I’ve been using this headphones since 2 years and my experience has been nothing but great! Sound quality is great even with a Neutral EQ profile. I prefer having a custom EQ to juice out the best performance out of these. Great app with all the important features. Ambience mode works great, Speak-To-Chat feature works really well when at office / at the gym. Noise cancellation on these are on par with the high end headphones. I’ve tried them wearing these on a 30 hour long flight journey 3 times. They do not tire your ears, do not feel heavy, ANC blocks majority of the flight engine noise, flight infotainment adapter comes in handy in older planes, battery life lasted the entire 30 hours with ANC On always! It still had 15% charge left. I have even compared these against its successor XM5. Like majority of the reviews say, XM4 are a great for price headphones, XM5 aren’t much of an upgrade considering it’s $100 more than XM4. Wait for XM6 to upgrade! I also like XM4 foldable design better than XM5.

An overall good buy. The fit is comfortable and I love the design. At moments I felt that I was a bit bulky but I appreciated that it was lightweight. I really never used the case. Wonderful battery life, I went 4-5 days of regular use before even thinking about charging. Sound quality is stellar, noise cancelling was just ok. Overall a good purchase , especially compared with competitor products that often run more expensive despite comparable sound quality.

I’ve had these headphones for over 3 years and they’re still as awesome as the day I got them. The sound quality is unmatched, although I would recommend setting up some custom EQs in the Sony app (they’re a little muddy out of the box since most non-IEM headphones are tuned to be bass-heavy, but they have great clarity once you dial them in). My girlfriend got the XM5s around the same time as me and hasn’t been nearly as happy - the XM4s strike the perfect balance between quality, price, and durability, and in my opinion Sony downgraded all 3 of these aspects when they made the XM5s. I’ve worn them on walks, on planes, around the house, and anywhere else you might want to wear headphones and I haven’t had a single complaint. They’re comfortable to wear for hours, even with a hat and/or glasses on! Also as a man with a beard I tend to tear up the pleather on earpads (looking at you ATH-M50X), but these still look the same as the day I got them. Even though they came out 5 years ago, I still think these are absolutely worth the purchase.

I’ll break it down by look, feel, ease of setup and sound Look and feel are amazing! My ears are small so they fit in the cup perfectly I’d assume most normal sized ears would too but larger ears might feel the headset cup rims on their ears. It’s a nice soft cushion but I’m wondering how sturdy they will be because the material seems thin. Comfortable I purchased the blue and I think it’s classic and clean. Sound is nice. Bass is good, not too much. I can hear background noise so they are not perfect sound canceling and I have had better. Now the issue. I downloaded the app, I went through the setup process. UX on the app is clean but not intuitive. I’m sure there are things I need to get used to but I’m comparing these to the ease of setup I had from my last two headphones, which were also very impressive and less expensive. I’d reco them to people but I’d say they are blowing my mind.

If you are on the Autism spectrum, and/or have a sensory processing disorder, my review is for you. Sensory processing disorder is difficult for many to understand (Some people say the phrase "Sensory sensitivity" instead of processing disorder). These headphones were a Christmas gift from my parents who live in another state, so I took this attached photo as my facial expression the first time I turned on the ANC. I am on the autism spectrum and I have a sensory processing disorder. I work as a business data analyst for a fortune 25 company working with big datasets, building dashboards, ect. I really struggled in my job with the "Open floor plan" with cubicles everywhere. All the noise of the office was so overwhelming when I was trying to write complex formulas in Excel and Tableau, or complex SQL database queries. I would lose my place and have to start over. This was beyond frustrating. When we switched to work from home, I thought it would be great. All the noise of the office is gone! That was until a family moved into the apartment above mine with 3 kids who like jumping off the bed and playing basketball in the house (yikes). The problem for people with a sensory processing disorder is that we need periods of "silence" sometimes too, so even though my non ANC headphones (Sony MDR-7506s) were really nice, they required me to have music at a decent volume to try and block out the sound above me. Not with these new Sony WH-1000XM4s! I can activate the noise canceling without playing music, and it works! I had read a review that said it would auto-shut off after 10 minutes if you didn't play any music, but so far I haven't had that problem (as long as they are within bluetooth range of my phone still, as they will "sleep" if there is no bluetooth connection). These guys helped me SO MUCH. Not only can I not hear the noise upstairs, but I can also hear myself think and I can relax. The way these headphones compensate for your ear canal and atmospheric pressure is absolutely mind blowing. The silence is golden. As a final note to help those who don't have a sensory processing disorder, but might be considering these for a loved one, I have a quick story about my first time wearing them. With a sensory processing disorder, if a single sensation is "overwhelming" your brain, you are actually not capable of processing other sensations. Before getting these headphones, I had been told by multiple people that my dog had a weird smell, but I absolutely could not smell it. After just a few minutes of wearing these headphones (with no music playing, but with ANC on) I started smelling my dog. It was the most weird sensation to realize my SPD was preventing me from smelling my dog just because of the noise upstairs. ANC technology is live changing for someone with SPD, and these are the best in the industry for ANC. The music is great too (and yes I do use them for music sometimes as well) but if you are considering these for someone on the Autism Spectrum or with a sensory processing disorder, they are fantastic for that too, even with no music on. I own this model and the WH-1000XM2, and honestly, the M2 is more comfortable with better sound. The M2 is heavier with more plush material, but the M4 offers more options that I don't need with more complexity in the app. I love both of them (they BOTH have changed my listening world), but the M2 feels better made. I wish I could turn off the side touch options in both of them (maybe this is an option?) because I love laying down with them on and the touch option sometimes pauses playback. But this is still a quality option. Pros: Great at noise cancellation, sleek design, automatic pausing of playback when you take them off, side touch options available to change in the app (i.e., ffwd to next track, raise volume, pause, and speech search options). Cons: More "airy" design with lighter materials used than the M2, brief audio drops when connected to Bluetooth? (Why? It's the highest Bluetooth rating right now). Still pauses playback when lying down on the side ear cup.

No complaints in the slightest. The audio is crisp and clear, battery lasts a good while, and they're pretty durable. I'm usually worried I'll snap them with the size of my noggin but they don't get stressed too much at all.

Pretty good noise cancelling albeit voices and conversations can still get through on lower volumes. I'm not much of an audiophile but I've noticed that sometimes the sound quality can sound a little iffy but overall not unlistenable. Good battery life and the connection is stable.

I've consistantly using these headphones for running and regular use. I have close to 200 hours of use and the battery is still going strong. I like that you can set up ambient sound control to switch modes from noise cancelling to ambiet sound when you go from sitting to walking/running. These headphones have held up well to endurance running in the Texas himidity and heat but the abuse from the sun and heat the blue color has begun to peel off. Even with the color coating peeling off the touch controls still work.

I have these headphones for 3 years now and I can definitely say these are one of the best headphones out there. These over the ear headphone are very comfortable to wear! It’s great for folks who like workout! They wrapped around nicely around your neck so doesn’t feel bulky at all! There minimal buttons on the headphones so it’s all through a touch interface on the headset. You can even turn them off if you like on the Sony app! The noise cancellation feature is great and helps me focus on what I need to do and the battery life is excellent! I definitely would recommend the replacement plan if you use these often!

Beautiful. Great purchase. Sounds amazing and I hardly ever have to charge them. Used them on a 20 hour flight and it changed the game. I’ve never been so comfortable. The carrying case also makes transportation so easy. One gripe is I thought the cushions would be a little more plush/firm

Amazing active/noise cancelation and superior sound quality! One of my favorite pairs of headphones on the market, they’re light, come with a substantial case, include all cords, and last me days at a time before charging! They also have adjustable EQ and noise cancelation, something like the AirPods Max do not. One of my favorite gifts for family/friends!

I have iPods Pro 2s. I have the Sony XM4 buds, Samsung Pro buds, Pixel Buds Pro and even some nice Sennheiser open back studio headphones. The sound, comfort, ease of use and look of these headphones are by far my favorite of all. I also love that I can plug them in with a regular headphone jack to my work computer. The case is nice, the blue color I bought is beautiful. I waited so long to buy these because i had so many other headphones and really didnt need them. When they went on sale for $199 I couldn’t resist and im glad i didnt. They are amazing headphones and the noise cancellation is also top notch.

Unbeatable noise-cancellation quality and commendable audio quality make these the headphones to get when you need a quiet environment. Topping it all off is remarkable battery life (~30 hours). The main detriment is less than stellar connectivity options. It includes Sony's LDAC, but doesn't have any low-latency codecs.

I've been meaning to get a new pair for a while (I'm on the PC 24/7 streaming and working on art), and I've been looking at a pair of Sony's for years thanks to ANIME! My old pair was hurting my ears, good excuse, I don't regret my purchase. Love the style and color but I also love how almost versatile it is. The AUX port works very well when I need that direct connection but I've also been loving the wireless connection with my Phone (Pixel 7). There's also this automatic noise suppression and it's been a blessing so when I'm on a run I can still hear cars coming to get out of the way. The battery life is also SO GOOD, the range of the bluetooth is so far, I can go all the way to the basement while my phone is in my room (1st Floor, opposite side of the house). The price might be steep, but the quality is so worth it.

I've been wanting to purchase this item for a couple of years, and despite the time there are still excellent at deadening noise to isolate the user, with a highly competative price point. Despite the exsistance of it successor, the mx5, I opeted for these due to the pricing but more importatntly the compact size. These noise canceling headphone have exceeded my expectations, as not only do they provide excellent sound but can be used as a device to isolate low frequency noise to allow me concentrate on cognitive tasks. They do not completely counter all sound, as any active noise can still be heard but in a much more damped state. However, background noise, such as the tv in the other room or noise coming from a neighbour are vertuallyu neutralized. I am very please with this purchase, and at a price point of 250USD this was a great investment

I really like the comfortability and battery life of these headphones. The sound quality is very good. The noise cancelling is excellent outdoors and in the office. It's great to drown out the co-worker that has a conversation so loud its almost uncomfortable at 50 ft away. The app to connect and control works well on Android.
