With the football games posting a lot of soundtracks due to empty stadiums, I found that my old 2.1 was overwhelmed with noise and one couldn't hear the announcers. This 3.1 not only solved that problem, but the sound was so much superior in all aspects of watching sports and movies. A good tradeoff if one doesn't want to invest in a complete surround system.

Very good for music, TV and movies. Some issues when watching loud movies, with the dialog being hard to hear (even with Voice and Night mode). But overall we're very happy.

It does a great job filling the front soundstage, the center channel alone makes it worth it. Atmos is a mixed bag, it does sound better and you can get hints of 'height' in some sounds, but even with those caveats it does provide a fuller sound than previous Dolby codecs.

I actually find that I can't get away from it. We mounted on the wall, sit about 7' away and between the TV quality and the Sony sound bar quality, I feel like I'm sitting @ a movie theater!

Sony knows how to do sound, and the HT-G700 is more sound than the average ear probably needs. We were happy with the Sony TV speakers, but now that we added the soundbar, we realize what we were missing. We would highly recommend it - well worth the money.

Great soundbar, but with three fatal flaws

However, it takes a LOT of tweaking, many of its sound modes degrade sound quality, and most problematically: the sound cuts out frequently when running Atmos content (although it might just be a defective unit?). I have done some research on this matter and the solution might be to use the highest-end type of HDMI cable (48gbps), but I have another soundbar which delivers Atmos perfectly fine under the same conditions with normal high speed w/ethernet HDMI cables. Because of the sound issues, I cannot recommend this bar and will be returning it, though as said previously, it may just be a defective unit (it WAS purchased "Used - Satisfactory").

If you still have the unit, we'd love to troubleshoot the issue and make this a better experience for you. In the meantime, please check these steps to troubleshoot and isolate the issue.
If the sound skips or has noise.
If there is a device nearby that generates electromagnetic waves, such as a wireless LAN or a microwave oven in use, locate the system apart from it.
If there is an obstacle between the bar speaker and the subwoofer, move or remove it.
Do not cover the top of the bar speaker with metal objects such as TV frame, etc. Wireless functions may become unstable.
Locate the bar speaker and the subwoofer as close as possible.
Switch the wireless LAN frequency of any nearby wireless LAN router or PC to 5 GHz range.
Switch the network connection of the TV or Blu-ray Disc player from wireless to wired.
Also, please make sure the unit is up to date as this will improve the overall performance of the HT-G700 Soundbar.

It's randomly cut out once, but other than that no major issues. I'm not sure if this is a normal thing but it is slow to come on when switching to Atmos mode. But the sound is amazing. Really fills the room.

For the audio cut, please make sure that the soundbar is up to date with the firmware (version 1.055) as this will improve the overall performance of the soundbar. Unplug the Soundbar power cord and plug it back in
1. Turn off the soundbar.
2. Unplug the power cable from the wall outlet.
3. After one minute, replug the power cable back to the wall outlet.
4. Turn on the soundbar.
Verify if this resolves the issue.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable or the optical digital cable and then reconnect it
- Disconnect the cable from the soundbar and playback device and then reconnect the cable.
If the issue is resolved, the issue may have been caused by a faulty connection with the cable.
- If there is a device nearby that generates electromagnetic waves, such as a wireless LAN or a microwave oven in use, locate the system apart from it.
- If there is an obstacle between the bar speaker and the subwoofer, move or remove it.
- Do not cover the top of the bar speaker with metal objects such as TV frame, etc. Wireless functions may become unstable.
- Locate the bar speaker and the subwoofer as close as possible
