    Best compact P&S, rivals dSLR

This is the best compact P&S you can get (that can fit into a pocket). If you want better quality, you'll have to get a micro 4/3 or APS-C camera which is not pocketable There isn't any big reason to go for the RX100 II or III, unless you want a tilting screen, wifi, or built-in EVF. The RX100 I is still capable. Waiting for the IV to be released, to see if i want to upgrade

    Great backup for DSLR!!!

I've been saving up for this camera, and now with the announcement of the new rx-100 mkII, things have gotten exciting! I decided to buy the current model because I didn't need the hotshoe and tilting back-screen. I've only taken a handful of pics and like my NEX-5 and a57, produces some excellent quality shots. I was getting tired of lugging around my camera bag and now I'm relieved to have a camera that I can carry in my pocket which produces dslr quality pics. This camera will be getting a lot of use!!!

    Excellent point and shoot

I bought this camera for the smaller size and low light performance. I want something with better performance than regular point and shoot but does not want to take those big DSLR's. I had two big european vacations and my regret was the pictures taken at night could have been better. This is an additional camera for me but the way the RX 100 is performing, it looks like that this will be my primary camera and the old Canon will just be a back up. The only thing that I wish would have been different with this camera is the flash, for me it will be better if it is not an automatic pop up flash because of its location. The person taking the picture needs to be conscious that the flash is not being blocked by a finger and it is hard because the flash location is where we normally hold the camera. Overall it is an excellent camera, little pricey but it is worth it.

great small camera for a photo buff

Extraordinary pictures for a pocket camera. great flexibility in shooting modes and options for different conditions. Despite the great images, I am frustrated since the camera has so many shooting options, not to have a detailed user manual. For example I cannot figure out how to turn off tracking focus. It is not in the supplied manual. It is an expensive camera, but since it is so small, I find great value in that I take it with me when I wouldn't have taken my 4/3 camera since it is so much bigger. I love the separate movie button which means you can start filming instantly and you can also take still images any time during a video by pressing the main shutter button.

    Excellent Quality - Rockin Features

I have purchased both the Canon S110 and This Sony RX-100 and by far the winner is Sony! The image quality and precision of this point and shoot is far above any other P&S on the market today. The features available for users to customize their shooting experience are fantastic and the quality of the photos taken are unsurpassed. Pros: HDR mode is great and allows several variations to be taken, the cameras rapid shooting mode is the fastest I have experienced on any P&S, autofocus speed is lightning fast. Fantastic Camera overall! Cons: (nothing related to photo quality at all) Camera Body is slick and hard to hold, You have to physically plug the camera in, in order to charge the battery... The menu is a tad difficult to navigate, especially if you are new to a Sony Camera... but that is easily overcome.

Spectacular IQ - beats everything in it's class

An inexperienced photographer who will only use the Program mode will get great results from this camera. You will need to adjust the autofocus choice I think, but otherwise you won't have problems. The camera makes good choices. The experienced photographer will be getting this camera because they want something more DSLR like, but can fit in a pocket and/or be inconspicuous when used. How this beats all other pocketable cameras: 1. (most importantly to me) it is low-light capable and leaves plenty of pixels for cropping a wide shot where the aperture is 1.8, 2. the 1" sensor gives great DOF as expected, 3. the control ring is useful (I would prefer it to be stepped, and not have to be turned quite as far for use) 4. very quick to take pictures even in low light with the assist beam turned off. Trumps the Panasonic LX7 in IQ, as well as pocketability. Quite similar in size to the Canon S110, but better IQ due to the larger sensor. These are the only 2 that are cheaper that would offer similar low-light capability if you need to save $150 or so. I think this camera would be better priced at $525ish. Having said that, I would not willingly give it up for any other pocket camera no matter how much cheaper. I have been waiting for an upgrade from my Canon SD4000 (2 years ago it was the only pocketable camera with low-light capability). But nobody has provided one that did anything better at the same size. The Canon S95,100 had RAW capability, but there wasn't much to be gained from such a small sensor. So their purchase wasn't justified. Bottom line - if you want a small camera with good IQ, THIS is the camera to get. All other camera's in this size fall short.

Good compact camera. Don't screw around with cheap camera just buck up and spend the $450. The newer rx100s are good but bigger and more$$$. Go with this one for legit status.

Sony RX100 vs Nikon Coolpix A

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Please understand they do not really compete with one another although they could one uses a aps c sensor while one uses a 1" sensor. There is no argument at ~$1000 the coolpix A does in fact have a larger image sensor than the ~$600 rx100. Using the Coolpix A what really bugs me is the lack of actual zoom on this thing and the slow autofocus on this thing as well. Lastly there is an annoying thing where there is a little switch on the side to switch to between: macro, auto focus and manual focus. The lack of image stabilization is another bad thing *** the RX100 lens does have image stabilization. RX100 advantages does have faster auto focus, in superior auto you do not need to physically hit a switch to go in between macro and auto focus. (it does what it suppose to do auto detect that its a macro picture or other scene options) *** The Macro on the RX100 is also significantly better as well, I prefer the macro on the RX100 as I can get a closer shot to the object before the focus does not work anymore. But do realize in real world situations a faster auto focus, image stabilization will generally snap you a better picture than a camera with slower auto focus especially when you are using auto mode on these two cameras. *** Where the RX100 shines is the faster auto focus being able to snap multiple pictures at once and choosing the best picture of the bunch it snaps. To me if you want an all around camera the RX100 would be the definite choice but if you are maybe just taking pictures of landscapes or non moving pictures on a tripod the Coolpix A might be a better choice. If you google rx100 vs coolpix a you'll find spec comparisons and reasons why you might wind up falling in love the RX100 over the coolpix A. I also recommend trying them both in person I bought the rx100 first and *** then bought the coolpix A seeing if I would replace the RX100 but winded up returning the coolpix A.

The Sony RX100, although somewhat pricey, is an excellent photographic tool whether the user is a beginner willing to learn, or a more experienced photographer needing/wanting a DSLR backup. The camera has great image quality and the shorter zoom is partially offset by the ability to crop and still have a fine looking image worthy of either web posting or print of discernible size.

"Set and forget" will be my approach for a while, as the controls and settings are a bit overwhelming for a novice like me. However, that's the beauty of this camera. It has options galore but setting it to auto mode still provides fantastic pics in a full range of locations and circumstances...indoors, outdoors, portraits, landscapes, close-ups, etc. Great camera for me to grow with.

Bought this as my replacement everyday camera. With 20MP it's great and better than iPhone so it's a easy small little camera you can take with you anywhere. Fits inside of jeans pocket and is very easy to use. Good build.

    Amazing camera

This is the best camera we have bought in a long time in the point and shoot category, and this is really a step up into the mid-range cameras that try to hybridize with DSLR features. The pictures are amazing, and the jogdial around the lens to control and fine tune settings is fantastic. Its a bit heavy and sometime deceivingly so, and I've dropped it a few times and so far its still in one piece with a few scratches. - What's not so great is that its missing some key features that I have come to expect. My old Panasonic had GPS built in, which I would have like to see to have some geo-tagging on all my pics and videos. Also would have liked to see some barebones wifi on this little beast.
