    Great speaker - poor app

I've owned a lot of bluetooth speakers throughout the years. Pound-for-pound, this Sonos speaker has the best quality of any speaker I've ever owned. The design is elegant and the wireless charging unit is simple and unobtrusive. Pairing the unit to my phone was easy. My biggest issue with Sonos is not with the quality of this speaker but how (and why) they force customers to use the Sonos app to play music/audio through the device. I want to be able to use my iTunes app to find music, play music, change music, get information about the artist and much more. I don't want to use the Sonos app to control my music. The Sonos app and user experience is poor compared to the iTunes app and interface. Why does Sonos think their app should stand between their speaker customers and the preferred music provider of their choice. They make a great speaker but they don't make a good app. In speaking to other Sonos owners, they all have the same issue. I believe Sonos should rethink how they force their customers to use their app. To be clear, this is a great speaker and if you don't have a problem using the Sonos app to control your music, I highly recommend this speaker.

It sounds frustrating to experience connectivity issues with your Roam SL speaker after updates. Since these problems arose after both the speaker firmware/software update and the Sonos app update, it's likely a compatibility issue between the two. Here are a few steps you could consider:

Restart and Reconnect: Try restarting both your Roam SL speaker and the device running the Sonos app. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary connectivity issues.

Update Everything: Ensure that both the Roam SL speaker and the Sonos app are updated to their latest versions. This can sometimes resolve compatibility issues introduced by previous updates.

Contact Sonos Support: If the issue persists, consider reaching out to Sonos customer support. They can provide specific troubleshooting steps or let you know if there are ongoing issues with the app that may affect connectivity with your speaker.

Since you mentioned being on the phone with Sonos support for an extended period without success, it might also be helpful to follow up with them to see if there have been any new developments or workarounds since your last contact. john.milton

Portable, Durable, Delivers a lot of Sound!

This speaker is a great option for someone who wants a less expensive entry point into the SONOS ecosystem or a great way of expanding your SONOS system with a portable solution. Its basically the exact same speaker as the slightly more expensive ROAM but lacks a microphone for voice assistants. Sound quality is very good on SONOS products and the ROAM SL is no different where its very clear and crisp with all types of music from rock to hip hop to electronica. The sound signature out of the box is not overly bass heavy nor does it deliver an excessive about of treble however I found the vocals with all types of music to be quite pronounced. You can adjust the sound signature with a basic EQ (just bass and treble) to get something more to your liking. With increasing the low-end, the bass response is OK but can be a little muddled with deep lows, so if you’re looking for a “bumping” speaker you may want to consider something different. The amount of sound this can produce though is pretty amazing where it was easily able to fill both my kitchen and living room with clear and crisp sound at higher volumes. Another thing that’s amazing about this speaker is although the speaker points in just one direction, there’s a surprising amount of sound that can be heard even from the back of the speaker if it were facing away from you. So you could certainly put this in the center of a room to have sound in all directions. The build quality is top notch just like all SONOS products and this speaker is solid all the way around. It lacks any sort of rubber/silicone bumpers though so it’s not something that can just be thrown around but seems like it will hold up well over time. It has an IPx7 water resistant rating and an IP6x dust resistance rating so it can certainly be used around the pool without worrying or even a camping trip. One thing I really like about this speaker is that it comes with a nice, long charging cable (46 inches) which is something you don’t see too often so you’ll have some flexibility there in terms of listening while charging. You can certainly find other bluetooth speakers in this price range that can produce louder sound as well as equivalent sounding speakers for a little less money, however what makes this speaker great of course is the SONOS integration where the speaker can be linked with the SONOS app which will allow it to be accessed from your home network. The setup process is a little more involved than a typical bluetooth speaker but it should just take about 5 minutes within the app. The unfortunate thing though is that it does not appear that you can add this speaker to a Google Home speaker group which is the same as my other SONOS products I own.

    Another great Sonos product

Another excellent Sonos product to add to my collection! Currently I own the Sonos ARC w/Gen3 Subwoofer, Sonos Beam, and 2x Ikea Symphonisk sonos speakers. I have also owned Sonos One speakers in the past. The entire line up of Sonos speakers are excellent. They sound amazing, they are aesthetically pleasing, and they are built with quality in mind. The Sonos – Roam SL is no exception. First off, the SL stands for “Speechless” meaning this is NOT a smart speaker with Alexa or Google Assistant etc. So if you are looking for those features, this is NOT the correct speaker. Opt for the Roam without the “SL” in the name. Given that I already have a plethora of smart speakers in my house, I did not need another one and I am perfectly fine with this speaker not being “smart”. The Sonos Roam – SL has a high-quality build with an excellent sound. I do feel that it lacks a little bit of bass but its nothing of concern. Battery life is also excellent on this device. I find myself using this portable speaker more than any of my other portable speakers and this is why: It integrates with my Sonos ecosystem. What I mean by that, is I can play music on all of the Sonos speakers I already own at the same time throughout my entire house, including the Roam. And I can carry the Roam with me to areas of my house that don’t have speakers, like my back porch, and truly have music all over my home. This is an incredible feature, and one I use very often. I would highly recommend this as a portable speaker because Sonos truly does produce an excellent product and even more so, if you already have Sonos speakers in your home, it integrates perfectly!

    Added to Sonos ecosystem

I first started my Sonos adventure after purchasing and returning several mid quality soundbars about 7 years ago. I had finally got into home theater and needed some good speakers and I had been looking at the Sonos for a while but the price point was a little more than I wanted to spend. I ended up with a playbar , sub and a set of the original play ones. This system was awesome in sound and functionality and I became a Sonos fan. Later on I purchased the ARC and several other Sonos “one” speakers. Currently I have 9 sonos speakers in my ecosystem with the most recent being the roam. I got this speaker because during summer days in the pool I was bringing a sonos one outside in the triple digit heat and needed a more durable option. This roam speaker is great for battery life and durability as it can be submerged in water and withstand the elements. It’s also the only sonos speaker I have that has the ability to connect to Bluetooth so you can travel anywhere with it. Ok so how’s it sound because that’s the main thing I want from a sonos product is incredible sound.. well this speaker falls short on that. The bass is non existent and at louder volumes the sounds becomes distorted. I mean it’s a potable speaker but if I’m in Wi-Fi range I’d much rather use another Sonos speaker. And if I’m traveling there are much better and cheaper alternatives. So I’m disappointed with this speaker but it is what is. Sonos bass seemed to go away with a recent update though maybe they are will give us back the boom! Can’t help but wonder if that update is hampering my opinion on the roam…

When I first opened the box for the Sonos Roam SL, I didn't think there was any way I was going to keep it. While I had looked at this particular speaker online several times, I was not prepared for really how small it is. But, because I have used other Sonos products for several years, I thought I would at least give it a shot and I am so glad I did! The setup process is as simple as all of my other Sonos speakers. Just go into the app, press the plus, wait for the speaker to update, and you are basically done. This is just one of the ways Sonos really leads the pack when it comes to linkable sound products. The app just works and setup is essentially foolproof. Once I had the Roam added to my account, I started putting it through its paces, while not really expecting much at all. But true to the Sonos name, the sound is significantly larger than the package. Clearly, this won't be a bass heavy sound, but overall it is well rounded with zero tinniness. No matter the volume level, there is absolutely no distortion and it doesn't sound like it is struggling in an way. I can't say much about the battery life as I keep it on the magnetic charging base (not included) when it's not in use to keep the battery topped up. There is no microphone on the SL but that hasn't been a problem for me.

I have used a previous Sonos speaker and it also was a "portable" one. The SONOS move. While yes it was portable it was heavy you wouldn't leave it in your backpack kind of portable. This is light and small and have IP67 and Bluetooth as well when you're not home. With the Move it has Bluetooth as well but wouldn't switch between WiFi and Bluetooth automatically but this does. Ports / io: USB type C and a wireless charging functionality. You can use any Qi wireless charger but SONOS also sells one as well which is magnetic to the bottom of the speaker. Inside the box you get the speaker , a USB type A to USB type C cable and the usual manuals. For buttons you have the power button on the side/back next to the USB type C port and the forward , back and Play and pause buttons. Works simple enough. Battery life is rated at 10 hours. It's a Sonos speaker and you can use it with other speakers or another Roam SL for stereo sound . It uses wifi and using the app you can connect services like Spotify and etc to play on it . Easier to move around the speaker than with Bluetooth since you don't need your phone or device close by. Also has Bluetooth when you're not home. Sound wise it sounds pretty good for the size especially I just wish it could get a tad louder.

Finally got with the times and bought a Bluetooth speaker. The sound is clear and it is pretty loud for a small speaker. My only complaint is that not all of my music from iTunes plays. The error message Sonos gives is that the song did not download properly for it to play, which really stinks.
