Sony’s attempt at an open design/style wireless earbuds works great but not without some features sacrificed, that many consider a standard. The current price point would suggest otherwise. But price aside; LinkBuds does aim at what it targets to do. Link both online & offline worlds together. From eco packing to recycled plastics to make the buds & case themselves; Sony is in the right direction. There are subtle flakes in the colors of buds & case. Sound signature is great with audio quality that comes balanced. Use with the app can help with audio by tweaking the equalizer. Calls made sound clear. Choosing the right ear fins helps to get the right fit. The “wide tap” feature is something I’ve never expected but works great. It’s very lightweight and the case is very compact. A few features carry over from the wf1000xm4; speak to chat & dsee. The design is bold with literally a hole in the center of the driver. This allows “ambient” sound in naturally. There is no ANC, No Transparency Mode (Technically), and No Wireless Charging; to name a few. These are in line with AirPods (excluding Pro) & Galaxy Live. If the budget allows then I would recommend these.

I can barely tell these are in mainly due to the lightweight and the way they anchor themselves. I have oddball ears one side i have the short band on other ear long to be comfortable. I have to pry these out to remove them huge contrast from the xm4s i have that feel like their gonna fall out due to weight. The trick with these is getting the buds to "float" in the ear to where pressure is equaled. These are most definately loud...whoever says the opposite must be wearing them wrong. It isnt until i yell loudly than i can hear myself at loud volume to give an idea of the loudness. Sound quality is really good yes they lack bass but highs n mids sound clear. Toying with the eq settings helps. With volume off and these still in hearing is normal theirs really no reason to take them out which is nice. Overall im happy with them though they should have included wireless charging from the xm4s for the price. Also i think these could have really benefitted having a velvet or silicon sleeve covering applied to cushion the plastic from the ear.

I’ve owned a pair of these since 2022. To begin with the sound quality and functionality was excellent. After a year the speakers on the left started going out and the battery life started decreasing rapidly. They are supposed to hold a four hour in use charge. As of today they won’t even charge so if you’re looking for longevity and bang for your buck this isn’t the route you want to going everyday use. Especially for the 150+ price tag.

I purchased these earbuds a hair over a year ago, and in summary - don't buy them. There are several things that I really like about them. I work in an environment that requires a certain level of awareness, and the majority of earbuds out there employ both passive and active noise cancelling - I don't want to constantly toggle "ambient mode" or whatever each manufacturer calls it. So when I saw these goofy lil things with holes in them, it seemed like the perfect fit for me. And in a lot of ways, that's correct - I can listen to music and still be able to hear essentially everything going on around me. They're also quite light, and the case is small, so I can throw them in my pocket and occasionally forget that they're even there. Finally, while there are a lot of things I'd like to see improvements on, I feel like the app expands functionality (such as adjusting EQ) enough to justify having it. Unfortunately that's where the good things end. The buds are just not worth buying, especially if you plan on keeping them long term (which should absolutely be the case when you're paying this much). - The case visually looks like it's degrading. I'm not sure if it's a top coat or what, but the case is now splotchy in spots. Purely aesthetic, but that matters to some people. - The holes of the buds (not the cool hole that I bought these for, but the little holes the sound actually comes from) themselves fill up with ear gunk. Gross, I know, and not unique to these, but I don't feel comfortable enough with digging that crud out without accidentally stabbing the bud's internals. - The sound is... well they have holes in them. That, coupled with absolutely NO passive sound cancellation means that these lack all bass and a healthy amount of mids in general use. If you're in a quiet place or boost the volume, you'll get a wider profile, but in general don't expect these to be more than background noisemakers for your head holes. - THE BATTERY. Look, I understand that itty bitty earbuds are gonna have itty bitty batteries, but the battery life on mine degrading to a shocking degree. As of now, 1 year after purchase, the right earbud maxes out at 45% battery and drains at about 1% per minute. The case ALSO drains faster than usual. These went from an advertised battery life of 5 ish hours to a functional life of less than an hour. This is absolutely unacceptable. - The case design could use some work. The buds are held in with magnets which is good, but they 'click' into place (there's a small latch mechanism that holds them in), and that seems to have introduced some variability of if the buds detect themselves as in the case. There have been multiple times I've put them away, and an hour later noticed that my phone was still playing music through one of them which thought that it was in my ear. I'll be replacing these, but not with another set, and probably not with another set of Sonys. Battery issues seem to be rampant with their earbuds, so I'll be exploring other options going forward. If you wanna spend almost $200 for less than a year of use, be my guest. But I wouldn't recommend you do so.

      Hi Brett,

Thanks for sharing your review and experience with the Sony LinkBuds. We're glad that you like the fit, size, and dedicated app of the headphones. Your feedback about the earbud design, charging case, sound quality, and battery life is greatly appreciated.

Make sure to wear the LinkBuds properly. If the headset is not worn properly in your ears, tap operations or Speak-to-Chat speech detection may not work correctly, or you may not obtain the correct sound qualities or call performance. M-sized fitting supporters come attached to the left and right units of the headset at the time of purchase. When the headset is worn following the procedures described above and you feel the size of the fitting supporters does not fit your ears, change the fitting supporters to another size to comfortably and snugly fit your left and right ears.

You can also use the Equalizer/CLEAR BASS setting of the Sony Headphones Connect app to fine-tune the sound quality to your needs.

For more information, please refer to these links:

      https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/linkbuds/v1/en/contents/TP1000447718.html

When using the charging case, make sure to set both earbuds on the case properly. Put the left unit of the headset (the unit with the tactile dot) back into the left hole of the charging case, put the right unit of the headset back into the right hole of the charging case, insert the units until they click, and then make sure that the units are locked in the charging case. Set the headset into the charging case, and when the indicator (orange or green) on the charging case lights up, close the lid of the charging case.

For battery issues, resetting and initializing the headset may help resolve those issues. You may refer to the steps on these links:

Sounds good. Allows clear background audio, just as intended. Doesn’t fall with light jogging. Feels really nice and light. Wide area tap, (tapping on your temple) works great. However, if you cough twice in quick succession, it registers as tap. But that’s not super frequent and totally manageable. Sound quality is good. Crisp highs and decent lows. Comparable to AirPods Pro. Also, great job packing Sony! Everything is paper and eco conscious. Hopefully we’ll see it across other products and other brands.

They are good headphones for me. I had used in-ear headphones but sometimes they are not comfortable. I decided to look for an option and this is the best for me. I forgot that I brought them, although they do not have noise cancellation. The sound is good and the battery life is excellent. They pair quite well on my PC and mobile, although if you are looking for noise cancellation this option is not available on these headphones.

I was quite excited to preorder and try these earbuds out, as I am the type of person who likes to hear their surroundings without fully being disconnected/unaware of things going on around them. The moment I opened the box, it was great to see how small the charging case was, but as soon as I opened it and put the buds in, I knew that they weren't for me. I don't have small ears or ears with a weird design, so I would say the experience might be the same for a lot of people, they simply are horrendous with their fit and the need to adjust them constantly. Long term usage, wearing them in your ears, they don't feel as comfortable or secure as most buds. I have the Galaxy Buds Live, and those do a concept that's very similar in practice to these, and they do it much, much better. I had dropouts with music, touch controls wouldn't work, etc. I am a huge Sony fan, but these aren't refined at all for the market. Stay away for now. Get some Galaxy Buds Pros, Lives, Airpods, anything else.

Hi Shane, While we appreciate your excitement about the WFL900 wireless earbuds, we are sorry about how you felt with them. This is definitely not the experience we want you to have. In the meantime, please check out our help guide link: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/linkbuds/v1/en/index.html. On this link you can find instructional videos on how to find the perfect fit for the headphones which will help getting a better comfort. In the same link you can also find troubleshooting steps regarding playback. The LinkBuds may be small but that doesn’t mean they’re difficult to use. With Wide Area Tap, you can use double or triple taps in front of either of your ears to control your music playback—so there’s no need to touch the LinkBuds themselves to operate. To adjust operation of your LinkBuds, tap between the earlobe and the fovea, and from above the auricle to below the earlobe. The headset may not operate correctly due to coughing or when attaching/detaching accessories around the ears. When the headset reacts incorrectly, turn Wide Area Tap off using the “Sony | Headphones Connect” app.

Only used at work for about 4-5 hrs a day for music. Started at about 730 am and usually lasts until 11. About a 30-45 minute charge gets through the day. Worked great. Could hear people talking and phone calls around work. Have conversations. They are buggy here and there, not registering touch or skipping, but nothing a quick reset back in the case and then out again wouldn't fix. Noticed one earbud was fitting weird one day and I pulled it out of my ear and the small speaker cover was hanging off. Dropped from pocket height maybe 2-3 times in the case.... No damage to earbuds or anything. The little black line of glue is dissolved...either form earwax or cleaning them with alcohol wipes.. either way.. warranty is void because of "physical damage".

These earbuds are a great fit depending on yours needs. Here let me explain: Fit: so due to the "donut" design and on ear vs in ear like most earbuds there probably only gonna fit "most" but not all, with that said they my ears just fine but definitely losen over long wearing sessions, there are different size "fins" to help with fit but the smaller ones work best for me. Audio: the sound on these are amazing for what they are, these are designed to have a open ear sound meaning when you listen to audio the natural sound around is let in because of the "donut" design which works great tho I would of preferred a "transparent" mode added on top instead of relying on just the design alone, but they do what is intended, Calls: now this is where these sign the most to be honest, there's 4 mics, (2 on each bud) to help with phone calls and they block so much background noise from calls there great at it, so these are my go to when taking calls because the transparent design and well balanced mics make calls a breeze, My only complaint is the charging case it's so smooth and rounded that it's like holding soap lol

These Sony Link-Buds are so cool in my opinion. They are so light and pretty small in a good way and have a compact little charger case that you can take on the go with you and use it to charge them at some point when needed during the day or night. When you go out is what I’m trying to say. They play great sounding audio. They get loud and have some bass to them. The call clarity is great. I can access Siri very easily with them. They have this cool feature where you can tap your finger on your head right in front of the buds. There are 1 tap, 2 tap. Triple tap functions. Play/pause and volume control. I hear the Audie and can hear everything around me. It is so helpful to me because I don’t feel like I’m missing a knock on the door or a phone call. These Link-Buds are worth the price. They are new and innovative and I like how much they have going on for them for such lightweight and small buds. They also don’t stick out if you ears very much. Sleek design and the fit is sturdy and comfortable. I can shake my head side to side and up and down vigorously and they stay in place. $178 is a lot but once I got them, opened em up and started using them I hadn’t thought about the price until now. I think they are so cool. Very easy to connect also and have an app and can play 360 degree audio.

What’s great? The fact that I can hear music and my surroundings is awesome These ear buds are very compact, a plus. Battery life is not great after 2hrs they die. Charges a bit slow and when ever I receive a call or yawn to intensely they hang up on my call. Not happy with this $198.00 purchase. I was going to trade them in but Best Buy will only give me $18… uh not for a product I purchased a few months ago. What a con.

      Hi KHolmes,

Thanks for reaching out to us with your concern. While we're happy you like the open-ring design of the unit, it's unfortunate to learn you've been running into some issues, particularly with the battery life and the headset reacts incorrectly or works unintentionally. Wide area tap is a function that detects vibration around the ears with the acceleration sensors that are built into the headset and determines the tap operations. Therefore, it may be erroneously detected as tapped by actions such as putting on or taking off surgical masks or glasses, and chewing. If the headset often does not operate correctly, this may be improved by using the Sony Headphones Connect app to turn wide area tap off and switch to headset tap instead.

If the available operating time is short or the battery power does not last long. Check the Available operating time in your model's Help Guide for operating times of the headphones on a fully-charged battery: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/linkbuds/v1/en/contents/TP1000447703.html

If you run the above settings at the same time, the available operating time of the battery becomes even shorter.
Note: Be sure to store the headphones in the charging case after use. If the headphones are placed in a pocket or bag, they may recognize that they are being worn and turn on by mistake.

We also recommended updating the firmware of the headphones (via the Sony Headphones Connect app) for optimum performance. Should you need further assistance, please let us know so we can turn your experience around. You may send us an email at [email protected] with the following details:

Only ear buds I can wear for hours

These are the only in ear buds that I have owned that do not hurt my ears and can wear hours at a time. I have tried ALL the other ones. I like the fact they are NOT noise canceling I like being able to hear around me working outside. The sound from music on these does a great job of drowning out the noise anyways. If you ever had issues wearing in ear ear buds give these a try! I LOVE them!

Very dissapointed about this earbuds. To buy a $200 set of earbuds and have a poor audio quality (my daughters ($30 skull candy sound way better) no bass at all and for some songs it sounds like the driver is going to come apart. I would compare the sound quality that you get from it to a cheap set of airplane wire buds. Returning them asap.

Thank you for reaching out to us. We're sorry to hear we were not able to meet your expectations with the sound quality of the Sony LinkBuds. Hi Marlon,

I had seen reviews about these earphones being an amazing alternative to others that have a transparency mode and that they were pretty comfortable, but only found they were the opposite, at least for me. They are uncomfortable, and the earphones have to be placed in your ear at the perfect, impossible to achieve, angle to get the loudest sound, and even then, they don’t sound like a $179 product. The packaging is compact and the earphones are well built, but very light. It’s case is about the size of the original AirPods but use a latch system, rather than magnetic. As for the “open back” part of these earphones, it will always be difficult to hear most things when you’re listening to music at the same time, so it’s pretty counter intuitive IMO, so sure, it works when you’re not listening to anything. Overall, I will be returning these.

Hi raym, Thank you for the feedback on your experience with the Sony Linkbuds. We are sorry to hear that you these earphones had to be returned due to issues with comfort and design. For comfort we recommend changing the fitting of the supporters to another size to ensure a comfortable and snug fit. Also, these earbuds features our Integrated Processor V1 which reproduces all the detail in your music with minimal distortion for an authentic listening experience in which you can enjoy a well-balanced, high-quality sound with a clear mid-high range and comfortable open-ring design that naturally blends ambient sound with digital sound.

The Ultra-small and light design gives you the ability to listen to music, take calls and game all while still connecting with the world around you and it also has Adaptive Volume Control feature which optimizes sound to your environment. They will raise or lower the volume based on your surroundings.

Hopefully you'll still consider our Sony products in the future. Again, thank you for sharing your feedback. Regards, -Craig Sony_US

I received the Sony Linkbuds from Sony to review. They had no control over or input with this review. I was really excited about these headphones when I read about them online a couple weeks ago and was ready to drop the $180 for them on release since I work in a supervisory position in my job and constantly have people talking to me but also wanted to have my music playing when things slowed down. I have noise cancelling earbuds but the transparency function sounds like I have a seashell up to my ear everyday and I don't like it. So these, as they were intended, are perfect for my day to day life. Pros: - The design is cool, the chrome hole reminds me of those expensive Apple wheels for the Mac Desktop. And the white color has speckles that looks nice. - Setup and connecting to phone is pretty simple. Need to download Sony Headphones app to take full advantage of all the functions and features. - Large tap area to perform the designated functions on both buds. Can be customized in the app. - Sounds decent, won't blow you away but are good enough for their intended purpose. Cons: - Case doesn't charge wirelessly - Battery life is a bit disappointing as you'll need to charge them during the day. - Getting them in the ear takes some practice and time to get right. - The ring part that sits in the ear isn't adjustable so if you have small ears, they will hurt during/after extended use and the lockdown "wingtips" help but can also cause pain. So I'd like to see more adjustable fit options for a more comfortable fit in the next iteration of the LinkBuds.

      Hi Darius,

      Thanks for commenting!

We are so happy to hear you are satisfied with the amazing feature- like the Speak-to-Chat function, stylish color & design, ease of setup, Wide area tap, great sound quality, and overall performance of our WF-L900.

We greatly appreciate your input with the wireless charging, battery life, driver unit, and on wearing these LinkBuds.

As you know these LinkBuds comes with different sizes of fitting supporter to suit different ear shapes. To reduce discomfort while wearing the headset, try to change the fitting supporters to another size that fits your ears better. The size of the left and right fitting supporters may be different. ref: https://helpguide.sony.net/mdr/linkbuds/v1/en/contents/TP1000456408.html

And for the battery life, the available operating times of the headset with the battery fully charged are as follows:
      • Bluetooth connection
Music playback time (AAC): Max. 5.5 hours
Music playback time (SBC): Max. 5 hours
      • About 90 minutes of music playback is possible after 10 minutes charging.
      • If you set the following functions, the available operating time of the battery becomes shorter than the ones described above.
      - DSEE™
      - Equalizer
      - Speak-to-Chat
      - Function to launch the voice assist function by your voice
      - Service Link
      - Adaptive Volume Control

      Notes:
      • If you run the above settings at the same time, the available operating time of the battery becomes even shorter.
      • Depending on the settings for the headset functions and usage conditions, the speed of energy consumption for the rechargeable battery may vary between the left and right units. However, this is not a malfunction.
      • When you have finished using the headset, be sure to set the headset in the charging case. If the headset is placed in the pockets, etc., the headset recognizes that the headset is worn, and it may turn on by mistake.
      • Be sure to close the lid of the charging case to prevent the battery of the charging case from being consumed.
      • When talking on the phone, the available operating time of the battery is shorter than when playing music.
