Great DSLR replacement

After years of using Nikon DSLR's I noticed myself taking less pictures due to the weight and bulkiness (D90 D5100 and a drop in picture quality due to D5100 settings, always getting noise#
So I researched compact systems and decided on Sony after many, many articles and reviews. I bought the bundled NEX-6 with extra 16-50mm & 55-210mm, I half expected I would return it due to the price tag and performance... In fact I forgot all about the price tag when I started using this awesome compact system. Easy to carry.. Does not hurt/pull on my neck. Easy to use... Menu's & instructions are simple and I was ready to go as soon as the battery charged. Picture and video quality was incredible... Low light, close up pictures have all come out great as has video. I can not express how happy I am with this purchase. I have had only two blurred pictures out of the hundreds I have taken regardless of what setting I had it on or the environment #accidentally changed settings and camera compensated ) I am still at the beginning stages with this camera and only expect more satisfaction as I continue using this compact system.
The only con is the remote control app through Wi-Fi is outright lame. Something that should be the coolest feature has no options of any kind, it does not do video... only pictures and the delay is so bad it is pretty much useless.

The way of the future

I have owned the Nikon D5100 and Nikon D7000 both which share the same Sony 16.1MP Sensor as this Sony NEX 6. I made the switch because I just could not see myself carrying around such a large black box to take pictures, not when the future of the APS-C sensor camera's are here now with the likes of the Sony Nex family of camera's. The sensor is the same size as the camera's mentioned above so the image quality is the same both day and night shots. As many features as the larger camera's and a few new once as well, just like the larger DX format camera's this camera allows to go manual and adjust as many features as the pro's. In my opinion the DX format is a dinosaur format its biggest advantage to the Nex is if you should have large hands and need the extra real estate to fit it. This is a fun easy to carry and store system, you can download apps that help bring more flavor to your pictures creating endless variations of creativity. I am glad I made the switch. Note the Nikon and Canon variations of this Nex system camera are a few years behind, they have smaller sensors and either poor viewfinders or non at all the nearest competitor to this camera from another make would be the Olympus OM-D E-M5 which is hundreds more does not have as good a viewfinder but is weather and dust sealed. I rate this Sony NEX 6 Camera a 5 star product

Perfect for transition from point and shoot to Pro

I thought it would be a stressful transition going from a small point and shoot camera into a DSLR. I knew nothing about the mirror less systems until i started to do some research.
I am glad that I made the decision for a NEX system. I didn't need to spend the extra on the NEX7, but LOVE the viewfinder of the NEX6! It took me all but twenty minutes to find my way around the camera itself.
I have had and used this camera for a year now and still astonish my friends with my camera, compared to their systems they have for thousands of dollars more than i spent.

Love the small size. Quality of pics is great . having fun with HDR effect.
Wish there was a separate charger for battery. You charge battery through camera ( there are chargers made by other companies). If you can afford it,get it!

SLR quality, half the weight

After shooting 10+ years with a Nikon D70 --> D60 --> D90, I eventually got tired of carrying around such a large device, but still wasn't ready to give it all up and replace it with a simple point and shoot (or iPhone). That's when a guy from my work told me to check out the Sony NEX series.
To say the least, the picture quality is equal to or better than my Nikon. The best part is my shoulder doesn't get tired of carrying it around on long trips.
I originally bought the NEX-5R, but returned it for the NEX-6 for the viewfinder and pop-up flash. However I don't think I've used the flash 5-times in the past three months, the low light ability to take pictures is great. So now I'm wondering if the additional $200 was worth it.
I use the wifi to transfer photos to my iPad, but you have to be patient, it takes a while if you're uploading a lot of pics.
The only complaint I have about this camera is the charger. It plugs into the camera. I would have preferred a "battery charger" device (useful if you have two batteries).
Great job Sony!

Great camera as long as it doesn't break.

I have been using this camera for about 9 months. Up to this point the camera has been great. The camera is very small and with the retractable lens this camera is very easy to carry around and travel with. It is very comfortable to hold and after learning the manual functions the camera produces great photos.
The bad. After 9 months of use the lens will not protract from its closed position. I sent the camera in for warranty repair and was told the Sony repair facility will not repair a broken motor in the lens without me first paying for a new zoom ring on the outside of the lens. $80 dollars for a zoom ring that has a normal wear and tear scratch from use. I think Sony tried to find an issue with the camera to help cover the warranty repair cost. So...if you want to make sure Sony covers a warranty repair don't ever take it out of the box after you by it. It will not get scratched that way!

The NEXt Big thing is Small
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Coming fr prosumer Nikons, this little power house comes loaded with the same sensor as the bigger Nikons, a fast hybrid phase and contrast detection AF and that top tier EVF. The body has a high quality build and it is solid to hold and point for photo composition. The downside is the kit lens has vignetting and significant distortion on the wide end. You cannot expect to get the same IQ from a D7000 + 35mm 1.8 at the same price point. For $1000 it would really sum up to a smaller rig with a less than stellar IQ or a chunky DSLR with tack sharp IQ. But yes, this small, feature loaded mirrorless camera is the NEXt big thing!

Mislead on what wifi could do

The day I purchased this camera the Sony Representative was in the store and I was looking at another Sony brand of camera and he directed me to the NEX-6, showed me the features and I did like the WiFi capability. I specifically asked him if I could send still shots AND videos to my smartphone and then upload the video to youtube and he advised that I could. After getting the camera home; uploading the programs and such it was time to use the WiFi; took some nice photo and videos of my horses that I wanted to send to youtube and after going on the enclosed CD and reading the manual that is where I found out that you can only send still shots to the Smartphone.
Also on the videos if you put the chip into your computer and try to download to youtube that way you have to use the play memories program and change the format before you can upload.
So these were both deal breakers, nice camera just didn't do what I needed it to do.

Got out of hobby few years ago...recently wanted to
Get back into it bought big Nikon dslr.
Liked camera but a bit awkward to use and carry around
Read reviews on this model .Has just about everything
That Nikon had(including same sensor but improved)
Lot easier to carry plus includes wifi with apps to download for different features. Size and features will make me use this camera more and
Make it a fun hobby again. Also has great build quality and state of the art
