This TV replaced an older Sony tv we have had for a while. The difference in pictures quality and features is amazing. It was easy to set up and we are learning how to do everything it is capable of.

The picture on the screen is amazing...didn't really think we needed to upgrade, but there is a definite quality improvement. Nothing like a Sony! Easy to install, instructions were great.

Great picture, fantastic colors and easy installation w/ wall mount. We don’t watch much but Netflix, so our needs are minimal for TV performance. Would rather watch through our direct plug in than the smart WiFi connection in the TV. Network is a little slow through the WiFi.

Bad image in dark scenes; Sony doesn't care

This TV has really bad black levels. Any scenes in games, movies, television shows, online videos, etc. will converge into mushy blackness. Bright images are great. so you're looking at 50/50 in picture quality. My review is 1/5 because of the Sony support that came with this problem TV. I bought this Bravia in April of 2017. I was told by the Best Buy sales rep that this model was perfect for my situation, because I was looking for a budget 4K TV and I wanted a TV that could do clear blacks on a screen; the salesman's response was that edge-lit was perfect for that. I had recently bought a Nintendo Switch, so I was only looking at vividly bright imagery and was happy with my purchase. Then I checked out the live action "Beauty and the Beast" movie on Blu ray. Turns out that film is set in a dark castle and you can't see anything on the Sony Bravia 800E. Sony support then proceeded to send me through task after task of troubleshooting options (each time creating a different event ID for me that would never carry over to a new support troubleshoot when the previous inevitably failed). I was told to factory reset, hard power-off the unit, was sent multiple configurations for settings (like even motion and clarity that have nothing to do with the brightness of the screen). So much time passed that I was unable to return the unit to Best Buy for a refund, so Sony suggested a replacement unit sent to me after I returned the "broken" unit to them. I obliged, and two months into this purchase, I received a replacement unit that did the exact same thing with dark images (on the smart TV apps and on all of the devices connected to it). I was sent through the same process online through troubleshooting support (similar configurations, factory reset, even a screen mirroring session that had no results either). While the second wave of troubleshooting emails were sent to me, I did some literature searching online, and found out that edge-lit LED backlighting is the worst for televisions, especially those that incorporate HDR (high dynamic range) settings. The Bravia 800E has edge-lit backlighting, which is why it's a "budget TV' at $850...it saves on cost for Sony. I also found that HDR doesn't have a standard so far, and companies can just slap "HDR" on their boxes when they have some way of increasing the output of either bright colors or dark blacks. I think this unit was one that excelled at bright colors and Sony left it at that as far as testing (reviews of this TV on Rtings.com shows that this model has terrible black levels on it). So I went through the same customer support, and explained my findings to Sony. "This is not the TV I'm looking for, I want something that could show dark images without turning the whole screen black. Can I have a refund?" It's August now and Sony has already replaced the TV once. They recommend having me return this second unit for another replacement (but this time, mention that this would be a one-time exchange and further issues could not be returned). I explained that my issue isn't going to be fixed with a replacement of the same model. I was then told that I could return my TV for store credit within Sony and use that to get a different model, either one that was the same price or a different one that would mean me paying the difference. I looked at their catalog, knowing that this edge-lit 800E series was the cheapest they had, and anything that might not have the same issues I'm having (e.g. a TV with full array or OLED backlighting) would cost way more than what I paid for this TV that doesn't function as a standard TV (something that produces a visible picture in light and dark). Then the support rep asked me to submit my receipt from my original purchase (the one from April) and he would put in a request to get a refund since I couldn't afford any higher end models from Sony. I sent proof of the TV I bought 4 months ago. I received a phone call the next day where I was informed that I had the option to return the TV for a replacement unit (one time exchange noted again). I asked what happened to my request for a refund. I was put on hold for 23 minutes, and then greeted by a manager who informed me that I could not receive a refund and that I could take the exchange or return the TV for an upgraded model with the cost difference put on me. I said the exchange wouldn't fix my problem and I couldn't afford any higher model units from Sony (that was the point of getting the 'cheapest' one). So they asked if they could close my case since I wasn't taking the solutions they'd given me. I said to close it, and that I was not satisfied or okay with the results. I still have this TV. The cost of $850 for a budget TV that doesn't work properly has put me in a bind because I cannot justify buying a replacement model from somewhere else currently. So I just grind my teeth anytime I watch something on this unit for now; basically, I don't watch or play much of anything because of the uncomfortable situation Sony put me in as a consumer.

I initially bought this as a replacement for an older 1080p set used in the bedroom. I also bought a XBR75X940E as our main set, and honestly after watching the 75" for an evening we decided to watch a show on THIS television... while the picture was okay, it could not touch the 940E's dynamic range or quality (heck, this 50" cost 1/5 of the big set... there IS a difference). I ultimately returned this and upgraded to a XBR55X900E, albeit more expensive than this 50' set. If your looking for an economical 50" and haven't spoiled yourself with the bleeding edge stuff, this is a fantastic offering. The picture is very good, the quality (it IS a Sony after all) is fantastic... it just turned out not to be exactly what I wanted however.

Was debating between Sony and Samsung for my new bedroom tv. Walked into the Eden Prairie Best Buy, as they were the one's with the tv's on display. After spending some time looking at picture quality, price and options, I picked the Sony. What a picture--clear, bright and clean. Love the choice I made. Also want to say that the people I talked to there were great and took the time to talk to you. Thanks.

This TV has great picture quality. The colors are more vibrant than any TV I've owned before. Fast motion is fluid. My only complaint is that the onboard processor sometimes lags a bit and takes a moment to respond (particularly when first turned on and when streaming). All in all I really love this TV and I'm glad I picked it.

    Excellent 4k Gaming TV

After I decided to upgrade my gaming consoles to PS4 pro and Xbox One X, I found I needed a 4K TV to release these two beasts. Although the Xbox One X is not released yet and I am still using my first generation of Xbox One, the game experience turned out to be stunning. With the HDR enabled, the viewing experience from a Xbox One game (e.g. For a Horizon 3) increases significantly, while a PS4 pro game (e.g. Uncharted 4) becomes ridiculous awesome. I also found the process to the game is slightly faster than my old HDTV. Overall, I am very happy with this upgrade. I am not a big TV fan, and my local cable television provider does not provide any 4K program, so I cannot say if the TV viewing experience is good or not. If you are just going to get a 4K TV to play video games, I would definitely recommend this 800E model over Sony's 900E series.

The salesperson at Best Buy suggested the SONY 49" 4K HDTV because he had just purchased one and loved it. I compared the SONY with the other TVs in the store and liked the picture quality much better. We have had the TV for about 3 weeks and I could not be happier. We came back to Best Buy and told our salesman how happy we were with the TV - we then proceeded to buy a new cell phone for my wife. Ironically we purchased the same phone that our salesman bought recently.

As usual, Sony has produced a smart tv that outshines most others for picture clarity, contrast and brilliant color. Even the blacks are really black! Joining our WiFi network was easy as was connecting Apple TV and the sound bar I purchased. Using Netflix and Amazon Video was also a snap. I’m very happy with this purchase.
