This Sony destroys my Marantz SR5008 receiver that I purchased over a year ago from Best Buy and now has HDMI issues. I never knew my Polk towers and surrounds could sound this good and the clarity is astounding. The Marantz is the first receiver I've purchased outside the Sony realm and I have regretted it daily. They say the Marantz is good for music? What a joke! This Sony 1050 produces music bliss. The only thing I like better about the Marantz was the full EQ built into it. I'll hope for no HDMI handshake issues that some have had with this model, but right now it's fantastic! Thank you Sony for a great piece of equipment.

Worthwhile receiver, especially at great price

I had my eye on this receiver, as a replacement for one that had gone bad recently. It just so happened, that there was a price drop/sale, a week after I needed a replacement, so the timing was perfect. I also have a 1040 and love both of them equally. The only drawback with Sony receivers is, setup is not ideal if one isn't connecting this to a monitor or TV. The onscreen setup is relatively easy to navigate, for proper setup, but when I initially purchased, I didn't have my home theater projector set up properly in order to see the onscreen setup guide. So, getting through the menus was a task and a half. For that reason alone, I give this 4 out of 5 stars. Now, for those that are looking for a mid-priced receiver, I'd say it's worth the $599 that it costs, but keep an eye out for another price drop. Once it goes on sale, it's a definitely "must have." Only thing remaining is to add a secondary subwoofer, for me. Since most audio on movies and TV aren't made for anything more than 7.2 right now, I'd say that this is a better bang for the buck than purchasing a 9.2 or more. For audiophiles and people who are really looking to have a lot of power, I'd say this should only be your choice, if budget is a question. Overall, the receiver works perfectly with the Sony satelite speakers I had laying around. For those that have non-Sony speakers, no need to worry either. I have Onkyo speakers connected to my 1040, so there shouldn't be any issues with this model either, since it's just a slight upgrade from the 1040.

We purchased the stereo to use for our work place to play music for our patrons and initially it worked great. We loved that we could even play music off our smart phones as well. However, after a month of use we noticed small glitches in the stereo, like the USB input was unresponsive, and also that at time the stereo would stop responding all together so we would have to unplug it from the wall and reset it. When we tried to return it to the manufacturer our boss couldn't even get a refund because he never even got a call back from them! I usually really love Sony products but I was very disappointed after this experience.

Hello MO555! We apologize for the inconvenience you have gone through while using this unit and would like to suggest to try resetting the receiver back to factory default settings by following these steps: 1 -Turn off the receiver. 2. Hold down the POWER button on the receiver for 5 seconds. [CLEARING] appears on the display panel for a while, then changes to [CLEARED!]. 3 - release the POWER button. Receiver sounds great, is easy to setup. Big improvement from my old receiver. Integrates very nicely with a sony tv - automatically switches between internal and external speaker when the receiver is turned on.

Zone 2 speakers won't play HDMI inputs
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
I'm not an audiophile, but the receiver works properly for zone 1 speakers. I wish it had an option for acting as an amp for a non-powered sub woofer, but I got an external subwoofer amp. My main gripe is that Zone 2 speakers cannot play inputs from an HDMI source such as a Blu-ray or cable box. No where can I find any reference to that limitation in the manuals, but Sony 2nd level phone support confirmed it. To be clear, I configured the receiver to run my zone 2 patio speakers separately from my inside 3/2.1 speakers. The zone 2 speakers will play AM/FM radio, but not my HDMI Blu-ray CD player. Sony told me that only analog RCA cables would work. What modern Blu-ray uses analog cables nowadays? I suppose I'll have to buy a cheap CD player and hook it up with RCA cables. For that reason alone I won't recommend this Receiver.

I purchased this receiver to replace a receiver I purchased in 20011 during Black Friday (payed about $200). It was ok for years but thought it was time to upgrade... WOW is this receiver great! Very easy to use and set up. Finding the manual online is a little bit of a challenge but once you get the feel for the remote and how it all works... very easy and the sound and features are awesome.

I upgraded my AV receiver to match a new HDTV and I am very happy with this Sony unit. The setup was fast including using the supplied microphone to automate the calibration of my 5.1 speakers. I am very happy with the power and sound quality as well as the abundance of wireless features. I have yet to explore all these bells and whistles yet.

Great for movies not so much for music

This is a great receiver for movies but it lacks when it comes to music. I've had this receiver for six months and I've tried lots of different settings and can't find one that works for me.
I'm playing it thru SS-CS3 front SS-CS5 side and rear SS-CS8 center and a SA-CS9 subwoofer speakers. Not a bad system I think but it just doesn't cut it for music not even the SACD cd don't sound that good.
Sony any sound settings you can suggest?

No need to spend thousand bucks!! Im Super Happy with it. oh and BTW I bought a Magnolia Denon receiver to compare them and the SONY fulfill all my needs!!

can't believe the trouble i've had with this unit, i have wireless internet, sat tv and a blu ray player, all connected with new twisted veins HDMI cable. after easy set-up downloaded new firmware. first off sat box works fine no prob even with you tube or pandora. that was the good news, now the unexplained! my a/v receivers user interface says connected to wireless network and even shows the address but when i go to user interface to listen to network music services, it comes up no signal. now i try my new blu ray player, nothing. i hook the blu ray directly to the tv and the player works, so i then download new firmware for it and connect back to the blu ray input, again nothing. i'll switch inputs and it's hit or miss. one time i hooked the blu ray to the sat input on the receiver and it worked , later switched inputs to find out again hit or miss. i've tried just about everything and there's only so much you can do with the settings. i really liked the features as in the user interface and remote control so i can say i am dissapointed but this was the 2nd unit. i've not read any reviews similar to mine so i'll be trying the onkyo next.

This is such a nice receiver, I upgrade to a 4k TV and components and it sounds so much better than the previous 7.1 receiver I had. Sony's customer sucks awfully bad and that might deter me from buying another product of theirs. I am happy with this product though

I am very pleased with the strong amplifier in this unit. It powers my mirage omd 15 speakers very well and is refinded sounding.Everything is working as advertised and am gaining respect for the attention that sony is giving to their receivers as of late. I have been using pioneer receivers which I am very pleased with and am still looking forward to getting one of their D3 amp receivers soon. Although, for the money I will say I don't think you can do better than the sony. Thanks sony.

I've had this receiver for about a year and simply put, there are bad problems with the HDMI outputs on this box.
The screen goes black randomly regardless of what HDMI device is being accessed. To restore the HDMI connection, I have to tilt the receiver forward - back end up and the connections magically come back.
It's fun to explain the Sony experience to houseguests! Great work here, Sony!
I can't count on Sony "support" to fix it, either. It's non-existent.
The Sony support deal #if you can cut through the accent#:
Ship the unit to somewhere in Texas at your expense, they will "repair" it and send it back to you - if they get around to it. I say "if" because after their Blue Ray unit quit I sent it back according to the instructions.
After a month wait I called to find out that Sony had lost all paperwork and the unit itself.
After more calls and finally getting through to the Texas warehouse manager, they sent me a new unit from Chicago!
I bought a COMPLETE Sony package, including a 65" UHD. As you can imagine, I'm hoping that TV holds out!
I can't understand that despite the very real Sony-HDMI problem, all of these "happy" reviews exist here.
Take a look at other reviews on the web before wasting $600.00 on this receiver!
