My wife wanted this Laptop because of its looks. It has been so much more than that. It has had great performance and is so portable. HP support has been great. Lady stayed on the phone with me over 2 hours getting it set up and all the updates installed. Very please so far with this purchase.

Great convertible laptop. I've had it a year and just realized there's no rear camera. In today's technological age you would think it should be standard feature.

I was initially interested in this Ultrabook PC because it’s 2.45 lbs. So I knew I would most likely use it on the go instead of a tablet PC. Wasn’t disappointed.
USB Type C ports nice so I can do multiple things. Connect to a desktop display, high speed data transfer and charging. Found a legacy USB adapter in the box so I can keep using my supply of UBS 2.0 and 3.0 flash drives. I was also able to use a USB to SD card adapter on the supplied adapter. The charging cord was very long. Maybe 8’.
1080p display OK but it’s not as nice as 2K. Help keeps battery life to over 11 hrs. tho. Speakers are upward firing with good sound using YouTube.. Bluetooth worked fine on a Bose SoundLink Involve+ Bluetooth speaker. A corded headset worked with the 3.5mm headphone jack on YouTube.
Touchpad feels responsive which has been a sore point for me with lower price laptops. I first used the machine for approx. 45 minutes after giving it a full charge. Then closed lid and put it back on the charger. Noticed the PC was a little warm. Have heard this about one of the newer Chromebooks.
Looks a little strange because of the hinge but I’m sure I’ll get used to this. Wondering if the lid will become a fingerprint magnet like the demo model I played with @ a local Best Buy.
13.3” is the sweetspot for size IMHO.
Speedy SSD instead of HDD is the only way to go. Don’t need 1T because I live my life in the cloud.
I am aware Ubuntu is available at the Microsoft Store and might install it some day.
Backlit keyboard a good feature in dark or changing light conditions.
Gorilla Glass is suppose to be tough but I’m somewhat skeptical about this, as I have used it
before on smart phones.
Check UR local Best Buy to see if they have a display model or similar one.

Just got one yesterday.
The configuration is good enough for my daily use. Intel's 8th gen Core i7, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD. I planned to use it for 5 to 6 years. The body itself is slim, light, and beautiful. But there are 3 things I don't agree with HP. 1. The ventilation can be easily blocked if you put the laptop on your laps. You have to constantly adjust your gesture if you don't want it to get too hot. 2. The screen has a limited range to open, maybe enough in most of cases, but certainly not enough under some special situations. 3. It doesn't have a regular size USB port. The thunderbolt ports are very fast. But most of devices we are using today still have USB connection. It's a great pain without a regular size USB port. Of course it comes with an adapter. But do you call that a convenience or in convenience when you have to carry an adapter with your laptop every where?
I will consider a couple of days whether to return my purchase or not.
10 years ago my company bought a HP printer for me, it was a great, great pain because the paper feeding failed 75% to 80% when fax was used, and I couldn't return it. It looks like HP's product design and review has not improved since then.

almost instant on start time. sound is pretty good for how thin it is. Beautiful screen. nice back lit keyboard. usb-c is the future, and thats all it has, so buy a dongle for your legacy old school usb devices (haha) only complaint is the 256GB ssd is a bit small. just use office 365's 1tb storage and your good to go!

I really like this new HP Spectre touchscreen laptop. (typing my review on it now)
It is super thin, super light, and looks awesome. It feels as thin as my iPad in the case (probably exaggerating a little)
It comes with 3 USB-C jacks on the back and a 3mm headphone jack. The USB work as data and/or power. Two are Thunderbolt, the other is standard.
This laptop does not flip over flat like some of the 2 in ones, it only goes from closed to about 135deg. And does not have a fingerprint reader (I am aware of)
Setup was pretty easy out of the box, you will need to be able to connect to wifi to finish setup.
Everything I have tried works well on it (web browsing, facebook, xbox games, movies) One issue I have had is when you close it and open it back up it takes a little while to reconnect to the Wi-Fi.
Since I only just got it I really haven't had a chance to tax it with filling up the data and big downloads. I have watched a movie to test out video and sound. The speakers are so-so, picture is great (sound is great though headphones though which I'd recommend) It was easy enough to stream a movie from my Vudu.
The controls and touch screen are very responsive. I am not used to the touch-screen/laptop (I am still used to separate tablets and laptops) so I tend to use laptop and touchpad to navigate rather than the touch-screen. But it works great either way. Some of the icons and links are a little small to select using the touch-screen (these can be enlarged to make life easier w/ the settings I just haven't done it yet)
It runs w/ Windows 10. I am not a fan but such is life w/ windows and tablet style devices. I prefer older windows for laptops and ios or android for tablets. It also comes with MS Edge as a browser. I am a Chrome fan but am trying this out. I definitely prefer Edge to internet explorer. Still not sold over Chrome though.
I did notice running it for a while charging got the back very hot (being so thin I guess there is not much room for the cooling fan to work)
Overall I really like this laptop. It looks great and works great. I'd like faster Wi-Fi connection on wakeup, and a fold flat ability. Other than that it's great.

My new favorite laptop!

Let me just start by saying I love this laptop! It's so incredibly thin and the screen is the perfect size. I can get schoolwork done without squinting. The boot time is fantastic. This is my first SSD (solid state drive) laptop I've ever owned. I press the power button and within like 2 seconds I'm logging in! I'm STILL shocked how fast this thing is! I love doing everyday tasks on this laptop. It's the perfect combination of hardware and software and this ceramic white gives it an even higher-quality appearance. Did I mention this laptop has facial recognition?!? Well, it does. And I thought it was a really neat feature (not that I need to use it but still). I wish the vent was on the back somehow...the vent is on the bottom so it's not a good idea to use the computer while it's resting on your lap. That's the biggest drawback for me but it's not worth knocking off a star for. The keys on the keyboard are spaced perfectly to the point I'm not unintentionally pressing keys. I haven't played any games on it YET (I own an Asus ROG G752VM for that) so I can't yet speak for the graphics card performance. Oh and I practically don't use the touchscreen, lol. The picture/screen resolution is so beautiful that I rarely touch the screen but it's a super neat feature to have. Oh and the battery has to be the longest lasting battery in any laptop I've ever owned (aside from my gaming laptop). I love it! All in all, for what I use this laptop for, I'm thoroughly satisfied and definitely recommend it. It's perfect for travel because of it's size and weight and fast enough to help you check something important last second (not minute, haha). If you get one of these, I seriously hope you enjoy it as much as I do. (I have to hide this from my family because they'd rather use this than their own computer, haha)

I have some mixed feelings about this unit

HP Spectre 13-af012dx:
I have some mixed feelings about this unit. HP has been my mainstay in business machines for most of the last 30 years. However, there are moments of mishaps, and this may be one of them.
The PROs:
• The touchscreen is a cool feature.
• A strong hinge to keep it from flying open, so be sure you are comfortable opening and closing this item. My husband complained of difficulty.
• Portable
• Light in weight
• 13” is very pleasant on the eye – especially when dealing with graphics and texts all day.
The CONs:
• Battery gets hot.
• I did experience battery failure when the meter said 60%. I was able to get back on, but I worry about the being able to retrieve my information, so I also back everything in the cloud just in case.
• The speakers did experience an intermittent clicking sound.
• No HDMI port and only 1 USB port which feel is a serious design flaw. I have to attach a multi-hub to hook up other items. I can’t use my mouse and my presentation projector at the same time.
SUMMARY:
Prior to this experience, I have had nothing but a 5 Star experience with HP products. However, after evaluating this laptop, I would like to know what changed at HP to let this happen? I am going to hold a positive attitude that these issues were a fluke and won’t occur again. My fingers are crossed? I’m not saying I don’t recommend it because I also base my recommendations on how HP handles issues if I bring it to my attention. If I get a 100% bum item and I am given 101% satisfaction, I would recommend a company for that reason, including their products.

Thin. Light. Fast. Just As Advertised And More

This laptop is everything it’s advertised to be. If you’re reading these reviews, you likely already read that it’s thin, light, and fast, and the reasons why. I’m not going to repeat these. I’m going to discuss the other features I found that stand out.
There are three rubber strips on the bottom of the laptop to keep it in place on most surfaces. It’s held strong on my lap and glass desktop (most common places used). I have no doubt it’ll hold in place on most surfaces.
The keys are smooth to touch and easy to type on. My only issue with the keyboard layout is the directional keys. They’re in line with the rest of the keys with no separation and the up/down keys are the same size as each one of the left/right directional keys. I’ve hit the wrong keys many times expecting to go up or down. Maybe I just need more use to get comfortable with it but I use three different keyboards a day (including this one) and this is the most challenging.
There are only four connections in/out of this laptop. 1 headphone jack and 3 USB-C (one used for power). It would’ve been real nice to have a standard USB connection, but it does come with USB-C to USB adaptor. In order to connect this to my TV, I had to purchase a separate adaptor for HDMI… a $50 purchase… not impressive for a new laptop.
This thing looks amazing. I love the colors, hinge setup, beveled edge, and speaker layout. Very high-end looking. It even comes with a leather carrying case. Not the best for protection, but a nice touch nonetheless.
The battery life could be longer, but it’s what I’d expect from something aimed at reducing weight. Also to note is it charges fast. The battery goes from 10% to almost at 100% in 30 minutes.
I give this laptop 5 stars because it is everything advertised (see title) and because it’s a pleasure to work on. I would recommend this every day of the week and twice on days that end in ‘y’.

pros: Very good looking. Thinnest laptop I ever seen and the design looks elegant.
cons: ENTER key feel loose at very first day. It is still functional though. Battery life is short. Very easy to leave scratches on lid. After a week, it has a strong noise when playing sounds either on headphone or speaker. After 2 weeks, bluetooth is gone. Make a replacement on bestbuy and the new one has a loud click when fan spinning.
I would not recommend it unless you only want a beautiful laptop.

Upon getting to the box, the first thing I noticed was that 'Spectre' appeared to be embossed in the script from the James Bond movie, which I found fantastic.
I was pleasantly surprised upon removing the laptop from the box at the weight. It is an extremely light piece of machinery, and that makes for a very easy carry.
The battery life is fantastic, as I often take it to various sites to use as a recording platform for video/audio, and it holds up well.
The touch screen functions well enough, though at times it doesn't seem to be very intuitive, and the screen smudges much more quickly than that of my cell phone.
I'm not much a fan of the mouse pad, as its two-handed functionality seems to change every time I turn it on.
Facial recognition also works well; I had to remove a hat before it would log me in, so the security seems tight on that.
Overall, it's quite a fine machine.

HP was shipped directly to me. When it arrived, I was impressed with the change in the packaging. Minimalist and clean. Unboxing was easy, the box contained only the laptop, power cord (two ac adapter tips) and USB-C/USB adapter. The laptop was sleek, matte off white. This actually might prove to be a problem. Even handling it with care resulted in scrape marks on the white surface (the plastic button on my shirt cuff, the ring on my hand, the pad of paper on the table, etc.). Although they wiped off with a damp cloth, it is a concern—I’ll need to add a protector. I fully charged the laptop before I turned it on (it was partially charged on arrival). I liked that there are three rubberized strips (edge to edge) on the bottom instead of feet to raise it off of a flat surface. It also keeps it from sliding around on a smooth surface. When I turned it on, it powered up to ready very quickly.
It took a while to install my three main packages (Snag-it, Office365, and Adobe CC—InDesign, Acrobat, Photoshop,Illustrator), along with DropBox. Things got a little sluggish after that. I use the Chrome browser. The refresh rate from screen to screen was slower than I would have expected with this i7 processor (even at 1.8 ghz, 8g RAM I though it more capable). On some screens I found it took longer than normal to render the screen image. I ran a test with my other laptop 2.6 ghz/a6g RAM) - both had more than 100g free space. The performance was rather slow.
What is excellent is the display. The true black background produces vibrant colors with crisp clear text and bright colors for both text and images (photos and video). The three USB-C ports provide speedy connections even though you will need to use the included adapter for old style USB connections, video or anything else you want to tether to the computer.
Overall, I like the computer and recognize that although it does not have serious processing power for regular production, it will work as a light weight option for travel.

HP hit a home run with this Spectre Ultra Thin
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
This review is for the HP 13-af012fx Ultra Thin 13 inch laptop with an Intel 1.8 ghz series 8 i7 CPU which has short duration turbo capability up to 4 ghz. It has a 256 GB M.2 PCI-e hard drive and 8 GB of DDR3 RAM with a full HD IPS Touch display with a Gorilla glass protector. It has two ThunderBolt ports and one USB 3.1 port. It also has Intel's HD 620 video and a I/8th audio port and a Windows Hello capable video camera. It has a really nice backlit keyboard.
The new HP Ultra Thin is really ultra thin. It is a gorgeous creamy white with gold accents. The hinge is smooth, easy to open and close and the screen stays put at any angle. HP did it well in regards to the Hinges. The display is clear and sharp. When I compare it to my 4K 27 inch monitor and even my 4K Alienware 17 inch laptop it has plenty of resolution for its 13 inch screen.
The backlit keyboard is very easy to read in the dark. I wish it was touch activated, but it is either on or off with an easy touch of a function key. The keys have a reasonable amount of travel for such a thin laptop and I found it comfortable and responsive to type on.
I didn't test the Thunderbolt ports. It starts amazingly fast and is very responsive and video playback is smooth. Photographs are gorgeous on the Full HD display and the IPS screen looses virtually no color fidelity at reasonable off angle viewing , and very little at extreme angles. Although I rated it 5 stars based on how it is configured it is not perfect for everyone. If you are expecting to play high end games it only tested 13 frames/sec at full HD using Fur Mark as a test bench and didn't improve when testing at 720P resolution. The memory is on the motherboard so if you plan on high end graphic editing you better buy the model with 16 GB of RAM and get the larger PCI-e M.2 hard drive as Photoshop or high end video editing will still need a lot of scratch space as they will still be limited by even 16 gigs of RAM. The good news is that The M.2 SSD drives are very fast and provide fast scratch performance. The Intel HD 620 Graphics will be sufficient for graphics work, but will not be suitable for high end video work.
The battery is not going to give you any more than 4 to 5 hours with constant use. For testing I set it to never go to sleep and when I am not using it, it goes to screen saver running 3840 x 2160 resolution photos. This is a constant use scenario and the most I have gotten is 4.5 hours on a full charge, which is pretty good for such a small battery, a fast processor and an HD screen running at 80% brightness. To get the 11 hours that HP is claiming it will have to be sleeping an awful lot.
The B & O audio is really quite good for such a small thin laptop and the quality is exceptionally good playing through Bluetooth connected speakers or headphones.
My only knocks on this Spectre Ultra Thin is that HP's design of the smooth hinges limits the angle that it can be reclined. So if you need it to lay back almost flat it will not do it. It will only recline to about 45 degrees.
It also has no HDMI port, so those of you who don't have TVs that you can cast to via Bluetooth or those that like to hook your laptops to the HDMI ports of the TVs in your hotel rooms may not be pleased that you will have to have a Thunderbolt to HDMI adaper cable.
This configuration should suit most people who have midrange needs and want to use online or USB storage media to supplement the rather sparse by todays standards 256 GB SSD. The touch screen should please those who spend their time poking at their phones. The Ultra Thin is light and runs quiet and cool, so this small laptop should be easy and comfortable for everyone. Cruising the social media sites should be way nicer on this easy to carry laptop than a phone, when you are at home or traveling.
It is pricey, so if you aren't into quality, look for something cheaper. If you want a gorgeous looking, thin, light laptop with a fast processor and a scratch resistant beautiful Full HD display, I think HP hit a home run with this new Ultra Thin 13 inch Spectre laptop.
