I've been a loyal sony phone customer for past 10 years. From k750i, k850i android Xperia Neo, Z1S, Z3 and Z5 Compact. Since Z3 I was frustrated with the their phone. Display issue, no protection against minor splash of water (advertised as waterproof). T-mobile discontinued sony mobiles after Z3. So I decided to buy unlocked from BestBuy. I bought it last year August. Exactly since this year's August I was having network issues. Even if there were 3-4 network bar, I couldn't make call. Text and internet worked with interruptions. I thought it was something to do with t-mobile. Wish it was. It got worse past week. I hardly could make call. Changed sim to check my phone, put my sim to another phone. Did numerous factory reset, software troubleshoot through sony pc suit. NOTHING. I am done. Waste of money. Apart from that, the phone was fast and compact. But I need to be able to make/receive calls right.....

This Sony phone is only sold through 3 large outlets (Best Buy, Amazon and B&H) other than Ebay etc and not through any carrier. Also, while there are a bunch of superlative reviews (especially from Europe), there are also a number of negative reports (such as easy to crack, heating issues, camera problem, lack of fingerprint reader in the US version). So it was with trepidation that I bought it. I am extremely happy that I did. So far, I see no heating issues, and the phone is beautiful - it fits in my hand and pocket, very responsive, and the camera is fast and takes great pictures. US warranty is important to me, and I am glad that I went for this US version instead of the imported version with no US warranty (available through many third parties for slightly less and with a fingerprint reader too). I was able to update to Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) over the air on the day I received it. I also put a nice transparent case and screen protector on and added a micro sd card in it immediately (bought separately). Haven't tested its water/dust proof ability (and do not intend to test it actively!) or the hi-res audio yet. I am just a happy customer; this phone is much more satisfactory than the trusty iPhone 5s that I had for some years.

Not Perfect, But Still Very Nice Compact Phone

INTERFACE I was led to believe from many reviews that the interface is clunky and obtuse, but I find it pretty slick and easy to use and very snappy. However, the first thing I did was install the update to Android 6.0 and any other system updates that were queued up. The only glitch I've noticed is not always being able to drag icons into a folder on the Home screen, but since the problem is intermittent and now that the phone is setup there won't be much more of that going on, I don't see it as a deal-breaker problem. One online review noted an extraordinarily long time to bring up the camera app. I found it acceptable at a couple of seconds – no longer than the phone it replaced. PREINSTALLED APPS Yes, this phone – like almost all other phones – comes with preinstalled apps. Typically, you'll get preinstalled apps from the operating system (Google), the device manufacturer (Sony), and the carrier (such as AT&T). In this case, since the phone is unlocked, you don't get carrier apps, which means this phone probably has fewer preinstalled apps than your last phone. The apps it does come with are very easily uninstalled (press and hold the app in the App Drawer and hit the X to uninstall). For the apps that can't be removed, put them in a folder in your App Drawer and forget about them. Yes, most preinstalled apps are stupid and worthless, but it's not the huge deal some people are making of it. HEAT As some reviews have noted, the phone does get warm under heavy loads, such as when I downloaded the 1GB OS update and all the apps I wanted on the phone. It's not uncomfortable, but you notice it, on both the palm of your hand and your fingertips when touching the screen. However, under normal usage, it has been fine. BUTTONS As noted by other reviewers, the volume buttons on the side are awkwardly placed. They should be above the power button, not below it. The power button and camera shutter release buttons are both in good places, though. The phone thankfully has no physical Home/Back/Recent Apps buttons; they are responsive, easy on the fingers, and will not wear out like a physical button. I don't know why so many phone manufacturers are still putting physical home buttons on their phones. Sony has instead utilized the lack of physical buttons to maximize the screen real estate for this tiny (by today's standards) handset. FINGERPRINT SCANNER Contrary to what the specifications say on this page, the US model does not come with a fingerprint scanner. According to the Sony rep I spoke with, it comes with neither the software nor the hardware, so there's no chance it will be enabled at a later time. She said it was removed because it didn't work very well, but she didn't elaborate if the problem was in the hardware, the software, or both. Anyway, if you need a fingerprint scanner, this is not the phone for you (unless you want to order the warranty-free international version elsewhere). KEYBOARD The onscreen keyboard looks nice, but its functionality is subpar to the keyboard on my previous phone (HTC One mini). I had to search for a replacement keyboard, ultimately settling on the Google keyboard, which is good, but not quite as good as the HTC one. SUMMARY This has been a very nice phone so far, but I'm only giving it 4/5 stars due to the awkward button placement and default keyboard issues, as well as the missing fingerprint scanner.

I have thoroughly enjoyed this phone. I definitely don't EVER want a phone any larger than this. It is the perfect size for carrying in a belt clip and still works well for talking; texting, viewing and searching. I haven't had any of the issues that some reviewers have had except very slight warming but it seems quite normal to me. With any high end electronic device, if you make it work, it gets a little warm. I have not tried the 4K video so that may cause the overheating issue. My only complaints and reason for 4 stars, are the lack of finger print reader on the USA phone and the camera being like a phone camera. I was hoping to be able to leave the dedicated camera at home sometimes but that is not the case. For emergency pics you want to post or text, it is fine, but I expected a much better camera from Sony. I do LOVE the dedicated camera button, and the volume actuated zoom. Very handy. I also enjoy the REAL FM radio. Only wish they could have figured out a way to incorporate the antenna in the phone so I could listen through the speakers. Overall, a perfect size phone that works well.

It's a shame sony doesn't market well in the states but I've been using sony phones for awhile and they operate like no other. The z5 compact has all the bells and whistles as the flagship phones, only downside is the screen is 720 but honestly you can't really tell. Do yourself a favor if your looking for a phone that can handle everything you throw at it then this is for you!!

    Piece of junk!

Junk phone. Junk customer service. Junk warranty. The processing is slow, worse after installing 3-4 apps (gmail, facebook, youtube, google drive). Phone burned out in 16 days so it was non-returnable and I submitted it in to sony's warranty which went locally to the Woodridge, IL (Chicago area) repair facility. They received it on the morning of Mar 31, I called once a week every week and got a different story of what was going on every time they also told me that they switched repair facilities from Texas to Illinois which is the reason for the delay (Today is April 21, so almost a month). Ended up talking to a supervisor who consistently would talk over me and then when I decided to finish a sentence she accused me of being aggressive. They have no plan as of yet and have not yet looked at my phone, nor do they offer any kind of a compensation not even a loaner phone. The supervisor just kept going on about how they have a 12 month extended warranty where they are allowed up to an additional 3 months (caution: their program so its their "rules") to make a decision as to what they think the problem is.

    Overheated and burned-up while charging

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Hate to leave bad reviews, but have to be honest here. Like the Sony, overall, but the few times I charged it, it would heat up too hot to touch. The last time, it burned something inside and was dead after that. Also, Sony has gone to great lengths to ensure someone can't load a custom ROM. Even though it's sold as unlocked and you buy it outright. Was a battle to clean out the Sony bloatware (minimal, compared to others anyway) and do any kind of custom load. Love the form factor, but don't love that it takes a micro-sim (so you have to cut yours or pay T-Mo or whatever carrier for another sim). Overall, I don't think I'd keep this phone even it it hadn't burned itself up. Also don't like that you can't change the battery. Anyone in the Denver area want a lovely (new) case and screen protectors for it, LMK...

    So Far, So Good!

I always do a lot of research when it comes to phones. My previous phone before the Z5C was an Xperia Z that I purchased (refurbished) through T-Mobile. I loved the phone for so long, but it was time to upgrade. I purchased the Z5C because of its processing power and small footprint. I also really wanted to keep the water/dust resistance capability without buying a $50 case. This phone really does have it all in a small form factor. For those of you interested, I did unlock the bootloader as well as root the OS after all of the OTA updates from Sony. I'm currently running the rooted stock OS (6.0.1 Marshmallow) minus all of the bloatware (which really wasn't much). I've used the phone for roughly a week now and couldn't be happier. I really liked the fact that I could simply touch my old Xperia to the new one with NFC enabled during setup. All of my information transferred wireless without any hassle. This really is a great phone so far. I am on T-Mobile and the phone hasn't had any issues with regard to service. I do not have WifFi calling, but I don't really miss it.

Excellent phone, owned it for several months, never had any performance issues like the other reviewer mentioned. It's basically the only flagship device you can buy in a compact size. Performance has greatly improved with the Marshmallow update as well. If you're looking for a compact Android phone, this is your best bet.

Be warned, Sony cell phones Defective

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

Let me say, I own many Sony products including a PS4, Computer, TV, Digital Camera, and various accessories. I purchased another phone in this Sony Product line at the very end of last year, and while it lasted I thought the phone performed well. However, after owning the phone for only 3 months, my phone completed died and the phone was useless. I can say for certainty that this WASN'T caused by an accident (never dropped on the floor, or touched water). My phone was rendered useless, after talking to a customer service rep, he ensured me that if I sent my phone in ( it is under manufacture's warranty) that my phone will be repaired. After sending it in, and waiting 3 months they sent it back saying there is nothing they can do. I'm very disappointed with the way Sony has handled the situation, basically leaving customer's high and dry. Sony lost a customer with this experience, I can no longer trust the Sony Brand, this speaks very poorly about their products. Overall, I will never buy a Sony product again. They seem to have decreased the quality of their products. I would not recommend this or any other Sony cell phone to other consumers.
