False 4K 120hz Advertising But Great Mid-Range TV

DO NOT buy this TV if 4K/120hz is your priority. Let me start by saying I am a dedicated Best Buy shopper for well over a decade. I waited a long time to write this review, but Sony hasn't given me (or X900H owners, in general) much confidence in their customer support. Sure HDMI 2.1 has had a buggy rollout across the industry, but there has been little to no update from Sony if the blurry 4K 120hz on this TV will ever be fixed. There seems to be some kind of bandwidth limitation either within the SoC or HDMI switcher. Not sure if the long-promised update with VRR/ALLM will ever come, and if it will even fix the issue. For all we know Android 11 may be the solution ... so buyer beware. I attached a photo below demonstrating the difference between the 2020 and 2021 versions of this model (although I would also like to note that the 2021 version does make sacrifice in other areas in order to deliver better 4K/120hz). It just doesn't seem like manufacturers have caught up with the technology. Aside from some bugs here and there, this TV is the BEST bang for your buck. Paired with a PS5, I'm amazed at the picture quality and detail. I had to tweak the settings a bit to suit my preferences, but I have no regrets about this purchase. The only upgrade to this TV would be to go OLED, but the very minor differences certainly don't warrant paying twice what you would for this set.

My first sony tv and i LOVE IT! I usually buy Samsung tv's but this time I want it to try something different. It took me a while to get use to the Deep blacks as my previous tv lack richness in that department. Love gamming on this tv as the colors are more beautiful than my Alienware monitor" and that's saying alot!. Did I mention its got 120Hz? Over all this is a step up quality tv. Almost forgot, apps on this tv are incredibly FAST!

I thought I might be bothered by the silver trim on this TV, but I don't notice it at all. It's really thin and brushed metal, so not cheap looking The quality of the TV is great. I did look up some adjustments to make to the picture quality to get the best viewing and it looks great. We have it in a bright room and can easily see the picture all day. I keep learning more about the buttons on the remote and how they match up to my cable box. Lots of integration and easy to setup.

We walked into the showroom to look at Samsung TVs but selected the 55” Sony Class X900H instead. Unfortunately, it was out of stock. When the price dropped on the 65”, we decided to go larger. The picture is crisp, color is exceptional and it’s easy to mount. Set up was self explanatory and we didn’t have any issues. Great purchase!

So I bought this during the labor day sale and success then been enjoying this great tv . As for the picture quality it's absolutely great and for the menu of settings access is pretty good and easy I did go through some of the videos available online for setting up the settings for best picture quality but trust me the settings even out of the box are great and you may not really need to do anything. Now as for Android tv as an os itself this is my first experience and whatever optimization Sony has done with it leaves the user experience smooth. For Netflix it has a separate calibrated picture mode itself which Netflix and Sony have worked out and tbh I don't find it any different then the Dolby vision bright mode. The tv also can get pretty loud on its own and am not sure if it requires any sound bar until unless one is a real enthusiast of those perfect sound quality. Post the November update it has the game mode and supports VRR but I need to buy a console to really great those functionalities.

    Vertical banding very disappointing

I will start off by saying this TV has great resolution and fantastic, vibrant color. HDR is plenty bright and content is amazing. There are, however, two issues I have with this TV, one minor and one major. The first issue which is minor is the motion artifacts I get occasionally. It’s almost like the TV can’t keep up with the fast motion of a scene and it flutters (ie not smooth). I quickly go into settings, change the picture mode for a few seconds, then change it back to the original picture mode and the issue resolves itself. I’m hoping a future software update resolves this. The major issue I have with the TV is the vertical banding that is apparent in ALL content, from SD up to 4K HDR. It is an issue in the manufacturing of the TV that has to do with the separate backlighting zones which makes the screen appear like a jail cell during solid color scenes such as a blue sky or snowy field. Based off all the reviews I’ve read it only effects the 65” model for some reason. This is very distracting and very disappointing for a TV that costs close to $1600. I have attached a picture of this effect.

      Hi Danimal23,

Thank you for purchasing the X900H Ultra HD Smart TV.

We’re sorry to hear you are experiencing some minor and major issues where the TV shows a vertical banding. We’d love to help you troubleshoot your problem by isolating your sources and understanding your connections. In the meantime, we recommend trying the following steps below.

On the supplied remote control, press the HOME button. If the lines appear on the menu screen, proceed to the next step.
      Perform a power reset.
Press the HOME button again to display the menu screen.
If no lines are visible on the menu screen after power reset, other external sources (such as cable or satellite box, internet video device, or other devices like a DVD player) or cable connections could be the cause of the issue.

Additional steps are available on the link below.

I bought and returned several tvs and just about gave up until finally finding the perfect TV. In few words: THIS THING IS AMAZING!! I tested it using multiple movies (both older movies and recent to check the clarity) and the TV does a great job at displaying a clear, enjoyable, and glitch free experience for anyone looking to get the best bang for your buck. I took pictures of Iron Man 2 while it played (did not pause movie for better illustration) and it did very well at maintaining clarity during action sequences as well as illuminate the screen with perfect colors and brightness. I have not tested it using a game console but have a feeling it will do fine.

This TV is so pretty! I’m super picky about TVs and I’ve wanted a 900 series for awhile. Scored a great deal on mine and couldn’t be much happier. With just slight adjustments to the picture settings, you’ll have a banging picture. Great for gaming too, RDR2 has never looked so good. Only thing I miss coming from an LG was the cool screen that incorporated and could control my smart things for the Tv screen. But the UI on this tv is fast and snappy. Unfortunately it’s an andorid Tv in an all Apple home but, the Sony picture is so mesmerizing that we forget all about it.

    Banding Issues

    |
    |
Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed.

I bought this set as an alternative to the Vizio p65qx-h1 (which has apparently fallen off the face of the earth, and Vizio remains radio silent on release information). Given the feedback that has been coming from the 75 inch model of the Vizio, and some lackluster reviews for the p65q9-h1 (which has been released); I figured it would be safer to go with Sony for this TV purchase. Having said that, I respect the Sony brand name and had really high hopes for this display. I will say that use and setup of the display is great. It probably has the snappiest Android TV interface I have experienced. Color out of the box looks great and is even better following RTINGS.com configuration guide. HDR content looks great as well. Unfortunately, it appears that the 65" model is plagued with banding issues. Numerous reports on RTINGS.com and Reddit confirm this. It appears that wall mounting the unit exacerbates the level of banding you may see. Further, applying any tilt to the mount makes the banding even more visible. On my display, the banding is only really visible on bright scenes( IE sunny outdoor shots with blue skies, white screens, or bright games like Fall Guys). In these environments you will see vertical bars across the whole display, which can be jarring and take your focus off of the content. I have tried different inputs and every variety of setting changes, and the banding has stayed. Removing the tilt from the wall mount did reduce the banding somewhat, it seems like the display was designed to be mounted at a flush 90 degree angle (or not mounted at all). Other users have reported seeing the banding in fast action content. Fortunately, my display is not showing any signs of that. If that were the case, I would have already gone through the hassle of initiating a return. Where my unit is only showing the banding in really bright scenes, I have decided to hold on to it for the current point in time. Having said that, I don't think any level of defect is acceptable on a $1600 TV. I am not sure if this is a manufacturing issue, or what is the cause. But once you see the banding, it is really hard to not see it in scenes. If you are sensitive to such things, I advise you to purchase an alternative set; or the 55" model (which apparently has way less reports of these banding issues). For reference I have included a picture of the display mounted at 90 degrees, in a curtain drawn room. You will see the banding (that looks like jail bars across the screen) prevalent.

      Hi JimLahey,

Thank you for choosing and purchasing our Sony X900H Ultra HD Smart TV.

We are glad that you like the setup display. We are also sorry to hear you are experiencing some banding issues. We’d love to help you troubleshoot your problem.

For lines on the screen (vertical or horizontal lines, bands) please try the following steps below.

On the supplied remote control, press the HOME button. If the lines appear on the menu screen, proceed to the next step.
      Perform a power reset.
      Turn off your TV.
      Unplug the AC power cord.
Leave your TV unplugged for two minutes, then plug it back in.
      Turn on your TV.
Press the HOME button again to display the menu screen.
If no lines are visible on the menu screen after power reset, other external sources (such as cable or satellite box, internet video device, or other devices like a DVD player) or cable connections could be the cause of the issue. Check the following to try to resolve the issue:
Turn off any electrical or battery-operated devices that may create radio frequency (RF) interference.
Adjust the antenna direction and location.
Nearby mountain or tall buildings that reflect the broadcast signals may cause ghosting in the picture.
Check if the cable is firmly connected to the TV and the connected device and make sure it is not loose.
Use a spare cable to replace the currently used one and see if the situation will improve.
Use another input terminal of the TV.

This is an outstanding 4K TV. I am really impressed with how beautiful and crisp the picture is with deep blacks. I watch a lot of sports and it handles fast action sports really well. I initially got a 65" LG Nanocell but wasn't pleased with its upscaling performance and had to exchange it for this TV. If you are not ready to shell out the big bucks on an OLED TV then this is a fantastic alternative. I love the TV!!

I am a movie watcher so I focus on how good the picture will look and I can say so far it meets the standard. I think once I play with the settings it will get even better. The sound of the Tv does not Wow me at all which is due to me being use to my JBL sound-bar. So once I connect my sound-bar to this Tv it will be even better. This date I have not tried gaming yet still waiting on PS5 lol. Overall it’s a good TV.

GREAT picture with good clear sound! Mounted this in my large high ceiling great room/living room at my new house. The style/color/shape of the TV doesn't detract from the decore and blends right in. BTW: This sucker is HEAVY..I had to get 2 friends to help me mount it on the wall!!! I have another Sony but, an older/lower spec model...this one blows that away as well as all the other brands that I have around the house. Also, I got a great "black Friday" price on this unit and the usual great service during the pickup of the TV. I am a happy camper, and more importantly..my wife is very happy with the TV that is in her primary viewing space.
