    Disappointing

Let me start with the biggest problem I have with the sound bar. The sound is often not synced with the image on the television (it’s also a Sony). It’s slightly off. The sound bar has a delay adjustment, but there was nothing I could do to get it exactly right. It’s also not consistent. I can adjust one day, then come back the next day and it’s off at that setting so I have to set it back to where it was originally. Also, I could not set this up hooking my components into the sound bar. The ARC HDMI connection kept messing up—the picture would just disappear and it the TV would not recognize a connection. The Best Buy representative told me that ARC can be quirky. So now I have it hooked up optically and my components hooked up up to the television. As for the sound, it’s really good, but it doesn’t sound any better than the older and less expensive Bose system it replaced. I really regret this purchase. I could have gotten much better for much less.

Awesome sound bar, when it works. However, the frequency of the subwoofer cutting out is appalling and frustrating. Regardless of the connectivity settings/modes, secure or not, the signal going to the subwoofer would experience interference creating a loud popping noise. Tried every ccombination possible. I can't do anything about the signal strength of my neighbors routers, operating frequencies, and traffic causing interference. Maybe when a newer version of this system comes out with updated communications/firmware, I'd try it again.

    Just Poor All Around

I've owned this sound bar for around a year and a half now, so its safe to say I've tried the resets, turning things off, unplugging, and so on. For starters I was sold on this unit by an in store demo. Now I don't know if Best Buy designs their stores with acoustics in mind or maybe they just have a hidden sound wall behind their displays but this sounded absolutely amazing in store.........IN STORE. My package was new in box from the store. So not a returned item or missing box type deal. When I got home I set everything up, I did measurements and configured speaker distances and life was great.........for a few days. After over a year of watching videos, set up secrets, tuning tips, and the like the audio never reached the level of the in store demo. Slight disappointment but not a deal breaker. About 2 weeks in to ownership is when I first realized I made a mistake. For starters any time the unit is power cycled it automatically reverts the input back to TV. This is the number one thing I hate about this unit (of its normal operating procedures). No matter what input turns the unit on or off it always reverts back to the TV input. So if you have an Apple TV on HDMI 2 and you turn on the system the TV starts, Apple TV starts, the sound turns on and automatically goes to the input that turned it on ( this is the part I hate) and then reverts back to the TV input. Now that wouldn't be a huge issue if I hadn't already finished my cable management and wall mounted my TV I could have ran my wiring differently if I would have known this from the start. Now the real problem started about a month in to ownership. Once my system all power cycles on the sound bar will kill all video feed (and occasionally audio as well) and not let any signals pass. It doesn't matter if you switch inputs it will continuously revert back to the TV input and only display a black screen. I usually takes 8-10 power cycles to get it to where it will process signals again. Thankfully I purchased the extended warranty and now that my house has sold and i have broken down my entertainment area this sound bar is on a one way trip back to Best Buy. So all in all I'm sorry if you've read this far but the short version is DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT. Thank you

Blocks wifi signal of nearby router & overpriced

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Listened in Best Buy and seemed decent. Found a used local one for $600. My Xfinity modem/router was 3 feet away from the sub and speaker and when I turned on the Sony the wifi signal dropped to nothing (used speed test site), then turned the Sony off and wifi speed jumps right back up to normal. Wow Sony, how did this ever get released? Many gamers etc have the router right in the TV/AV area for ethernet connections. I'm sure the rental Xfinity router isn't great so maybe a better stand-alone router would be better but with this potential issue I'd avoid this Sony. The sound quality is good but too bright and a bit harsh. The 3D surround mode sounded the best by far for music. Really wish it had adjustable EQ besides the sound field modes (for the price it should have this). However, for the price (was $1200 retail in Dec but now up to $1500 wow!) this is not worth it at all. I sold mine and bought KEF Q150 bookshelf speakers for $300 (supposedly a sale from reg $600 in Nov/Dec but still that price) and with my older Sony ES receiver the sound is WAY better than the Sony sound bar. I highly recommend the Q150 especially for the price - lots of bass too. Even with a cheap AV receiver the Q150's should sound way better than this Sony so you just can't begin to justify the price they are asking. The onscreen interface also feels very last-generation and outdated. Also the long boot time when turning on is annoying (like 10+ seconds) as you expect the TV sound to just come on right away. Switching modes was a bit laggy/glitchy too. The sub is hugely powerful and plenty even on 2 out of 10. I also listened to the B&W, Sonos & Bose sound bars but now think the Q150's and a receiver are a far cheaper and better solution. Only get a sounder if space and simplicity are critical.

      Hi Jeff,

We regret to hear that you already replaced your HTST5000 soundbar because it didn't live up to your expectations. It is recommended to install the latest software version of the soundbar for optimum performance.

Please take note that your wireless connection's speed, even with excellent signal strength, can be 30-50% slower compared to wired connections. The disparity between wired and Wi-Fi® performance is due to several reasons including additional network protocol overhead, radio interference, physical obstructions between devices, and decreasing signal strength with distance. In addition, as more devices communicate on the network simultaneously, their performance will also decrease. Whenever possible, always use a wired connection for best performance.

Sony takes all feedback seriously. Rest assured that this will help us improve the quality and performance of our products. Thanks for sharing your review and we hope you consider Sony in your future purchase.

Never worked right/ worst customer service by Sony

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

These speakers are the worst most expensive purchase I have ever bought. Initially I was really happy with it but than the problems started to happen after just the 3 months of use. They would not connect and play any sounds. I called Sony and they were really nice about it first and helped me with sending them for repair. I ship for repair and they sent it back right in 2 days. I was like wow that’s really fast service. But when I get them back they don’t even turn on anymore. I called the Sony back and explained what happened. I requested them to have it replaced because clearly it a faulty unit. But the rep tells me that they don’t replace the home entertainment units because Under warranty I can only get repairs. Which was a lie I realized after I read the warranty paper for the unit. And the rep pretty much told me that I am stuck with a $1500 speakers if they don’t work after constantly repairing it. I had the worst experience and will never again buy anything from Sony.

    Subwoofer randomly disconnects.

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have been having issues with the sub, it randomly disconnecting for a few seconds then comes back. I wish there was a wired option for it. I'm not sure if it's because I'm in an apartment building with a lot of random wifi signals around or what, but it's really annoying. This seems to be a common issue, unfortunately. The sound is fine, it's definitely not as good as a real sound setup with dedicated speakers around you, but for the price I'm not that happy with it.

I'm male 72yrs of age--been an audiophile most of my life--the top firing driver is a gimmick--the last thing to hear sound is your ears!! the room hears it first----,mids,bass etc are non directional- with the exception of the highs(tweeters)the tweeters fire out sound like a pea shooter--very directional-save your money--buy a cheaper sony like the htnt5--all the sound you will ever need(or hear)--AFTER the room decides what you will hear

    Total Disappointment

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

We had issues with the sound bar from day 1. We were told to upgrade the HDMI cable, which we did, and still had issues. We've always had staticy sound and issues with higher pitch tones like flutes. We bought it as a package with the Sony X900F TV which we are now finding out has issues with Dolby Vision. We were hoping that updates would fix the issues with both products but no. Definitely do not recommend. There are better products out there. It's just sad that we wasted 3 years trying to get it just right only to find out that Sony won't do anything about it. Live and learn. If you have issues out of the gate return it immediately.

You can buy better for cheaper. I am surprised that sony released this product. It is a buggy mess and firmware updates are few and far between. When it works it sounds good but mostly you wrestle with it. If are expecting a true surround sound experience you won't get one. Just pass on this junk, do yourself a favor.

It’s not Bose! It has good sound but half the sound that a Bose 3 speaker system puts out. Over priced sound bar with a under powered sub. After all the reviews I was very disappointed. I have a large room and it can’t fill it.

      Hi Steven,

Thank you for sharing your feedback on using your HTST5000. We're sorry if you find the sound quality not as good as your Bose 3 speaker system. This soundbar actually features Sound Effect which lets you enjoy pre-programmed sound effects that are tailored to different kinds of sound sources. Take your pick from ClearAudio+, 3D Surround, Movie, Music, Game Studio, Sports, and Standard, and use subwoofer control to fine tune your viewing experience. With 7.2.1 channels and Dolby Atmos® support, the ST-5000 delivers cinematic three-dimensional surround sound to fill your home.

You can also adjust the gain in the setup menu. In the home menu go to setup>Speaker Settings>Level and you can set the level for your front speakers, Height speakers and subwoofer. To obtain and fill your room with good surround sound, we also recommend setting the speakers distance from your listening position and their output level, ceiling height, and remove obstructions. Soundbar was great until it became totally unresponsive. Sony was no help because it was 3 months past their warranty. Going to have to spend major money to get repaired on my own. If you take a chance on it, spring for the Best Buy extended warranty. Buyer beware.
