Granted, you need to have the right camera to go with this lens. I use this SEL70300G with a Sony a7II and the photos are better than I could imagine. The Optical SteadyShot (OSS) feature plus the body stabilization in the a7II make for incredibly crisp, detailed shots without the need for a tripod (even when maxed at 300mm). Need to lower your shutter speed for more light? Want to shoot in 100 ISO (or less)? This camera and lens combo can get the job done. I have had several of my photos accepted by stock photography sites which are known for being strict on image detail, exposure, and overall quality. I had been waiting to get the right equipment before becoming a stock contributor and this lens does not disappoint. There's so much more positives to mention including the macro capabilities of the lens. I have great shots of dragonflies where it's just scary how crisp and detailed the eyes, wings, and even their little insect hairs are in the shots. Don't be fooled, this telephoto lens can do up-close shots as well. I've been able to keep it on longer without swapping because of the versatility. The Sony Nano AR coating also works very well. My shots have not suffered any lens flare or chromatic aberration (CA). The lens appears to stack up to the hype on Sony's website.
Now, I'll stop sounding so biased and list some cons:
• Price. I managed to get a coupon that I applied toward this lens. I would not play full retail.
• The manual on-lens switches on the side of the lens slide very easily. You can unintentionally slide out of steadyshot or manual focus and not notice. This normally happens when putting the camera in the bag or taking it out. Not a big deal, just check the switches before shoots and occasionally as you shoot.
• Size & Weight. I'm coming for a Sony a5100 with an SEL55210 so this SEL70300G is HUGE. The shots are amazing so it's worth it.
• It takes a while for the zoom control to loosen up. It will be stiff at first, but will get much smoother after continued use.
• Auto focus can be slow at times. I primarily use manual focus, but there are moments when AF is needed, especially with wildlife that may move unpredictably.
All in all, it's a great lens and I'm more than satisfied with the purchase. It's my main shooter and I thoroughly enjoy going to my favorite nature spots to take beautiful photos. If you need reach, versatility, great detail, and quality, this is a great pick.

My first full-frame lens. Both the camera and lens are new. I'm really happy with the picture quality after using them a few times. I'm sure I'll get used to it. It's good, but it's a little heavy.

I was hesitant on this lens because of the f stop, but with the f2.8 being almost double the price I decided to give it a go! I was totally blown away with how much I love this lens! It's super sharp and quick to focus. I've been able to take some amazing photos & video of my fiancé surfing with this lens. Of course video is a little unsteady at 300mm but nothing you can't correct in post! I use this lens primarily outside in good lighting, but I've been able to get some amazing photos out of it in low light setting as well (with the help of Lightroom). Highly recommend!

User-friendly and quick focus between shots. It’s a little bit heavy for such a small Sony camera but a padded strap helped around the neck. Photo results are well worth the extra weight.

I have no complains about this lens. the build quality is awesome, quality of the pictures is even better. Lens is heavy, but well balanced. zoom ring is smooth and not too long. images are surprisingly sharp corner to corner. This is the best Telezoom lens i have ever owned!

I got this lens because I wanted something superior to the kt 55-210 mm zoom lens. It was OK, but I wanted a lens that produces excellent photos and this one does.
What's going for it? On a crop sensor camera like my A6500, the 70-300 mm lens becomes a 105-450 mm lens.
It has OSS, optical steady shot technology, which will help with a little shaky hand, this is a heavy lens. It works well as I do a lot of shooting without support.
As you can see in the picture of the lens, it has a few features like switching from auto focus to manual focus, turning on or off steady shot and limiting the focus range.
As for the sharpness, you will not be disappointed. It is very, very sharp.
In the photo below, I shot this little guy munching on what is left of my watermelon. The colors are rich and saturated and the image of the beetle is very sharp. Using my A6500, I was zoomed in at 300 mm and near minimum focus, and you can see the detail and colors, just beautiful. Due to the size of the original photo, I had to do a little cropping.
Overall I can't complain about this lens. I knew it was heavy, but I've had heavier in the past. It appears well made and feels very solid. The feel of the zoom ring is smooth and not loose.
I can recommend this for the price. And I do recommend purchasing full frame lens for the Sony crop sensor cameras because one day you may want a full frame Sony body like the A7 full frame models. Sony made the wise decision to keep the mount identical so full frame lens work flawlessly on crop sensor bodies. We just benefit using the best part of the lens on the crop sensor .

Extremely balanced and well-weighted and very easy to use. I bought this for sports videography last minute for an extremely small and compact camera body, and was worried everything was going to feel out of balance, but it e fed up feeling completely natural and I got some FANTASTIC footage from the Daytona 24 hour race. Did excellent in low light even with my body’s limitations. My first 4-figure lens and I don’t regret a single penny I spent.

Great Lens For a Variety of Situations

The Sony FE 70-300 mm lens is a great all around lens for relatively near and far distances. Although not a true macro or longer telephoto lens, it captures great images in a variety of situations. For example, I change lenses a lot less when photographing insects and birds. Additionally, it provides the space between the camera and the more skittish subjects (nature moves - a lot).
There are good online reviews which provide great info and spec details to help you decide if the Sony FE 70-300 mm lens meets your needs.
I did hesitate at spending over $1,000 for a lens, but I find this lens worth the cost.

Picture quality, focal range, speed and compact size make this an ideal travel partner. The only small caveat to that is the weight. Not far from similar lenses, but a bit on the heavy side.

So far I have used this lens mostly on nature trails, but I've used the sports function on my camera - Sony A6000 - and it's fast, super fast. The clarity is crystal clear and it can reach way out there, which is what I need to capture my daughter playing soccer. It's a little heavy, so I can imagine using for a whole game would get tiresome on the shoulders. I would recommend a monopod if you don't already have one.

Lens is very sharp in good light, but not as good in low-light situations. I have only had the lens for about a month and have used it almost exclusively for birds and other wildlife here in South Florida. I'm very happy with the results as I had been using the 55-210 kit lens that came with my a6000. It is a bit heavier than I was used to, but not bad. Iguanas below were well out of range, but cropped ok.

This Sony 70-300mm meets my expectation for its price. I can photograph wildlife, landscapes and outdoor sports. Focus fast on my A7R2 and OSS works very well. If you’re looking for something in this focal range and don’t want to put a hole in your wallet, get it. You’ll like it.

I use this lens on a A7M3. Images are very clear and I have been trying new things as the photo of the moon rising over Lake Michigan shows. I had been using an alpha 550 and it looks different because of the APS-C factor but things can be cropped and still be worth printing.

Although it's taking a bit to learn the new SONY camera, this lens has allowed me to capture some amazing pics with tremendous depth and richness of color. I like nature photography so this lens allows me to get close shots while keeping my distance from the critters. I primarily use auto focus but the few times I've used the manual focus the pictures have come out well also.

This is a great lens. The auto focus is nice and quick. The only downside is it’s not the best in low light. However since I mainly capture images while in the outdoors during the day it’s more than sufficient for me. I would give it a full 5 stars if the low light was better. However this is what I expect to pay at this price point.
