    Sony is back! Awesome TV

I've bought Samsung TVs for the past 10 or 15 years and always enjoyed them and their features and interface. But This year after doing tons of research and comparisons I decided to give Sony and try. A long time ago I had Sonys before anything in my house but tech changed along with the times and Samsung surged past Sony in quality and features. But after seeing this TV and enjoying the fun of unboxing it, setting it up and the quality and design of this massive TV, I think Sony is back!! I was super impressed with the packaging and attention to detail while unboxing the TV. The quality and design of the panel is fantastic and solid as it should be for the price of this TV. The colors and options with this TV is excellent. In regards to people saying the interface is slow and laggy, I did not experience that at all. Over the years, I've enjoyed the interface of the Samsung TV but I think the Sony is just as good. So don't let that stop you from buying this TV. In regards to the motion. I've seen reviews and comments about this before I bought the TV and I was very nervous. After watching Sports and fast action seems, I rarely see it. I'll put it this way. If you are a hardcore videophile, it could bother you. I'm not sure. But for me the picture is absolutely fantastic. I truly wanted the z9d but let's be honest, at double the price, I didn't see the justification for the price in regards to picture comparison. Is the z9d a better TV, absolutely it is as it should be. It's Sonys flagship TV along with the OLED but I'll take the 940e all day over both of those TVs for the price difference. It has been refreshing to see Sony back and I say that in all honesty. I'm not partial to any Manufacturer by the way

Beautiful picture ... but OS not perfect

I was agonizing over a 65" OLED or 75" LCD TV ... not rich enough for a 75" OLED. I decided to go big .... :) Here are my observations so far. I think as others have noted that you better have a good stream for this TV to shine. The 1080p streams show up beautifully. Great contrast and beautiful colors. However ... to really get the sharpness that I'm used to on my smaller 4k TV, one needs a full 4k stream and there is not much out there. But this is not a knock on the TV but it is a bit frustrating for a couple of reasons .... one is the lack of 4k content ... especially local broadcasts. The other is that to stream 4k the network bandwidth requirements are greater. 25mbs is recommended. Mine is currently at 12mbs and the TV struggles to keep up (more on this later) So I'm struggling with the thought of doubling my cable costs to access the minimal 4k content :( ..... But like I said earlier the 1k content is great ... just not spectacular like 4k is. The 75" size will otherwise magnify the faults of the stream. Watching local channels over Dishnet is fair at best. The premium channels like HGTV are better though. Now back to the TV struggling to keep up with my minimal 12mbs bandwidth. I also have a 4k Roku box and a 4k Blue Ray player. When I try streaming the apps on those devices they appear to keep up a better. I configured them to use the same hardwired cable that I used for the TV as well. Talking to the BestBuy folks about that, they believe that the dedicated streaming processors in the other devices are just more capable and so require less bandwidth ... at least that's the theory. So I will not be using the Android TV features of the TV and will continue to use my Roku. Not a show stopper for sure as I prefer the Roku anyway. But this is the reason I give this TV 4 stars and not 5.

Puts the "theater" in home theater

Originally torn between this TV and an LG C7 Oled. Probably went to BB 20 times to look at both side by side (I think the employees were starting to get a little weirded out). LG seemed like the "safe" bet with it's great all around reviews but the 940e had the wow factor I was looking for in my home theater. Was definitely concerned by several negative reviews here on the BB site but finally decided to take the risk. Couldn't be happier. I'll chalk most of the negative reviews up to user error since I haven't experienced any similar issues. Picture is absolutely amazing (especially with 4K but also with plain old HD). My only beef is that the Android TV platform is clunky and hard to customize. Still trying to figure out how to get rid of all the bloatware. But that is a minor issue since I won't be needing it once the Apple TV 4K version is finally released.

    Awesome TV

I exchanged a disappointing Samsung 75" q6 for this and could not be happier. The difference is night and day! Colors feel more natural, contrast is phenomenal, and this set has absolutely none of the backlight clouding I had with the Samsung with the lights off. Very little tweaking needed to get the absolute best picture out of this thing, it's excellent right out of the box. Motion handling is phenomenal for movies and general TV, the slower LCD response rate is barely noticeable with sports and faster content, so totally worth it for the absolutely amazing performance with movies and dark room viewing. I don't know that OLED would do much better with the lights off, and the better brightness and highlights, plus no burn in risk, make this set better than OLED in my opinion. Black levels visually are a near match for OLED, the local dimming is that good. The local backlight enhancement also produces stellar bright highlights for the best HDR image I've seen. The only negative is there's some vertical banding with a solid grey test pattern, but not enough to notice with normal viewing, and not enough to take off a star in my rating. All in all, an amazing TV, worlds better than the comparably priced q6.

    A true replacement for plasma

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have been quite skeptical of LCD/LED TV's and was holding out for an OLED, but I think this TV is the best of all. The image processor is amazing making everything look great. Of course, 4k content looks best, but 1080p looks better on this set than on my Samsung 64" plasma. I'm a convert now. It is a shame that plasma didn't survive, but this set delivers awesome contrast and brightness in a super large size. Sony really delivered on this one. Even my family agrees that this TV has a superior image. We use it with an Amazon FireTV and can get 4k content from Netflix. The build-in stand is very sturdy, though, I may still hang it on the mount I already installed so I can angle it downward to my seating position. The only complaint is that the color fades when you view it from the side. For my seating arrangement, this isn't a problem, but it is a drawback compared to plasma and OLED and compared to other LCDs.

Good picture quality but horrible UI and software

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I bought this TV after comparing it to Samsung QLED Q7. The Sony's picture quality is impressive but there are a few issues: 1) I often notice motion blur and processing lag in scenes with fast changing lighting e.g. concerts with flashing lights... 2) Deep blacks but dark areas of the screen are less detailed compared to my old plasma TV 3) Inconsistent lighting on lighter screens where the screen edges appear to be darker than the rest of the screen 3) Google cast is extremely buggy, I have two wifi networks (5G and 802.11ac) at home and my old Chromecast dongle worked seamlessly with either of them. This TV's built-in cast feature worked with both networks for the first couple of days but since then it only works with only the 5G network. Even then, it often stops working and I have to completely unplug the TV to make it work again, standby and restarting through the remote doesn't help. 4) Remote control is a bit buggy, it can only change channels but not turn on or off the Verizon FiOS set top box after multiple attempts at setting this feature up 5) Netflix app bugged out too, it had to be closed, all app data cleared to make it work again. Perhaps a software update can handle some of these issues but I'm disappointed that a TV that costs 6K has so many issues. I'm planning to add a sound bar and sub but given my experience I'm afraid I might experience issues with controlling volume through remote as others have experienced. I'm debating returning this TV for a Samsung at this point...

The good: Awesome picture. The Bad: 1) Super slow operating system. When using apps, if you hit the volume, it takes a while to see the progress bar and your movie will stutter. Mostly on Amazon Prime. 2) This TV won't accept Bluetooth headphones. You have to buy a separate Bluetooth adapter. Seriously, Sony? $6K? Get with the times, man. 3) ARC is a mess. Totally takes over your system and very little options to disable certain ARC features. Impossible to use a Harmony Remote because the Sony ARC confuses it so much. I just completely disabled it. 4) You have to point the remote directly at the TV's sensor or it won't detect it. Others have mentioned this in forums. 5) If you use an optical audio cable, you have to go into the settings every single time you want to use your surround receiver and set it to external audio. My other TV's would always play both receiver and TV speakers together. I would just have to mute the TV. 6) There is literally no full owners manual available. Not in the box nor online. Just a real basic manual that doesn't explain all the settings. The only reason I haven't returned this TV, is because of the great picture.

I replaced a 2011 Samsung PN 59 d which was their top of the line plasma at the time. I did quite a bit of research before purchasing this television a lot of people praise the brightness of the picture because of the 256 backlight zones. When watching this television at night it literally lights up the entire room it's really quite impressive how bright the picture is as well as the colors are great. When watching a streaming movie that is UHD it is incredible the definition that the picture has. The fit and finish is also very good the TV has covers on the back to hide the wires all and all I can't say enough about this TV. I'm very happy with my purchase and would recommend it.

This has to be one of my favorite purchases. I began looking at a Sony projector and screen through Magnolia @ Best Buy. I wanted to be immersed in what was in front of me. However, the images were large and crisp, But not like a television. So with that being said our amazingly helpful Best Buy employee showed us this display. And this Sony television did everything I was looking for. What sold me on the unit is that Sony makes the cameras the movies are filmed on. And in reverse put the movies as they were meant to be seen back together on this end. This guy is huge in your home, seeing it in the store doesn't do it justice.

    Poor QA

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I received this TV on March 21st after going through three bad X940Ds (last year's version of this TV). I was initially blown away by the great colors and fantastic blacks. All in all, it was a fantastic TV well worth the money. Then, one day the TV changed completely. A vertical line running straight down the middle showed up and the left side of the screen looked completely different than the right side. Terrible banding showed up on the left side and the light coming from the TV started flashing instead of remaining steady. This is a TV that was put on a wall the day it was received and hasn't been physically touched since. A lot of the problems I had with the previous year's version were related to terrible construction of the standard wall mounting mechanism and poor QA. Basically, the TV would do OK with Sony's custom wall mount for the TV, but a standard wall mount would cause pressure in certain parts of the screen leading to bad clouding and uniformity. I am now concerned that the same thing might be happening with this TV since it's pretty clear the issue I'm having was not there when the TV was first installed and that it's a physical problem with the TV itself. At this point, I'm probably giving up on Sony. I find it completely unacceptable to keep getting products with obvious problems even though they cost anywhere from 4k to 6k USD (before taxes!).

    Bad cable quality

1st I’d like to start off that I never usually leave negative reviews and I’m not trashing this TV, more confused. For starters, The 4K quality of this TV is fantastic. If all you care about is watching 4K movies from a 4K DVD player this is a great TV. Unfortunately if you just want to watch regular cable TV or even stream from something not 4K, it looks terrible. I ended up having to return this TV which was both relieving and heartbreaking. I loved this TV from the display in the store but the quality of the TV in anything not 4K is absolutely horrible. My 11 year old 70 i ch Sharp Aquos has a better picture watching TV. Hulu was unwatchable, even sports games were insanely pixelated and the TV cannot handle the fast motion. I change the wires and I updated Internet speeds and nothing helped. All I read our great reviews about this TV, and I agree in regards to the 4K content this TV is amazing. But if you’re someone normal who just watches TV 4K content probably takes up 25% of your viewing material and you’re stuck watching a pixelated picture for 75% of your other needs. But I with caution and be sure there is a return policy. To Best Buy’s credit they returned the TV with no issue.

Picture looks fantastic and top notch with what you would expect out of a 6,000 dollar tv. however immediately out of the box i noticed there were 2 rows of stripes where I assume the backlights are that are slightly brighter than the rest, which can be seen while watching tv or content. have a replacement scheduled for delivery, but this is not acceptable for a tv that costs as much as a car.

    940e broke twice

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I purchased my first 940e and within a week multiple pixels failed. I returned the TV and got a replacement. Unfortunately I had to leave town for 9 months to deal with family issues and when I returned the only thing I wanted was to relax and use my new home theater that I spent an enormous amount of time and money building. I take my 2nd 940e out of the box, plug it in and nothing. Only a flashing red light. After spending $6,000, to have two sets fail is unacceptable. To make matters worse Sony refuses to exhange the TV. It is still within the warranty, but instead of replacing the broke set they say they will only fix it. If I wanted a fixed TV I would have purchased a refurbished for half the price. Instead of doing the right thing and exchanging the TV they are going to fix a broken $6,000 TV that will probably have something else fail after the warranty expires. I have been a loyal Sony customer for decades and I promise this will be the last Sony product I purchase.

    Sony's Customer Service is Horrible!!

I have had 2 XBR75x940D TVs. Both of them have had the same problems. Turning themselves off and blooming issues. Best Buy did an exchange on the first set and Sony has been out to repair the second. I'm still having the same issues. Called Sony on Saturday 7/15/17 and they offered to exchange my TV but told me that department is closed on the weekend and to call back on Monday between 9-6 est. I received an email from Sony at 11:55 am on Sunday 7/16/17 again stating that Sony would exchange my TV and to call back Monday - Friday 9-6 est. I called today, Monday 7/17 and was given the run around. I was transferred between departments 4 times. I have been told that I need to call back when I'm in front of the TV so that they can run diagnostics on my before they can do anything. Why wasn't this done on Saturday when I was talking to that department??? I was told on the phone and via email that they were replacing my TV with a new one. Why am I getting the run around?? I asked the person in the exchange department for a supervisor and was told that supervisors don't accept calls. It has been the worst customer service experience that I have ever been a part of!! Right now I'm stuck with a 75" lemon. This wasn't an inexpensive TV. Sony could have saved the day but instead wanted to lose a customer! Best Buy has been great! This is no reflection on them at all! I will continue to buy all of my electronics at BB.

I bought a 65” Sony, XBR-65X850D, a little over a year ago and have had nothing but problems. First, the streaming function stopped working after 1 year. I bought a Roku as a work around. Fast forward a few months later, and now my TV keeps rebooting itself. I’ve called in to Sony and they were of no help. I looked online and found out the issues may be due to a software upgrade that Sony released... with bugs in it. Sony wants me to pay for a repair person to come out... to fix their software issue... which is ridiculous! Sony just lost a loyal customer and now I’m making it my mission to warn all Buyers to STAY AWAY FROM SONY PRODUCTS!!! Buy Samsung Products instead. I have several Samsung TVs and have never had problems. For your own sanity... STAY AWAY FROM SONY!!!!
