    The new PS4 Headset benchmark!

    Posted .

I decided it was finally time to replace my 7-year-old PS3 Sony Wireless Headset. Its battery life had dwindled down to almost nothing and the leather material on the ear cups had completely flaked off. As a gamer and tech enthusiast, I've stayed current on the headset market. I have experienced my friend's PS4 Gold headset and PS4 Platinum headset; both of which had issues with hinges breaking, suffered from connectivity problems, and weren't an upgrade in regards to comfort. Disappointingly I couldn't justify switching from my PS3 set without more value, or at least fewer problems. I turned to the non-Sony world of headsets which included Astro, Razer, HyperX, and SteelSeries. All models from $100-$300 were compared and considered. While there are a lot of great headsets out there, each seemed to have it's own quirks and negatives that led to them being dropped from the list. (The ones with great battery life lacked surround simulation, the most comfortable sets had poor mic quality, the ones with the best audio only offered full surround sound on PC, some that almost seemed perfect required an external audio module that utilized unique software and drivers that were plagued with failed updates and a lack of support, etc). While I was content with the performance and features of the PS4 Gold/Platinum that carried over from the PS3 ones, I was hesitant because of the flimsy construction. All of the Gold headsets I ever used had broken hinges, so they were an absolute no. Just when I was getting ready to purchase the Platinum model, a pre-order popped up for this "New Gold" version. Since they both had the 50mm audio drivers that I was after, it seemed like the only difference was that the Platinum has true 3D audio (only Uncharted 4 and Horizon Dawn?) and the New Gold only has simulated surround, which has always been amazing. My headset never leaves the gaming room so there was no need for the collapsing feature. The New Gold eliminated the hinge and only came in a fixed construction, which seemed perfect for my use. I eagerly picked them up from the store and started unboxing right away. As I pulled them out, my first impression was that they are LIGHT! The weight drop from the PS3 to PS4 Gold/Platinum was minor compared to this New Gold version. My second observation was that the headband was completely covered in the same leather material as the ear cups. At first I was nervous since the primary reason for replacing my previous set was because of this material deteriorating. But I reminded myself that it didn't start until after 5 years and that my friend's Gold/Platinum sets weren't yet having those issues. I put them on my head and quickly realized that Sony finally achieved the right balance of secure and firm fitment while being extremely light and comfortable. One of the main issues with the Platinum headset is how uncomfortable the headband shape and materials are for extended periods of gaming. This New Gold just fits and feels perfect. The button layout was intuitive and the tactile sense felt great. It took all of about 2 seconds to get it set up, which is expected from these Sony headsets. My core games are Overwatch and Gran Turismo Sport, which both sounded absolutely amazing. My team confirmed the mic quality was perfect. I'd say this New Gold headset is the best Sony has ever released. And compared to the rest of the market, it's the best all-around PS4 headset for under $300. I'm very happy with my purchase, no regrets or buyer's remorse, and recommend them to anyone considering!

I had some Sony gold headphones a few years back and the dongle broke so I decided after a few years to bite the bullet and buy some more. Welp these gold headphones feels extremely cheap as if they really focused on maximizing their profits and using cheaper material. Overall same functions as last set and gets the job done.

I love my headset! I bought a black pair for my husband for Christmas and he loved them. So naturally i had to get myself a pair. I absolutely love them! The audio quality is amazing. I can hear everything! It also cancels outside noise so all you hear is your game which is amazing. I would definitely recommend this product. Definitely get your money worth. I absolutely love mine.

The best non-VR gaming headset for PS4

    |
    Posted .

Previously, I had the old Gold headset, which was great but had structural issues. After that, I got a Steelseries which was a total disappointment and returned it that same day. I decided to buy this New Gold PS4 headset, and I will never deviate again. Not only is the sound superior due to virtual surround sound, but you can also adjust between sound/chat levels. Sony greatly improved the structure on this model, so I have zero issues with it. Hands down the best non-VR gaming headset for PS4 (get the Platinum headset if you play a lot of VR).

Great sound, battery life is pretty decent at 6 to 8 hours. The sound quality is amazing, allowing me to hear both the game and anyone with whom you're partying chatting with. I would have liked to use this on other devices; however, it does bring a 3.5 mil jack cord to use as a standalone jack-in to controllers or other devices. Volume, controlling it and mute all work well. The color is solid as well. Highly recommend it if you like the wireless option. I will say the distance is a bit lackluster if you're going into another room but it might be expected with wireless options.

This is my second set of these (I broke the 1st pair). I have loved this headset since day one. The sound quality is amazing with the virtual surround sound (VSS) mode you can really hear where things are coming from, a great feature for anyone who plays PvP like CoD or Fortnite. The battery is decent, I can usually get 3-4 hours of gaming before I have to charge them and they charge with in an hour. The sound adjustments are also very nice as the headset has a a built in adjustment slider for game/party audio. No boom mike means nothing sitting in front of your face annoying you and it has a mute button to make sure you can turn off the mic when needed. I would 100% recommend these to anyone not just for PS4 they also work with my MAC and my TV This is a must have for all gamers One small side note: they get kinda hot with the leather wrapped ear pieces but the sound makes it all worth it.

I like them. Kind of sucks that I can hear all my back ground noise still. The turtle beach 300 have way better noise canceling but the turtle beach also have a cord and the mic generally breaks after 6 months of use. Other down side to these is these battery life isnt that great I have to charge every other day at playing 3 or 4 hours a day. It does have chat volume and game volume buttons which I do like. The microphone has a button to turn off and on. I like that there isn't any wire. Very convenient for me to do other things while waiting for the game to start. The range on the headset when you walk away from the ps4 isn't very far at all. It starts going in and out at 10ft away. If they could put the turtle beach 300 and these combined it would be perfect.

The main reason I purchased these headphones was for use with my PSVR. (If you have the means to get one I recommend it as they are a lot of fun) The standard earbuds that come with the headset were decent but I wanted something better and easier to share between people. While these are not the best headphones I've ever had, which I knew going in, I decided to purchase them because they were designed to fit well the PSVR. The main difference I noticed between the headphones and earbuds was that instead of just feeling like I'm in a world, I felt like that world actually existed around me. Simply put, the sound was fuller and clearer. Not to mention that unlike the earbuds, I didn't need to worry about adjusting them during more active game sessions. Also the build quality is rather decent. I never felt like I was ever going to accidentally break them in the few months I've been using them now. As for non-VR games, the sound quality is pretty good. You have the option to activate or deactivate the Virtual Surround Sound function at the press of a button on the headset. There are also a few games that have a preset audio option available, along with a few preset audio options. You can choose to make your own custom audio mix as well, although it is rather limited. You have the option to save a second audio option to the headset which you can switch at any time on the headset itself. For the most part, the headset fits comfortably but is just slightly too tight for long game sessions. Though I blame that on my large head. My biggest gripe with the headset would be its battery life. It lasts around 8hrs, which isn't that bad all by itself but when combined with needing to charge your controller after long game sessions you might run into a problem depending on your set up. Of course you have the option to use a wired connection but only stereo audio will be available when doing so. While the VSS gives a good simulated surround sound it somehow manages to make the headset lose a lot of its base. If base is important to you then you will likely either have to listen in stereo mode or find another headset. One other complaint I have is that the bluetooth function is only available through a USB dongle that comes with the headset. This means that not only do you use up an extra USB slot on your PS4 but it limits what devices the headset is compatible with. I cannot share an opinion on the quality of the microphone as I've not had an opportunity to properly test it out. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the Sony Gold headset and am happy with the extra life they bring out of my PSVR. As for standard gaming with them, they could be better but these will work fine for most people. 4 out of 5 stars

Product as described and great intermediate (affordable/quality) for PS4 gaming. No real issues with pairing headset with PS4. Instructions that came with headset are less than desirable so searched for more detailed instructions on PS4 website to complete paring and setup. Only issue encountered was figuring out how to hear other players in-game audio during multi-player online gaming. It was as simple as turning up "players" volume which is located opposite side of the game audio switch on the headset. Sound quality and microphone reception is above average compared to price of headset. Recommend.

    NOT a Microwave!!

    Posted .

Beware: This is not a Microwave, doesn't work if you're gaming under water and is NOT compatible with VHS players/Zune. Other than that, headset is great! I own the (now) older PS3/PS4 Gold Wireless Headset (for the last 8~ years) and never had issues with it. I do remember one night no one could hear me, and after hours of Googling I found out it's because I had the headset on backwards (left vs right) which makes sense with how the microphone is designed internally. Oops! Comparing this one to the old one (Gold), this feels more comfortable, and the audio sounds slightly better (but it's hard to say with just 1 night of use so far). Comparing this one to other headsets, well that gets ugly. As you know, there are countless headsets out there, and every gamer is going to say one is better than the other, some of them get paid via affiliate links/ads and what not, and you'll always have people compare a "wired" headset to a "wireless", or this one is cheaper, this one does 7.1, etc etc. To save you a little bit of Googling, this is one of the best WIRELESS headsets you can get that does 7.1 Surround Sound for it's PRICE. You'll always sacrifice something going another route. • You might find a cheaper headset, but it's wired. • You might find a one that's nicer and wireless, but it's more expensive. • You might find one that is the same price, wireless, but it's not 7.1 surround sound. • You might find one that's wireless, cheaper, and better, but it's not a headset, it's a horse. So in my humble opinion, this is the best 7.1 headset for it's price... and it's made by Sony and I always prefer to stick with same companies and not add too many 3rd parties to my stuff. Hope that helps!

Overall I'm happy with the headset. The build quality is better than the previous generation. The removal of the folding design was a good choice as that was the point of failure on my last pair of Sony Gold headset. The audio quality is decent for a wireless headset and amplification is pretty good. I was a bit skeptical of the mixer switch for game and chat audio but it can be useful. For competitive games with quieter audio I still prefer to use a quality wired headset and amplifier. This is a great option for couch gaming or on the go.

Good sound but frequent connection drops

    |
    Posted .

I mostly bought this to get a good headset to use with my PSVR, which this was designed to fit around. But I was also excited to have a wireless surround sound headset so I could play big games like god of war in the evening without disturbing my wife and child during evening hours. Sadly this headset is not what I had hoped it would be. I sit roughly 10 feet away from my PS4 and there are no obstructions to block the signal. Yet my headset would often lose the connection and I would hear nothing for 10-30 seconds before it would reestablish the connection. I wouldn’t mind if this happened infrequently but it happens several times each hour. It’s very disappointing to be listening to some cut scene only to have the audio blank out for 30 seconds and miss a key part of some conversation. So ultimately I ended up returning these. I wanted to love them and have them be a solution to my late night gaming without sacrificing audio fidelity but too many connection drops keep this one from being something I can recommend. Buy it for wired gameplay only as wireless is just spotty at best.

Only complaint is that I use these for gaming as well as watching Youtube/YoutubeTV and other media streaming services on my PS4 and the headphones seem to only hold about a 4 hour charge

I got these to enhance my gaming experience during the Quarantine. I’m really happy with these days , battery life lasts a long time and the different sound features really elevate your gaming experience to the next level. Definitely recommend these headphones because theirs no need for wired headphones anymore. All wired headphones break or stop working in a short amount of time. Won’t have to worry about that anymore with wireless Headphones! Must get this if you play video games often.

Glad I purchased these. Of course PlayStation 4 requires you to use one of their wireless headset to play audio wirelessly through the PS4. I was reluctant to purchase yet ANOTHER set of headphones but these are really great. Sound is great and are super comfortable. Only small small complaint is the functionality of some of the buttons on the headset can be confusing to get used to. Other than that highly recommend.

Good headphones that sound great and did not realize what I was missing..... On sale the value is good but full price I would have to compare more. The fit is OK as I wear glasses and prolonged wear, an hour, and it starts irritate my ear area. Combination of glasses and ear cup not being a little larger to really fit comfortably over the ear seems to be the issue. Good battery life and great surround sound. Has mic monitoring and a volume control to mix chat vs game sounds.
