Almost two years ago, I found myself in a Best Buy. I wanted something to use to listen to music in the garage, but I dislike bluetooth speakers / cheap ones for general... cheap... sound quality. I somehow made my way by the Sonos products. I speak with a relatively unhelpful associate, as there was a few products to choose from, and the display wasn't working perfectly (they had just re-oriented the products in-store). I look up Sonos on my phone and read. I find a few of their claims online: 1) Awesome sound quality (of course they'll claim that!) 2) Always updated (software updates come around) so the speaker doesn't need to be updated due to software limitations 3) Feature packed + lots of supported music services... I mainly use Spotify + Pandora. So - I decide to get the Play:5, for a very hard-to-swallow price. I arrive home. Download the app on my phone. It walks me through setup, step-by-step.... it does require an ethernet cable, but I'm a PC nerd so I had one. Setup was easy. Almost, too easy... I'm sitting on the floor in my living room, with this speaker next to me. I add my Pandora account. Set the volume to 60%. Mind you, all of this is being done via my phone, to a speaker connected to only Power after connecting to Wi-Fi. I hit play. Absolutely astounded. I had to turn the volume down - It was so loud, and I was about two feet away from it. I take a moment to collect my thoughts... and hit play again. Volume at 40%. Still too loud - I'm talking to my roommate, nearly yelling. Fast forward 18 months. I love this speaker. I use it as my alarm, I take it into the garage when I'm hanging out or working on my car, I heft it around the house.... I love it. I've referred probably 13-15 people to buy it after they see mine - it's amazing. It just works. Sound quality is PHENOMENAL from something this small. It has an insane amount of bass for something this size. Clarity... amazing. It just works. I love it. I want to buy more... I just don't need more. This one is enough... isn't that crazy? Great product. I love it. Buy it if you're on the fence about it - give it a shot, and you'll probably love it. Nobody I know has returned theirs, and they all still love theirs. They just work, and they work extremely well.

I had specific criteria when I went shopping for a speaker. It had to be a great speaker in just one unit (one housing, not separate components like an independent sub woofer), it had to have great wireless connectivity to my phone, it had have great bass on top of great sound quality, and it had to be convenient. The Play 5 met all of those requirements. This one speaker fill up my one bedroom with ease to the point I worry about getting noise complaints at half of the volume. The bass is solid and you can "feel" it. It was a close competition between this and the Bose Soundtouch 30. While the Bose had more connection options, when listening to them side by side I was more impressed by the bass on the Play 5.The audio quality is crystal clear over wifi and I dont have to worry about how close I am to the speaker. The advantages I would give to bluetooth is the speed and quickness of connecting up other devices (ex your friend comes over and wants to connect their phone). Overall I am thrilled with this speaker. This covers all my needs for my one bedroom apartment by itself and in the future when I move i can always add on more speakers to each room.

I just purchased the Play 5, and two Play !'s earlier today. I cannot be any happier with my purchase. Let's start off with the intentions of the purchase. I am a sophomore in college living in a dorm, and love quality music. Are these speakers going to be over kill for my dorm room? Yes. Will I have the best speaker set up in my college? HECK Yes! To start off, the speaker is expensive. It is one of the more expensive speakers on the market, but compared to all the other ones that Best Buy has, this is by far the best one I have listened to. I love how easy it is to set up, as well as how expandable this is. I was considering either the $1750 sony sound bar/sub woofer, or the SONOS. I ultimately choose the SONOS because I am not limited to just one speaker, but I can buy as many as I want. I also see it as an investment because when I move out of college into an apartment, I already have an awesome home theatre set up that I can add a sound bar and subwoofer to. Lets get to the quality. It is amazing! In the Play 5, it has 6 different drivers in it. When I first powered it on and did a sample, I was blown away at the "highs" and the "lows". For one speaker, it had a great range. I will be honest, the bass isn't the best feature of this speaker, but then again, this isn't a subwoofer. The bass is just right, and It can pump out a pretty solid groove. Besides the great sound quality, this speaker is a sexy beast. It is sleek, anesthetically pleasing, and looks like a solid $500 high quality speaker. Overall, I give this a 5/5 and would recommend it for anyone looking to add it to their home theatre set up, or just to use as a wireless speaker in their room. This speaker can pump out pretty good volume so it would be fine for a small office or any normal size room in a house!

The boxes do have a good sound but the set up is just...don't even know what to say...horrible. Complicated, we have to wire, the app is so bad, missing basic stuff like "change the network" among other things that the most outdated tech device will have. Bought for my business, and regret a million times. We will look for something that is closer to the 2000 era at least. Will return all in spite of sound is good, but so many better options in the market. Even a HOMEPOD will do better than this. Shame.

Thank you for the kind words about how the speaker sounds and we are very sorry to see you have had these issues with our app and with set up. Since you are setting up your Play:5 in a commercial environment there are definitely different considerations than when installing it in a home, including which music services to use. Our customer experience team which you can reach by phone, e-mail or Twitter should be able to help assist you with your set up. So far, I have not been disappointed with anything from SONOS. The play:5 is a smallish unassuming looking player as is all of SONOS speakers. That's a plus for me. They blend in really well and you can put them anywhere there's an electrical outlet. I love the multi room sound an ability to control everything simply with an app. I love not having to run wires and the bonus to that is you can move them around without having to deal with speaker wires that you tucked in and hid. I added my play:5 to my living room, where I have a pair on ONES in stereo configuration. The ONES are great but I wanted a little more volume and sonic range. Living room is pretty open and has cathedral ceilings, so there's a lot of space to fill. It gets loud now and the 5 adds some lower end that the ONES struggled with. The play:5 will do the job as a standalone as well.

I added 2 play 5's to my playbar and subwoofer. That combo is awesome. I listen to a lot of music and podcasts. Also watch movies and concerts. Sonos makes everything better. The play 5's and(playbar) sound great and get Really Loud!. Rock concert like without any distortion. I love the fact that you can have a home theater system and/or speakers throughout your home wirelessly. I also have 2 play 1's in my kitchen. And one in my bedroom. My Sonos system is one of my all-time favorite purchases!

Sonos makes the at home listening experience very easy and efficient while providing great sound quality. I happen to have their other products but recently splurged on this Play:5 to connect to my AudioTechnica turntable First the sound. This speaker has an array of 6 drivers that provide a great sound stage when listening to your music. I have heard that stereo pairing two of these Play:5s takes it to another level, but that will happen on day with more saving! I have a large open living area and this speaker completely fills out the entire space with fantastic sound that will always get compliments at parties The design of the speaker is modern, sleek, and very appealing in the home. Switching from streaming audio over to my line-in input for records is very easy with the autoplay feature I grew up in an audiophile home and this speaker is certainly a fantastic quality product and incredibly user friendly and easy to use. High recommended to anyone!

Audiophile Review / Bluetooth Adapter Available

I was very impressed upon my first encounter with the second generation Play5 that I listened to on a display shelf. I purchased a Play5 several weeks later and was even more impressed with this speaker after getting it home and utilizing the customized room tuning feature and adjusting treble and bass to my preference. The high frequencies are crisp and clear and the bass is incredible for this size of a speaker. You can actually feel the bass! Each of the six speakers has it's own independent amplifier that results in full caption of power throughout the speaker. After enjoying listening to some of my favorite songs through the Play5 and discovering that it had a feature in the settings to add another Play5 that you could play in stereo mode, I went out and bought another one. Purchasing the second Play5 created true stereo sound with both speakers working independently of one another providing greater depth and sound. The only thing missing with the Play5 is Bluetooth! This is why I gave it 4 stars as opposed to 5! However, I purchased a Logitech Bluetooth adapter that plugs into the back of the Sonos Play5 and now can stream directly from other devices that I utilize for music, videos, and " books on tape". Note: If you have two Sonos speakers playing in stereo mode you will only need one Bluetooth adapter. Sound will be played through both speakers when the "In Line" feature in Sonos settings is activated. Hopefully this review has been informative and has given you the confidence to purchase your own Sonos Play5.

    Music To My Ears

After reviewing and comparing several high quality speakers, namely Bose and Sonos, I decided to go with the Play 5. I already had 2 Play 3's that I use in my bedroom. I really loved the sound of them. I read several reviews on Bose speakers and they were great. Then I went to Best Buy and listened to the Bose speaker that I was interested in purchasing. Then I saw the Play 5 sitting there on the shelf, luring me to come closer. (Why did I push that demo button?) The sound that came from the Play 5 encompassed my entire body. My ears let out a sigh of relief as I closed my eyes to take in everything. Amazing! I could hear every instrument clearly. Nothing was garbled. I turned the sound up and was amazed that the quality of the sound didn't change. I called the sales associate over and told him that I wanted the Play 5 right then and there. I came home and plugged it in. Setup was a breeze...completed in about 5 minutes, if that at all. Just for giggles, I paired it with my Play 3's. Oh me, oh my! How did they get that heavenly sound in there? I unpaired my speakers and danced like a teeny-bopper, and I'm far from teen anything...lol. I fell asleep that night listening to my Play 5. I highly recommend this speaker. You get what you pay for and this is well worth the price.

You can never go wrong with Sonos! This was my first play5 and i am in love with it. The sound is very clear and crisp but also has a great bass to it. This one speaker will fill a large room with a full and satisfying sound!!! If you think one is not enough then you can always get a second play5 and pair them in stereo mode. The sonos APP is amazing and the most user friendly music app i have ever used. This device can be setup and working within 5 minutes. The only con about this speaker....would be the price. It is pricey, but this product is quality! You pay for what you get.

if I were rating the sonos for sound quality alone- it’d be an easy 5 stars but I frequently have issues with the app and connectivity. I experience issues where the app simply will not connect to my speaker unless I plug it up via ethernet. now I understand that a bridge may increase my network stability but if I buy a $500 product I shouldn’t have to drop another $150 for it to work properly and it’s just not always reasonable to expect my speaker to be in the same room with my router. at any rate I love the sound quality and, imo, none of the other wifi network speakers (forgive me for not knowing the official name of this class of speakers) can match the sound quality of sonos. I get deep full sounding bass without it overwhelming the rest of the sound and the play:5 also gets pretty freaking loud. I’d buy it again but only if I was wealthier so I could afford to also invest in a bridge.

So, to start. I bought this to use in my yard with the kids. There was not alot of... portable speakers for audio in the store, and I did want one that did sound good, and was loud enough for a large yard. This hits that, but was very expensive for features I will not use. This speaker requires a wifi connection, even though it has an 3.5 aux input. Also it takes a bit of time to connect. It can be hard to setup, because you need the app and other things for a speaker. But it does sound good. The bass is ok, but not... thumping. The highs are good. I think you cant blow this speaker because it still sounds good at max volume and I think that was a good design to make it run under max power so nothing breakes. Thats not to say its not loud, because it is, just i think it was made to not blow itself up.

I added the play 5 to my two Play Ones and couldn’t be more pleased. Well built speaker looks good and sounds fantastic. Much more base than expected and sounds very clear even at high volumes. Easy to set up. Tried using with aux input from the TV Headphone out but got some audio delay which was expected. Also, it can’t be paired with a Play One for a stereo pair, not an issue though.

We decided to upgrade our home audio system with a wireless multi-room system and couldn't be happier with our decision to go with Sonos. The PLAY:5 has incredible room filling sound. Highs are crisp and clean and has plenty of depth and bass. We use it with our other Sonos speakers for music and movies. Very easy to set up through the Sonos app and can be easily grouped and ungrouped with other speakers on the network. The app also allows you to adjust the EQ setting if you prefer more or less treble, mids, or bass. Also has a line in for turntables or other devices. It is a very expensive speaker, but if you love music and want it to sound incredible in your house then it is worth the price of admission. Compatible with Alexa for even more convenience and hands free operation.
