Tiny little microphone, by the description in the box it is more useful for "vlogging" than for recording sound at a distance (even though it is called a shotgun microphone. It does come with one killer fluffy wind cover!

THIS… is the Sony Vlogger Shotgun Microphone, not to be confused with any other shotgun microphone from Sony… This one is made exclusively for vlogging. Coming with its own windscreen and thanks to its MI shoe (Sony's proprietary port on Sony cameras and accessories) it doesn't need a battery or a 3.5mm jack to transfer the audio to the camera. However, it comes with a short 3.5mm audio cable anyways in case you get a non-Sony camera (tisk tisk). In a tight market with tons of competitors, is this the best microphone for vlogging/interviews? Let's cut into it! Sound - This is what we are alllllll here for, and to be honest this mic sounded really good for being both smaller and cheaper than my more conventional-shaped RODE microphone. It is quite a good shotgun microphone picking up what is in front of it but also having a nice vlogging twist to it where it will pick up a few feet behind the camera as well so the person recording is heard just as well. This is quite a good mic, I think that to truly get a better quality sound out of a microphone you will have to get one that is substantially larger or substantially more expensive. Issues - While this microphone did come with a windscreen, I would say that in my opinion, the Deadcat does work a little better as I was able to get some ambient noise to come through over the mic - though, I did have to work for it and it was slight and didn't ruin the shot/sound. MI shoe - This has to be my favorite feature by far on any camera - coming from a RODE shotgun microphone where I had to make sure it was charged, the 3.5mm cable was plugged in, and making sure I had an extra of each - this killed all those headaches by removing those points of conflict. At the end of the day, reliability is the most important trait a media product can have because, if you don't get the shot... Then it doesn't matter what camera/mic/setup you have. This feature is so good in my opinion, even if a RODE or other brand microphone was cheaper at the same quality, I would still pick this to avoid the headache of a dead microphone or a missing/broken 3.5mm cable (and why is it so hard to find a 3.5mm cable ONLY when yours breaks or goes missing!). Final Thoughts - What more is there to say? A compact microphone where you don’t have to worry about a dead battery or a cable going bad … and it also sounds great! While it is on the more expensive side for a microphone at $150 - it is a one-and-done type of deal. While it might not be as automatic if you don’t have a Sony camera, there is almost no reason to not couple it with the new Sony ZV-1F vlogging camera as your end all be all set up. As always, Bestbuy has excellent customer service and a great return policy, so you never have to worry about buying a product that you don’t like.

It works well but you have to "plug" it in to the camera and the cord is just annoying. Because the screen on the camera is small, the cord form this gets in the way so I do not like needing to attach this.

The ECMG1 mic has a feature to focus on sound in front of the camera, damping sounds coming from other direction.  It is light-weight and compact making it easy to carry almost anywhere. The Sony Vlogger Shotgun Microphone is an excellent upgrade to the Sony vlogger camera's like the ZV-1. It is easy to install on the camera and tremendously increases the sound area you are capturing for your video's. The microphone itself is still relatively small and slides into the top mounting slot for the camera. It does come with a windsock to put over the mic which works great and allows your videos to withstand some of the worst wind noise. Comparing the shotgun mic to the standard mic on the camera can have several variables but overall it provides a much better, cleaner audio for your video. If you are in a small quiet room, the standard mic should be enough for your video, but if you are outside, or in a noisy environment, the shotgun mic really shines. You don't have to worry whether the audio is ok during filming and it is nice to have that piece of mind knowing you have the option to get this. It does move freely ever so slightly, so it has some play to it if it bumped and won't just knock it off there if hit. Overall, I highly recommend this microphone for your Sony Vlogging Camera as it gives you much more freedom with your audio over the standard mic. It is well worth the upgrade!

    Budget quality, solid sound.

***TLDR:*** This is a compact, competent solution to directional audio, with solid sound characteristics. ***BUILD QUALITY:*** The microphone is plastic with black steel grilles and a sturdy connecting mechanism. It won't give you a "wow" feeling, but the plastic construction keeps it light, which is key to the built in shock mount functioning. ***STANDOUT FEATURES:*** This mic can be used with a Sony MI shoe or with the 3.5mm mic port and the included cord. It's light and small, and keeps boomy sounds away. It's short front to back size means it won't get into your shot, even while using it on the ZV-1F with it's small stature and wide lens. It also won't bounce up and down as you walk (unlike some other common small mics). ***SOUND:*** Sound is crisp and full, and naturally keeps out some of the lower sounds a larger mic would pick up. This makes it well suited to recording voice. ***DOWNSIDES:*** 1.) The plate to mount into a shoe (hot/cold/MI) is too thick. Attaching to my ZV-1F is difficult. 2.) The grilles (especially front) are vulnerable to damage. The housing should have stuck out more. 3.) The internal shock mount could use more play. Using the 3.5mm jack pulls the mic to that side. It also doesn't work well with a ZV-1F, being that it's output is opposite the camera's. 4.) Retail price. 5.) While using the MI Shoe to connect, sound settings aren't available on every compatible Sony. It's an automatic mode. ***CONCLUSION:*** An imperfect though compact microphone, especially so if using a camera equipped with the MI Shoe (no mic cord required).

    For Vlogging with Sony Mirrorless

There is a lot to like from this little microphone. First and foremost, it gets the job done if you intend to pick up sound directly in front of the camera. Sony promises excellent performance for recording human voice and this microphone does perform well. It’s a very good choice if you intend to use it for vlogging as it isolates ambient sound pretty well. Other aspect that I really like is how compact the microphone is. There’s no mistaking that it’s essentially a shotgun microphone but yet it’s compact enough so as to not drawing too much attention from people to your camera. Conventional long barrel shotgun microphone would immediately draw people’s attention to your camera so kudos to Sony for the design. Since this is a Sony microphone, it works well with Sony cameras. The microphone gets connection and the power directly from the camera without needing extra cables. You can control and make adjustments to the performance of the microphone right from your camera settings as the mic does not have any physical button. When shooting video outdoor and in windy condition, it’s recommended to use the supplied windshield, which further conceals the mic's appearance as a shotgun mic. There’s a small pouch for you to store the mic and it is very useful for storing the small hot shoe cover when you are using the mic. One thing for sure, this camera is designed to pick up sound directly in front of the camera, which means it will not perform well if you intend to use it to pick up ambient sound. So, it is good for vlogging but not so much for events that require you to pick up omnidirectional sound. Having said that, this microphone produces better performance for Vlogging comparing to an older Sony microphone I got from a few years ago. When using this microphone with Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras, you will notice the big difference. However, if you use it with the latest Sony Vlog cameras, there’s no big jump in terms of performance. I would recommend this mic if you use Sony Alpha mirrorless cameras and older generation Sony Vlog cameras.

    Simple and Easy to Use

Sony Mic Review Long story short, this mic is the perfect companion for the ZV-1F and what it lacks in sound quality, it more than makes of for in convenience and ease of connectivity.. There’s not really much that can be said in the way of reviews for an on-camera microphone. I could talk about frequency response, or how tight the pickup pattern is, or what the transient response is like but honestly, none of that really matters in this context. What does matter (in my opinion at least) is the overall sound quality, build quality, and ease of use. All of which are mostly great. Sony includes everything you need to use this mic in the box. The mic itself, a windscreen, and a short little cable to connect it to the camera. It’s important to note that you don’t actually need to use the cable if you’re mounting this on (pretty much) any modern Sony camera - like the ZV-1F. It can communicate with the camera and receive power all through the mount. Genius idea on Sony’s part. The build quality feels nice. I’m not worried that’ll snap in two even when tossed around in my backpack. Sound quality is about as good as it can get with a mic of this form factor. Without getting into the physics of microphone design, longer shotgun mics generally perform better when it comes to isolating the voice of the person in front of them from the noise in the background. However, this mic, combined with a bit of voice isolation in Davinci Resolve, and background noise is literally a non-issue. Sony did a great job working within the limitations of this form factor and making a mic that’s convenient and easy to use while still sounding good. If what you want is a good sounding mic that’s convenient and easy to use and you have a compatible camera, this mic is probably perfect for you. However, if size and ease of use/connectivity aren’t your top priorities and sound quality is king, or if your camera isn’t one of the Sony cameras with a compatible mount, then you can likely find a better fit for you elsewhere.

Overall the shotgun microphone works great, it was easy to setup on my cameras and easy to utilize. The windsock helped reduce the amount of ambient noise, and it helped with reducing hum. The shotgun microphone sat onto of the hot shoe without a problem, the hardest part was putting the windsock on with the wire for input, but even that was not very difficult. All the user needs to do is unpackaged the microphone, place it on the hot shoe, or wherever you want to place the microphone, plug the cord into the input on the camera, and then into microphone, turn on the camera and the microphone is ready to go. Again this microphone is extremely easy to use, and it works phenomenally well. This is truly a great little microphone that sits atop both my Nikon and Sony Cameras with ease, it plugs right into the microphone input and it's ready to rock and roll. I would definitely reccomend this to anyone looking for an external microphone. The Sony Shotgun Microphone is definitely the way to go.

Small bullet-sized microphone with BIG sound

It's a small microphone with big sound. Attaches right to the top of the Sony (and possibly other brand) camera and provides crisp, clean audio on your recordings without a lot of setup. I used this microphone along with the Sony ZV-1F Vlog Camera to produce several instructional videos at my job, both with and without me in frame and the audio continually sounded fantastic. When I say small microphone, it's no larger than a bullet on top of it's mount and can easily be removed and stowed in a pocket or your camera bag. It doesn't get in the way and produces near studio-quality sound regardless what environment I recorded in. Don't waste your time with other brands - if it says Sony on it, it's good - REALLY good, and I would strongly recommend this microphone (and aforementioned camera) to anyone looking to do video recording or stills. A great additional to anyone's video kit or even for taking on a vacation with you to capture moments that you'll never want to forget - great job Sony!

This microphone does one thing and it does it pretty well. When you compare this to your camera's built in microphone, it almost always handily bests it in terms of sound quality and clarity. Setup works 2 ways and either of them are dead simple. It uses Sony's proprietary hot shoe so if you have a Sony camera with the MI hot shoe, you just plug this baby in there and you're off to the races. Everything is pretty automatic. But it also includes a super short 3.5mm cable you can connect to most other cameras with cold shoes or that aren't Sony but have a mic input. This is the route I took with my Sony ZV-1F since it only has a cold shoe. Audio quality was noticeably better in all the tests that I did but I found that closer shots in a quieter room made less of a difference. You can still tell the difference in ambient room noise since the microphone is picking up a much more narrow wave in front of the microphone instead of picking up noise from all around the camera but the further away and in noisier environments, the more noticeable the difference was. There's not much more to say. I'll definitely be using this microphone any time I'm using my camera since it always beats the built in microphone. Depending on your use case, the cost may be worth it since it is a little pricey. But it's a quality microphone so if it's in your budget, it may be worth it to you.

The Sony - Vlogger Shotgun Microphone, MI Shoe and 3.5mm cable compatible is a must have accessory for the Sony ZV 1F vlogging camera for content creators. First off is build quality. It’s is mainly made of plastic with metal with a metal grill. The Sony vlogger shotgun microphone comes with a soft cloth bag, 3.5mm cable and a noise suppressing windscreen that looks like a toupee for a camera. It’s is super lightweight and about two inches in height and does not get in the way of your shot. You can connect the camera with the included 3.5mm cable or with the multi interface (MI) shoe which eliminates any cables of the use of batteries to power the shotgun microphone. I am currently using the Sony Vlogger shotgun microphone on my Sony ZV 1F vlogging camera and they pair nicely together. As far as sound quality goes there is a noticeable difference in sound quality compared to the internal camera microphone. It captures audio directly in front of the camera for those vlogging shots when you’re talking to the camera. It does pick up a tiny amount of ambient noise but not enough to be a deal breaker. Audio from your voice comes through crisp and clear and pair with the wind filter it’s great for those outdoor shots.
