Spectacular HDTV

This HDTV is spectacular. Have the 75 inch set up with a full home theater surround. The 4k picture is amazing, the blacks are super crisp, the enhanced HDC really makes the images pop. One reason I wanted this HDTV was because I love 3d, and the capabilities of this HDTV is spectacular. I didn't realize that other HDTVs don't have 1080p on 3d, this one does. It makes a huge difference. The 3d seems deeper and more flushed out. Movies like Avatar, Gravity really stand out. It's flawless and you feel like you can reach out and touch it. The upscale on Blu Ray is terrific. I am thrilled I didn't settle, and I realize this set is very expensive. But I would do the purchase again, I'd pay more if I had to. Best home theater experience I have seen. If you want 4k and blu ray 3d, this set will deliver.

Sony makes one of the best TV's on the market and their Z9D is a beast. I made several comparison's between LG, Samsung and Sony's other series A1E. The reason I decided to go with this model was as follows:
1) For a 75 inch TV this was a great price in comparison to the competitors
2) The black levels are very close (within 5-10%) of OLED's
3) The brightness is better than OLED's
4) Still includes 3D - yeah I know maybe a lot of folks don't care but I still enjoy watching 3d movies from time to time
5) Sony will include Dolby Vision on this TV via firmware update in addition to their E and A1E series
I play PS4 Pro (Horizon Dawn Zero) on 4K HDR and it looks and plays fantastic. The gaming lag is around 9ms (I know the 65 inch version of this has much higher input lag around ~24ms) which is another reason why I went for 75 vs 65 version on this model.
In summary if you want one of the best "well rounded" TV's out there that has close to OLED's black levels, amazing brightness, excellent picture quality with 3D and Dolby Vision then this IS the TV you are looking for and nothing comes close....at the moment on writing this review...;)

Reference Display for Movie Lovers
|
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
This display is no slouch, in fact it is on par with the 32" $30K reference monitors that are being used to create films. It's certainly a bargain when you compare it to the professional tools but it's one of the most expensive displays on the market. So I will admit it is not for everyone.
I was on the fence between going LG OLED, waiting for the new Sony OLED A1E to be released or getting this display and what made me decide to purchase this one is a few key features that OLEDs won't be able to touch for a while. First, overall brightness, this is rated as one of the brightest displays in the market and I will say without a doubt it's brighter than the plasma display I owned that it was replacing. Content that has a lot of pure white in it actually has me squinting as if I am looking at a lightbulb or a white wall reflecting the sun. Blacks are nearly as pure black as OLEDs and when you combine the fact that you get much brighter colors and nearly as black blacks, you can tell why this is the reference home display.
I was trying to stay away from buying more discs but it's hard to do when you want to see what this display can do. The first 4K Ultra HD HDR disc I tried on here was Passengers, and the picture quality is absolutely amazing, especially in the scenes where the characters go out for a spacewalk, you can feel the vastness of space and the scene were Chris Pratt looks into space is just mesmerizing. No details are lost in the space with even the faintest stars twinkling in the vast blackness of space, and there was a distinct separation of darks and lights even in the areas where the nebula would have washed out blacks on other displays.
I also had a requirement for 3D content, yes I said it 3D. And this seemed to be the only display on the market that was still doing 3D and killing it in the 4K arena. I have a a bunch of 3D discs from when it was a real big thing and I didn't want to just give that up. The last 3D film I purchased was Dr Strange and this is a film that really lends itself to a showcase of 3D effects without being gimmicky. Watching the opening scene of Dr Strange looks almost as good as it did in the theater, and probably not as good as the theater because I was sampling the 3D during the day in my living room with light shining in. It's actually better than the 7 year old Samsung 8500 Plasma it was replacing being much brighter. I was even able to use my Samsung 3D glasses with the the Sony Z9D and it worked great.
The built in SmarTV apps worked well and I was able to get ARC setup to my AV receiver without issue and watch Netflix and Amazon Prime 4K/UHD content without any issues. I now prefer to access Netflix via the SmarTV app rather than use my Apple TV because I get UHD content, but streaming my Apple library to the monitor still looks great and upscales well.
I haven't played a lot of games on it but the response time is good and the image quality is outstanding, performs much better than OLED for games.
There are only a few drawbacks to this display that I can think of, big one is price, this is double the price of similar sized competitors displays, and those those displays might not perform as well it's hard to justify paying twice as much to go from good to great, or as I will put it, from "yeah that's nice" to "wow, that's amazing!" Most people aren't as much of a film buff as i am so I can't fault them for not appreciating the difference. If you are one to spend the extra money for Dolby Vision/Dolby Atmos experience at a theater you'll really appreciate this display. If you don't care if you watch a film at your local theaters 2nd run screens then you probably don't need to consider this as the experience is less important to you.
Other drawback, is that this display isn't as svelte as an OLED or even other LEDs on the market, it certainly sits further out on my wall than my Samsung did, but not so much that it is going to change your perspective looking at it. The bezel is really thin and the picture is so good that you really do forget how deep the monitor is compared to an OLED or even Sony's newest A1E display.
If you can afford this monitor and you like the best this should take serious consideration.

I have owned many 75 inch Sony tvs. 940d, 940e, 900e. The 940d was my first Sony and I fell in love instantly. Very good motion handling, very good local dimming, everything about it was awesome. But it had a single vertical band right in the center of the screen that I couldn't ignore. Upgraded to a 940e and it had an incredible picture but there was major trailing on any motion and I couldn't live with it so I sent it back and went with a 900e. Excellent motion and everything looked great. There was some pretty major blooming especially with HDR material but some bias lighting made it almost invisible. But I got a great deal on a z9d (the one I always wanted) and man, it blows them all away. The motion is not quite as smooth as on the 900e but WAY better than the 940e. No trailing at all. Just a little bit of smearing in certain scenes when you have something dark traveling across a light background. But it's not a huge deal by any stretch of the means and I am super sensitive to motion issues. The 75 in has a different panel than the 65 inch and the pixel response is faster. Local dimming is amazing. Even on a brightness level of 15 out of 50 I find my self squinting on some SDR content. HDR is incredible. With the current price drop, this is the 75 in to get. Especially if you like 3d, this set does awesome 3d, there is some flicker but it's not too bad.

I have owned the Elite Pro-70 now for 5 years ( what many considered the best 1080P LCD TV made) so my expectations for a new 4K HDR TV for my basement theater was very high. I wanted the picture quality to be as good or better than the Elite. I first considered to Sony 900E as well as the 940D and although both were great looking TV's the one thing in particular that the Z9 offered that none of the others did was 3D. Since the Elite is also 3D I had collected a large number of 3D movies. Also when you compare the high number of zones that the Z9 has versus the other Sony FALD TV's I thought the Z9 would meet my needs. Well I can tell you it not only meets my needs but absolutely crushes them. This TV is spectacular in every way. It can get extremely bright and has amazing vivid colors. I replaced a 60" Sony so the size increase is massive. I have the TV calibrated and brightest only needs to be 10-15 (maxes out in HDR mode) I recently upgraded my internet speed to 300mps and upgraded my Netflix account for HDR and am having a great time watching 4K and HDR content. 3D is great on a TV this size. There has been some discussion about motion lag for gaming but I do not game and do not notice any issues with regular content. I realize this is not a cost conscious TV by any means but I like watching TV and movies and if you can swing it then you won't be disappointed. I now have to force myself to go upstairs and watch my Elite. I'm sure some new tech will come along that will change the TV landscape but for now I can't think of anything I would rather watch.

Does HDR, crisp 4K, does 3D, and does it all incredibly well. Plus, an update will enable Dolby vision HDR, so it is future proof. And if you like it bright, this TV is BRIGHT. But it also does perfect black. Most of the detractors you see, in my opinion, are based on price, which is steep - but it's worth it if you can afford it.

Best TV We've Ever Owned

This is the best TV we've ever owned. It replaced a 65" Z9D that was having reliability issues. That TV's picture was also great when it worked, though not quite as good as the 75". I think that has to do with more local dimming zones and some other improvements due to its size. Before the 65" we had a Panasonic plasma (St60) which we really enjoyed. Had been staying away from LED because the blacks were not as good. The 75Z9D is the closest we have seen to an OLED or plasma capable blacks from an LED TV. When the screen shows a 100% dark scene, you think the TV has turned off. It's beautiful. Never thought we would get that from an LED set. The picture is excellent. Best from any TV we have owned by far. The smart TV features could be faster but this being Android based and having a previous gen processor we aren't surprised it isn't as snappy as some of our other TVs. The only possible drawback to this TV is the limited viewing angles. Hasn't been a huge problem for us, but I could see it bothering some. If you are still able to get one of these give it a shot. Excellent picture quality.

Pros
Fabulous Picture
Stunning 3d, pops at least ten feet until the room. I never understood why 3d didn't catch on for TV since it is way better than in the theater.
Has 4k Netflix, when you first start it, Netflix will ask if you want to upgrade to their 4k plan.
Cons
Loaded up with hundreds of useless Android apps
Bluetooth works for recommended wireless headphones and nothing else
There is a 3d ghosting issue with a faint black band that can occur, I believe due to the overloaded apps. If your 3d is not absolutely prefect, you can fix this from the About menu, restart, without erasing all settings.
Buy for the picture and the 3d and not the Apps and you will be perfectly happy.

I have been thinking about buying this TV for over a year. Since 4K isn't really wide spread yet I was dragging my feet. When Best Buy had dropped the price for the Holiday's I took advantage of it and couldn't be happier.
Regular stations look excellent, I don't know how it makes the picture better but it does.
Netflix and UTude 4K, WOW, it looks like what you see at the store.
I've only had it for a few weeks but would recommend it to anyone.
It's the most I've ever paid for a tv..., but well worth it.
This is a 5 Star TV all the way!!!

Without making any adjustments at this time, the picture blows me away. Coming from an 4 year old 70" Sharp Elite 1080P, I can really see a big difference in the deep blacks and the much brighter picture.
I have been a longtime Sony TV enthusiast until about 8 years ago, when I felt Sony starting falling behind in innovation and quality. But this years model Z9D, I feel has put Sony back on top. This is the BEST TV Sony has ever made to date.model

Best TV to purchase if you want to upgrade to 4K but have a library of 3D movies as well. It has a very nice picture. Great black levels. The design of the Sony 3D glasses aren’t that great but work OK. I have another pair from Expand Vision that I use for most of my 3D viewing. Overall I am very satisfied so far with my purchase. I’m hoping this Sony Z9D lasts longer than my Sharp Elite TV did.

After viewing all of the larger size, 4K TVs at Best Buys showroom, I was expecting to have a great picture in 4K with the Sony Z Series. But I was blown away on the picture improvement on regular HD programming! Up-scaling HD has amazing results on the Z Series making 1080p almost look as good as 4K! Only downside I could possibly find was some very faint, vertical lines or blotches toward the middle of the screen? You can only see this on very bright, white scenes? Nobody has mentioned or seen this besides me so I am really "nit-picking" to mention something I can barley notice on clear white screens only 2% of the time. I would still definitely pick this Z Series Sony over the OLED models from LG and Sony because this TVs brightness and quality is "Awesome"!

This is my 4th sony tv and this is by far the best one. I had a 940d and it had panel issues it was replaced by the z9d. Huge improvement especially with 4k hdr. Android is buggy and 3 d has a little crosstalk but it's better than previous Sonys I had and it's pricey

This purchase was made after owning a Sony 55" from 8 years ago. If you like the layout that Sony has, this is your TV. The picture is crisp, the colors vibrant, and the black levels are perfect.
