Customers are saying

Customers often highlight the excellent sound quality, ease of use, and Dolby Atmos capabilities of the 1155W 7.2-Ch. A/V Home Theater Receiver. Many also appreciate the receiver's power and straightforward setup process. While some users noted the unit can get warm during operation and that the menu system could be improved, the positive feedback on sound and ease of use outweighs these concerns for most buyers. The price point is also frequently cited as a positive aspect.

I loved the STRDN1060! This is a superb update, with excellent sound quality for the price ($499), and which adds a slew of useful features. While it doesn’t compete with models like the Onkyo TX-NR838, which have a little more oomph, it does offer some very good incitements to buy. If you’ve got around $500 to spend, this is the one you should go for. I love Sony’s interface, which continues from the one present on 1060, and which is very easy to use. I love the great sound quality - far better than I’d expect from a budget unit - and I love the fact that it not only has Dolby Atmos and DTS:X functionality (not a given at this price range) but also DSD functionality, meaning it can play ultra-high-resolution audio files. A nice touch, and not one you see often. Not quite a top ten model, but boy, does it get the job done.

I've no complaints about sound, connections, remote, features, power or build. The board and transistors are top quality for the price. I use banana plugs and bowers & Wilkins speakers. In a 5.0 setup you don't miss a sub. 5.1 setup with phantom settings gives you a virtual 7.2 setup. The controls are EASY. Spend 5 MI jtes with the easy setup or dig deep with per speaker pair controls. For me it is replacing a Onkyo TX-NR515 due to the video out failing (even after courtesy recall in 2015). I loved my Onkyo and would have picked the 686 but BB isn't carrying a solid inventory thanks to covid. The hdmi video is much more rich in color when gaming and the hdr is very nice (that's new to me, the txnr515 did not do that well. I recommend though a receiver fan that sits on top. Especially if you're stacking. That power makes it run slightly warm and sucking the heat out quietly helps in confined placed. Antec has a nice solid 2 fan topper. I do have the up scaling on but my TV tells me it's 1080 when gaming. My Onkyo upscaled no problem.

Sony STR-DN1080 7.2 Channel Home Theater AV Receiver The update to the well received Sony’s STR-1070 is here and I think it has been worth the wait. The big news here is the addition of Dolby Atmos and DTS:X support. So for those lucky home theater fans that can add the additional speakers, they now have an affordable Sony to drive their smiles. Like the 1070 the 1080 fully supports 4K HDR and a long list of music file types. Everything is here for a modern home theater experience for now and well into the future. From my time with the receiver everything has worked very well. I did find the sound a little on the bright side but there are plenty of sound options so you can shape the sound to be warmer if that is more to your liking. If you not familiar with the all of the features in the STR-1080 then you're in for a long list. Highlights to me is the full Chromecast music streaming, not new to the 1080 but glad it was retained. I can walk in the door and pull up my streaming app and have music playing without ever touching anything but my phone. Sony recommends you install their SongPal app which has been renamed the Sony Music Center. You will want install the app as it does help with some of the settings on the receiver. One big disappointment that is very important to how I use my music library is it seems the sleep timer in the app is broke. You can set a timeout on the receiver but its global and starts the timer once the receiver is on. You won’t find a dedicated sleep button on the included remote. I encourage Sony to keep development of this app and fix and add additional features. I would like to just use the Sony app for all my music but it’s basic focus is the receiver and then link to your separate music app. The possibility of whole house audio is here but you will have to spend sometime setting it up. As much as I like this receiver I was expecting a better onscreen interface. The build quality of the remote is poor at best and it is very limited in its functions. In this receiver class you should get a full featured remote but that’s not found here. The onscreen interface starts out in the Home screen which is a dedicated button on the remote. This will be your launching screen to change receiver inputs, streaming music and radio stations, custom presets, sound effects, 2nd receiver zone controls, access your local network and the advanced settings screen. It works well but the option to play from a network folder and the advanced settings screen look dated and out of place for a receiver released in 2017. I was finally hoping for a real music player to access my saved network music files but it is a limited folder search without the advanced playback options it should support. The receiver setup was quick and maybe easier than any I have done. Sony uses a stereo mic so when you run the speaker calibration you don’t have to place the mic all over the room. Just place it in the most common sitting area run the wizard. For me, most of the speaker setup was correct. I did however have to change my speakers from large to small. This is a common problem with most receiver calibration routines so I knew to check. It had no issues connecting to my network from both its wired and wireless options. I think for most users this receiver has all the options you would need. For the higher end home theatres a step up to more speaker support might be where this receiver is limited. The Sony only supports two ceiling speakers for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding. In a small room this can still bring the joy of the rain falling on your head. Larger home theaters might want to have more speaker support. Overall this is a very nice home theater receiver that brings excellent audio and enough connection options to keep the dedicated busy but still easy for the novice to match up to that new 4K TV and its growing content.

Replaced a Pioneer to support 4K

I had a Pioneer that was about five years old and it was a disappointing experience. So when I replaced the television with a Sony model, I decided it was time to lean into the same brand for other items (4K UHD player, receiver, TV). Overall, I'm very pleased compared to the Pioneer it replaced. First of all, setup is a breeze. Allowing it to auto detect the speakers and set the balance means the sound field is really well setup. The other unit I had did something similar, but the outcome was not as full. The controls are easy and straight forward to use. It's smart enough to detect when I am trying to change devices and switches inputs automatically (appears to have removed the need for a universal remote). It supports WiFi, but I opted to hard-wire instead (entering long passwords into devices like this is usually painful). It handles all the sound encoding that I seem to need. In short, I don't really have a complaint.

Excellent choice if you need two separate locations to send wired sound to. iPhone App is flawless - so easy to choose locations and specific speaker sounds. Setup was easy and the size is standard - fit in a regular sized cabinet. Recommend a perforated cabinet door as this runs warm. Has ARC and detects tv to automatically turn connected devices on/off with ARC compatible devices - make sure you use correct (usually labeled ARC) HDMI port!

I bought this from Best Buy to replace my 7.2 Onkyo that was destroyed when a surge came in through a Spectrum 75 ohm line, knocking out four other equipment pieces. Onkyo is currently not marketing its receivers, the one I had connected to eleven speakers, that included two amplifier driven subwoofers. It was very hard finding an affordable alternative that would allow connections to this many speakers. Then I found the Sony 1080. It allows me to connect all my speakers, the terminals also accepting banana plugs for worry-free non shorts. It also has a video plus left right audio input for an older VHS or Beta player, my noticing video inputs not always available on today's new receivers. It also has enough HDMI inputs for six options. I have a BlueRay player, VHS adapter (needed for the new 4k TVs), Cable Box, AppleTV and ROKU connected. There is one more available, the symbols for the inputs available when selecting from a remote. It has excellent FM reception (a simple antenna comes with the unit) and a wonderful easy to use on-screen menu to select what to watch, what to listen to, adjust sound effects and settings. It also allows calibration for many different speaker configurations. On top of it, the sound is excellent, the center channel seeming more clear than from my Onkyo. When doing the calibration, you can set the save to "engineering" of how the unit was set up in the lab. It has 100 watts per channel, plenty for a home theatre with an easy to use remote. The only thing missing from my Onkyo was a pass-through that lets you watch the HTML input without having to turn the unit on. Finally, the diversity of audio setting is simply amazing.

It does have good sound once you set up EQ and sound programs, but not out of the box. I have full size front and large surround and center with large Sub. However, Onkyo provides easier access to change audio EQ and sub volume without on screen interference. Also there's no real Sony app that I have found for controlling audio without interrrupting the screen -- something I miss from my Onkyo. However, HDMI 4k HDR and remote control work great with my Sony Bravia. Setup is easy.

My Sony 850 broke while doing a firmware upgrade forcing me to purchase a new receiver. We had purchased a 4K TV since getting the 850 so I decided to pick up this one. It was very easy to hook up since I only had to unplug everything from the back of the receiver and then plug them into the new one. Piece of cake. This receiver gave new life to my surround system and the picture is SO much better. Here’s a tip for great sounding bass for movies: read and learn about setting the pass-through values for your speakers. I struggled with enough bass for a long time before discovering this. I am not an audiophile (far from it) but having this unit makes me feel like one!

Most likely you're looking at this receiver because, like me, you have an older receiver you'd like to replace with up-to-date options. I felt this model had the best bang for the buck balance. The HDMI pass-throughs make for a cleaner wiring setup and offer more convenience since you can turn on the entire system through a single component. I'm sure plenty of people wish there were more HDMI ports but six should be sufficient for most mid-sized home theaters. The menus are easy to use. The calibration mic makes audio setup quick but there'll probably be some manual adjustment afterwards to get the sound field just right. The support for HDR, 4K, Dolby Atmos and other current technologies are definite bonuses. I can only comment on the general sound of the system as I have not yet upgraded my speakers to support Dolby Atmos. Definition seems good during movies as sound location from front-to-back seems strong. I find music playback with some of the surround sound profiles seem a little muddy so I sometimes end up going to stereo only to improve clarity, but that could just be personal preference. For the average sized home theater, this is a good sounding receiver with enough options to future-proof an evolving system for several years at a reasonable price.

I purchased this to match up with my new 4K UHD television and 4K UHD Blu-Ray player. This was a must to ensure the new 4K discs will play on the sound system when they require HDCP 2.2 standards. The sound is incredible, and the room sound set up microphone with the automated synchronization of this system makes setting up your sound to your room too simple. You cannot ask for much better for a consumer level system. Thanks!

I was very skeptical about buying a Sony A/V receiver like this DN1080 model, but after hooking it up (<15mins) and running through the setup, I was up and running. I have my Xbox One X connected and now setup for Dolby Atmos and WOW!! what a kicker receiver this is. I have searched and looked through various reviews and this Sony DN1080 model came up on many of them, but the only issue I have is that a 9.2 ch isn't available from Sony, at least in the appropriate price range because it would be on my shelf right now. I replace my older Denon AVR4000XS model just to have Dolby Atmos and this Sony beat it by a long stretch. I did have to buy up firing speakers because with Dolby Atmos you NEED to have height speakers or something shooting up to the ceiling if you don't have. I tried the Onkyo 9.2ch model and ran into issues that I had to return it. Then I thought, ok, most movies, shows, etc... are all in 5.1 channels anyway. Yes, you have the UHD movies on disc with 7.1 channels, but think about what Dolby Atmos is now. It's not channel specific anymore. It's object oriented and having a 5.1.2 configuration is pretty amazing and meets all your sound needs. If you have a very big room, then I can understand the need to additional channels, but it boils down to buy good quality speakers to go with your receiver and it will make the magic work. This receiver is a keeper for me until a 9.2 ch comes out so I can regain the other two surround speakers that are now only good to look at.

Sturdy, well built product being used to power a 5.2 system in a 30’ X 30’ square theater room. Primary use is home theater movie watching, secondarily sports on TV and gaming. As is always the case with home theater, your individual needs, preferences, space, and budget should dictate your selections. This receiver feeds two Polk S60’s as fronts, two S55’s as rear surround, a S30 center, and dual powered subwoofers. The dual subwoofer inputs was a major point in this units favor. I’m really just scratching the proverbial surface on this units functionality, but it’s clear that it meets and exceeds my fundamental needs. This Sony has plenty of power to drive home theater use and movie watching. With my setup, I can turn it up to about 44 out of 100 volume and physically feel the sound in my chest. Movie watching is loud, clear, and accurate. Of course, your speakers will definitely factor into this as well, but the unit demonstrates no struggles with driving fairly power hungry speakers for home theater use. Sound can be played very loud and very clear with little to no distortion. Again, the standard disclaimer would be that your speakers and source material factor into the overall performance quality as well. Only two issues I’d consider cons. Any time the unit goes into standby or shuts down, it will always default back to the first input which is “Blu Ray / DVD”. This is really a minor annoyance, but most will notice it. Literally any rest mode activity of any sort and you have to change back to your desired source. This usually also entails a few second delay as the unit comes out of rest and switches to the correct source. As an example, I might be gaming on the third HDMI out, It will go into rest when I step away, and the unit quickly defaults to “home” which is the first DVD input. Not a deal breaker by any means but worth noting. I have not been able to find a work around or setting on this as of yet. Second, I don’t find the unit to be the same caliber as older dedicated stereo music receivers when it comes to playing music specifically. Don’t get me wrong, this is a minor nitpick, and I think most know to buy a dedicated music unit if they are into purist musical reproduction. While a dedicated stereo music receiver might be a 10 out of 10 on music reproduction, I’d give this unit an 8 or 9 on music reproduction and 10 on everything else. With that said, this Sony excels at movie and TV sound reproduction as well as gaming on a PS4 or Xbox - again, 10 out of 10. I picked this unit up on sale, however, I’d deem it a very good bang for the buck buy at regular price.

Sony made an excellent receiver. More than enough power. It’s driving a Definitive 5.1 system and the sound is crystal clear. The menus are all A/V which are nice and the receiver was easy to calibrate with the included microphone. A couple of small hiccups. They don’t let you truly reassign the ports. So if you have an analog, a coaxial or HDMI all labeled Video 1, you can only use one of those ports. Also there is not a Phono input but the turntable has a line output also. The best part about the system that you can watch a movie the way it was meant to be watched.

I bought this receiver to replace an older model Sony I bought 18 years ago. Funny thing is they look almost identical from the front so no one even noticed the upgrade (especially the Mrs.). My old receiver had lost some functionality and gained some scratches and dings over the years but it played flawlessly to this day. I upgraded to keep the musical quality Sony is known for and to gain all of the newest features which are excellent. It's very easy to set up and even easier to operate. The power ratings are very close to what's listed and each feature adds more functionality t this unit. It's great for any level of user.

I was never a big fan of Sony receivers in the past but the ones they have been producing over the last few years or so have been much improved in terms of sound quality. As far as A/V receivers go this is as good as any that is out there. One important feature I like is the ability to completely shut off the front panel display lights. Not all receivers can do this, some, even with the main panel lights off still leave one or two bright lights blaring which is maddening when trying to watch films. The less lights, the better for me. One useless feature that I wish they would take away is the nearly worthless FM tuner. This uses some ridiculous proprietary hook up with only a skinny wire with nothing on the end of it for an antenna. Why even bother Sony? I would've much rather had a phono input or 10 more watts or SOMETHING other then this. Another thing is that you need to know how to set this up properly to get the best sound out of it which can take some time, otherwise you will not get the best this unit is capable of. That includes shutting off the useless sound enhancers like DSEE HX upscaling and using only the A.F.D. (automatic decoding) sound mode for movies and/or the Direct or Pure Direct modes for music (forget about all the other modes).

Purchased this receiver to get 4K pass thru from the Xbox One-S on new TV. Picture quality and sound quality are awesome, especially Dolby Atmos. (final scene in John Wick Ch-2 made my wife jump out of her seat). Set-up is fairly easy, except the receiver didn't want to connect to the internet, even though wireless would connect. The only solution was to completely wipe the home network and start over. Has some troubles determining the best audio output (Dolby etc) from Xbox or DirecTV signals. The front display is very subtle and can be dimmed (nice feature for watching movies). I actually liked the Onkyo better, but it's neon green, non-dimmable screen was a deal breaker. Best Buy needs to have the option to plug in and test the receivers in store.

The receiver comes with a small microphone that one sets where one wants the center of the sound to be and it adjusts all of the speaker levels for great surround sound. Takes but a few minutes. Also the inputs are labeled making source selection a snap. Much easier than other receivers we have owned.

I would recommend this to a friend
