything a fan could reasonably expect him to be. Ben Schwartz does quite well conveying all of that personality, although his voice sounds a touch too similar to the one he also uses for Dewey in the DuckTales reboot. Most of the human characters are forgettable bit parts, but they do fine for what very little the script requires of them. James Marsden has apparently still not learned his lesson about playing bland second fiddle to a talking CGI animal.
The only other character that matters to both the plot and the audience is Jim Carrey as Doctor Robotnik. Firstly, I’m glad they went with the old-school OG name for the character, and not the Eggman name, which isn’t as iconic or intimidating. Carrey doesn’t 100% physically resemble the game character (except for a very brief scene at the end, which was appreciated), but he was great where it counted: being hilariously entertaining. This was a return to form for Carrey, and this was the closest to the laugh riot goofball he was in the 1990s. That nostalgic feeling of smiling at that kind of performance from him was worth the price of admission alone.
The story, however, is where the film slides back into average territory. It starts off well enough, in Sonic’s world. We see a glimpse of familiar terrain and character designs (Sonic’s pursuers in the opening scene look like echidnas a lá Knuckles), but all of that is summarily whisked away from us as the same virus that infected movies like Smurfs, Fat Albert, and even the He-Man movie from way back in the 1980s rears its ugly head and drags Sonic down into disappointment territory. Franchises like those and Sonic, that are set entirely in a fantastical world completely removed from reality, are frequently butchered by Hollywood by moving them into our world. It may be so it’s more familiar, but I suspect that it is to save on set design and computer effects budgets. It’s much cheaper to have a He-Man movie set in Los Angeles than it would be to have the entire thing in Eternia. But such short-sighted thinking severely harms these films because the fans in the audience are completely uninterested in real world locations for these fantasy realms. We want realistic-looking visuals, not true-to-life settings and characters. I want to see Sonic run around Green Hill Zone from the games, not “Green Hills, Montana, USA.” Because of that location change, Sonic’s story of a fish out of water trying to get back home is such a boring and overdone plot, it takes me out of the entire thing, wishing for it to get to the next action piece rather than an actual resolution. Carrey and Schwartz’s performances are enough to pull the film back from being terrible, but not enough to push it into being that good. It’s watchable, even rewatchable, but by no means a great cinematic entry into the Sonic franchise. Like I said at the start, this may be the best video game movie out there right now, but when the competition is the Super Mario Bros. movie and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, that title is won by default rather than true merit.
Still, Carrey’s return to form and the character redesign for Sonic are significant pluses in this film’s favor. In another environment, this movie would probably have fared far worse than it did. But 2020 being as it is, and the release window of this movie as it was, Sonic the Hedgehog was entertaining enough to be one of the best (and last) theater experiences of the year. It is skating by on its circumstances, but as a big fan of the franchise since my youth, that’s enough for me here.
Final Grade: B-

Even before that disastrous first trailer dropped, it was pretty much assumed that a live action movie based on Sonic the Hedgehog was doomed to failure. But with a surprisingly solid script, a great cast, a phenomenally hammy performance by Jim Carrey, and a *very* much needed redesign of our blue furball hero, I'm pleased to find that "Sonic the Hedgehog" continues the recent trend of video game based movies not totally sucking.
Despite a couple of plotholes and several jokes that don't quite hit their mark, the movie is a fun sit, and manages to entertain even if you aren't familiar with the video game franchise. It manages to have quite a few laughs and a few genuinely touching moments (which absolutely wouldn't have worked with the original Sonic design, *shudder*)
Fans will dig it, and non-fans will most likely enjoy Jim Carrey's most over-the-top performance in well over a decade. I'm looking forward to the inevitable sequel.

It's hard to think that a movie about a blue hedgehog that runs really fast would be viewed upon as one of the most significant releases of the year. Mainly because "Sonic the Hedgehog" isn't much different from other family films it shares a lot in common with. Like "The Smurfs" and "Alive & the Chipmunks," the movie features a CGI character ripped from his appropriately animated (and colorful) world landing in the much more mundane 'real world' and interacting with human actors who (for the most part) act as if they are talking to thin air. We've seen it before, we'll see it again, and this review would normally write itself because of how painfully redundant this tends to be. Yet the movie is saved by two things: A brilliant casting decision that was made during the filming process, and a corporate decision that was made after the film was almost complete due to fan outrage.
It's the latter decision that would make this film more noteworthy than it otherwise would have been, but we'll get to that in a Super Sonic second (no need to 'rush' things, after all [ho ho]). On that first note, however, it seems the film makers were certainly doing their homework when they decided it would be a great idea to cast Jim Carrey as the villainous Dr. Robotnik. I'm not sure how that decision was made or why Carrey decided to accept, but it brings new meaning to the term "the villain is usually the most interesting character in the movie." Well, alright, 'interesting' might be a stretch, but he's certainly the most entertaining one here. Rather than the somber and serious Jim Carrey we've come to know the past decade, we get the lovable nineties Jim Carrey who talks fast, is flamboyantly manic, and does random dances that I can't for the life of me explain why they are important to the story itself...but dang, they sure are fun!
His take on Robotnik reminded me a lot of his performance as The Riddler in "Batman Forever" (just a little more kid friendly this time). It's appropriately cartoony and would easily be a perfect fit should this series ever decide to move back to the animated CGI world at the beginning of the film. The other aspect of the film that works is Sonic himself, who ends up having a great screen presence after a last-minute redesign took the world by storm. By now you've heard the story, but for the few who are unfamiliar, a brief recap: "Sonic the Hedgehog" was almost complete and ready to be released to the public when the original trailer dropped to a huge outcry. The world HATED what Sonic looked like! From his humanoid legs, full set of teeth, and uncanny eyes, the outcry was so bad director Jeff Fowler announced they were going back to the drawing board to redesign the character and delay the film by a few months. There is some concern to be had about letting the Twitter mob have a say in how a film is made (how many of us truly know what we want from a movie after all), however, from a personal perspective, the original design was so bad this was probably the wise thing to do.
Instead of having a somewhat realistic character who blends with the real world but is unappealing to the eyes, we now have a literal cartoon character that doesn't fit with his surroundings at all, but is much more pleasing to gaze upon. If I'm being honest I'm not sure if that's an entirely great trade off (and I would certainly like to see what was finished of the original footage to see how some of this would have come off), however it seems like the right decision was made. Not because it placated a bunch of angry Sonic fans, but because the movie plays so much like a cartoon, it seems silly the project at one point considered not embracing this aspect to the fullest. Considering Sonic was at one point more recognizable than Mickey Mouse, the old design should have never gotten to the point it did, and while I've got mixed reactions as to how to got changed, I don't think Paramount could have sustained another infamous design choice like the ones in "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," so I'm cutting them some slack. As for the rest of the movie...eh, it's a kids movie. What do you want me to say?
The action scenes are appropriately focused on a lot of speed and robots, the screenplay has the usual jokes one would expect, and Jason Marsden is a pro at acting alongside cartoon characters after having starred in "Hop" and "Enchanted" (and having pointed that out, it sort of feels like a promotion to be in "Sonic the Hedgehog"). The fact that the movie is better than, say, "Yogi Bear" comes down to having a good actor elevating the material and a late-to-the-game redesign that everybody happened to love. Otherwise "Sonic the Hedgehog" likely wouldn't have crossed the recommendation line. That it does comes off as a bit of a happy accident, and I can certainly say with confidence that parents are unlikely to be too bored. I mean, sure, it's not "Detective Pikachu," but it's also not "Marmaduke," so I'll take my wins where I can and safely recommend it for parents who have young kids and limited movie options in theaters at the moment. Should a sequel come along hopefully the film makers will lean more into the animated aspects, but we'll cross that crumbling bridge when we get there.
