Horrible GUI, takes forever to try to work, could be good but is poorly executed. Historical problems with its board and SONY should execute a recall and fix. Stick to a receiver and speakers.

Ok please keep in mind this will not replace an expensive A/V receiver with surround sound speakers. But if you want a very simple set up with minimum components and great sound, this sound bar may be for you. I am over the top happy with this sound bar, from the build quality of the speakers and sub themselves to the dramatic sound that fills the room in a explosive scene of a movie. You can feel what your watching. Setup was a breeze, two power cords, two HDMI's and your up and running. The wireless sub synced to the soundbar automatically. This is the definition of a great plug and play sound system.

      Hi Sdperez,

Thank you for your review. We are really sorry if the manual of our HTST5000 did not live up to your expectations and that you are having issues with it. We are not sure on what TV brand/model you have this soundbar connected to. However, you may try following our instructional video for information on how to connect our HTST5000 to your TV properly:
      https://www.sony.com/external-link?url=https%3A%2F%2Fyoutu.be%2FYzNme2hjcFc

This soundbar was designed to deliver an immersive, cinematic audio experience at home with three-dimensional surround sound. And the 7.1.2 speaker channels completely envelop you in sound, even from above. 800W of power and 2 levels of vocal enhancement will ensure you don’t miss a moment of your content.

You may try adjusting the gain in the setup menu to enhance your listening experience. In the home menu, go to setup>Speaker Settings>Level and you can set the level for your front speakers, Height speakers, and subwoofer. You may also want to set the distance to ensure the best surround sound. For reference, please visit page 46 of this link:

We needed to downsize our stereo due to the size of our family room. After thorough investigation, I decided on the Sony 5000 and have not been disappointed. The 800 watt subwoofer rattles the 15' x 25' room and the Dolby Atmos feature is spectacular! Even at lower volumes, the sound is very clear and full. It is easy to setup. I was up and running in less than 1/2 hour. I am currently using a 4K Apple TV for my movies, music, and Direct TV Now as my service provider. I highly recommend the Sony 5000.

I own a lot of Sony products. A lot. The one thing I have learned is that they always have their quirks. The HTS-5000 is right in-line with those expectations. The unboxing and setup of the soundbar and accompanying sub was crazy simple. The sub is wireless and the soundbar immediately found it when I powered on the unit. After connecting it to me ShieldTV and tweaking some of the input settings to allow for 4K HDR content I was off and running. I jumped into my Plex library and gave Batman v Superman a go as it is Atmos content. My immediate reaction was "Whoa!" as I was enveloped in sound. Full disclosure, I installed this unit in my bedroom as I have a full 7.2.4 system in my living room with all discrete speakers. So I know what Atmos should sound like. The soundbar gave a reasonable facsimile of Atmos through the reflection of sound. The front stage was clear and articulate, but the "simulated" surrounds had a tendency to sound a little muddy. The sub is quite strong if not a bit one note. Works well for movies, but for music it is a questionable choice. The overall presentation was fun, but the price of this system kept popping up in my head as I listened. Plus, the lack of DTS/DTS:X compatibility really jumps out. For the money being asked you could assemble a system with true discrete speakers and DTS compatibility. I suppose though if you are looking for something to stick in a bedroom that offers above average sound than the HTS-5000 will fit the bill. I imagine that you could probably get pretty close for quite a bit less money and that is the real problem here. I just don't think I could recommend this system at this price point. If you can find it for significantly less than I say go for it.

I am a big Sony fan and was very excited for this sound bar. After setting it up, I found that (like most sound systems) there is extensive setup to be done to get the soundbar sounding as it should. After messing with various settings, it sounds great. Not amazing, but great. Pros: -Loud volume. -Sound quality is great when in Dolby TrueHD mode. -4k with HDR pass-through looks great. -Sub sounds excellent. -Wi-Fi music services work great. Cons: -Dialogue is still fairly difficult to hear, even with changing the voice settings. -Setup was not very straightforward and items like "DRC" aren't explained very well as far as what they do when turning them on or off. -Expensive. Overall, this sound bar is not worth it for full retail price. If it was priced comparatively to the HT-NT5, then it is totally worth it. But at full price, I cannot recommend this sound bar. If it drops in price, I will edit my review to reflect that.

    The sound is unreal

I finally decided to purchase this soundbar after doing a lot of research on what I thought would be the best Dolby Atmos experience for me and WOW!!! I am completely blown away. After seeing a movie at a Dolby Cinema I knew I had to get that same booming and traveling sound at home. I popped in IT (2017) on 4k disc to test the Dolby Atmos effects and right away the sub started shaking the entire room and sound was coming from every corner. Then I realized it wasn't even transmitting Dolby Atmos, but instead DTS. After searching online how to fix it I realized when you press the display button on the soundbar remote it shows you what sound is being transmitted on the front-facing LED. If the 4k disc supports Dolby Atmos it will have its own separate audio channel on the disc you have to choose. That's when the sound started coming from all over the room and hitting you from the ceiling. Reviewers who are saying this is a great soundbar but doesn't offer the same effects as a surround sound system probably don't have it set up correctly or have their distances set correctly. This soundbar does a great job of giving you the illusion that there are speakers all around you and I don't regret this purchase one bit. Get it while it's still on sale!

The Only Sound Bar Of Its Status

Great sound bar. Weighs quite a bit and that's fine with me. I like the heavy quality feel. Looks sleek too. It's the only sound bar that provides DTS-X and all of the important audio codexs that most others won't provide. The clarity of voices and dialogue this sound bar generates is absolutely amazing. It does a great job of separating speech, music and explosions without sounding muddled. The subwoofer is an absolute beast. Extremely powerful. Of course, in the settings, you can actually adjust voice levels, subwoofers levels and Atmos speakers based on the size of your room and where you sit. Sound bar is on the thick side so it will block your TVs sensor if places in front of it. Cleverly enough, the sound bar has built in IR passthrough so you can use your remote through it. As far as the Atmos speakers go, when they work they work. I've tested lots of 4K discs that support Atmos sound and most of the time I couldn't hear that overhead sensation. But when it happens, it's absolutely incredible. Overall, this sound bar does an amazing job filling the room with clean and clear audio. Even without Dolby Atmos, I greatly enjoy this sound bar for listening to all kinds of media.

The audio from this sound bar far exceeds anything I have ever heard from a sound bar previously. It is crystal clear and provides true surround sound (if you set it up correctly following the directions.) I noticed from other reviews that they had trouble as well setting it up on non-Sony TV. After 3 days of trying I have still not been able to get my LG tv to connect to the Sound Bar through the HDMI ARC port. It does work great though through the optical audio input and plugging the devices directly to the tv rather than the sound bar. Going to keep working on trying to connect it through ARC so that I can get the full affect - probably going to call Geek Squad and see if they can give some help.

This is a bit tough, this soundbar sounds great, but doesn’t live up to it’s claim and comes in at such a high price. Maybe if you have an ideal small space it can good. Bottomline, if you’re looking for immersive surround, then this isn’t it. While the sound quality is quite impressive, at best this is a 3.1.2 front surround speaker. It also lacks DTS support, which is unacceptable for such a premium product. Even with good performance, great build quality, and ease of use, the high price tag is a hard sell. Claiming 7.1.2 at such high price, I expected to have better sound bouncing technology or wireless satellite speakers. However, if you need Atmos for a small space and don’t mind the lack of immersion, and have cash to spare, then you might be happy with the sound this thing can put out. Good: -Great sounds -Build quality is solid and hefty -Subwoofer is good -Easy to setup and use -Support standard 4k features, sound upscaling, and pass through Bad: -Not immersive “7.1.2” -No DTS support -Remote too simple and feels cheap -Price -Voices can sound quiet during movies Set up: Setting up is easy. There’s 3 HDMI outs and ethernet port, which is pretty nice for a soundbar. Once connected, you can run easy setup to configure the network and go into the setup menu to set your levels and distances of your ceiling. It may be too simple. You can set the levels of the front as a whole, upfiring speakers, and the sub. Distance can only be set up with the ceiling speakers. There’s no calibration mic to use. Functions: Everything is quite easy to use. You mostly just have to select the input and sound field of your choice. The menus are easy to navigate and options are there as they should with each options explaining what it does. If anything, I would say the remote is too simple. You have to cycle through all the different sound fields with a single button and there’s two buttons to cycle through the inputs. I tried all the functions except for the streaming services and chomecast, and all worked well. Performance: I had low expectation that this soundbar would live up to it’s claim of full “immersive, cinematic audio,” and unfortunately I was right. It is capable of producing full and deep sounds rivaling bigger speakers, but it is not a full immersive 7.1.2 surround. It’s 3.1.2, with the Atmos speakers bouncing sound on the ceiling that will give you a sense of sound coming from high front speakers rather than on directly above you. There’s no sense that sound is coming from the sides or rear. It would take an ideal setup, which is a small enclosed space with low ceilings, in order for the sound to bounce properly. For movies, I started out with Mad Max Fury Road, and the explosions were loud and booming. The subwoofer packed quite a punch for one that small. The whizzing sounds were audible from side to side, but mostly from the front and not immersive. The vocals were low on the default setting, and turning on the “Voice” option helped but it muddled the other sounds a bit. Next I tried Mission Impossible Rogue Nation, and again was not impressed. The biggest issue here is that this soundbar doesn’t decode DTS. I tried Deadpool, and it was being outputted as Linear PCM. That’s a major issue as many movies are DTS and is not acceptable in a modern sound system. I’ve had 3 receivers in the last 10 years, including Sony latest Atmos receiver, that decodes DTS. Music actually sound fine to me. I’m not a big enough audiophile to be able to discern the differences between normal and the upscaled near hi-res music. Soundstage was good, vocals were clear, and mids and lows were fine to me. Streaming with bluetooth is simple and the quality is as expected from wireless. Playing from USB produced was consistent and quite nice. I just can’t fully recommend this. Yes the sound is really good, and had this been a typical front firing soundbar at a lower cost, or have included satellite speakers, then I would have given it 5 stars. There are other soundbars out there that can produced a better immersive experience. At this price, you could buy an entry level Atmos receiver and decent speakers that will give you real surround sound.
