I opened this up and jumped into it blindly. After some updates (Takes a while) This is a cool little toy for a 10+ yr old. I played around with it myself (I'm older than 10....a little) The system does have a few bugs that need fixing. It has syncing issues. You also need to download and app on your android or IOS devise. And the interaction aspect [ voice controls] are hit and miss. Some of the adventures require picking up Spidey and physically playing with him. I have to say, this costs way to much to risk the damage incurred by dropping or rough housing. It is a cool companion when it does work. My favorite feature is the alarm. Spidey is creative with his style of waking you. The variety is nice. make sure that your WiFi connection is up to par as you will need that to fully enjoy this toy. He learns from your interaction, So get involved. Finally , while there are a few neat features in this can of spiders, I just believe it is too much money for something so fragile aimed at kids. I don't recommend this to families on a budget. If you've got the cash to burn, give it a go. Side note: Some of the jokes are pretty Lame/Funny. But in all, it is a forgettable product. Only for the BIG Spidey fans.

Interactive toy with an Alarm clock!

this review is for Sphero Spider-Man toy This Sphero toy is very nice looking especially with the spiderman logo illuminating on it and the interactive LCD like eyes doing eye movements while the toy is talking to you or telling you a story or a joke. Here is a list of the cons and pros: Pros: - there is a good amount of content built in the app and the toy, it will take your kid months to get to know and play all of them. - the toy looks really good, and it stands out. - there are a few modes in which you can use the toy with, like teaming up to practice skills (requires movement with the toy), or asking for a joke or chatting or even asking the toy to tell you a story, or even fight villains. - a really impressive feature is the guard mode, when activated it would alert you if a movement happened around it. - I like the alarm clock, as simple as it is, its still a useful feature. Cons: - the speaker is positioned under the spiderman logo and its only protected by the rubber which makes the spiderman suit, it is very fragile, and if a kid held the toy the wrong way or squeezed it due to excitement while holding it the speaker might actually break. - this toy requires a somewhat a tech savvy user (parent or an adult to install the app, connect the toy to wifi, install the updates the first time). It also requires a seperate devise like a smart phone or a tablet to access the full features of the toy, which I find disappointing. - there is serious security issues as this toy can respond to your words (IE its listening to everything is said around it).

This device is pretty fun my entire famile liked it. Don’t expect this toy to be acting like any other voice-assistant device out there but it does simple task like; tell me a joke, has a story mode, but the most feature that I liked is the alarm that you can set to remisn you and the Guard mode that alerts you when someone walks in front of it and keeps track of the time and gives a short berief after you saying stand down by pressing the spider button. High quality and rubber finish makes it soft in touch. Happy with it.

This Sphero Spider-Man product is amazing and my 10-year-old son loves his spidey (that is what he calls him). The device is kinda of the concept of Alexa but it doesn't activate by voice command, you have to press the spider on Spidey's chest. Pressing the spider button activates the device. He tells many jokes and asks questions to know you. For playing, he features a story where he walks your through a spiderman crime scene and he requests the player's assistance. He can guard your room when someone enters and keeps track of the time and gives out an alert. The sound is incredible and the Light eyes change with Spidey's emotions and conversation. The first day he kept my son entertained for hours. Easy to set up with a smartphone app and you may set up an alarm to wake up your little ones in the morning. I love the features that come with its own charger and rechargeable batteries; no more using disposable batteries. I hope Sphero company can create a device for girls. To summarize, my son loves his new toy/friend.

This sphero spiderman looks great with its oversized head and expressive LCD screen eyes. The eyes are the best features of the toy and they can move, squint and also wink based on the conversation you are having. It also flashes in different colors when using spidersense. The toy with the stubby legs does not move and the arms are posable only. The rubbery texture is silicone like a rubbery basketball and feels pretty durable. The toy turns on and off by pressing the glowing spider logo on the chest and is the only physical button. It comes with a webbed charging base and a microusb cable. It works a couple of hours on a single charge when away from the base. The toy is controlled by an app and is required to setup. Once setup you do not need the app an can just use the button. The app however provides a plethora of activities to have fun with including cracking a joke and going on adventures. It can also be used as an alarm and in guard mode where it can register movement and asking intruders to go away providing a movement report at the end of the day. A very nice and fun toy from sphero.

It wasn’t too long ago that I saw my first Sphero robot. It was fun to play with although a little tough to get used to movement-wise. That experience was with the first generation Sphero and since that time, the company has branched out into licensed devices like the droids from Star Wars. When I had the opportunity to try out Spider-man by Sphero I thought, “How cool! My very own superhero!” Unfortunately, the experience was less exciting than my anticipation. The packaging is quite impressive and I have to say that it is adorned in the red/blue branding of Spider-man. It’s very classy looking and has a lot of great graphics on the outside of it. Spider-man himself is one solid piece. Other than plugging in his charging base with the Micro USB cable that is provided (no power adapter included), there is no other assembly required. Getting started with Spider-man is very easy, too. Once you have him plugged into power and charging, you download the app from the App Store (iTunes or Android) and power him on. The first thing you will go through is a short warm-up to get you familiar with interacting with the hero. This is where the experience sort of fell flat with me. Spider-man does not move. Other than his eyes, which are small LED panels, there is no animation whatsoever. The app is very well-developed and gives users several ways to interact with the statue, but I personally would have liked to see some additional moving parts. I didn’t expect him to swing around the room with a web, but I did think that maybe his head would turn and his arms would be controllable. Spider-man does sense when you move him around, for example, if you pick him up and swing him around the room, but other than that, he’s basically just a free-standing statue. All that said, Spider-man does look really cool. I was amazed with the detailing on the device and the soft silicone feel of the device. His voice rings through loud and clear and he did understand me pretty well when I talked back to him. The main part of this experience happens in the app. Spider-man can stand guard in a room (he will just report to you that there was motion/activity), act as an alarm, tell you jokes, and even watch TV with you (Spider-man animated series only). For an adult, it’s a little cheesy especially for the price you pay for it, but for, but for a kid, I could see this being a good experience for learning how to interact with an artificial intelligence-driven device. Spider-man by Sphero is a unique version of ‘create your own adventure’ for the next generation. He looks cool and does work as he should. I just expected a bit more on interactivity from the device itself.

    Echo for Kids!

My son loves asking Alexa to “tell him a joke”, even though he doesn’t quite understand the humor (he is seven). So I immediately thought of him when I discovered this toy. It doesn’t hurt that he also happens to adore Spider-Man! The Sphero Spider-Man provides more than just jokes, he can tell interactive stories, play games, and even ‘watch’ Spider-Man with you. The device itself is a voice controlled computer that has various activities that can be operated without a constant internet connection. Though you need a smart phone to configure him initially, he can operate standalone after first set up. Though having a phone or tablet to interface with him does provide visual interaction and content updates, I found it wasn’t needed. Everything can be accomplished via voice commands, a huge plus considering the primary audience. Spider-Man has a soft rubber texture, movable arms, and animated eyes that are surprisingly expressive. I am impressed how Sphero was able to achieve the feel of Spider-Man using only voice and eye animations. In addition, Spider-Man has an infrared sensor and gyro meaning he can respond to both movement and motion, adding to the feel of him being ‘aware’. Speaking of aware, I applaud Sphero for not eavesdropping on our children, all voice recognition is processed on the device and not sent to the ‘cloud’. My only negatives about Sphero Spider-Man are the short two hour battery life and the occasional delay in voice response. An occasional delay is acceptable versus requiring external processing to speed things and the battery life is mitigated by the included charging stand. Overall, Sphero did a fantastic job bringing the Spider-Man character to life without sacrificing privacy in the process. If you have any young (or old!) Spider-Man fans they are sure to love Sphero Spider-Man.

Purchased this for my son (5yrs old) who loves Spiderman. This device does not listen on command like Amazon Echo or Google Home. So you cannot just say, "Spiderman" and expect him to turn on. However, after pressing tbe button he can tell jokes, ask questions about you to "get to know you" and so forth. Whats cool is he has a story mode feature where he will take you through a crime fighting scene and ask for your help. Do what he says and succeed, fail to do what is asked in time and fail. Also has a guard mode that will alert when someone enters the room and keep track of the time they entered and alert the owner. Pretty cool device, easy to use and set up. Only reason I did not get five stars is because sometimes the device is not good at hearing commands.

3 stars for spidey but that's about it. I was able to buy this toy at a great price but it is definitely only worth about 50 dollars to be honest. App is easy to use and Spider-Man has a lot of charm but the speaker hardly picks up your voice and he only understands specific phrases. He doesn't even understand "how are you today?" This toy is far from the technology that Google home and Amazons Alexa provide and those are exactly the same price if not cheaper than this toy. If Spider-Man could search the web (haha "web" get it?) or play your music playlist this toy would be much more worth the price.

Great toy for Techie Kids...or Nerdy Adults

I originally saw the Sphero Spiderman at Comic Con San Diego and was impressed with the limited functionality they had on display. I immediately thought about buying one for my kids, but couldn't justify the price tag. When this went on sale in February for $35 it was a no brainer. This toy has a companion app that lets you select super nick names to call your child when he interacts with them. Spidey can tell a series of jokes and stories randomly, or you can pick ones from the app once they've been unlocked. My only complaints so far are 1: There aren't any super hero names to reference more than one child, which would be great. 2: There's a feature that has a child fight crime with Spidey that I can't seem to figure out. My son and daughter both try to air punch and kick as the Sphero tell them to, but he never seems to recognize that it's happening. Long and short of it...if your kid's into super heros, and you can find this for under $90 grab it immediately. At $100 or more it's still good for an older child (maybe 8 - 12), but it may be too much to spend on a smaller kid unless you're willing to do a lot of app work with them.

Spidey works great most of the time, my kid absolutely loves him but you the only problem is you have to say exact phrases and while the app gives you some You have to do trial and error a lot too so it is great and he does work a little pricey as well but overall for a Spider-Man loving kid a great addition!

Bought for my 11yr old for Christmas who loves anything & everything Spider-man. His face lite up upon opening box & he plays with it daily. I like that after a month he still plays with it daily & it’s not forgotten about with all other toys of christmas’ past. It really is interactive; the more they play the more becomes unlocked. And he sure loves the “alarm” Spider-man has to let him know if his sister tries to come in his room!

The setup of the Sphero - Spider-Man could not be easier. A few minutes in, with clear prompts from the toy, and we were off to adventures. The only oddity was that we had to restart it after setup for the eyes to come alive, but after that... man, do they come alive! For a pretty static toy, they really change the experience and give Spidey amazing expressiveness. I did not have a hard time getting it to understand me. All and all, great fun!

I purchased this interactive toy when it was on sale as a featured "Deal of the Day" item. For the money I paid, the toy is well worth the cost! It has a lot of fun features that are certain to entertain children. However, after using the product and understanding what it fully has to offer, I'm glad I did not pay full price, nor do I suggest anyone else pays the asking price. Don't get me wrong, the product is awesome, but it isn't worth what the company currently has it priced as. I would reccomend this item, but also recomend finding the item at a bargain price before purchasing.
