Been a Sony electronics fan forever, until now. The subwoofer stopped working and doesn't even turn on. Others have had the same issue so Sony should take note that this product is defective.

I didn't liked the sound of this bass speaker at all
Hi JoelM, We regret to hear that the bass sound quality of this subwoofer did not live up to your expectations. Please follow the steps below to ensure optimal listening experience:
-Press SW + or BASS + on the remote control of a compatible model to increase the subwoofer volume. -Set the night mode to off. For details, refer to the Operating Instructions supplied with a compatible model. -If the input sources contain very little bass sound components (i.e., a TV broadcast), the sound from the subwoofer may be difficult to hear. Bought it to connect to other speaker and was told at store you can connect to type of speaker as long as it’s the same brand. Later, found out that only certain types can connect to each other.

I recently picked up a Sony A5000 soundbar and wanted to improve the bass performance beyond what was offered by the soundbar out of the box. There are two compatible subwoofers for this system, the SW3 which is 200watts and the SW5 that is 300watts. I ended up with the SW3 and I'm not upset about it but didn't gain quite as much as I would have hoped for. I would likely roll the dice with the more powerful SW5 to see if it provided the punch I am seeking. Don't get me wrong, it is a noticeable improvement over using just the soundbar by itself but I didn't gain the glass rattling performance I was hoping for. Build quality is nice and set-up was extremely easy, just plug it in and turn on the soundbar it will automatically sync up. Just waiting for someone to step-up the subwoofer performance on a soundbar system so that it can truly be considered an alternative for a traditional system with a dedicated receiver.
Hi Alex, Glad to hear that you are happy with your purchase! With 200 W of deep bass sound from a powerful 160 mm driver, this bass reflex subwoofer boosts the impact of everything you watch and listen to. Feel the deep rumble of thunder and heavy bass beats without distortion. You’ll also hear clearer voices and extra fidelity for truly authentic soundtracks. This wireless subwoofer gives you a more cinematic surround sound experience. Thank you for choosing Sony! -Carl

This subwoofer is pretty underwhelming. Even in a small room it leave more to be desired. It does pair very well and easily to the Sony soundbar. I haven’t had any issues with dropout. I just wish it were louder.
Thank you for sharing your feedback on the Sony SA-SW3. We are really sorry to know the bass sound of your SA-SW3 subwoofer didn't live up to your expectations. Please allow us to help you and turn this into a better experience. To ensure that you are getting the most out of your audio system, make sure to run Sound Field Optimization so that the audio system can calibrate its performance to your environment, and that it sounds like it was engineered to be in your room.
For the bass sound quality, this usually depends on the size of the listening room, and the location that the subwoofer is placed in the room. To enhance your overall bass sound listening experience, follow the steps below:
• Press SW volume + or BASS + on the remote control of a compatible model to increase the subwoofer volume. • Set the night mode to off. For details, refer to the Operating Instructions supplied with a compatible model. • If the input sources contain very little bass sound components (i.e., a TV broadcast), the sound from the subwoofer may be difficult to hear. You can check the subwoofer sound by emitting the test tone. For your reference, please visit the links below if there is no sound or only a very low-level sound is heard from the subwoofer.

Will not connect to Sony Bravia Theater Bar 8 with 11 speakers
Hi EDBG, We're sorry to hear about the issue you're having. It appears that you are experiencing connectivity issues between the SASW3 subwoofer and the Sony BRAVIA Theater Bar 8. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the issue:
Make sure that both the subwoofer and the soundbar are updated to the latest software version. You can check for updates in the Sony | BRAVIA Connect app under Settings → Software update.
Open the Sony | BRAVIA Connect app and navigate to Settings → Wireless Speaker Settings. Set the Wireless Channel to Auto. If the issue persists, change the setting to Group. Additionally, set the Wireless Playback Quality to Priority on Stable Connection.
Ensure that the control box and speakers are not too far apart and that there are no obstacles between them. If possible, move them closer together and remove any obstacles.
Thank you for the review and we're sorry to hear what happened with your subwoofer. Power reset both soundbar and subwoofer, simply unplug the unit and wait 1-2 minutes then plug the device back in and power on. If the connection is not established automatically, check this article below to perform the manual connection. Check "Installation" in the file.

A worthy addition to your Sony Soundbar

The Sony HT-A5000 Soundbar is quite the machine. I will give a disclosure; I have only used this soundbar with the optional Sony rear speakers and subwoofer. I imagine this soundbar on its own would still sound great. However, with the add on equipment it sounds mind bogglingly incredible. When you consider how simple this system is to setup, how minimalist it is and how well it blends into your room, this is hard to compete with. I am coming from a $700 soundbar with rear speakers and subwoofer as well so it’s a reasonable question to ask: “what does the extra $1200 or so get me?”. Well, to my surprise its basically incomparable. This system is on a whole other level. The sound stage it produces it just unbelievable, you won’t believe it comes from such a small form. The Dolby Atmos feature can be hit or miss depending on your room. My living room is a rectangle with a nice flat ceiling, about 10ft tall. The Atmos feature for me has been a game changer. It seems to depend heavily on the title you are watching too. The good news is most new action/thriller/exciting movie supports it. Also, most streaming services are supporting it as well. It’s kind of like the early days of HD or even 4K. The adopting has been slow, but if you are jumping in now, there’s plenty of titles for you to enjoy. The other good news is that Dolby Atmos is not necessary to enjoy the quality of this system. Even if you are watching a good old fashion movie, its phenomenal. If you are thinking about getting this soundbar, strongly consider adding the rear speakers and the subwoofer. If you already have the soundbar and are reading this review trying to decide whether you should add the rear speakers or sub, then just do it. The system as a whole will transform your experience.
Wow! Thank you for taking the time to write such an in-depth review of your experience with the all-new HT-A5000 Soundbar, SA-RS3S Wireless Rear Speakers, and SA-SW3 subwoofer. We are extremely pleased it suits your needs & expectations! We are also delighted you are satisfied with the exceptional sound quality of your new audio system- especially when watching movies with or without Dolby Atmos content.
For the SA-SW3, we hope that the 200 watts of power is successfully filling your room with deep, rich bass. Make sure to run Sound Field Optimization through your paired A-Series audio system so that the subwoofer calibrates its performance to the surrounding environment.
Thank you so much for your honest review & for recommending our products and for choosing Sony!

You're reading this because you're considering the Sony HTA5000 soundbar for your widescreen tv and maybe you're wondering if the soundbar alone is enough. It's not. Buy this. You won't regret it.
To be clear, though this review focuses on the Sony SASW3 wireless subwoofer, it's impossible to consider it out of context of the total Sony ecosystem as it is designed to wirelessly work with that and as far as I can tell, only that. In the past Sony in fact bundled their systems together, but apparently folks were not convinced they wanted all of it. So I am comparing the Sony ecosystem ($999 HTA5000 soundbar, $349 SARS3S sides, and SASW3 subwoofer $399) to my current discontinued Sonos system, in particular the (sonos soundbar, originally $899, and two play 3's for sides, $598 total, and Sonos Sub gen 2 $749). Is it fair to compare a $399 subwoofer to a $749 one, or a $1747 system to a discontinued system that was originally $2246? Maybe not. But.
UPSIDE: But this subwoofer blows my original system out of the water. So there is that. In my modest sized family room, you FEEL the punch of this modestly priced subwoofer much more than I expected. If movies are your thing, especially action movies, you need this subwoofer. Not sure why you would hesitate unless you are integrating with an existing system. But even then, you really need to consider the SASW3. It was by far the most impressive part of the system to me. It delivered strong bass response and impressive explosions when called upon. It compliments the Sony soundbar amazingly well.
Let's discuss setup. Plug it in to a power outlet. Hit the power button. Done. Connects to the soundbar wirelessly. It then prompts you to update the software. And don't forget to do a sound optimization in the set up menu. I found that key for my room.
DOWNSIDE?: To be clear, this is a television sound system. The subwoofer rocks the roof, but it's not the smoothest for music only. That's where the Sonos beats it. And.. I don't know about you but I am over different physical remotes for things. Much prefer the app based Sonos system for control. BUT, and it's a big but.. if all you want is a television sound system, the only time you will need the physical remote is changing settings, which might only be on set up depending on how much you like to fine tune things or to turn it on to use with your portable devices. The Sony system has Chromecast, Alexa, and Apple Airplay 2 built in, but unlike the Sonos system, the Sony system always activates the TV to operate. Not a plus in my book. But your mileage may vary.
All in all, as a subwoofer for a television sound system for watching movies, 5 stars is not enough. If your priority is music, you need to balance your options.
