Nice size camera and takes good pictures. We bought it because it shoots in RAW. The controls are complicated and not intuitive. We have not spent enough time learning it yet, but on a recent trip to New York we could not get the flash to not pop up (frustrating).

    Best point and shoot camera

If you do all of your research as I have, you will no doubt find that everyone says this is the best point and shoot pocket camera in the market today. After trying it out, I would definitely agree with the image quality! Low light pictures were amazing, and a fast zoom as well... Battery life was actually pretty good too. And it feels solidly built like a quality product should... The only negative things I can say are: 1) Price is still a bit too high for a pocket camera, even though the 1" sensor does warrant the price range... Does a Canon S110 have an acceptable comparison of image quality for half the price? Might have to try it out for yourself to compare... 2) Body was slippery for me as the front had nowhere to really provide grip, and the thumb grip in the back is pretty small. Definitely make sure to use the wrist strap, as I almost dropped it a few times! 3) The image preview zoom was surprisingly slow, even though I used a Class 10 16 GB card. I'm also not really a big fan of the way Sony's zoom all the way in too tight first, and then you have to zoom out to see more of the picture. I supposed it's nice if you want to quickly make sure a photo you just took is sharp so you can take it again if necessary, but since most of the time the RX100 takes sharp photos, this was more a pain than a gain.

Meeting all my expectations... and then some

I appreciate well-framed, accurate and technically challenging pictures... however i'm a far cry from being able to take them myself. I have too many hobbies to take on photography too but I wanted to get "good enough" to stop having rookie mistakes in what would otherwise be great shots. Although I firmly believe that "knowing the technique" is the key to a better shot and that hardware cannot fix the eye of a bad shooter, this camera re-defines that to some extent. Out of the box it eliminated many of my "quick-shot" mistakes and it takes amazingly clear, well-focused photos. In full auto mode it does an outstanding job of picking the right settings. Can my shot's be better if I learned more about photography technique and control, absolutely! I bought this expecting to do just that... however what I have found is that I use it more as an excellent point-and-shoot and still only use 10-20% of it's full capability as a full-featured camera. It's quite a bit larger than my previous point and shoot but small enough to have with you most of the time. Jumping to a full-body SLR meant I would only have it 10% of the time I need it and with the RX-100, it will be closer to 80%. Things to consider... If you buy the form-fitted leather case for it (which is excellent BTW), it does add enough bulk that it's no longer pocketable with the exception of jackets and cargo pockets. The flash is in an awkward location. i've almost dropped the camera twice when it popped up under my finger and startled me. When zooming into a picture in playback mode, the default is to jump waaaaaay too far into the picture and you have to zoom back out. I wish this was configurable (or that I could find where if it is...). 1/2 as far would be ideal for me. It's almost as much as an entry-level full body SLR, but don't let that scare you away. It's well worth it and VERY unlikely you will get camera envy any time soon.

Photo quality is good but the zoom is crippling and pathetic. The photo quality does not overcome the limitation of the zoom so you cannot count on cropping the photo you want later.

Hands down the worst purchase I've ever made at Best Buy. I was sold a separate shoulder strap which did not fit the camera. I could not " wear it " for those immediate scenic shots, had to keep it in a pocket - same as my I Phone8 which I ended up using as it took better pictures than the Sont Cyber Shot &I had to buy the Memory Card,

DSLR quality that fits in your pocket

After researching cameras for over 6 months, Sony released the RX100 and it was a perfect fit for me. I am traveling to Argentina to do mission work for over a year and I wanted DSLR quality pictures and full HD 1080p video that could fit in my pocket. I have exactly what I want in this camera. I didn't want to be carrying a huge DSLR or a micro 4/3 around in my hand and get robbed in a foreign country. This camera is perfect to whip out of your pocket, take a picture with less than a second power on time and snap that picture with almost no focus time. When people see my photos they ask if they came from a DSLR because they are so sharp, bright, crisp and clear. I love the ring around the lens that spins, you can have it adjust the zoom, the exposure, the filter, anything you want, and the Function buttons and menus are completely customizable. The shooting filters are so much fun to play with, it has in camera HDR, color selection with blue, green, yellow, and red, miniature focusing, watercolor, color pop, B&W and so much more. Photos at night time are amazing. You get what you pay for and I would pay even more for this camera with the quality you get that actually slides into your pocket. When I opened the box, I was actually surprised to see that the camera was smaller than I thought. I bought a waterproof/dustproof Pelican 1010 case that it fits perfectly in and a lcd scratch protector from Sony. I am thoroughly pleased with the camera, it is super fast, all metal build, and stunning quality. The only con that I can find is that the black paint on the exterior stratches easily, but can be fixed if kept in a case. And with the review above, the manual is lacking, but once you start using the camera it is extremely easy to catch on.

I got this camera since I didnt want a bulky DSLR , but wanted similar quality pictures. I have had this for 2 years, and it has not disappointed. Already 2 more upgrades have come out, but i still love the original version. It fits into my jeans pocket - that is not exaggerating. Also, the pictures are nothing like what I get out of similar size cameras. It has host of advanced features, which is enough to keep me occupied.

    A great travel camera

I travel a fair bit and I always carry a camera with me. Sometimes, I carry my main system cameras (either the Nikon D600/D3s or a Leica M9). Yet, these systems are heavy. When I want to travel light, I want a high quality camera that can give me pictures that are equivalent to what I would have gotten from either a Nikon or a Leica but that do not take up a great deal of space. In the past, I have used Canons (S90/S95), Olympus (XZ-1), and Fujifilm (x10). Based on reviews from places like DPREVIEW and photographyBlog, I decided to look at the Sony RX100. Simply put, this is a great camera. What did Sony do right: large sensor - check; good sets of control - check; high quality images - check; a decent Automatic white balance - check; a really compact decision where the lens is protected when not in use - check; programmable lens control ring - check; 10 fps full-resolution burst shooting - check (great for kids and sports); shallow depth of field - check; superb Zeiss lens - check. This is not to say that this is a perfect camera. In its current form, it lacks an electronic view finder (i.e., a viewfinder that replaces the rear viewing screen -- something nice for those like me who grew up with film cameras with their optical view finders); its rear control wheel is not customizable; there is no built-in memory and lack of "no card" warning. Yet, in spite of these minor quibbles, this is a great camera. Buy it - you will not regret the decision. This camera currently beats the best of Nikon (P7700 or P330) and Canon (S110/G1x/G15). This camera has been universally highly recommended in most of the reviews. If you use it, you will see why.

I'm someone that has really gotten used to my phones camera as my primary PnS. I've been thinking about getting a DSLR but didn't want to lug around a bag or have a strap around my neck. I did extensive research on this camera and decided to take the plunge. Its incredible! I love taking pictures with it, its super fast, the different modes are impressive with the amount of settings you can manipulate and change and having it in my pocket or in my girlfriends purse is the MAIN reason I bought this camera. Yes, a DSLR offers great versatility but in the end I wanted DSLR like quality in a PnS frame and this little guy delivers. I also bought the eye-fi for $40 bucks which basically transfers pics form the RX100 to my iPhone/iPad wirelessly. It does it anywhere; it does not need a wifi network to make it happen. Imagine taking a sick pic with the RX100 and then automagically it goes to your iPhone where you then upload instantly to Instagram. Its sick!!

Great camera for a photo enthusiest

I have been an enthusiast photographer since the 60's. My primary cameras have been mostly SLT types. I have on occasion tried more compact type cameras as something more convenient to carry around but they have been, without exception, unacceptable to me due to mediocre image quality, manual capabilities and overall speed and responsiveness, auto focus and shot to shot times in particular. When this camera first came out I was impressed by the universal praise it received from professional reviewers so I decided to give it a try as a take everywhere addition to my camera kit. I have had the camera for over a month now and have taken over well 1000 photos with it and am happy to say it, if anything, exceeds my expectations. The speed is DSLR like including fast auto focus. Due to the ability to customize the functions of the wheels and buttons I have it set up just the way I want it making it extremely easy to use whether for manual or automatic use. As far as handling, at first the small size put me off but after a few days I got used to it and now I have no problems. Some people complain about the lack of a hand grip but for me it isn't needed on a camera this small and light. It may make one handed shooting a touch more difficult for some but it hasn't caused me a problem. I usually shoot 2 handed anyway. I was even able to use it simultaneously with my A65 holding the RX100 in my right hand, the A65 in my left, shooting video with the RX100 and stills with the A65 pushing the A65 shutter button with the little finger of my right hand. The only thing lacking with this camera is an eye level viewfinder but I can forgive that omission because with a camera this small a decent one would be impossible to include without increasing the size of the camera significantly. The LCD is usable in bright sun when you set it to the brightest setting. Last but not least the image quality. In this area I have no complaints at all. Up to iso 800 it can compete with any DSLR, at iso 1600 and 3200, it is a small step behind. At iso6400 I find it unacceptable but few cameras of any kind are acceptable at 6400 as far as I'm concerned. All things considered, the combination of small size, speed, handling and image quality make this camera worth every bit of it's $650. In face I call it a bargain. If I could give it 6 stars out of 5 I would. A final comment about video. I am not as serious about video as I am about stills but, other than the lack of a separate microphone jack, the camera is very good with results competitive with Blue Ray quality. The built in stereo mic is adequate for general use. A final comment about the flash. Some complain about it's location but I have no problem and it can be bounced, a first for a built in flash. Besides, there's no else you could put it.

I was looking to replace my old faithful Nikon D40 DSLR which has served me well but unfortunately I wanted something that I could take everywhere but yet still have the quality that I yearned in the DSLR. I shopped around and played with Canon S110, Nikon P7700, Canon G15, Panasonic LX7, Canon GX1 but I chose the RX100 simply because it not only had the superior image quality but also the compact size I needed. Yes, it's expensive at $649 but well worth it because of the features it provides. Even go to Flickr and look at the results that many folks have taken with this camera. Highly recommend this camera for folks that want both image quality and portability.

Finest "walkabout" camera on the market right now

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

First off, I'm a 40+ year Nikon System shooter, from film SLR's to DSLR's. I've been searching in vain, quite some time, for a first class compact prosumer type camera. Something that I can carry with me at all times and not sacrifice high image quality. This is it, for me. This camera is phenomenal on every level. Hiking around with 5 DSLR bodies, and 20+ lenses is not practical, and invariably I'll leave out the lens that I wish I had brought with me. No more. This is the perfect "walkabout" camera, and Nikon has nothing in this category that even approaches the image quality of this little gem. The Zeiss optics are clear and bright, the autofocus system is fast and accurate, the creative options are extensive. Pricey? Yes, somewhat, but the old adage that you get what you pay for applies here. I recommend this to all enthusiasts and serious photographers out there. You will not be disappointed!

Bought this camera in hopes of great picture quality and small size. Got everything I wanted and so much more! Taking lots of pics of my 4 year old and house pets and it can be tricky, bc it's impossible to get them to stop moving for a moment. Don't have to with this camera! With shutter speed control I can capture everything I want! And the quality of shots in low light is amazing! I am very happy with this camera! One thing - there is basically no user's manual, so you'll have to go online to read everything you need to know about the camera and the futures it holds. But if you have a pc it's no problem. I did it and wrote down the most important to me information, so I'll have it for the future references. Also the location of the pop-up flash is not good. It's right where you usually hold the camera with your fingers. I guess you'll just have to get used to NOT hold your camera at that spot any longer. Highly recommend!

Got this Sony rx-100 after trying it out in the store. Fantastic AWB choices, great low light capability. I love the P,A,S,M modes. I got this camera to carry in place of a FF Nikon when it makes better since such as when spending time with family is more important than concentrating on a DSLR but wanted semi DSLR capabilities. My only complaint is the flash pop-up position creates a learning curve on how to hold the camera but the pop-up flash allowing movement for bouncing off the ceiling etc... makes up for this minor convenience. I agree with Happycameraman the price point could be $100 less but heh,,, you get a great camera. The video function is fantastic with great color clarity and nice contrasting shots.

I love the image quality and the size of the DSC-RX100 for which I would give a 5 star rating. It fits easily in a pocket and takes great pictures. Because it is small, and has decent image quality I take more pictures with this than I do with my Canon 70D. Originally the price seemed high, but nowadays one can find this for under $400 which seems reasonable compared to competitive models. If the camera were more robust I would look at the newer models. My only complaint is the camera is easily damaged when around water which is why I am on camera number 5. If I could get this image quality and size in a water resistant/proof camera I would buy one tomorrow. Until then I will purchase the protection plan and do my best to keep it from being damaged.
