The subwoofer is designed for playback of bass or low frequency sound. Please check the following for troubleshooting:
• When the input source does not containmuch bass sound, such as in TV programs, the bass sound from the subwoofer may be difficult to hear.
• SW +/– does not work when the subwoofer is not connected.

|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Sound is likely the most important criteria when selecting speakers and sound equipment, and rightly so. The Sony HT-G700 does have great sound. The main speaker is around 40” which is larger than a lot of sound bars out there. The subwoofer is quite large too, dwarfing the Vizio this Sony is replacing. The large size of the equipment should mean better sound and does, for the most part though the bass seems to be a little underwhelming considering the size of the woofer. With the subwoofer volume up all the way you can definitely feel it, just seems as though there is more left in the box. The HT-G700 has a speaker dedicated to voices, as well as a voice sound mode in which the sound focuses most on voices. The overall clarity is great, though the mids and highs seem capped at times. There are multiple sound modes you can choose from to get the best sound for the subject matter you are watching or listening to. It also includes a “Night Mode” that reduces bass and emphasizes mids and highs for watching at night. The system also claims to have Dolby Atmos capabilities but all the speakers housed in the sound bar are forward-firing, nothing is specifically directed upwards so the effect of Dolby Atmos is virtual. Of course with basically a center channel and a sub you won’t get true surround sound anyway. It is a bit gimmicky in my opinion but I do hear sound bouncing off the walls during Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Overall I would rate the sound 8/10. Features can make or break a product. The HT-G700 has a lot to offer in the way of features, they are just tough to figure out at first. The user interface is just bad. Many audio systems I have owned in the past have had a menu that will populate on the TV so you can navigate the setup of the device. This unit uses a five character lcd menu (digital alarm clock style) for the entire setup process. I’m talking about only seeing five characters at a time in a scrolling fashion like it's 1999. There is no app to connect to, nor internet connection to be made with the HT-G700. This is probably the hardest thing for me to swallow with this unit. I’m not sure why, in 2020, anyone develops a product like this without internet connectivity. In Sony’s defense, you can connect to the sound bar via bluetooth for your music or podcasts. That is a nice feature to have, I am just used to casting where you rely on your WiFi signal as opposed to a 33ft bluetooth range. If your smart TV or streaming device (Roku, Fire Stick) has the ability to cast, you can still stream that way. The only thing with that is it uses the TV and streaming box as opposed to just a direct sound bar connection. As far as features go, I’d give it 7/10. Hardware seems to be a strong point with this system. The remote is a narrow, somewhat awkward device to hold. The nice part about it is you have dedicated buttons for your sound modes (I think they did this because they know the UI is frustrating to use.) There is a dedicated up and down control for the subwoofer which I am a big fan of. It comes with the batteries as Sony almost always provides and overall it works really well. The speaker is heavy and feels like it has a very solid build. The subwoofer has a mostly matte finish with a glossy tube for the bass to flow from. Hardware gets 9/10. Overall the Sony HT-G700 is a great sound bar. The setup is clunky but once you get through it the sound buttons on the remote make it tolerable. The lack of the ability to cast is disappointing but at least you can connect via bluetooth to play music. The sound is pretty great overall, I really like the clear vocals and the ability to use a night mode for quiet times. The Dolby Atmos provides a decent type of virtual surround sound.

For the volume level please make sure that the night mode is disabled. Night mode function outputs the sound at low volume with minimum loss of fidelity and clarity of dialogue. Something is wrong with the sound leveling

Unfortunately I am not experiencing any enveloping surround sound no matter how much I tried to adjust the settings. The advertisement showing graphical waves of sound coming from all sides looks of course attractive but reality for me is different. Another issue is with the sound level inconsistency between LPCM and Dolby sources. The levels are way too different. For instance I set YouTube volume to 30, then when I watch a movie or a show on Vudu, Fandango or Hulu with real Dolby encoding - I can hardly hear anything at the level 30 that I previously set for the YouTube app. So I raise the volume to like 40 or 45 to hear movies or shows, encoded in Dolby, comfortably. After watching those shows I switch back to YouTube and get immediately knocked out with a loud sound set to 45, so I have to constantly use the remote to move the volume either up or down when the sources change. Very, very inconvenient. I hope Sony will offer a firmware update soon to resolve these issue with inconsistent sound leveling between LPCM and Dolby sources. I am not hoping to have their proprietary IAE functionality to be resolved, we all should just admit that 3.1 system is simply insufficient to offer anything close to 5.1 let alone 7.1.2 - there are not enough channels on this bar and its 3 speakers are lined up in front, facing front, very close to each other. If you really want to listen to DTS:X or Dolby Atmos with sound coming from above, sides and from behind - get the system that offers discreet speakers for each channel, yep, need to be installed on the ceiling and behind you. Other customers who complained about subwoofer effects being unnoticeable, are correct. The same here.
