While not known to be a leader in the mobile phone market, Sony's latest installment, the Xperia XZ2 Compact, is an impressive little device that stands tall next to its more popular counterparts. The XZ2 looks very small when compared to many leading phones, but it has a nice weight and solid feel to it in hand. The fingerprint sensor on the back is very responsive, but it did take some getting used to on the back of a smaller phone. The overall build is metal and plastic, and it has a nice glossy, silver finish. After several days of use, I really like the feel of this phone. Water and dust resistant, it seems like a must these days but I'm glad to see Sony get it right. Stereo sound is surprisingly full; there is no headphone jack, but the phone is packaged with a dongle if you prefer wires over Bluetooth. The battery life on the XZ2 Compact is very impressive, and its advertising of long life after short charges is pretty accurate. The display is vibrant and sharp, with slight fading when swiping quickly but nothing too jaunting. The camera is impressive, and it has 4K HDR video options to boot. Expandable storage and cloud options mean you can keep shooting without worrying about running out of space. I really can't get over how nice the phone feels in hand - if you want an alternative to the more well-known brands, this is a good choice. Overall, this is a pretty awesome little device that looks and feels like a winner from Sony. Full disclosure I was given this product for my honest, unbiased review.

Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact in White Silver Using the Sony Xperia Compact phone has been more of a challenge than I expected. This isn’t Sony’s fault I just have been using larger phones for quite a while now and the Sony goes in the complete opposite direction. On the hardware side Sony had done a excellent job here. You have the latest Snapdragon 845 which at the time of this review is one of the few phones currently available with this powerful processor. It has a beautiful high definition display with a very high screen pixel density. Sony does know how to make a great display and it shines on this phone. It comes with a 5.0 inch display that has clear bright colors, deep blacks that makes for a very high contrast ratio. This is a true HDR display and competes with the top phones in the market and gives nothing away. It won’t support Google’s VR headset but that’s not what this phone is for. Sony also put the base storage at 64GB with 4GBs of ram. The phone is very fast and again gives no ground here to its competition. Like most flagship phones today the camera is very good and the camera software is feature rich. The image stabilization works very well. There maybe better cameras but I think your skill taking the picture probably matters more than any hardware limitation. A very nice touch on this phone is the stereo speakers. At the right volume they sound very good. Speaking of sound Sony has followed other leading phones and left out the headphone jack. I have fairly good in ear headphones and I don’t like this trend but I have to say that using the included USB C adapter this phone sounds very good. I am still not convinced this is a smart move given Sony’s rich family of audio devices. You do get the latest version of Android 8.0 here and that includes Bluetooth 5.0 with full aptX and Sony’s own LDAC audio technology. Together this is as good as wireless Bluetooth can get today. I have yet to find Bluetooth headphones that support the 5.0 standard but getting aptX and LDAC support are built into this version of Android and other headphones so better wireless sound is available. What Sony has done here is put the most current technology is a small package. But it is this small package that I have trouble with. I am now confused since its been a while since I have had such a small phone and I certainly never had one with this level of technology. When I am out I forget it is even in my pocket. Yet when I am sitting down and surfacing the web I miss the larger screen. It does everything you could want a flagship phone to do. I could easy make this my daily driver since it does everything my larger phone does. There is one thing that is missing here that I might miss the most and that is wireless charging. The larger version of the Xperia XZ2 does have wireless charging and a few other minor features the compact doesn’t have, but all in all you are getting the same high end technology but in the compact form factor. If your looking for a flagship phone in a compact size this is a very nice option. If you are addicted to the larger screen I would recommend looking either at the larger Xperia XZ2 model or its competitors. But you can’t fault what Sony is offering here if you absolutely do not want a large phone.

I was so tired of having a brick for a phone that wouldn’t fit in any of my pockets (women’s clothing still has terrible pockets). This phone fits in all of my pockets. It’s lightweight and extremely comfortable to hold in your hand, which is exactly what I wanted. The camera is great, and it takes great videos, as well! The screen is amazing quality, scrolling is buttery smooth, and this phone is fast! The screen is water resistant and doesn’t get fingerprints all over it. Even though it’s plastic, the back is fairly hardy; I haven’t needed to buy a case for it. But the thing I love the most about this phone is the Battery Care charging. This slowly charges my phone and then charges it to 100% right before I wake up. This is so much healthier for the phone battery, which has always been the killer of my previous phones. But if you do need it to charge right away, it charges really fast. I’m also a heavy phone user and have to take a lot of pictures for my job, and the battery life on this is great. It lasts me all day, and 8 hours on a super busy day. Now, there are a couple of not-so-great things. The biggest thing is that when I first bought the phone, I did all of the updates and just completely lost signal through Verizon's network. I did some research and turns out this was an ongoing problem that can be fixed by factory resetting the phone. This was extremely annoying, but now I just don’t fully update it and it works fine. If you’re used to a bigger phone, typing on this can feel cramped. It took me a couple of months to get used to typing on it, so I wouldn’t recommend it if you have larger hands. Be aware that the size of this phone is not for everyone! It doesn’t have a headphone jack, but that’s not too big of a deal for me. The adapter it comes with is small and works great. The power button is on the right side of the phone, in the middle of the phone. Why it’s not at the top, I have no idea. I usually use the fingerprint sensor so it’s not that big of an issue, but it gets in the way when I put my phone in my car phone mount. However, I love that there’s a camera button. All in all, I love this phone. I did my research and it was exactly what I was looking for, and it didn’t break the bank!

Simple Review: If your a fan of small devices its one of the best choices you can get. Definitely has some drawbacks so keep an open mind. Long Review: Starting off unboxing this unit is what you come to expect. USB C charging cable with wall plug, the phone and sim ejector. The look and feel of this little device is not terrible but just ok. It's made to be a premium device but the back feels like cheap plastic which I'm not a fan of. Personally though my biggest gripe is software. So much bloatware and when j say bloatware I mean Applications you cannot uninstall or remove. There is even as in the software update screen. Its preloaded with trailers to Sony movies. It's a bit ridiculous especially since this is a unlocked phone and they tend to be the cleaner choice to carrier options. Performance wise was good in most categories except call quality. I'm using AT&T service here in the states and had complaints about static or talking underwater or in a tube. The last complaint is sound quality on the speakers. It feels like the equalizer needs to be played with badly so out of the box it's just too much. It is zippy so it feels incredibly fast and has a battery that even though its smaller can survive a full days usage from my tests. So to wrap up while this is a powerful little phone for people who don't like the giant phone trend. It's not something I would recommend unless size is all that matters to you. I hope this review helped a little bit in your purchase decision. Thanks for taking the time to read it.

Sony mobile phones don’t get much love in the states but are quite popular overseas. In the US it’s either iPhone or Samsung. The XZ2 Compact has a 5” screen with 64GB storage and 4GB RAM. Pretty “standard” config for a flagship Android phone these days. And the XZ2 is no slouch when it comes to performance. The 845 Snapdragon processor is very fast and flipping through apps is speedy without any lag. A beefy processor is needed considering it has a HD screen and, probably the phones biggest feature, the camera. 19MP camera captures really nice, crisp images and this is the only phone, currently, that can record video in 4K resolution. Obviously, it helps if you have a 4K TV/monitor to view them on but it’s still a nifty little feature. The super slow-mo runs at 960fps and is something you need to try out. It’s a little weird how it works, and it only works for a split second or so. Basically, you have to record a video and then press a button to capture the slow-mo. Personally, aside from a few apps, one of the main reasons I reach for my phone is for its camera. I previously used a Note 8 which took OK pictures however the video seemed a bit off at times. Sometimes it was super clear, other times it was kind of grainy looking. I haven’t really had the chance to test the camera/video in lowlight however, it works very well in well lit situations. Pretty much expected for any phone but this phone seems to produce nicer images and clearer video. The HDR also can be a little gimmicky at times. Sometimes it’ll be dull, other times it’ll be overexposed. Also, having previously used a Note 8, I really prefer larger phones. 5.5/6” screens are my preferred screen size so stepping down an inch or so took a little getting used to. But, on the bright side, it fits in my hand/pocket a lot easier now. Probably one of nicest features for me was the bloatware, or lack thereof. Having used a Samsung, there are a lot of apps/features/services enabled by Samsung on their phones. Some of them are nice/useful, the rest are completely useless, I think. The XZ2 Compact only has a few Sony branded apps so the clutter of useless OEM apps is very limited on this phone which is VERY nice in my opinion. A downside some people may have with this phone is that the casing is plastic. I think more people are used to metal casings on their phone strength/durability. However, the screen is Gorilla glass, so it’ll definitely be more impact resistant than some other phone screens. While the Sony brand of mobile phones don’t get nearly as much love as others here in the states, this is still a flagship handset. Great camera/video recording, good size and much cheaper than most other phones in its class.

Over the last year or two, we've seen a lot of great phones hit the market that don't require you to take out a second mortgage on your house. People have become cell phone crazy, and with a willingness to pay top dollar for the best, most exciting phone, other manufacturers are also taking the opportunity to release some mid-range phones with really great specs in the $300 - $700 range. One example is the Essential phone, released last year, that is a great phone that missed the mark in one major way, its camera. Still, for around $500, you could get your hands on a phone with a great design and snappy performance that definitely turns heads. This year, Sony is releasing its second-generation XZ phones (suitably called the XZ2's) which include a number of different choices, so many that perhaps Samsung is a little jealous. All joking aside, Sony's line of cell phones, tablets and laptops have always had a soft spot because of their design; if your Samsung Galaxy S9 is in a sport coat, the XZ2 might be in a tuxedo. Sony's design has always been what I would call "smart." All of the different players in the XZ2 line conform to some specific feature that makes that phone the best for the choice: The XZ2 has a big screen, the XZ2 Premium has a 4K display, and the XZ2 Compact is, well, smaller than all the others. Yes, in a world with increasingly large screens, Sony still has the gall to release a product with a 5-inch screen. This phone is more than just a 5-inch screen, though. The previously-mentioned "smart" design seen in many Sony products carriers through here, but does so in an incredibly compact body. Many smaller-screen phones still being released are put on the market with large bezels, but the XZ2 Compact's bezels are smaller than the competition; the side bezels are tiny, and the chin and forehead are small enough to make this phone look like it might have been released recently (compared to, for instance, the Pixel 2 or the iPhone 8). The screen itself has sharp corners, which is nice to see again, and the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 front sits very slightly above the metal edges of the phone. This is one of the first small-screen phones that I've seen in an 18:9 aspect ratio and the screen itself is full HD+ at a 2160x1080 resolution. The sides and back are all metal which gives this phone a great premium look and feel; the materials also add to its considerable (but extremely pleasant) heft. And speaking of heft, the alleged 'compact' phone is extremely thick, coming in at a half-inch, probably due to the ample 2,870 mAh battery. Some additional features to mention--a 19MP single-lens camera with a dedicated shutter button, a "snappy" Snapdragon 845 processor, expandable storage supporting up to 400GB micro SD cards, 4GB RAM and 64GB onboard memory, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C charging and stereo speakers. Pair that with the previously-mentioned beefy battery, and you have a pretty good package for $650. So what's wrong with it? Well, nothing, really. Sony's software overlay on Android 8.0 is minimal, almost non-existent, and the fingerprint sensor on the back is pretty fast. The 19MP camera isn't a gimmick and performs well enough for most users, and has a ton of manual setting options as well as super slow motion 960FPS video capture. And, the processor and memory combo help it handle tasks with ease. The battery, which drives the relatively small screen, does so impressively; I went almost two days between charging on days with light-to-moderate use. It's a small, zippy phone that's a joy to use. If there's anything in 2018 that is wrong with this phone, it's the screen size, which is kind of crazy. I'm used to big screen phones, so the first couple days with the XZ2 Compact were pretty rough--and I found myself having to shrink text just to get more to fit on a screen that 5 years ago was perfectly adequate for everyday use. And while I may go back to using my iPhone X soon, I do have to admit, there's just something special about this phone. Big phones are not for everyone, and that's the sweet spot where the XZ2 performs best. The camera is great, and I love the fact that it has a dedicated shutter button (although I'm less excited about the power button and shutter button both being screen-off shortcuts that turn on the screen and take you directly to the camera app). I love using a phone that again fits into my front pants pocket or my front shirt pocket without looking ridiculous. And I absolutely love the way the thing feels in the hand. But the other thing to consider is, small phones are also not for everyone. Sitting on a table in front of you, you're sure to get criticisms: "Where did you get that 10-year-old phone from?" one co-worker asked me. But once you spend some time with it--hold it, use it, and experience some of the major advantages in smaller phones that you may have forgotten about--the XZ2 compact is definitely worth considering. And for $650, it's not a bad package deal. I'm sure that carriers will discount it as it is not going to be in the top 5 selling smartphones over the next 6 months, and that would be the ideal time to pick one up if you can wait.

WOW is my overall impression of the Experia XZ2 Compact phone. Super smooth, super quick and awesome camera. I will not bore you with the phones specifications, but I will tell you that you will be very happy with a purchase like this. Let me start off by saying that the phones camera is stupendous. Pure amazement on the colors, and the sharpness. I have 3 other brands of phones, one of which is a high end phone. Side by side comparisons of the photographs taken with all 3 phones is a no brainer. Sony easily won hands down. Phone reception and call clarity is great. Application launches were super quick with no bog down. One really cool feature of this phone is called "Casting". You can project one of your saved photos directly onto your smart TV. How very cool is that? I'll bet that the first time your "cast" a photo onto your TV you will take your audience by surprise. In my case there was no set up for this feature to be used. NICE. One other thing that I would like to mention, is that I read some reviewers complained of a cheap feel specifically mentioning the back of the phone. I did not find this to be the case at all. My main concern is that a phone works well, has a great camera and is fast. This is certainly the case with the Sony phone. I love this phone. Buy one.

I really do like this phone, although I would definitely not say it is perfect. It is a lot rounder on the backside of the phone than I am used to. When I compare it to my iPhone 7 it feels much larger, but on the positive side it also feels a lot more sturdy. With my iPhone 7, I use a case normally because I feel that it will slip out of my hands easily. That is not the case with this phone. There also is not that much in the way of bloatware and it runs really fast. One of the best things about this phone is that it can convert video up to HDR, and when I watch YouTube I can really tell the difference. This is the first Xperia I have owned and so I wasn't used to the camera button on the side. I don't love it but it doesn't really bug me either. But when I allowed my 4 year old niece to watch a video on the phone she kept hitting the physical buttons accidentally. So it is not ideal for really small hands. However, I have noticed that the camera is not as good as the iPhone 7 or even the Pixel I used before my iPhone 7. The volume is really good without headphones. The headphones that come with the phone I really do NOT like but at least when they removed the headphone jack they gave you a pair of headphones and an adapter to try to make up for it. The fingerprint reader is in an odd spot but I got used to it within the first day of using it. However, I have small hands so that might explain part of it. The battery is really good, too, which is great. The battery and how fast the phone is would make it worth buying even without anything else to recommend about it. As I mentioned before the fingerprint reader is in a weird place but the bigger problem for me is that it cannot always read my fingerprint the first time. It is very annoying, especially since I often use my fingerprint reader to unlock apps. Most apps work great on the phone but sometimes YouTube does not work right. If I were to open the YouTube app 5 times in a day, YouTube wouldn't work correct at least twice that day. So overall I think it is worth buying but there are a few issues. It just depends on what you are looking and what issues you can deal with.

High End Features and Specs in a Compact Device

It seems that Android phones are just getting bigger and bigger these days, so I’m really happy that Sony came out with the Xperia XZ2 Compact. It’s a high-end flagship device with a lot of power and useful features, but they’re packed into a phone that can be used easily with one hand. Sony didn’t skimp on specs – the XZ2 has a powerful processor, a bright vivid screen, a memory card slot, and much better battery life than you might expect for such a small phone. The device has a rounded back that feels comfortable in my hand, and a fingerprint sensor near the middle of the back that I find easy to activate while holding the phone. At first, I was aiming high and kept putting my finger on the camera lens, but I adjusted in just a couple of days. Pictures I’ve taken so far have come out great in a variety of light settings. My last phone before this was a model with “plain” Android, not skinned or customized by the manufacturer, and I was a bit worried that Sony’s user experience might be very different. I’m very glad to report that the few modifications that Sony contributed to the user interface seem thoughtful, helpful, and unobtrusive. The one thing that caught me off guard at first was the weight. I found the XZ2 Compact it surprisingly heavy at first. Not uncomfortably heavy, for sure, but heavier than I expected it to be. Some may not like the lack of headphone jack. The phone comes with a little adapter to convert the USB-C port into a headphone jack, but you can’t use it and charge the device at the same time. If you’re a wired headphone person, maybe that’s going to be a deal-breaker for you. I’ve used Bluetooth headphones almost exclusively for a while now, so I don’t mind it at all. Overall, I’m very happy with the Xperia XZ2 Compact. It’s a fantastic option for most people who are looking for a high-end Android phone in a small form factor.
